PowerMac G4 MDD (FW800) will NOT boot...possible PSU????

Hi - just bought a used Dual 1.42 MDD with FW800....replaced the heatsink, RAM, hard drive, and DVD drive and was trying to boot it to load 10.5. I can not get it to boot or display any video beofre going to the fail-safe fan rush.
I searched the forum and read several posts concerning MDDs not being able to boot.....so I have performed some of the recommended troubleshooting steps - no avail. So here is my situation and the facts:
This is what happens when you power up the unit:
1. Both fans power up.
2. Red light on the motherboard lights
3. DVD (brand new) does an initial spin with the light coming on for about 8-10 seconds
4. Then fans go into overdrive with a loud, continuous roar
5. No video out
6. Seems the hard drives do not power up.
Here's what I have done so far:
1. Reset the PMU several times and different recommended techniques
2. Removed the battery, probably needs replacing...but should boot w/out it...right?
3. Swapped bootable drives...checked jumpers...still no power going to drives
4. The CAPS LOCK light on the Apple keyboard will not come on...so possibly the USB ports are not getting power
5. reseated the video card as well as all the RAM modules
I will test the PSU based on the recommendations from other posts - but was curious, based on the above facts, can it be safely determined that the PSU is bad (no CAPS LOCK light and no power to hard drives).
Any other ideas or suggestions....thanks.
jc

I agree with Japamac, it's odd that the HDs aren't spinning up. I bet they are but you can't hear them over the fans. The best it to use tester on them. Another thought it to unplug the fans, and startup the MDD with the case open -- be sure you ground yourself. You'll probably hear the HD 'click' when they startup; otherwise, if you touch the top (non-circuit board side) you can usually hear them vibrate.
Even if the HDs weren't getting any power, I'm not sure that would cause the wicked fans. One thing you can try is to disconnect the data cables to the HDs (and the power too), and see if the Mac will boot without the roaring fans. If possibile try booting from the Installer CD -- hold down the mouse button at startup to open the tray. You may need to boot again to actually boot from the CD/DVD. Completely dead HDs on the data buses can cause your Macs to have fits -- if they're not getting any power they'll appear dead.
I will not say with authority that it's not the PSU, but it may not. I've experienced what you described twice -- all issues with CPU board.
1. I bought for about $10 a condition-unknown 1.42 GHz dual card (low risk, high reward). At startup I get the bong, mb lights, no video signal, and the roar of the fans. The card gives roaring fans on both my 133MHz and 167MHz boards, which I know both work.
2. When I tried to undo an unsuccessul 133MHz to 167MHz motherboard FSB overclock. I didn't stir my conductive paint well, and I suspect the CPUs were clocked differently or overclocked way too high. I got the roaring fans at startup in this unstable situation with my bad paint job on the bus-multipliers (on the CPU board) and motherboard.
Without tinkering with the motherboard. I then put my other known working 1.25GHz dual CPU board, and I started up without issue. So something seemed out of what with the work on the bus-multipliers. I confirmed that when removed all the paint, put the other CPU board back in (the one that caused roaring fans with my bad painting) and I started without issue.
I've since gotten better with conductive paint, and the motherboard is back to 133Mhz and that old CPU is clocked properly (and since replaced).

This machine was used daily until February 2007. From then till the last week of September 2009 the machine was in storage and was not powered up
When tried for the first time in over 2 years, the machine powered up and the main switch on the front of the computer came on but no audible chime was heard. The machine will not boot & no display (apart from grey screen visible).
The 3.6 v lithium battery was replaced. PRAM & NVRAM has been reset via the keyboard commands : CommandOption+PR keys. After this, the chimes would work on power up but nothing is visible on screen. Also although the keyboard is functional evidenced by the success of the PRAM reset commands, the num & caps lock lights will not work nor will the CD drive "arrow" eject button. I have also removed the battery, reset the PMU on the logic board, and left the machine for over 30 minutes before powering up again:
Please advise if there is anything else I can try before I take it to a dealer for repair ?
    Many thanks
    Mike

    Try a PMU reset.

Power Mac G5 will not boot. when i push the power button i have the normal chime and the screen comes up with mac os x starting and it freezes or goes to black and then the fan noise becomes Lauder and Lauder. at this point i don't have keyboard or mouse control. any idea? i already reset the PRAM and SMU and not helping at all.

Hi! Run the hardware test that came with your computer to see if it boots. You could have a dead hard drive. You might also try booting from the OSX install disc with the hard drive unhooked. This would give you an idea if the hardware is ok. Tom

  • Powermac G4 1,5ghz will not boot after OS update or software install

I have a very strange problem. A book is fallen on Powermac G4 12" 1,5 ghz from the bookshell when the laptop was open. It landed neer the space bar.
Since then, my powerbook works most of the time if I clean install the OS (tried with 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 cd's), works most of the time, sometimes the problem stays. If i update the OS or install for example Ms office the problem will show up agian.
The problem is the powerbook will not start up anymore. The powerup screen shows with the apple logo and after a minute he reboots again. The powerbook does not start up anymore. the problem is solved when I reinstall an OS. But when i update of install software it's there again.
    Strange?????

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test that is on one of the discs that were originally shipped with the computer?

  • HPE 180T will not boot after PSU Swap

    Greetings,
I just ordered a new video card for my HEP 180T and of course it requires a higer rated PSU so I purchased a Corsair GS700 but have ran into an issue now...computer will not work.  I'm 100% positive that all cables are hooked up properly and have even eliminated the dvd drives temporarily.  The computer appears to turn on properly, the PSU lights up, fans spin and then 20 seconds later it shuts off and begins cyclng this 20 second power on, off, on, off etc... and now I'm lost.
It should be noted that I also tried a Thermaltake PSU which was virtually identical with the EXACT same issue occuring.
Do you think for some strange reason I will need to clear the CMOS for the new PSU to function properly? I sure the heck have never heard of this before having built numerous custom PC's before.
    This question was solved.

    DHSFed, welcome to the forum.
This is a strange problem.  Clearing the CMOS certainly won't do any harm.  Have you tried your original PSU to assure that you didn't fry something while installing the new PSU?  This wouldn't be out of the question.

  • PowerMac Will NOT Boot up

Last night my PowerMac G5 seemed like it was hung up. I had to shut it off to get it to do anything. It hasn't booted since. I went through all the diagnostic BS, verified the disk, checked the permissions, booted in verbose mode and it end up hanging when it gets to something that said something about CiscoVPN. I have Cisco VPN software loaded on the box. I have used it for months so I'm not sure why all of a sudden it is a problem. So, i brought the PC to the Apple store. Genius could not get it to boot or start in Safe mode either. TOld me to try the Archive and Install. I brought it home and did that. Now it boots but I get no icons or toolbar. I get part of the spotlight toolbar in the upper right. It is about 1/2" long. Nothing happens. Does the same thing if I start in safe mode.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? I am getting a little upset with my Mac. Not sure why this machine will not boot. Don't want to lug it to the Apple store again.

Well, I can't say for sure what's wrong. What I would do if it were mine...
Swap out memory chips if you can. If you have four, take out two and see what happens. If it works, one (or maybe even both, but probably not both) of the chips you took out is bad. If it doesn't work, swap out the others. If you only have two, try them in different slots.
If you have an external firewire HD that can boot your Mac, install an OS on that and see what happens. If it works, you're probably looking and a bad HD.
Since there are a lot of other components that could also have failed, there's no telling what exactly it is, but memory and HD's are the most common causes of pain.
You mentioned doing the standard troubleshooting BS - if you haven't pressed the PMU reset button or booted into open firmware mode and doing a reset, make sure you add those to the standard troubleshooting BS bag-O-tricks.
If none of the above work, I'd try backing up my important data, erasing the HD and doing a fresh install.
    Good luck,
    Jeff

Do you get a boot tone (chime) when you power up?
If it does, try a safe boot by powering with the shift key held down.
If it doesn't, you have a fundamental problem to deal with.  Are any LEDs on the logic board illuminated after you power up?
If so, this might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2652

My Mac G4 at work will not boot. When it tries to boot up, all I can see is a grey screen with a flashing folder icon. I've tried to use the command-option-p-r key combo to re-start the machine, no luck. I know they shut the power down last night, but im positive that the computer was off. TIA

  • My powermac dual g5 will not boot up and/or wake up from being asleep

My power mac will not boot up. I hit the power button and it mades the first sound but not the boot sound. My keyboard will not light up or turn on. I replaced the pram battery I hought that might help. It didn't. I am not sure hot to open the disc drive w/o the keyboard working. I am not sure what to do next. I did not hear any clicking from the hard drive. I hope my hard hasn't died. I am running  os 10.4.9  Thanks!

If you can get an external 3,5" HDD enclosure, I'd take out the disk(s) that are not backed up, and back them up first on another computer. (You actually should have had bootable backups in the first place, but it's never too late to learn, you learn the hard way ;-)
I could be wrong but I still have a strong feeling that it's a PSU problem.
Good news: if your fans still work, the PSU is not blown (yet). I suspect that dust could cause the symptoms you're seeing.
You have access to an air compressor? Preferably one that has a moist filter. (Canned air is way too expensive, but an option if you don't know anybody with a decent air compressor. Pressure of a can is lower too)
I'd first try to blow it out without disassembly. The PSU is on the bottom, so blow through the frontgrid at the bottom.
You won't be able to get all the dust out, but it might work allready.
I recommend you do this outside, and be surprised by the huge dustcloud that comes out, and be glad you didn't do it in your house.
If that didn't work, I would disassemble your G5, take the PSU out, blow it out more thoroughly, by opening the case of the PSU.
You will find links to guides how to do this in the thread I mentioned in my previous post.

  • G4 powermac will not boot up nomally unless i boot up in safe mode help ?

My G4 power mac will not boot up when switched on itakes several re boots and somtimes crashes.
Will boot up in safe mode. but this only allows me to use some of the application software i need and not all of them.
Can anyone help I thought it could be the hardisk but why would it boot up in safe mode?

Boot from the Tiger installation disc 1 (hold down 'C' on startup). Don't touch the installer, go to the menu bar and select Disk Utility (I think it's in the Tools menu on Tiger).
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.). Run Repair Disk.
If problems are reported, run it again until the green message says the disc seems to be OK.
Quit DU, quit the installer and restart.
If DU says there are problems it can't fix, you may need DiskWarrior.
Either way, let us know the results please.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD Will not Boot

I have a dual 1.25. I had the screen come up and tell me you have to restart.
restarted computer and now it will not boot. I get a black screen, cannot boot from CD, CD lights up then turns off. All fans turn on, the start up chime, chimes. Mouse does not seem to work, no lights and neither does keyboard. reset pmu by pressing button on mother board. removed PRAM battery and replace after 30 seconds. There is a red led lit on mother board, close to the RAM. I have replaced video card, not fixed. I have reseated every board I can, including ram. I am at a total loss. i hold down option, nothing happens. Help..
I have a WD 1.5 TB with full operating system on it, plugged in via fire wire, and i cannot boot from that. I was downloading from an FTP when the force reboot happened.

Will try that next, have appointment at genius bar, just thought i would bounce it off some people here. I did disconnect all peripherals, and unplugged battery for 5 minutes. I did not replace PRAM battery, but would the mouse and keyboard not work because of PRAM>? Anyways, still trying. Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

  • G4 PowerMac will not Boot!!

Hi, A friend has asked me for some help with his 733Mhz G4 PowrMac. At the moment the machine has OSX 10.4 installed. An external DVD reader/writer was borrowed to install this, as the optical drive is only a CD reader/writer. The G4 will not boot at the moment, you hear the start up chime and then, the swirly start up thing just keeps swirling. I thought the best thing to do was try to access Disk Utility. But we no longer has access to the external DVD RW. My question is. Is there anything else that we can boot the machine from i.e. Ipod, large USB pen drive. I'm not sure if this can be done?? If it can, could someone please post up guide to this!! Any help would be great!! Thanks in advance!!

  • G5 will not boot into OSX - stays at a command-line prompt

My G5 will not boot into OS X. I would appreciate and and all advice. Thanks.
    What happened:
I had the G5 running one morning, with the Isight camera on, plugged into the front-console firewire port. I was running EvoCam software.
At about 2 hours into running, the cam stopped broadcasting – I got home to check it out three hours later, and the screen was black, and the fan was louder than I had ever, ever heard it on this box.
I did a hard shut-down with the powerbutton on the Cinema Display monitor.
At reboot, I see a grey screen for approx 5 seconds, with a dark grey apple logo, and then the screen goes to black, with a command-line prompt.
It’s been like that ever since.
I ran the Apple Hardware test, from the internal CD drive, and it shows no errors.
I cannot boot from an OSX installer DVD. It won’t recognize it. It goes straight to the black screen and Command line prompt.
I have re-seated the RAM, as well as the Airport Card. The only other card – which I have not re-seated, it the video card.
I am able to use the machine in Target Mode, so I can extract data from the drives, which is great. Oddly enough, I’m able to use the front-console firewire port to connect to my other Mac in Target mode – with no problems. Also – in Target mode, the fan never goes above the usual quiet self.
I would appreciate any advice one can provide. Thanks!
    The machine:

  • Power Mac G4 400 MHz (AGP graphics) will not boot from hard drive

    I have a Mac G4 400 MHz (AGP graphics) Machine Model: PowerMac 3.1 CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (2.8)
When I try to boot from the hard drive I get the folder with the flashing question Mark. The Machine will start up from the OSX 10.4 installer disk.
The system was running OSX 10.4.9 fine. I began to have problems with the hard drive, so I replaced it with an old Maxtor 5T040H4 40Gig Apple branded drive that I had sitting around.
The drive is jumpered (r50) for Master/Single.
I erased the drive in the old G4 using disk utility and wrote all zeros. I then used my store bought Tiger 10.4 install disk to install 10.4 on the drive.
After restarting I still get the flashing question mark. If I leave the Install disk in the DVD drive the system will attempt to install again.
I have zapped the PRAM, pressed the CUDA button, removed the battery and let the system sit unplugged for over and hour and it still will not boot from the hard drive.
To test the drive I removed it and put it in a Granite Digital firewire enclosure and connected it to another mac. The drive shows up and the system appears to be installed correctly.
What am I forgetting to do? Does anyone have any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.
    Wesley G.

Hi! If Tom's solution doesn't work I would reboot from the install disc and then partition the drive as 1 partition instead of erasing it. Sounds like the driver on the disk is too old and installing a new partition map should write a new driver to the drive that is compatible with Tiger. Other than that it is possible that the drive has a spin delay jumper enabled and the drive isn't spinning up fast enough and the computer isn't looking long enough for the drive. Tom
