PowerMac G4 Hanging on Shutdown, now won't accept 10.2.4 patch

I have a dual 1.ghz G4 silver door PowerMac. I've been running OS X 10.2.8. Suddenly, my system quit shutting down properly. It would start the shutdown, then hang up at the stage where the screen had the blue desktop background and the clock looking icon was "spinning". The only way to get the system to go past this point was to press and hold the start button.
I tried the disk utitlity and Disk Warrior, but none of those fixes changed the shutdown behavior. So, I reinstalled the OS X 10.2 operating system, using the "archive and replace" option. Then I began patching the 10.2.0 OS to bring it back to 10.2.8. The "combo" 10.2.8 patch wouldn't run. It would start prepping, then abort with the cryptic message that there was an error, please try again.
After a couple of tries, I gave up and started applying the patches one at a time. I got as far as trying to apply the 10.2.4 patch. For that patch, the installer tells me it cannot apply the patch to my system because it doesn't meet the requirements for this patch.
I can't tell whether the shutdown problem I had earlier is related to the inability to upgrade my OS to the most recent patch, but I am wondering whether there might be some hardware issue at the bottom of this series of events.
Any help, hints or clues would be appreciated.
Nikki
PowerMac G4 Dual 1 GHz   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Hi, biosmell -
I am considering pulling the internal battery in hopes it will kill the boot memory and perhaps default back to the OSX disks again.
That should work to reset PRAM, which contains the boot volume selection. Be sure to also pull the power cord, and to wait long enough; about a half hour should be fine.
After replacing the battery and reconnecting the power cord, wait another couple of minutes and then boot it - by default it should boot to the first OS it finds on a local (i.e., internal) hard drive.

My email account has disappeared from my iphone4. No longer listed. Tried to set up new email account but now won't accept my user name and or password.

Finally went to the Apple shop where a nice young man explained that I had to use the original password not the recently changed password - case sensitive too - and finally have installed the updated Adobe Flash player with no shaking! Maybe this helps you too. JL

If You Are Locked Out Or Have Forgotten Your Passcode
iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
    iOS- Understanding passcodes
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
         1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
         2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
              and Home buttons.
         3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
             start with step 2 again.
         4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
         5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
         6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • G4 mini Random Shutdown; Now Won't Power On, Power Supply Problem?

Twice now, my G4 mini has simply turned off randomly. The first time, it eventually restarted, and all was good until today, when it did it again. This time, it simply won't power on, much less boot. I wanted to run this by someone else (no Mac people here but me) before I bought a second power supply.
    What I've noticed:
*If I plug a cold power supply into the wall, and then into the mini, the mini lights up for maybe half a second, then turns off again.
*Then, leaving mini plugged in to the PS, if I uplug the PS from the wall, wait ~3-5 minutes, plug it back in, the mini will light up for 1/2 second again.
*If I then unplug the PS from the mini (but leaving the PS plugged into the PS), wait ~3-5 min again, then plug the PS back into the mini, nothing happens. No lights, fireworks, nada.
I have repeated every possible combination of plugged/unplugged mini/PS in several outlets throughout my building. It seems that if I have a "hot" PS the mini will not light up no matter what. If the PS is "cold", and has sat for a few minutes, the machine will try to boot.
All I can think is that something in the mini is tripping a safety on the PS, or the PS is just tripping on its own.
    Bad PS?

It's possible the previous power supply failed in a way that caused damage to the system, or of course for another fault to have developed with these symptoms.
It's interesting that it worked, apparently properly, because that tends to suggest the fault is something new, or that you have power issues of another kind external to the Mac.
I would suggest you try and reset the PMU since this controls the power management functions of the system.
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
This may not help much, but it's well worth trying.

  • LabVIEW 2012 used to hang at shutdown, now hangs at launch ("Initializing menus")

    Hello,
I'm running Windows 8 64-bit, and have LabVIEW 2012 32-bit (12.0f3). I started using it a few days ago, and was never able to shut down LabVIEW properly. I could close my projects, but when I then tried to exit LabVIEW from the home screen, the GUI simply stop responding, and I'd have to forcibly kill it. Then, I installed the latest VIPM, and noticed that I can't shut that down properly either (I believe VIPM is implemented in LabVIEW?). None of my non-LabVIEW-based programs have this issue.
Then, I tried to install OpenG from within VIPM, which launched LabVIEW itself. However, that hung at "Initializing menus".
I'm not sure if VIPM had anything to do with it, but now, I'm unable to start LabVIEW altogether. Even after restarting my machine (using the Restart option, not Windows 8's Hybrid Boot), LabVIEW would hang at "Initializing menus". Task Manager shows 0% CPU activity, and LabVIEW had only taken ~20MB of memory.
What could be the cause, and how can I fix it?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Ok, I:
Uninstalled ALL National Instruments, JKI, and IVI software.
    Rebooted
Manually deleted residual NI, JKI, and IVI files/folders
Cleaned the Windows registry of NI, JKI, and IVI entries
    Rebooted
Checked Task Manager to ensure that no NI service eluded deletion
Installed LabVIEW 2012 from the NI Developer Suite DVD (LabVIEW only -- no other components)
    Rebooted
    Launched LabVIEW
LabVIEW launches now, but I'm still unable to shut it down properly... One day it will probably refuse to launch too.
    Some help please?

  • My MacBook Pro shutdown after it said my USB was draining to much power and now won't turn on please help

Hi my MacBook will not turn on after it said my USB was draining to much power, and it shut down and now won't turn back on please help

USB power management is part of the SMC (system management controller).  Try to reset SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Then get a self-powered USB external hub.  It takes power from a wall socket and saves the MBP power system.  Starting at $20 at BestBuy and similar stores.

  • IPod 5th Gen. froze, shutdown, and won't charge how do I fix it?

Please help me figure out what to do to fix my iPod 5th Generation. I put it on the charger, and when I came to check on it, it froze, then shutdown, now it won't charge or nothing. I tried rebooting it an nothing happened, please help me!

All you need to do to solve this problem is to hold down the lock and home buttons at the same time and count slowly to 15. That's called a hard reset and it should reboot the phone out of the black screen funk. Give it a try - it should work. If it doesn't, bring it to the Apple Store. Good luck!

  • Random crashes of different programs and it hangs at shutdown

For the last 2 weeks I have had problems with random crashes of different programs and that it hangs at shutdown. Not everyday, for 2-3 days everything is working fine, then comes "that kind of day" when everything crash (segmentation fault). It could be Firefox, Chromium, Spotify and other programs, dropbox and nm-applet has disappeared from systray in panel. Usually it happen when I see flash video, but it has happened without that. Once Firefox had crashed when I was away from the computer. "Those days" always end with that it hangs at shutdown.
I don't know how to find out what is the cause of this, or if there is a relationship with those diffrent programs that crash and that it can't shutdown properly.

The next day it was a long list of items like this
    Feb 27 08:14:31 localhost kernel: [ 7.693636] EXT4-fs (sda7): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode 1069038
I'm getting worried, because this has happened so many times now. Is there a risk it can damage the hardware?
I just installed the lts-kernel but I don't know yet if that help, or if it has anything to do with the kernel.
I found very strange in errors.log, one day it was lots of lines like
    Feb 29 21:37:44 localhost udevd[198]: wrong type 0
More than 13 millions of lines like that! That log file is 678 MB.

    Here is from kernel.log

I'm getting worried, because this has happened so many times now. Is there a risk it can damage the hardware?
I just installed the lts-kernel but I don't know yet if that help, or if it has anything to do with the kernel.
I found very strange in errors.log, one day it was lots of lines like

More than 13 millions of lines like that! That log file is 678 MB.

  • Many itunes install/uninstalls...hangs on shutdown - svchost.exe memory err

On my new desktop, I've been fighting to install itunes. This was frought with problems from the first try, but I'll skip all those sordid details. Escalating from some earlier more simple attempts to uninstall & reinstall iTunes, I just went through what must be the Ultimate exhaustive complete uninstall process, shown at support.apple.com/kb/HT1926 (Completely Remove iTunes and Quicktime). As this section instructs, I then reinstalled iTunes from a fresh download. Between the uninstall and reinstall, my system shut down normally, with no hangs. As always, though, with itunes installed, I get an interruption at shutdown:
    svchost.exe Application Error
The instruction at "0x77dd6bcc" referenced memory at "0x77dd6bcc". The memory could not be "written".
Three more clicks of "cancel" on that advisory only serve to shift the code a few digits or letters (i.e. 0x77df5655, etc), and then the system is hung for good on "Saving Your Settings..."
This hang did't happen before my attempts at installing itunes.
On my last two attempts at this, at least the radio function has come back - nothing worked before. But I can't tolerate a hang at shutdown in my life - it'll happen every time from now on & who knows what else will be affected by this.
    Any help appreciated.

    <bump>
    Anyone?

  • Mac Pro sometime hangs on shutdown

    Hi everyone,
I have a brand new Mac Pro. The only issue I have now and then is the system will hang when I go to shutdown, requiring me to hold the power button in for the 3 secs. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I thought that maybe VirusBarrier X4 was the issue, but I have since removed it and I still experience this at times.
    Thanks,
    Tony

Any time you force or interrupt shutdown, which is when files are written to disk, directory is being updated, and the old and new volume information tables are written... you really need to either do a fsck on next startup; do a Safe boot to insure that the system does a check; or, option boot to your repair/emergency system drive.
It can take a minute. And the fewer of those background programs the better - like VB 4 - which may or may not be compatible (and sometimes just because it works with a bare test system of Apple software doesn't mean it works when other processes are present).
Try repairing the drive with your DVD or single user mode and running fsck. Then with Disk Warrior 4. And delete the caches and verify or files.
I don't know of any USB or FW device that will cause a system to hang on shutdown, but that doesn't mean there isn't.
