PowerMac G4 Quicksilver Powers On Doesn't Boot

PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 867Mhz (2001)
Running OS 10.5.8. 1.5Gb RAM.
Ny old machine has been running well. Recently after "shutdown" the machine would hang and I would have to powerdown by pressing the power button.
Did some reading on the topic and it suggested that resetting the PRAM might help. I tried this but have run into a problem.
When I press the powerbutton to turn on the Mac, the Power button lights and the machine turns on, *but then the Powerbutton light goes out*. *Normally it would stay on*. The machine then just sits there and doesn't boot up. Nothing happens, and after a while I power the Mac off using the powerbutton.
I did this again with the PowerMacs door open. The main boards little red light comes on, and the fans are working. However I think the Mac Mouse and the keyboard aren't responding/receiving power.(?). (The little red light under the mac Mouse doesn't come on).
I did further reading and tried pressing the "PMU" button, (just once as advised), to reset the "Power Management Unit".
This didn't improve the situation.
As of this writing the PowerMac will power on, the powerbutton light doesn't stay on, and will not boot up. I've read as many posts as I can without finding anything relevant to resolving the issue.
I've tried booting from various disc's but as I said, I don't think the keyboard is responding.
Any suggestions for what to try next, most welcome.

It may boot successfully that way, although the date and time may be off.
The internal battery provides power to maintain PRAM and clock chip settings when the machine is unplugged; as long as the machine is plugged in to live power, a trickle current is used from that rather than the battery (which is the reason for a small spark appearing whn plugging a machine in).
However, not everything is turned on at the same instant - there is electronic switching circuitry that, once initiated via the on button, sequences the power on to various sections. For some reason the presence of a less-than-adequate battery can affect that sequencing negatively. Sometimes removal of a poor battery will allow normal startup.

Okay, this same exact thing has just happened to my Power Book G4. I have some important stuff on there and I haven't had the chance to back up my stuff in the last couple of weeks. For those of you who've has this problem repaired, did it wipe out all the stuff on your hard drive? I called apple and they told me to connect it to another apple computer and using target disk mode I should be able to get my stuff off of it, but this did not work. Why would they even tell me to try this? My computer turns on, but doesn't boot up! Is there anyway to save anything on my hard drive? Apple said I could also go to the nearest apple store, but that's like 150 miles away from me. Am I just screwed?

You might try booting from from the Install & Restore disc that came with your machine by:
1. Inserting the disk, pressing the power button, and immediately after the startup chime, press and hold the C key until you see the spinning gear icon appear on the grey splash screen.
2. After the machine has booted, pick your language, and when the Installer window appears, do not press Continue, but go to the Utilities menu in the menubar and open Disk Utility.
3. In Disk Utility, choose your normal startup volume in the pane on the left and then click Repair Disk. If any errors show in the window, run Repair Disk again until you see 'The volume appears to be OK' in green.
4. Quit Disk Utility, quit the installer and attempt to restart into your regular startup volume.

HP Stream 7-Windows 10 doesn't boot, I can't recovery 8.1 because can't boot from USB-HELP please!!

Some days ago I tried to install Windows 10 TP upgrading 8.1 with Bing. After some waiting time it succeeded, but unfortunately I forgave to put in the tablet's SSD the hp drivers, thinking they weren't necessary. So touchscreen, WiFi and all the other stuff didn't work. After I collegated via OTG a keyboard and a mouse I managed to use Windows 10.
Trying to install drivers, my fault, I opened an .exe of Realtek (maybe for the audio), tablet asked to reboot and after that I cannot access to Windows anymore.
I tried to boot Windows 8.1 from a USB, but it doesn't boot, the same even if i disable secure boot.
With disabled bitlocker Windows gives this error

The Stream doesn't consider the USB absolutely XD
If I enable again the secure boot Windows gives this error (that at 99% is caused by the .exe I installed):
Rebooting the Stream a couple of time with secure boot it goes in a menu (where touchscreen works) where there are a lot of options to reset Windows, but none of them works. If I try to format from this menu it asks for my account's password, but it doesn't accepts the mine :/
If I try to open the recovery (from volume minus button when it starts) it gives this message:

Hi everyone. I think I have found a solution to this problem. Short background story, I too tried to install Windows 10 (10049) via Windows Update but I was never successful - got stuck at around 30% for more than an hour. I tried to restore to 8.1 but it gave me that 0xc000000f error. Luckily I had made a recovery image to USB before updating to Windows 10.
Please note that by doing this method, you will obviously lose your data.
Here's what you'll need:
- Recovery USB (if you don't have one, grab it from this link and I thank you that person from another post). Follow the instructions, this is just basically clean, format to FAT32, set primary and active, and then drag and drop the files and folders from the USB folder to the root USB drive. This particular recovery is from a 5701 model, there is actually no difference between Stream 7 models in terms of hardware, but software is configured differently (different language setup/format) depending on the country/region it's sold.
- OTG cable
- Powered USB hub
- USB Mouse and Keyboard
- A moment of your time
1. Plug in the OTG cable to the tablet, and then plug in the USB hub to power and to the OTG. After that, plug in the USB mouse and keyboard and Recovery USB to the USB hub.
2. Boot the tablet to BIOS by holding down Power + Volume Down at the same time, until you reach the Startup Menu.
3. Press F10 and navigate to System Configuration > Boot Options. In this menu, we'll have to restore the settings to default.
So if you have disabled Secure Boot, you first need to Clear All Secure Boot Keys and then Load HP Factory Default Keys. Then enable Secure Boot.
Make sure UEFI Boot Order is also default to as follows: OS boot Manager, USB Diskette, USB CD/DVD, Network Adapter.
If you did not make any changes, proceed to 4.
4. Be prepared to go back to the Startup Menu, because as soon as you press F10 and hit Yes, the tablet will automatically restart. So press and hold the Volume Down button after you hit on Yes.
5. Press F9 and select Boot From EFI File. If you've done the recovery image ghosting correctly onto the Recovery USB, you should see two entries. One should be RECOVERY and the other may depend (it could be SYSTEM or No label). Select RECOVERY, and then select bootmgr.efi.
At this point the tablet will boot off from the USB and will bring you to Windows Recovery.
6. Select your keyboard layout, and navigate to Troubleshoot > Reset your PC.
If the drive partition/boot manager is not damaged, it will ask for a recovery key. You can actually skip this step and hide the numpad, revealing the option Skip this drive if you don't have the recovery key anymore, or just really want to start anew.
If the drive partition/boot manager is damaged, the Reset will proceed and will ask you to select a target operating system. In my case it was Windows 8.1.
7. The next screen will be about Reset your PC telling you what's going to happen. Tap Yes > Yes, repartition the drives > Fully clean the drive > Reset.
The tablet will now do its thing and restore to factory default.
After restoration, a BIOS screen will come up asking if you want to clear the TPM keys. Select Yes, and this will create a new key for the restored installation, bringing you back to a fully factory default tablet.
Notes:
I recommend not installing a generic Windows 8.1 ISO that is copied straight to the USB drive using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool or RUFUS. They won't be compressed or the same as WIMBOOT, which will take up more storage space than stock recovery.
You could actually install another version of Windows 8.1 on the tablet, assuming you know what you are doing (ie. making a WIMBOOT image).
You could also actually install Windows Technical Preview directly, again, assuming you know what you are doing.
This is just a guide to help you try recover your tablet from a failed Technical Preview installation. I hold no responsiblities over your actions.
What I recommend is that use 8.1 for now, and wait for the official release (or at least a more stable Technical Preview release for this tablet if you can't wait that long) of Windows 10.

Mac mini doesn't boot

Hi,
My 2009 Mac mini doesn't boot anymore : all I get is a blank screen, I can't even chose to boot on the restoration drive.
From your experience, what do you think it could be linked with ? motherboard ? RAM ? It doesn't looke like a hard drive issue.

Hello! I'm having, what sounds like, the same issue. Everything was working fine, until I ran a combined update, as prompted, for 10.8.2. After the normal reboot, the computer boots to a plain, white screen with no Apple. The computer is not responding to any keyboard command at startup, be it any of the reset commands, 'C' to boot to the optical drive, or option to select the startup destination. When pressing the Caps/Num lock keys, I notice that none of the LED lights will turn on on the keyboard. The piggybacked optical mouse is not showing it's red light from the bottom either. These tested fine on my MacBook Pro, however, and have always worked with the Mac Mini. Connecting and reconnecting the devices does not help. I know how to run all of the hard disk repairs, the permission fixes, etc., but it appears as though something is stopping my USB devices from being utilized (or even powered) at startup. I work in IT, and I support Apple computers every day (point being, I do know my stuff).
I opened the case and disconnected the hard drive from the logic board, thinking a potential hard disk issue is to blame. Upon restart, I still get the BONG (chime), but the machine will still not respond to any keyboard commands. Plugging in a USB stick that was created as a Mountain Lion boot device in Disk Utility with the InstallESD.dmg doesn't yield any results (as I am unable to 'tell' the computer to boot from it). The system disc that was packaged with the Mini is in the optical drive, but the Mini won't boot to that either. I'm at a complete loss. This is a 2010 model which was purchased new in December in that year. I'm using HDMI directly to an HDTV. The cable is working, the TV is working, the optical drive works in another machine, and the hard disc makes the necessary sounds (but not anything out of the ordinary).
To reiterate, this happened IMMEDIATELY after installing the combined 10.8.2 update. I am seeing a lot of posts about this issue, but no actual solutions. The dialogue seems to die somewhere after, "Reset the PRAM."

G4 Quicksilver Dual 1Gig chimes and boots normally, sometimes nothing??

Some what of a quirky problem and I don't know what else to check. I'm suspecting the processor, but once booted the system works great, so maybe it's not the processor. Here what happens.
If I try to start the computer from a cold system that's been shutdown for a while, I will never even get a chime or a system boot. Understand, the power supply appears to be working normally, as the fans spin and the drives fireup. However, either the motherboard or processor won't post. Now, if I sit there and work with it, repeatedly forcing a restart by holding down the start button, allow it to shut down, then doing a restart, eventually it does chime and then starts normally. However, I may have to repeat this 5 or 6 times (or more) before I get a chime and a boot up. Again, once it's booted everything works normally. I'm tending towards the processor being the problem, as I've exchanged the processor with a 933MHz, and it boots every time. I've also removed the processor and re-installed it (this is the Dual 1 GIG processor) into a different Quicksilver. The results are exactly the same. Sometimes it will boot normally and sometimes nothing.
As I said, once I get the computer started, everything works great. Oh, and if I leave the computer running, no problems with operating at all. It's just the start up where this issue arises. Both of the motherboards I tested the processor on are the 1342-B models, and known to be operational.
More info: The hard drive being used is an older model 20 GB, Western Digital - IDE drive, but it passes all the disk utility checks once it formated. Also, I have 1.25 GB of SDRAM installed and it all checks out as good.
Any suggestions of what else could be causing this? Are there any firmware updates for these model (2002) Quicksilvers that I need to install? Any help or ideas of what to check would be greatly appreciated.

Grant - Thanks for your help. I will try to burn the disk image of the AHT program, and see what it shows. However, I doubt if it will show any abnormalities, though, as the diagnostics section, under the "About This Mac" > "More Info" section shows that it passes the diagnostics once it boots.
Lou - Thanks for your reply also! I suppose it's possible there could be a stress crack somewhere on the PCB for the processor. However, I would tend to rule out the motherboard having one that could cause this, as it (the Processor/Boot issue) does exactly the same on two separate motherboards. That tends to tell me it's probably some sort of a processor issue (though it works just fine once booted). It's got me stumped.
Limmos - Thanks to you also! The batteries on both motherboards are relatively new (only a couple of months old). Also, I'm familiar with re-setting the PRAM, and the PMU reset button. There s an issue that I'll bring up here regarding the PMU button. If I try to start the computer and it fails to boot as my question states, then I can try 10 times or more and the results are the same. Meaning it doesn't boot. However, if I shut down, open the case and press the PMU button (5 secs or more), then within a couple of times doing that I can get a good boot. So clearing the PMU cache does seem to help.
Oh, and another thing I've noticed is I can "RESTART" without any hang up, or failure to boot. By that I mean if the system is running and I reboot the system, there is no problem restarting. It restarts normally. I've done these restarts as many as 6 times in a row just to see if it would fail to boot. Booted every time.

G4 Quicksilver Dual 1gig 2002 Not Booting Up

I have a Powermac G4 Quicksilver Dual 1ghz with 1.5 mb RAM running OSX 10.4.6. Problems started when a friend pulled the power cord out from the mains and realising it, immediately plugged it back to the mains whils computer was in sleep mode.
Now the Mac begins to start up, the cog spins for a short while then just freezes. I tried resetting PMU after removing the battery and leaving for 1 day, still no joy. However this Mac will boot up okay if I hold SHIFT key down.
Also it will boot up okay if the main door is fully open or almost shut with about 1cm remaining open. I have done the following:
1. Removed all the RAM memory except 1 original stick of 512mb.
2. Exchanged memory.
3. Re installed OSX software etc.
4. Ran TechTool Pro v4.1.1 diagnostics
5. Ran Disk Utility, repaired permissions etc.
6. Checked all power cables if they fit okay.
7. Checked Graphics card connections.
8. Checked IDE cable connections.
9. Rest PMU again.
10. Checked for any loose screw or cables internally.
11. Tried different power leads from mains.
12. Scratched my head.
I have been told there may be some sort of possible grounding issue with the metal of the door touching metal of the chasis/ casing, anyone able to shed light on this will be greatly appreciated. I posted this question onto someone elses thread not being aware, sorry I am new to this discussion.

Thanks Rodney, Gary and everyone else who pointed me to investigate possible solutions to my Mac G4 Quicksilver/Dual 1gig which refused to boot up when the door was closed but booted okay when the side door was open.
Well I checked the microswitch on the top rear of the side door and cleaned contacts with Caig Deoxit with cotton buds etc, unplugged all connections and replugged them etc but still no joy.
Finally I found and used an Apple Hardware Test disk, opened the side door and booted up from it then closed the side door and started the tests (normally the Mac used to freeze when I closed the door but not this time). Well the test revealed the Airport Card to be faulty so I removed it and all appears to be okay so far.
I cannot understand why the Airport Card works okay and the Mac booted up okay from both hard drives with the side door open, this remains a mystery to me and I hope to discovere the answer one day. This is such a good forum and I appreciate everyone's input. I will try to get a more upto date Apple Hardware Test disk as mine is 1.2.1 a bit old now.

PowerMac G4 Quicksilver won't turn on

My Dad owns a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 867Mhz computer, with default parts installed, and no add-ons whatsoever. He was using it one night, and it was running fine, and then the next day, he tried to turn it on, and it wouldn't do anything. The light stays on while you're pushing on it, but turns off as soon as you release it. I have tried all the following:
CUDA Switch: Tried a dozen different diagnostic test with this switch, none worked.
Power Supply: Bought a fine new working power supply, switched them out, didn't work.
PRAM Battery: Took a brand new PRAM battery and put that into the computer, didn't work.
Power Cord: Switched out the old power cord with a fine working one, didn't work.
So after all that, what on earth can I do now? If I have to replace the Logic Board I can, but I'd be very surprised if it was the problem. We had no storms, no power surges, no "brown-outs" or anything that would disrupt or damage my Dad's computer, so I'm at a loss as to what it could be. If anyone has any ideas, EVEN if I've already tried them, please post. Thanks.

Try this if tutorial doesn't help;
-I found this on a Mac site. Sometimes computers lose their mind. Don't ask me why or how it happens but it does. Sometimes you simply have to totally discharge the computer. One thing I have learned about the Blue and white and the Gray G4 Macs is that sometimes pushing the PMU is not enough. If your machine is dead, then try the following.
* Unplug the unit.
* Remove the battery
* Push the PMU switch (count to 5 slow)
* Push the start button on the front of the Mac (count to 5 slow)
* Let the unit sit for 15-30 minutes
* Replace the battery
* Plug it back in, and push the start button
If it doesn't work I usually repeat the steps above, pull the RAM, and let it sit longer. If it doesn't work after this, it is take it to the shop time.

USB installation doesn't boot

I installed Arch linux to an USB drive in Virtualbox. I started Virtualbox as root, so I was able to use the USB drive, and install Arch linux to it. The problem is when I try to boot the USB drive on my old PC (it has no HDD, this is why I need Arch linux on an USB pendrive), the GRUB boot manager doesn't start, it simply freezes after it printed the 4 letters of GRUB. I also tried Syslinux boot manager (also with the -s option), with similar result: hangs at the logo message. My old PC is a Kobian KT266a FDSX mainboard + 1.8 Ghz Athlon XP, the BIOS was updated years ago, so USB boot is theoratically supporetd. I tested it with the Smart Boot Manager, and it worked fine with the USB stick, though I don't know how to use Smart Boot Manager with Arch linux. What can I do to successfully boot from an USB stick on my old PC using the supported boot managers GRUB or Syslinux?

Thx for the tip, but I need a full console-only installation on the USB stick, because I want to use my old computer for automating everyday tasks. It has a lower power consumption than my new computer. For example when I want to upload files, I just drop them on the 16 GB USB stick, powered by Arch linux, switch the old computer on, leave home, and without my interaction the files should be uploaded. When tasks are all ready, computer will shut down automatically. This is my plan with my old dusty computer. The only problem is it simply doesn't boot from the USB port, however the BIOS were updated to the latest 2.2a version (dated back to 2003), and it theoretically can boot from a wide range of USB devices. I think I must properly prepare the USB drive, eg. formatting, partition table, appropriate BOOT manager, maybe USB-ZIP, or even USB floppy emulation to be able to get handled by the old BIOS.

Applecare CD Doesn't Boot

I cannot start up my mini using the applecare cd that came with it.
the CD does state (as well as the documentation) to hold the C key down while rebooting.
I can do this successfully with my OSX install disc but not so with the applecare disc. I have a macbook (with applecare) and I tried using that cd also thinking perhaps the mini applecare cd is bad but no dice that one doesn't boot up either.
any suggestions? While I don't need to repair anything now, I'd rather have that functionality working and available so in case I do need it in the future.

The MacBook AppleCare CD will probably not boot since it must be specifically designed for Intel-based Macs
I know, but since the mini applecare cd wasn't working I was trying to see if the macbook's cd would
try holding the Option key (right after the startup chime) instead and
select the AppleCare volume from Startup Manager.
I'll be trying that next
TechTool Deluxe is on the CD and check whether it is compatible with your version of OS X
I'll double check the version, but the applecare cd came with my mini so I would hope its a compatible version.
I'm also going to see if the macbook will boot up with the cd (its own applecare cd)

You need to use the computer's install disks to repair the hard drive or install a new OS.

K9N Platinum - Doesn't boot with PWR2 connected

Hi,
I've just built a new PC with a K9N Platinum Motherboard (7250 Ver 1.0)
I immediately discovered a problem:
-If I connect to the power supply the PWR2 Molex (the additional power connector on the motherboard, to provide additional power to the video card) the system doesn't boot. Computer's LEDs get on for half a second, then it shuts down.
-If I deconnect the PWR2 connector, computer boots fine.
Bios already flashed to 1.51... no results.
It sounds weird to me. I have an Enermax Noisetaker II 485W PSU, the CPU is an Athlon X2 65W...
Have I got a damaged mainboard?

In the last time, my MacBook Pro is very slow and crashes sometimes if I open iPhoto or some other programs.
Sometimes, there comes a black display with some thin white lines and then I have to restart the computer.
Also, sometimes the mac doesn't boot right (you see only a grey display after the apple symbole).
I already repaired the system with Disk Utility and erased it to install a backup of my system.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

System doesn't boot kernel26beyond

Since a week or so, my system doesn't boot, unless I press <enter> and the power button a few times during the process.
Once it has booted, everything works fine, but it is highly annoying nevertheless.
it seems to have something to do with loading my hardware.

Then I have to press enter and the powerbutton (asus M6) a few times, and then, a line at a time a couple of messages appear, then after "udev events" has passed, boot proceeds normally.

I tried removing scsi and sata, since my root is on an ide disk. But the problem persists.
also recreating an image using mkinitcpio or reinstalling the kernel26beyond package using pacman doesn't help.
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how this problem might be resolved.
It seems like a trivial issue since the systems basically works fine otherwise. However, I can't figure it out by myself, I have tried for a week.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I suddenly was having a lot of trouble booting. My system would just freeze with a blinking cursor. I thought it had something to do with my floppy drive because if I changed the boot priority in my bios to boot from the hard disk 1st, the system would boot but would hang for a very long time in areas, and as long as 5 minutes loading uevents. I suspected this was a udev problem.
I issued a few commands to reset udev, thinking maybe recent updates didn't take effect, which did the trick...

# udevcontrol reload_rules
After that, everything is back to normal. I'm still learning about udev and I'm still fuzzy about a lot of the techy stuff.

Tecra S1 doesn't boot and hangs at (boot) splash screen

Problems started a month ago. It randomly didn't booted. After some power off/on tries it finally booted and worked properly. Because it happened more often I've bought a new hard drive (Toshiba 40 GB). I've had Acronis True Image and planned to make a disk clone to the new drive. The problem is that a notebook now doesn't boot anymore so I cannot boot it from A CD nor hard drive. It stops at "In Touch..." logo with "Press [F12] for the boot device selection menu" text and doesn't react any key. I tried to boot with no CD, no hard drive - the same. I also connected internal HD using ATA-To-USB adapter - the same. Does it mean that's not a disk problem but motherboard or other components? Is it possible to enter BIOS before boot selection screen?

Problem solved. There was a broken PCB under the CPU socket. I've found that pressing with my finger and holding CPU while booting allowed to startup the system while releasing the finger caused system hanging and its total crash. Our local service tried to repair it but with no success. Finally two days ago we've found a working motherboard (a used one) for about 200 USD and now I'm waiting for installing it in the laptop. Th regular price for a new one (about 400 Euro) is too much, but 200 USD is OK. I do like the laptop because of its ports (LPT, RS232). It's used for programming and controlling some older devices. Newer laptops have no LPTs nor RS232s and it's not easy to find a working USB adapter because the software we're using is even from DOS times and has hard-coded IRQs for those ports.
Anyway, I hope it'll back from the service fresh and new, and of course working ;)
