Powermac G4 : Wake up only with Power Button

My Mac used to wake up with just moving my Logitech USB Mouse until the fans went haywire. Now only by pressing the Power button, does the Powermac G4 wake up. Fans have been changed, Hardware test and Memory test have been run, still no change. Any suggestions how to restore the wake-up to previous state. Thanks.

whether using NVRAM or PRAM, the Powermac G4 reverts to Panther on restart. I am told this is normal.
That sounds like a dead or weak PRAM battery. "Normal" is that the computer remembers its startup volume settings. Are you unplugging the computer from wall power? What you see can be a symptom of having a dead PRAM battery combined with pulling the plug out of the wall every night. Turning off a power strip of backup power supply has the same effect.
There are a number of G4 variants and I've not yet seen a mention of which G4 variant you're working on. The later Mirrored Drive Door G4s do better with both drives set to cable select. The older variants retain the older "master/slave" relation for drives. Do "About the Mac..." then click on "More Info..." in the resulting window. Copy/paste the "Hardware Overview" info from the next screen into a post here, deleting your serial number. That screen for my G4, an MDD, looks like this:
Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 1.75 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2
Serial Number: <deleted>
That might help us work througha n model-specific issues.
What kind of keyboard do you have the requires USB 2.0? Most are slow devices and more than hapy on a USB 1.1 port.

  • How to wake from sleep only with power button

    Hi,
I still use this old PowerMac G4 (hopefully Apple builds a new MacPro soon!) and when not using it, it is  in sleep mode.
Unfortunately my cats like to touch the keyboard, thus waking up my Mac.
Is it possible to wake the mac only by pressing the power button?
    If so, how?
    regards
    kpgkpg

The USB bus is unique from other buses in that it always has power present to it.
Because of this, it can be used to sense activity at a keyboard or other input device to facilitate wake from sleep.
The power button also always has power present, with the main purpose of on and off being extended to options for sleep and wake. This is possible due to the use of a momentary contact switch, with fuction that can be interpreted (time held) for various purposes via software.
why the action on the USB bus has to be a keyboard inpput, but not a mouse click. strange.
Mouse click should also wake the machine if the mouse is USB. If Bluetooth, an option must be selected in the software, and then not all mice are equal.
If wireless, then, again, not all are equal. Some will wake a machine, others won't.

  • Grey screen with message "turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button"

    Dear all,
I'm very hungry with my iMac and my Time Capsule :
I try for two weeks to restore my iMac without any success...
I wait 80 hours to finally have the message again and again : "to restart your computer : turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button".
But my iMac do not work !
    Could you help me?

    Hello, that's a kernel panic...
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • My HP Compaq powers on only when force i plug in. Doesn't turn on with power button!

I have a HP Compaq 6710b.. Its Over 6 yrs old..
The Issue is really annoying.. The laptop powers on only when i force plug in the charger pin and the laptop works fine after that..
But the laptop never turns on when i try to power on by pushing the power button!!
I couldn't understand the reason why...
Any thoughts about this issue?  HELP!!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

There are no settings in the BIOS that affect the use of the power button.
The power button works at the hardware (firmware) level.
Pressing the button is  translated into action for the system board by logic conditions.  There must be voltage at specific points in the power circuit. If the voltages are not present, then the power button will not operate. This could be caused by a failed resistor, mlcc capacitor or a faulty solder joint, if the power button has been tested and shown to be working normally. Even lint could cause this to happen. This can troubleshot by visual inspection and use of a multimeter.
    Hi all,
This may be a solution for others but unfortunately not me..
My whole Power Circuit has been replaced with brand new circuit by authorised service personal in my country (will not HP, but he is an authorised service dealer of HP)..  It was replaced/repaired a year ago and after that i hardly would have used the power button..  I also use the sleep mode and mouse to wake up.. (would have used power button not more than 20 times in one year. And especially during update shutdowns)..
So its better i will check with BIOS/CMOS setting and battery and get back soon..  Why i am mentioning this is because, for the past 8 months, when even i remove the battery and put back in and start up the lappy, the date goes back to 1980..  I guess this happens because of faulty/dead CMOS battery..  Because i had a similar problem with my Desktop too and when i replaced the CMOS battery, the date problem on my desktop vanished..  (Surprisingly, even some Digital cameras hav this issue too!!)..
    Regards,

  • I HAVE I PROBLEM WITH POWER BUTTON

HI.......I had a problem with the power button, with less than 6 months of use, I had to warranty apple here in Brazil, to my surprise they said I would have to refer to the country that I bought in the USA ... and that guarantee that it was said that international.
    very frustrating

Your iPhone warranty/support is only valid in the US. Thus, to obtain any service you will have to physically return the phone to the US...you can't mail it directly to Apple. You can send it to a friend/relative, in the US, and they can take it to Apple for you.
You will not receice any authorized service, in Russia, for this phone.

  • Problem with power button

hi, I bought my iphone 5 last year in November. It seem to have some problem with its power button cause it doesn't work when i press it. Its still under warranty but the problem is im not anymore in the country i purchased it from which was UK and now im in Pakistan. Any help as to what my options are now?

Apple doesn't do such repairs only.
The iPhone would be exchanged under warranty by Apple only and that is your ONLY option if you don't want to pay for a 3rd party there to try to repair it.
An iPhone purchased in a EU country can be exchanged under warranty in any other EU country.

  • MacBook Pro won't turn on without pressing 'ctrl' & 'cmd' with power button

As title says. I have no idea why. When I press the power button nothing happens at all - no lights, no fans no video. Pressing the ctrl & cmd buttons at start-up is the only way it will turn on. It's a 2008 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.6.8.
If it's useful at all, after much to-ing and fro-ing I managed to get Apple to replace the logic board in Oct 2012 (free) under the Nvidia programme. So I'm hoping that it's not the logic board again as there's no way I could afford (nor would it be econmical) to have it replaced.
Anybody have any ideas on what the problem could be and how I might be able to rectify it?
    Thanks in advance

  • Yet another Nano 6th Gen with power button failure

When is apple going to put its hand up and admit there is a problem with the 6th Gen Nano. My daughters 13 month old 16gig  ipod has a power button failure the same as so many others. At £120 odd its already an expensive bit of kit without having to purchase an extended warranty. Pay another £50 for a repair and another years use? I dont think so.
I notice the sales pitch  boasts the new ipod has been "completely renanoed"  Come on Apple why dont you look after the little people and give us a decent trade in on these faulty year old ipods against a new sorted one? Patrick

Well a robust defence of your product Apple well done!

  • When watching a streamed movie, Firefox works briefly, stops, buffers, and then prevents any further action on my Mac, which I must turn off with power button.

A streamed movie will run smoothly for maybe 5 minutes. Then it will begin to buffer. The multicolored icon turns and turns and nothing happens. I try to go back to browsing but cannot. I try to close netflix but cannot. I try to close Firefox but cannot. Everything is basically frozen and the only way I can turn off my Mac is to press the power button.

Have you tried anything on this page?

  • Problems with power button HP dv5

    Hello,
I have a HP Pavilion DV5 that warranty was over.
The main problem of this notebook is the power button ( I think ). When I click it, it blinks once the power led ( white color ) and the nothing happens. No screen image, no fan movement. Nothing.
I opened it and I noticed that the link from power button to the motherboard was not in very good status.
So I decided to try with another link cable from another broken laptop. The same thing happens.
Now I'm kinda stuck because I cant start my own laptop. There's any suggestion?
There's a way to "direct turn on" without the power button?
    Any help is apreciated.
PS. Sorry for my bad english.

Same problem I had,I removed the damaged white ribbon connector, taped the ribbon wires over the wires from  the     board,so that the end of the ribbon was over the leads, then, tacky as it sounds I cut about a 1/2inch of a cigarette filter and taped  it over the area where the leads need to make contact . installed keyboard with its screws to hold down the cig filter tight over the taped down leads. quick fix that workes without soldering on another connection

  • Options with Power Button

I was wondering if there was a setting to be able to choose power settings (shut down, restart, etc) when you press the power button on the back, like on an ibook, instead of just putting it to sleep.
    Thnaks in advance

'Systems preferences' - 'Energy saver' 'Options' then the option 'allow power button to sleep this computer' Is the only one I know of.
    Keyboard wise -->
'Control-Eject' = Restart, Sleep, Shutdown dialog box
'Control-Command-Eject' = Quit all applications and restart
    'Option-Command-Eject' = Sleep
