  • PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz Dual (Buy April 2005) Graphics Cards?

I want to buy a new graphics card for my PowerMac 1.8 Dual GHz which a got in April of 2005. I have not made any improvments to the hardware at all. All I do know is that the Nvidia 6600 Upgrade on Apple.com will not fit into my computer slots. If someone can tell me out of this list, the ones that will fit into my computer. Thanks
One of the following graphics cards:
ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
ATI Radeon 9800 XT or 9800 Pro
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL
    NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500
    PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   I don't know if I have PCI or PCI-X or PCI-Express ports.

    Happy New Year!!!
Would you say ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is better than Nvidia 6800, in terms of both performance and price?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Powermac G5 2.0 GHz dual wi-fi signal problems

i was gifted a Powermac G5 2.0 GHz dual and my wi-fi signal has been intermittent at best despite my router being 10 feet away, and getting full signal on my macbook.
I then found out that it is supposed to have an external antennae for this, and also one for bluetooth (which I don't have)
Can anyone reccomend a good USB 2-1 bluetooth/wi-fi adapter that will solve this dilemma (and my lagging magic mouse) that is compatible with my system running 10.5.8, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

  • Is an Intel iMac faster than PowerMac G4 1.25 Ghz single proccesor?

Hi, I'm owner of a PowerMac G4 1.25 Ghz single proccesor, working whit Adobe Creative Suite 1. I'm wonderin if the iMac Intel Core Duo is faster than my PowerMac G4? Thanks for your support.

I have a 1.25 G4 Mac Mini and the new intel Mac. The answer to your question is that the iMac will be loads faster for anything that is a native Universal Binary like iLife programs. It will also be faster for games that are not the latest thing, but that are accelerated by its fairly beefy 3d card - so faster for Halo, Call of Duty - Unreal Tournamaent1 etc. (other Unreal tournaments not good under Rosetta - but 2004 now has a UB so that should whizz when you download the patch, if you are into such things).
However it will be slower for power applications running under Rosetta - ie: Photoshop or Dreamweaver. Until the Universal Binary versions come - then it will be much faster for those too.

  • Is the airport extreme card incompatible with my powermac G5 dual 2 GHz?

I have installed an airport extreme card into my powermac G5 dual 2 GHz. It will only detect my router if it's in the same room and even then it has a very weak signal. Any suggestions?

You need both for it to work, but don't you have the card already?

  • Mac OS X Leopard on a PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz Dual Processor

I have a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8 GHz on which I installed Leopard as an upgrade once v.10.5.1 was released. After the installation, I noticed intermittent problems of applications freezing on launch, abruptly quitting, and having to be force-quit to close. Some applications, especially Word and Quicken, sometimes give strange messages, such as being unable to find templates or unable to save memorized transactions or copies of a file. When these issues occur, rebooting the G5 makes them go away for a while. About a month after the initial installation, I did an archive and install of Leopard, but the same issues continue. Have any other G5 owners experienced these issues? If so, how were they resolved?

Regardless of OS, my dual 1.8 gave me problems right out of the box - kernel panics, freezes, force restart messages upon waking, and creeping corruption. I have had to wipe and reinstall roughly every 6-9 months. I am also aware of 2 other identical machines with the same issues - one where I used to work (the same issues were ongoing before I was ever hired). The contracted Apple service rep mentioned another identical unit with the same problems.
I had it in for service when warranty was still in effect and three more times since, all with the same issues. Apple replaced the RAM, the motherboard, then the processors, then the power supply - and still the problem persists. They had forgotten to reserialize the replacement motherboard, and I discovered that this was a used and recertified part. As far as I am concerned, they simply replaced one funky motherboard with another.
Interesting note - the last service guy told me that he was aware of "around 100 dual 1.8s with similar problems.
Apple should have replaced the entire machine, but they refused to do so, even with the issue being reported while under warranty and despite four service visits. I've owned 15 Macs so far. This is the only dog, but it is mangy as **** and always has been.

  • Mini DVDs okay in PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz Dual Processor desktop?

I'm considering purchasing a camcorder that uses mini DVDs. Will these work in my PowerMac G5?

Mini DVDs are OK in any computer that has a tray-loading drive, but usually aren't for machines with a slot-loading drive.

  • PowerMac G5 1.6 ghz upgrade for music studio

    Hello!
I have recently acquired a friend's old Powermac G5 1.6ghz and am hoping to bring it up to speed, as this computer is now almost 8 years old. Still runs fine... miraculous. This will be a new tool for my remedial recording studio, and as such, I don't want to spend too much to get this thing into shape.
First step, I do now this much, is to upgrade memory. The machine is currently running two 512mb, and has two empty slots to fill. I was thinking two 1gb ram cards would do just fine, bringing the total to 3gb, which is plenty for my needs.
So first questions...do apple computers require a certain memory card?
Is there any reason I should spend more for this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/2700DDR2GBP/, as opposed to this http://cgi.ebay.com/PC2700-1GB-DDR-SDRAM-1-GB-PC-

    Is there a distinction?
Second. The computer is currently running on OSX 10.4.11. A software upgrade is in order once I get the thing connected to the internet, BUT, is there a good reason to upgrade to OSX 10.5? I am currently typing on a Powerbook G4 running 10.5, and it works great, but I'm wondering if there's any reason to run an older machine with an OS, or if it even makes a difference.
That is it for now. I do appreciate the help, I know these may be elementary questions, but I got to start somewhere.
    Thank you!
    Best, K

Hi K, how did you start this topiv... seems to run off mt 1280 wide screen!?
No telling on the RAM other than the OWC will work, many generic/PC modules will not work in Macs if High Density or aren't all that great on JDEC compliance.
I was thinking two 1gb ram cards would do just fine, bringing the total to 3gb, which is plenty for my needs.
But not for OSX's needs, especially if going to 10.5.
BUT, is there a good reason to upgrade to OSX 10.5?
Catch 22, 10.5 seems to use multiple CPUs better than 10.4, but requires twice the Disk Space, twice the RAM to mention just a few.
If Security is an issue, then 10.5 is the choice,

  • Upgrade Powermac Dual 2.0 GHz G5(2004) or buy MacMini using Lightroom

I have a Power Mac Dual 2.0 GHz G5(June 2004) with 8 slots for RAM (4 GB installed) and a GeForce FX 5200 64 mb AGP video card. I also just installed a new 500 GB 7200 rpm harddrive to help. The G5 has been a work horse for me for many years. I hope upgrading my G5 is a viable option vs buying new.
I am a photographer and use Lightroom for all of my RAW photo processing. The problem I am having with Lightroom, on my G5, is after I import the Nikon Raw images into Lightroom, as I click on an image to edit in the develop module, I have to wait for 5-10 sec for the image to load before I can began editing. This is very time consuming for editing 300-400 images at a time. My MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz performs this without any problems and quickly. Will more RAM or a new video card help my G5? Apple store person told me 4 GB of RAM is plenty. Do I need a 128 mb or 256 mb video card? Maybe I should try a MAc Mini to hold me for a year. I plan on purchasing a 24" IMAC in 1-2 years. Thanks in advance for your time.

I still think save and consider the next revision to the iMac line rather than throw more at your G5.
SATA drives that you can use now and in the future are likely to be safe investments.
People have used 3 x 10K VelociRaptors, along with cheaper but still fast WD Caviar 640GB as a great way to improve performance. SSDs are fast but probably for 1st gen G5 would require a PCI-X controller.

  • Core duo 1.83 improvement over PowerMac G5 2.0 GHz

My PowerMac G5 2.0 logic board died (out of warranty). It's been a work horse for video work. I can't afford a MacPro, and I'm wondering what the experience will be like using a new minicore duo 1.83 to my PowerMac? I realize that my 7200 SATA drives would out perform the mini's 5400 drive. If the memory is equal (RAM 2GB, and HD space). The video cards look similar., would it be a major step back in performance?
I'm also wondering if my Apple 20" display (ADC cable) is compatible with the new mini's. I've read elsewhere that there has been problems with this display on older mini's.

I have a dual 2.0 G5 and recently played with a Core Duo 1.83 mini to see what the differences are, specifically in video editing.
The results surprised me. The mini's performance was excellent - not quite on a par with the G5 when scrubbing and rendering, but close. I have to say that there were times when the slower drive of the mini was a noticeable performance limitation, though not so much in terms of the ability to handle the volume and speed of video data, but because it seemed markedly slower when paging. For that reason, 2Gb RAM would be beneficial I think.
I tried a 7200rpm external on the mini for saving projects, but in itself that made little difference, but used as a boot drive, it gave the mini somewhat better speed and general responsiveness.
The real differences between the two in actual use during video project development was that where the G5 was generally immediately responsive, the mini suffered very, very slight lag that was barely noticeable, except when selecting some objects such as the scrubber or in graphically rich activities such as dropping a title into the timeline where clips then spread apart. It did not impact in any apparent way on workflow however, and was likely only apparent because I was looking for differences.
I came to the conclusion that if I were forced to replace my G5 with a Core Duo mini, I would not be greatly disappointed in anything but the ability to run dual displays.
ON EDIT: I should add that the comparison was done mainly with iMovie 6 (universal binary). Final Cut (both Pro and Express in universal binary) seem less demanding on the hardware and ran more smoothly on both systems. Non-native copies of Final Cut Pro 4 and Express 2 ran poorly on the mini under Rosetta, while of course running perfectly well on the G5. The moral would be to ensure that you have intel native software - no problem if buying a new Core Duo and intending to use iMovie.

  • Where do I find mounting screws for a PowerMac G5 1.6 Ghz optical drive?

I bought a used PowerMac G5 without the optical drive. I have a drive to install but I need the screws to mount the drive in the drive bay properly. I'm sure that somebody makes these and I don't have any idea of where to look. I think they are ISO threaded screws (metric) but I'm not sure if a 'normal' PV repair shop would have them. The nearest Apple repair center is in Bloomington, IN, where I bought this great new, to me, machine. They didn't have any hardware to mount the drive. Thanks for any help in this matter.

The hex head screws are M3x3.
    For "non-Sony" drives:

Both Phillips and Hex on eBay:

Phillips head are for Sony drives, Hex is for most others.

  • How do I connect dual PC monitors to my Powermac G5 1.8 GHz?

I have 2 hp L2335 HD monitors I want to use together. They are both DVI monitors, however my G5 has an ADC and DVI plug for it's monitor inputs. The DVI input works fine but when I bought a universal ADC to DVI adapter from Belkin the monitor does not work. The computer recognizes that there is a monitor hooked up (it see it in the prefs display and my mouse can scroll off the screen) but the monitor with the adpater remains black. The monitor also displays an error "No Input Signal" and goes to sleep. It will also say check video connection. My video card is the GeForce FX 5200 Ultra.
    What do you think?

Did you try to hook up both monitors to the Belkin adaptor? Trying will determine if your monitor has a bad input port. See if the Belkin adaptor is the problem. I have never used that specific adaptor, but I have always had luck with the Dr. Bott's DVI for ADC adaptor. Best of luck.

  • PowerMac DP 2 Ghz vs 15" Powerbook & Aperture vs Bridge-ACR and 10 D2X nefs

10 D2X nefs, equal settings(including sharpening) on each file.
Test: Time the export/saving 10 full sized JPGs(level 10) on both systems under both Aperture and Bridge/ACR
In Aperture, stamp the same settings to 10 nefs, wait for the changes to appear on each thumbnail, then select the 10 nefs, and select export versions.
In Bridge, paste the camera raw settings to the 10 nefs, wait for the thumbnails to show changes(building cache), select the 10 nefs, open ACR under Bridge(not CS2) by pressing CMD-R, in the ACR dialog, select all images on the left, click "Save 10 images".
PowerMac: G5 dual 2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, X 800 XT vid card, Aperture library and Bridge cache on separte SATA 7200 RPM internal disk
PowerBook: 15" 1.5 Ghz, 1.5 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, and 80 GB disk
    Aperture results:
    PowerMac: 2:07
    PowerBook: 5:06
    Bridge/ACR results:
    PowerMac: 1:18
    PowerBook: 2:12
As you can see Aperture requires 2x the time to export/save when compared to Bridge/ACR.
Further, it is amazing that the Powerbook could plow through the images in Bridge in the same time it took the Powermac to export the Aperture images...
Hmmm, then that would imply the best money is on a Powerbook running Bridge/ACR/CS2?
Sooooo, if you can cull/sort the images and apply raw settings in Aperture three to four times as fast as in Bridge then it is a wash...

From what I remember I have also had this issue when Skype wasn't open.
Yesterday my computer started up beeping - I took the harddisk out and it started normally (initramfs tho). Then I put it back in and the laptop have been running fine so far. I suspect it might just have been a bad connection, but I am giving it time..
    EDIT: Still experiencing the issue..

  • Mac Mini Dual Core vs PowerMac DP G4

I am considering purchasing a Mac Mini Dual Core to replace my PowerMac DP 1.25Ghz G4 . I'm worried whether I will be happy , and if it will be faster than my G4. The app's I run most are univeral binary or will be soon , so I'm thinking , yes. But I would feel more comfortable if I could get some solid input from some power Mac user's experienced or knowledgeable with the new Mac Mini
PowerMac DP 1.25 Ghz , 1.5GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Dual 80GB Seagate Barracuda drives

I can't imagine that an Intel Mac mini would ever be "faster" than a dual-processor G4 tower for most operations. The comparisons that Apple advertises, like "4X faster" are all against single-processor PowerPC Macs. Mac OS X does a good job at managing dual PowerPC processors.
Although the new Intel Mac mini now has a faster system bus, you're MUCH more limited by the use of portable-size hard drives (for example, your PowerMac probably has over a 100GB drive to start with and could have 500GB without much cost). If you want to max-out the RAM on the new Intel Mac mini to 2GB, it will cost you $300 more. So, a 1.66GHz Core Duo Mac mini with a 120GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM is $1,224.00 (US). If I were you, I would, without question, keep the PowerMac and invest in a newer Super Drive and/or hard drive(s) before giving it up.

  • Can't connect MacBook to PowerMac over Airport network

PowerMac G4 DP 1 GHZ, Mac OSX 10.5.8
MacBook Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, Mac OSX 10.6.2
When I try to "Connect As", nothing happens. Oddly, I can share the screen of my PowerMac on my MacBook with no trouble. I have File Sharing active on both. This only happened when I updated to Snow Leopard on my MacBook. Unfortunately, my aging G4 PowerMac won't support Snow Leopard.

Interestingly (or maybe not so interestingly) I have no trouble using my PowerMac G4 to connect to the MacBook. It's just a one-way issue with Snow Leopard not making contact with old Leopard. To further check the connection between the two computers, I changed the name of my PowerMac in it's Sharing Preferences and the new name immediately appeared on the side panel of a Finder window on the MacBook.
I use the PowerMac as a central filing system so this connectivity has always been a huge convenience for me. Am I stuck hoping a future Snow Leopard update will solve this?
