PowerMac G4 PPC needs X11 to run OpenOffice!?

I finally got my used PowerMac G4 PPC working and decided to download OpenOffice as my office application of choice. The trouble is that when I try to run it, I am told it cannot run because something called X11 is not installed. How/where can I find this missing application?

I have run OO and MSO on the same drive under Windows, so see no reason you should have trouble under Mac.

Unfortunately for me, I found that Aqua installed seemingly with no problem but I have yet to be able to get it to actually run.
I used to use MS Office all the time and even taught my Computer students a little about it but have now switched 100% over to OpenOffice as, so far, the documents are directly compatible with either program. I will typically create an OO document and then save it in MSO format for those who do not yet have OO.
Unfortunately, I'm doing all this on a WinTel machine, not a Mac, as I cannot get OO to run ... yet. If you can get it to run on a PPC at all, please let me know how you did it.

  • Running OpenOffice using X11?

I have a couple of problems running OpenOffice using X11 with Leopard 10.5.1. When I try to start OpenOffice from the dock, it opens an X11 window but then says "Command timed out." before launching OpenOffice. OpenOffice then launches when I click "O.K." in the message window but the wizards (e.g., fax wizard in Writer) don't work. I get a message saying, "OpenOffice.org requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. Please install a JRE and restart OpenOffice.org." I thought I had a JRE installed with Leopard. No?
Any help with either of these issues would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to get away from MS Word and like that OpenOffice is free and available in the Windows platform as well. Thanks.

    It's an X11 issue.

I installed the lastest version of xquartz - http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz

For now NeoOffice 2.2.2 patch 8 is the cat's meow.

I agree with Grant. But to answer your question, that would be Word 2008. A quick search turns it up on sale at Amazon. You'll need to find it somewhere other than Microsoft itself, since MS stopped selling it when they released Word 2011.

  • Need X11... mac says it's installed but I can't find it anywhere

My computer won't let me install X11 from the apple site because it says a newer version is already installed on my computer... except that I can't find said program anywhere. I don't have my discs, they're in florida and I'm in NY. I didn't install things off of the disks because I assumed that everything I'd possibly need would be already installed. What can I do? I can't access the invisble X11 that's already "installed". I know this because I tried to install OpenOffice and it said I needed X11, and told me where to download it.
So I need a program to install a program, but I already have the needed program, except that it's invisible.

Yes, a site helping me install OpenOffice was telling me that I hve to go to the library and remove the X11User.pkg file in order to force it to uninstall so I could ACTUALLY install it... but that file is not in the library. I do hve administrator's access, too.

  • Help for Mac users with 10.4+ needing X11

Regarding the issue of Mac users needing X11 installed, and that requiring the install DVD (for OSX 10.4+) which many of our users don't have or can't locate or don't want to mess with:
I found this: http://speedyb.osnn.net/X11User.pkg.zip from a google search. Downloaded it and installed and worked great.
    Hope this helps.
Since Apple isn't making this available as a download, maybe Sun could post this to an SGD site to make it more broadly available? I suppose we SGD admins could just make it available on our login page.

What Macs have you run across that don't have it installed? All the ones I've dealt with I didn't have to add X11, apparently it's factory installed?

  • I tried to update iTunes yesterday.  The update failed.  Now when I try to open iTunes it says that the version isn't localized and needs to be run in English.  It has never been in another language.

I attempted to update iTunes yesterday.  The update failed.  iTunes now won't open and displays an error message that the program isn't localized and needs to be run in the English version.  I'm in the US and the computer and program has never been used in another language.  I tried reinstalling the full download for the new version and that failed as well.  I logged out; shut down; restarted; retried the update; etc.  Still no luck and the same message.  Thoughts?

If the above doesn’t do the trick entirely, then use the instructions in the following as it applies to the version of Windows you are using:
HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP
HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
You may be required to boot into safe mode to complete the folder deletion process.

Not using Boot Camp, but you should be able to using virtualization software such as Parallels to run Windows concurrently with OS X.

But how do you install the drivers if Bootcamp is running interference?
Bottom line, I'ev tried to install three different versions of updated ATI driver sover the last few momnths and on each and every occassion have ended up with the original Bootcamp driver. A number of current games are unplayable on a Mac running Bootcamp as a result.
And if I can't run the software I want, then Bootcamp is as useless as boobs on a bull.

I want to use microsoft office on my mac. I need it to run on windows platform. Which is better: boot camp or parallels 7 ?

    Welcome to Apple Communities
You can install Office for Mac. If you don't want it, Boot Camp uses all the hardware, so it has the best performance for Windows, and Parallels allows you to run Windows in Mac without reboot and without Boot Camp. To use only this, download Parallels

How do I get Internet Explore on my Max OS X, I need it to run work programs?

If you are running an intel machine, you have Boot Camp on your machine, use it to install Windows on the partition it makes, and then you can use Internet Explorer.  If you don't have an intel, you can use a virtual windows program, something like Parallels or VM ware.

  • Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to use it?

Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to have it work right?

Netboot and Software Update, at its simplest.  Mac OS X Server also expects to have functional IP networking and DNS services (somewhere) on the LAN (and if you're behind a NAT gateway, then the DNS server(s) are on your LAN and not out at your ISP), or things get weird.  SUS (usually) works out of the box, outside of cases where there's an outbound firewall.  Netboot can be more effort to setup, in terms of what you're loading into the clients.
