PowerMac G4 Will not boot

My Mac G4 at work will not boot. When it tries to boot up, all I can see is a grey screen with a flashing folder icon. I've tried to use the command-option-p-r key combo to re-start the machine, no luck. I know they shut the power down last night, but im positive that the computer was off. TIA

  • PowerMac G5 will not boot up

    Hello all -
I have a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3GHz (early 2005) that has recently started to have issues. It froze a few times in the last week, and then would not boot up again. I dug out the original install disks, and was able to boot and run the Apple Hardware Test. The hardware test revealed a stick of RAM that was giving errors, so I removed the bad memory and it's mate (since they are required to be installed in pairs). Everything was great for a few hours, and then it froze up again. Had to hold the power button to force it to shut down. Once again it would not boot up - either a black screen, or stuck on the gray screen with the Apple Logo on it. Again was able to boot to Hardware Test from the install disk, and ran the Test again. This time it came back with no errors or problems. Ran it several times, all without any errors. I have reset the PMU, unplugged the power cord for several minutes, swapped memory around to different slots, unplugged everything but the monitor, keyboard and mouse, .... all to no avail. The computer will not start up. I tried to use the CD as a boot disk, but it hangs the same as when trying to boot from the hard drive. The only thing it will do is boot into Hardware Test mode (from the install disk), or Firewire Target Disk Mode (fortunately, since I can at least access my data and make some backups).
This computer has been very reliable up to now, and this all came on quite suddenly.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Ok, so this has now advanced to the point of being a bit ridiculous.
The nearest Apple store is 45 miles away, but I happened to be in the area over the weekend, so I brought along my G5 for a visit to the Genius Bar. A resident Apple genius hooks it up, powers on, and lo and behold, it boots. What? How is that possible? I have been unable to get past the gray screen for weeks. He mentions that sometimes if you unplug everything, it will help to reset the power management, etc. So I tried to remember, did I leave the keyboard plugged in while it sat in the corner? Dunno, but it certainly booted fine in the store. He then ran the proprietary Apple Diagnostics (very low level testing, much more thorough than the Apple Hardware Test we consumers have access to). Took 30-45 minutes. Came back without so much as a hiccup. Everything checked out perfectly. He could not reproduce any problems at all. Hmm. Well, ok, awesome. It's all good to go!
So, I get home, hook everything back up, and it runs fine. My wife is happy that she has her computer back. It runs for a day or so. Then it locks at the login screen while trying to wake from sleep. The fans ramp up to full speed. Have to hold the power button to shut it down. Restart, everything's fine again... for a few hours. Next morning it is frozen again, and will not progress beyond the gray logo screen. Never gets to the spinning gear. I unhook everything again, wait an hour, and try to boot again. Get a kernel panic. Force restart again, and now is stuck at the gray screen again.
So..... What in the world is going on? All of the hardware has passed Apple's low level testing with no problems, yet it no longer functions. I have a feeling that if I leave it for a week, I will get a few hours use out of it, then it will freeze again.
This is all very frustrating. Anyone interested in a used G5 tower with intermittent issues?

  • Powermac G4 will not boot Tiger

    Short story...
    PowerMac G4 867 quicksilver
    512mb ram
    Plenty of HD space
Been using OS 9 without problems
    Received Tiger retail disk
    Installed without problem
Rebooted and see only gray screen, Not permitted sign, and loading circle
    Will not proceed
    Details...
I bought the tower used in May 2008, zero all data and installed 9.2. It was factory except two generic sticks of ram. I installed an internal ATA as a backup disk. Been using it without problems.
I received a Tiger retail disk. So I went online and downloaded two possible firmware updates. They both said they were not needed. So I installed Tiger. Installation went smoothly. It rebooted and all I got was the not permitted sign and it never booted.
    Troubleshooting I already did...
    1. Booted off tiger disk and opened disk utilities.
    2. Repaired permissions.
    3. Scan disk = OK
    4. Rebooted = failed
    5. Shutdown and removed all PCI cards/addons
    6. Removed two sticks of generic RAM and put in 512mb crucial RAM
    7. Reinstalled Tiger = archive and install
    8. Rebooted = failed
    9. Hold option = OK
    10. Hold shift (safe mode) = failed
    11. Checked disk is Mac OS extended journaled
    12. Boot into OS 9 = OK
The only things that are not factory in this QS is the optical drive, second HDD, and ram. Both the optical drive (DVD-ROM) and RAM were pulled from a G4 that had Tiger on it and the second HDD should not have an impact I wouldn't think.
This machine simply refuses to boot Tiger. Help.

IT WORKED! You were right about the HD BDAuqua. I removed it and Tiger booted perfectly. I am typing on it right now.
    Regarding the HDD...
It was a pull from my mother in laws old Dell tower.
It is a Seagate Ultra ATA 15GB.
    Jumper is set to slave.
I put it in the G4 and zero all data/reformatted it as Mac OS extended using my OS 9 disk and it worked just fine as a backup disk. I was under the assumtion that any HDD can be used in a Mac as long as it is the right type and it is erased and reformatted right. I wonder if OS 9 and OS X reformat differently?
As a side note, I had another problem with this machine that is now also fixed with OS X. I had asked but never received an answer. This machine is using an Apple studio display with an ADC. The only resolution it would let me get is 1280x1024. Now with Tiger I can get all the choices. Apparently OS 9 was too old. I love my Macs!
    Thanks again guys,
    Nathan

  • Powermac G4 will not boot from CD with OS10 install BUT will boot with OS 9

I have a Powermac G4 which had been running OS 10.38 or 39. The system on start up would sound the tones, the grey screen with Apple logo displays and the rotating clock at the bottom of the screen ultimately freezes and nothing more happens.
I presume that the hard drive is either smoked or corrupted so I buy a replacement drive and Tiger, and go through the following steps:
I disconnect the old drive and try to boot my g4 with Tiger install disks. The start up freezes in the same way as with old disk.
I find my old Panther install disks and the system freezes in the same way.
I then use my 9.2 install disk and the system boots and I get cannot see my new drive.
I disconnect my new drive, reconnect my old drive and re-boot with 9.2 and find my old drive mounts. Big Smile but...
    here is the question:
Since I apparently have a still functional drive, why won't my install CD for Panther or DVD for Tiger not boot this system???? I do have a panasonic DVD/CD writer which is aftermarket if that might be the issue. If so would re-installing the apple CD player make a difference?
(I have also zapped the PRAM)
I am on the way out to try and find a copy of disk warrior to try and salvage my old drive. All help would be appreciated.
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I had a really weird problem that might be something like you're experiencing. I was trying to get Tiger onto a "Yikes" PCI G4, and it would not boot up with the Tiger disk.I did everything I could come up with, and no luck. I spent a good bit of time here and over at macosx.com, and no one could figure it out. I finally just re-installed 10.2.8 on a partition, and for some unknown reason, the computer booted with the Tiger disk, and I was able to install. I let the people on the boards know it, but didn't go back to tell them what happened the next day. When I tried to restart, it would only boot into OS9. If I tried to force Tiger (like by choosing it as start-up) it would go to a black screen. Anyway, it ended up no go. If you'd like to go through all the things I did, here's the link to that thread:
    http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/272035-cant-install-tiger- g4-pci-yikes.html
I would still like to know if there's some reason some "Yikes" models just can't deal with Tiger.

  • Powermac g5 will not boot---hard disk appears not to mount

    tried resetting smu, nvram
tried disk util---does not see drive(orig. 160 gb)
    tried new disk---not recognized either
    boots to OF ok
i'm running out of patience and have no money to take it to apple
    would greatly appreciate any input/advice--thanks

    Dear Fryan,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The HDD is not mounting and there could be lot of reasons for this malfunction.
What you can try is :
1.Open the unit and reseat the HDD cable.
    2.Re-pair the RAM .(re-arrange)
    3.Do PMU/SMU reset.
4.Try to boot holding the "option" key. You will see the HDD icon if you do not see the HDD icon that means the boot rom is failing to rcognize your HDD. This could be a Logic Board faliure or a HDD faliure (but lets not assume things so fast
If you do see the HDD icon then click on it and then click on the right arrow.
5.If the previous step fail try to boot to the install disk holding the c key or the same procedure usin option key.
6.If it is able to boot to install disk thank god that your logic board is safe.
7.Your install disk has an Apple Hardware Test included you will have to boot it holding the option key and choose AHT to boot to AHT and run the test.
    (Addtional testing steps)
1.IF you happen to have another MAc then you can connect the affectd Mac to a known good Mac via firewire cable and boot the affected mac with the HDD of the good MAc by holding the option key and starting the good mac with T key.
Also you can do the reverse step to chekc the HDD of the Affected mac. This procedure is called target disk mode.
Tell me how far you are able to go.
    Hopw this helps.
    Good Day!
    Ravi Dimri.

  • Powermac G5 will not boot after 10.5.6 install

    I recently inherited a Powermac G5 with 8gb ram(recognizes 6) 2x150gb HD which was at 10.5.8
HD1 was 10.5.8 HD2 is setup as backup
most apps would not launch so decided to refresh and start over by erasing and installing anew 10.5.6 and going from there.
after install on HD1 and reboot the screen would hang at the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning circle
did option boot and selected that drive and system would barely get to the gray screen and shut down
installed on HD2 and again it gets to gray logo screen and just spins(let it go for many minutes)
    any ideas?

    Hello Dane,
I think we should start by finding out why only 6 GB is recognized out of 8 GB, if we have a RAM problem then we're not likely to get a good Install.
Maybe try one Pair of RAM sticks at a time.
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

We're interested mostly if it finds errors.

  • 400mhz Powermac G4 will not boot...entirely

OK, so I picked up a 733mhz Digi Audio for $125, untested and as-is. It will boot initially...but then turns itself off after 5-10 seconds. I reset the PMU...no luck. Replaced the PMU battery with another one (although I'm not sure whether or not the one I replaced it with is good). Still no luck. I'm going to go pick up a new battery, but in the mean time...anything else I should look for?
I was able to get it to boot to the flashing question mark folder a few times. (the HDD is wiped so that behavior is expected.) However, I could NOT get it to boot to CD/DVD. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark
    733mhz G4 Digital Audio

Marky, which OS are you trying to boot to, which CD, when you say 10 seconds after booting is this 10 seconds after a full start up. It sounds like it is searching for the System Folder. Can you get to Disc Utilities for the start up CD. When you say the HD is wiped, what exactly is wiped, did you initialize it.

  • Comatose PowerMac G5 (Will Not Boot)

Woke up this morning and started up my mac. Saw my desktop and popped a message saying it must be restarted. After pressing the power button to restart, nothing! I hear the chime, but nothing else happens. Blank monitor, dead keyboard and mouse, dead internal drives. If I leave it on for more than a few minutes, it starts getting hot and the fans start blowing like no tomorrow. AppleCare is long gone and no Mac repair shops within 100 miles. Any ideas?
    Thanks for any input.

Hello! I am having a very similar problem with our G5 here at work. Dual G5 with a flat Apple monitor that has the keyboard and mouse hooked up to the monitor and the monitor goes to a split that goes to the monitor input, 1 Firewire and 1 USB. I'm not sure if this is relavent but mentioing it. I'm a Mac user but I don't use this computer; I just happen to be one of the only 'Mac guys' in the building.
Aside from identical symptoms there are two other things not mentioned in the original post that occur in our computer:
    1) there is a red LED light that is now on on the motherboard. Not the LED that comes on when removing the cover but it appears to be on the motherboard right behind the upper of the two processors. It definitely wasn't there during normal operation.
2)The optical drive won't even open. I try holding the eject while powering up but it won't open.
I tried the PMU; no joy. Is this something that will have to go to a Mac Store or some kinf of tech?
Thanks for any further advice anyone can offer.

  • PowerMac G5 will not boot into Open Firmware, or Boot Manager

I have a PowerMac G5 and it refuses to boot into Open Firmware. I used Command + Option + O + F and held down the Option key. I have tried 3 different Keyboards but no avail.

    Hmmm,
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).

Does it boot from your Install Disc, or show boot choices  when holding alt at bootup?

  • PowerMac Will NOT Boot up

Last night my PowerMac G5 seemed like it was hung up. I had to shut it off to get it to do anything. It hasn't booted since. I went through all the diagnostic BS, verified the disk, checked the permissions, booted in verbose mode and it end up hanging when it gets to something that said something about CiscoVPN. I have Cisco VPN software loaded on the box. I have used it for months so I'm not sure why all of a sudden it is a problem. So, i brought the PC to the Apple store. Genius could not get it to boot or start in Safe mode either. TOld me to try the Archive and Install. I brought it home and did that. Now it boots but I get no icons or toolbar. I get part of the spotlight toolbar in the upper right. It is about 1/2" long. Nothing happens. Does the same thing if I start in safe mode.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? I am getting a little upset with my Mac. Not sure why this machine will not boot. Don't want to lug it to the Apple store again.

Well, I can't say for sure what's wrong. What I would do if it were mine...
Swap out memory chips if you can. If you have four, take out two and see what happens. If it works, one (or maybe even both, but probably not both) of the chips you took out is bad. If it doesn't work, swap out the others. If you only have two, try them in different slots.
If you have an external firewire HD that can boot your Mac, install an OS on that and see what happens. If it works, you're probably looking and a bad HD.
Since there are a lot of other components that could also have failed, there's no telling what exactly it is, but memory and HD's are the most common causes of pain.
You mentioned doing the standard troubleshooting BS - if you haven't pressed the PMU reset button or booted into open firmware mode and doing a reset, make sure you add those to the standard troubleshooting BS bag-O-tricks.
If none of the above work, I'd try backing up my important data, erasing the HD and doing a fresh install.
    Good luck,
    Jeff

  • Powermac G5 light go's on will not boot up,fan turns on

My powermac G5 DUAL 2.3GHZ PROCESSOR will not boot up light turns on then fan turns on. I replaced the battery cr2032 and it still does not work. Please help solve my problem. Thank you again in advance. The apple support communities is the best.

Do you get a boot tone (chime) when you power up?
If it does, try a safe boot by powering with the shift key held down.
If it doesn't, you have a fundamental problem to deal with.  Are any LEDs on the logic board illuminated after you power up?
If so, this might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2652

  • PowerMac G4 Dual Optical - will not boot & no display

    PowerMac G4 Dual Optical - Model Number 8570 EMC No 1914 : 1.25GHz DP/256M DDR@ 333/80G/Combo/MDM Operating system OS X 1st or 2nd release
This machine was used daily until February 2007. From then till the last week of September 2009 the machine was in storage and was not powered up
When tried for the first time in over 2 years, the machine powered up and the main switch on the front of the computer came on but no audible chime was heard. The machine will not boot & no display (apart from grey screen visible).
The 3.6 v lithium battery was replaced. PRAM & NVRAM has been reset via the keyboard commands : CommandOption+PR keys. After this, the chimes would work on power up but nothing is visible on screen. Also although the keyboard is functional evidenced by the success of the PRAM reset commands, the num & caps lock lights will not work nor will the CD drive "arrow" eject button. I have also removed the battery, reset the PMU on the logic board, and left the machine for over 30 minutes before powering up again:
Please advise if there is anything else I can try before I take it to a dealer for repair ?
    Many thanks
    Mike

    Try a PMU reset.

  • My powermac dual g5 will not boot up and/or wake up from being asleep

My power mac will not boot up. I hit the power button and it mades the first sound but not the boot sound. My keyboard will not light up or turn on. I replaced the pram battery I hought that might help. It didn't. I am not sure hot to open the disc drive w/o the keyboard working. I am not sure what to do next. I did not hear any clicking from the hard drive. I hope my hard hasn't died. I am running  os 10.4.9  Thanks!

If you can get an external 3,5" HDD enclosure, I'd take out the disk(s) that are not backed up, and back them up first on another computer. (You actually should have had bootable backups in the first place, but it's never too late to learn, you learn the hard way ;-)
I could be wrong but I still have a strong feeling that it's a PSU problem.
Good news: if your fans still work, the PSU is not blown (yet). I suspect that dust could cause the symptoms you're seeing.
You have access to an air compressor? Preferably one that has a moist filter. (Canned air is way too expensive, but an option if you don't know anybody with a decent air compressor. Pressure of a can is lower too)
I'd first try to blow it out without disassembly. The PSU is on the bottom, so blow through the frontgrid at the bottom.
You won't be able to get all the dust out, but it might work allready.
I recommend you do this outside, and be surprised by the huge dustcloud that comes out, and be glad you didn't do it in your house.
If that didn't work, I would disassemble your G5, take the PSU out, blow it out more thoroughly, by opening the case of the PSU.
You will find links to guides how to do this in the thread I mentioned in my previous post.

  • G4 powermac will not boot up nomally unless i boot up in safe mode help ?

My G4 power mac will not boot up when switched on itakes several re boots and somtimes crashes.
Will boot up in safe mode. but this only allows me to use some of the application software i need and not all of them.
Can anyone help I thought it could be the hardisk but why would it boot up in safe mode?

Boot from the Tiger installation disc 1 (hold down 'C' on startup). Don't touch the installer, go to the menu bar and select Disk Utility (I think it's in the Tools menu on Tiger).
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.). Run Repair Disk.
If problems are reported, run it again until the green message says the disc seems to be OK.
Quit DU, quit the installer and restart.
If DU says there are problems it can't fix, you may need DiskWarrior.
Either way, let us know the results please.

Hi! Run the hardware test that came with your computer to see if it boots. You could have a dead hard drive. You might also try booting from the OSX install disc with the hard drive unhooked. This would give you an idea if the hardware is ok. Tom
