Hi Here's a real Basic question...It's been way too long since I have attempted re-doing a hard drive set up--And I sorta forgot the basics-- I want to up grade PMQuick Silver G4 to 120 GB HD-- I upgraded Processor- tha was a snap- --Now to swap all the data from the 20 GB HD presently in the machine to the 120 GB HD-- as well as upgrade system from 10.4 to 10.5 --
I'm probably making more of it than I should but an ssist wold be appreciated!

You can install the new drive in the QS. No need for external housings.
Jump the drive to Slave and connect it to the middle connector (with the original drive on the end connector).
Boot and open Disk Utility to format the new drive to Mac OS Extended- journaled.
After that, the drive is ready to use.
Using a cloning utility to transfer the contents of the old drive to the new drive is a painless way to make the transition.
I recommend SuperDuper! (the free version is enough) to do the cloning.
There are fewer reports of mishaps, and SD! clones are always bootable.
After cloning, switch jumpers on the drives.
Make the new drive Master, place on the end connector, and make any other drive Slave, placed on the middle connector.

I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)

Unless it has worked since the upgrading, I believe you should uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do.

PowerMac G4 ruining hard drives?

I have a PowerMac G4 dual 500MHz system and about a few months ago the 40GB hard drive that I put in it when I got it (it had no drive originally) started making weird noises and the system would stop responding. Eventually, when I would turn on the system it would goto the Mac OS X login screen and tell me to enter my password (even though I didn't have a password set on this system) so, to make a long story short, I figured the HDD had failed and put the 13GB one in from my iMac G3 (I upgraded the iMac G3 to an 80GB drive and still had the old 13GB). Now, this drive is starting to make the same exact noises and the system is stopping responding. I can't believe this. I never had a problem with a HDD before and now two of them are failing in one system? What is going on with my PowerMac?

There making a strange clicking noise, like turning off and on which is what I think there actually doing (turning off and on). Although it certainly is possible that both drives are failing, I think that the system is somehow causing it. I have never had a hard drive fail before (the 13GB has had quite a lot of use though never had any real issues with it and the 40GB was like new) and never heard any noises like this from any either except in this computer.

13" Macbook pro random freezing after upgrading hard drive.

i have a 2010 mbp 13" 2.4
I upgraded the hhd from the 250 to a 320 5400 RPM drive i cleared the cache did a clean install of osx 10.6 grabbed all the updates and then rolled my time machine to restore all my files.
But now it randomly freezes for about 4-7 seconds. It's extremely annoying and i can't figure out why. Short of a clean install any ideas on what might fix this?

The AHT does test the graphics chips. Run the extended version and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code. Also, there may be a crash log in Console. Try to run something processor intensive so the Mac freezes, and then run the AHT. Heat could be a factor.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and bring in your Mac for evaluation. They would probably have a more comprehensive hardware test they could run. If you get any error codes, bring those along.
It sounds like you could have some sort of hardware problem here. Since you are under warranty, it might be time to let Apple diagnose and fix it. It sounds like you may have had video issues during the first week of ownership with the original hard drive, and these may actually be independent of the hard drive.

Upgrading Hard Drive- Which type of SATA?

Ok, hard drive crashed last night.. 13 mos old. Seems like lots of others are having a similar problem. At any rate, I am going to upgrade, and I noticed that I have to upgrade with a 2.5" SATA connection. When I am surfing for these, I am seeing SATA, SATA-150, and I thought I saw a SATA-300. What is the difference and does it matter which one? I saw a big selection of SATA-150, but only a very few SATA. Not sure if this is one and the same?

In theory the newer sata-150 should be backward compatible with the older sata.
the diffrence between the two is its speed, newer sata has faster speed vs the older one.
however, there has been feedbacks that newer sata is not compatible with g5 and other incompatibilities. On the other hand... as of this time i think they should already fix those incompatibilities so in my opinion all those you saw can be used on your macbook.

HP Pavilion DV6t-3100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - Upgrade hard drive to SSD and windows 8?

I want to upgrade my hard drive (WDC WD6400BEVT-60A0RT0) to SSD for faster performance AND upgrade to Windows 8. How should I proceed? Which should come first?
I am not very knowledgeable about these things, but I have changed hard drives before -- never an SSD though. Never had BIOS problems in these changes, so never bothered with it either. No experience about that. I am practically illiterate about that part.
What should I be careful about? Any SSD drive would work? Would BIOS (F.29) and motherboard (144A 65.38) be relevant? How should I choose my new SSD?
Do I absolutely need to clone C: drive? Could I not install windows 8 fresh/anew? What problems may I have with a new SSD?
In short -- what would be the best and least problematic way to do this?
I will back up my audio, video and office files. All copy-paste stuff. I have no problem with installing all my programs from scratch.

It should be pretty simple _ remove the battery and adapter _ install your SSD _ hold down the power button for 1 full minute.
Eject the DVD tray with the manual eject hole using a bent out paper clip.
Load you W8 disc _ close the tray and plug in the adapter.
Boot up, it should just boot to the W8 disc, if it doesn't there will be a quick flash on the screen when to press the esc key, after that you choose f9 (with out checking) and tell the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD ROM.
(the W8 disc will format the drive automatically)
Get the newest SSD you can find, don't buy old junk from eBay _ always buy from a reputable dealer.
I have Samsung SSD in my dv8 and has no problems, my old dv7 has an Intel SSD and it's been good too _ no problems. Stay away from bargain deals with obscure brand names.
There are no official drivers posted for your machine for W8, so you can/will have to use the generic ones, but some times the HP OEM W7 drivers will work.
Start with you Chipset driver first _ I think it's Intel _ there are no specs listed as your's is a CTO model.
Get the Chipset driver direct from Intel _ they may have updated their auto driver finder to scan in a W8 environment.
Install the rest of the drivers in any order. You can also use Windows update to find the drivers as well, it's up to you.
Be aware that some things may not work in W8, like you finger print reader.
The SSD will behave exactly the same as a standard drive, the only difference is that it will run faster.

After upgrading hard drive on MacBook Pro, Premiere will no longer open

I just upgraded the internal hard drive on my MacBook Pro (mid-2010, unibody), OS 10.8.2, with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 M Graphics card.
I've been running Premiere Pro CS5, and then CS6, on the machine without any problems until I upgraded the hard drive (to a new Seagate Momentus XT SSHD 750GB).
Now, when I load Premiere Pro, I get the following error message: "Adobe Premiere Pro could not find any capable video play modules. Please update your video display drivers and start again."
I've tried everything I can think of, including resetting preferences, and what they suggest here: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/error---preludevideo-play-modules.html (I installed the latest CUDA driver, and my GPU driver is up to date; I am already set up as Admin on my computer).
Another thing I did was go into Terminal and ran GPUSniffer. That was what worried me - it seemed to suggest that the card is not functioning, but I don't know if that means it's not functioning at all or not functioning in ways that Premiere can work with. Any advice? I'm tempted to open it back up and re-install the original hard drive, except that new one is making most other things noticably faster. Booting, opening and closing apps, etc.

It looks like I've solved my problem.
I decided to try again - this time cloning my original drive onto the new one instead of using Time Machine - and now everything seems to work just fine. Just faster. I can only assume that in the restoration process the first time, some necessary files got corrupted or went missing. Thanks, Bill, it was your question that made me wonder whether it might be better to create an image.

Upgrading hard drive and OS - time machine suitable?

I've been keeping regular copies of my system using time machine, but am not sure of it's overall capabilities. I am about to replace my internal hard drive (2008 macbook) and upgrade to Snow Leopard. Once this is done can I simply restore my old settings, applications, and files using time machine? Would this also include things such as my .profile file?
Also if anyone has any advice on a good replacement hard drive then that would be super. I have the late 2008 aluminium macbook, and need something bigger than the current 230GB. I'm off to do some research now, but it can't hurt to ask here too.

Yes, the Momentus is a good drive.....You shouldn't have any issues with that one...
I myself purchased a Seagate Momentus 5400RPM hard drive and used it for a few months until I got a nice deal on a 128GB Kingston V200 SSD.....
Now I'm enjoying a quick Macbook Uni with 8GB of RAM and SSD upgrade. Planning on giving it to my niece since I have a couple of late 2011 Macbook Pros.

Z61t Doesn't boot after upgrading hard drive

I'm upgrading the hard drive on my girlfriend's Lenovo Z61t laptop and am running in to a strange problem.
The computer will not boot anymore! I cloned the old disk to the new one using acronis true image and when I insert the new disk into the laptop and boot it, after the system prompt there's a blinking dash at the top left corner of the screen.

Drive is detected in the BIOS, PC doctor reports no problem on both the short and extended test... And to top it off, if I insert the driver into my HP laptop windows will start loading as expected

I fixed the issue. I researched many many forums and found no help on any of them, and sorry-no help on this one either.
What solved the issue - and I hope this helps someone else who has the same problem:
1). Install new hard drive (with or without osx pre installed)
2). Remove all ram
3). Power on and wait 1 minute
4). Hold power button until it turns off
5). Install ram
6). Power back on
7). BOOM! It works again.

I own a HP dv7-3085dx (product no : VM188UA#ABA) and I need to upgrade my hard drive to a SSD & upgrade my RAM. currenlty I'm having 500GB hdd & 6144MB DDR3 ram.
1. Please let me know whether Serial ATA III SSD (Samsung - 840 EVO 250GB Internal Serial ATA III Solid State Drive) is compatible with my mother board. And is it possible to use this SSD(primary) together with my old HDD(secondary).
2. Do i need to buy any extra cables for this upgrade?

Your specific motherboard has the Intel 5 series chipset which only is capable of SATA-II. However, the SATA-III Samsung 840 Evo will work just fine and you will still see amazing speeds. You have picked a good SSD (the same one I am using so I am a bit prejudiced).
As for the memory, here is the crucial.com page on your model showing it will take up to 8 gb (2 x 4 gb) of DDR3-1333 SO-DIMM.
