PowerMac G5 2.0 Doesn't Boot After Initial Install

I tried installing Leopard on my brother's G5 this morning and the most peculiar thing is happening... it seems to install fine (I watched it finish) but it never gets past the 'spinning white apple screen'... occassionally, I'll hear drive activity as if it's trying to boot but no such luck...
This is the 2nd time it has happened... any thoughts?

Did you backup your data prior to installing?
Did you erase, archive, or upgrade (the default installation option)?
Is anything attached besides a display, an Apple keyboard and Apple mouse?

  • Computer doesn't boot after Tiger install and restart

I upgraded to Tiger OS from OS 10.2. Neither the upgrade or the Archive and Install worked, so I finally did Erase and Install. Tiger installed and it proceeded to restart. It restarted, however only the gray screen with the apple came up, and NO spinning gear. After waiting for about 15 min. I shut the computer down, and turned it on holding the C button to see if it would start from disk. It did, so I closed out of the disk to try to restart again. Same gray screen, no spinning gear. I'm stuck. Can anyone help? Thank you!

Was this a retail version of Tiger?

  • Mac doesn't boot after splitting BOOTCAMP drive under Windows 8.1

Macbook pro mid 2012, OS X Mavericks
I've installed Windows 8.1 x64 using Bootcamp assistant. In Windows I went to Disk Management and shrank drive C: from 200 GB to 94 GB and created a new drive D: from unallocated space.
After restart Windows doesn't boot giving some error and quickly restart. If I hold "Option" key I see only Windows. Mac OS X disappeared.
    How to fix?

So, I've tried 1001 ways to recover. Nothing worked. Interned Recovery gives -2002F error. Macbook pro 2012 can't boot from bootable DVD to use DiskWarrior, Drive Genius or similar. It can't boot from OS X Lion install DVD. I had only Windows PC to fix this. So
I asked a friend with latest Mavericks(which I had too) to make a Recovery USB and make a DMG file from it and send me over internet. Then I used the TransMac application under Windows and burned DMG on my USB stick. My god it worked. After 2 days of struggle I found this solution. I was able to boot from this USB stick into Recovery Mode and from there I can reinstall Mac Os X Mavericks. Somehow it sees my Ethernet cable and doesn't give error.
Note: that Disk Utility wasn't able to recover partitions. I tried to run DiskWarrior from terminal but it gave me an error. TestDisk didn't run too. So I'm doing a clean installation.
I could recover or backup my files using Paragon Mac Recovery Bootable DVD, but there was no need since it's my new macbook and I didn't have much files there.
Windows had changed the HD partition map from GUID Partition Table(GPD) to MBR. And made HD a "dynamic disk". This is why Mac Os wasn't able to boot.
If anyone knows how to convert a disk back to GPD and make Mac OS able to boot please let me know. I'm still installing Mac Os X on USB stick and didn't change my HD.

  • System doesn't boot after time machine restore to 10.6.8

    I had a mbp with 10.6.8
    did time machine backup
    installed yosemite
saw the app I need for work not work, new I have to go back to that backup
    restart->cmd-r->restore from time machine
after this my computer doesn't boot from main disk (that says 10.6.8 now), and cmd-r doesn't work anymore on startup. option gives only the not working main drive, even with time machine plugged in.
what can I do to get my computer to start in any way?

Can you use the original install disk/or SL retail disk to start up the MBP and install Snow Leopard again?
    Ciao.

  • Comp doesn't boot after bios update

I flashed the new 1.90 bios using winflash on my K8N Neo2 Platinum, after the reboot my comp screen didn't turn on and ventilators stayed at max rpm.
I tried clearing CMOS (i know it can't do anything but it's worth trying) and using another stick of ram (PC4000 on hynix chips that can do cl3, my BH5 doesn't boot on cl 3)
    but nothing helped.
Is there a way of reverting to the older BIOS?

Well it's hard to flash back to an earlier bios if your system don't post .
What you can do is to shut off system , remove +5vsby by turning off PSU .
Then remove all devices except the neccesary cpu/memory/gfx card/floppy drive (specially disconnect all USB ,including usb mouse/usb kb )
After having it barebone , reset cmos with the jumper (min 15.secs to be sure) .
Connect the power and see if it posts with a normal PS2 keyboard and no mouse.
If it does you can flash back with a msdos bootable floppy with awfl833d.exe and the bios file on it .

  • 3750x doesn't boot after upgrade to version15

Due to a problem with POE+ i have tried to upgrade the IOS to Version15.0.2SE2,  from 12.2.58. unfortunatly the Switch doesn't boot up anymore. It starts to decompress and install the IOS 2 Times, after the Second try it displays "unable to boot" and the switch goes in Bootloader-mode.
When i look at the version i See that bootloader is still the old version 12.2.58.
It seems that the bootloader doesn't geht upgraded and that's why the Switch can't Boot the new Image.
Is there anything i can do to Upgrade the bootloader seperatly?
    It's a 3750X48PF-S
    Many thanks
    Andy

This is a stack of 2 switches, both have the same problem and they are still running old image (as V15 doesn't work)

  • Macbook pro doesn't boot after iOS upgrade

    Hi all,
I've upgraded my macbook pro (was requested automatically the upgrade) and after reboot to finish the installation, my macbook doesn't boot up.
Is there any way to boot it up? A kind of boot in safe mode?
I'm trying to power it up but nothing. It doesn't boot at all.
Please, can you help me with this.
    Thanks
    Álvaro

iOS is for iPhone, iPad not for Mac. So what upgrade are you referring to?

  • LDom doesn't boot after SAN controllers replaced

I have an LDom that was installed on a SAN volume. Both of the SAN controllers needed to be replaced, and now we get the the following when trying to boot this LDom:
Boot device: /virtual-devices@100/channel-devices@200/disk@0 File and args:
    Evaluating:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
I can mount the volume directly on the host (with the LDom unbound) and all the slices appear fine. I also ran fsck, and it reports no problems.
I can boot the LDom of the net and run an upgrade, but it still does not boot after the upgrade.
    This appears similar to:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5166845&tstart=90
But, that is for an LDom inside a file.

  • Satellite M200 doesn't boot after RAM 4GB upgrade

    Hi,
I recently upgraded my RAM just to speed things up a little as RAM is soo cheap these days.
    I have a M200 T2130 Vista came with 1GB (2*512) sticks.
The new sticks are 2 *2GB Dane-elec DDR2 pc2-5300, when I put the two in and rebooted the hard drive light came on briefly and then it just stayed idol, no POST, Bios options.
I tried using a single 512 stick with both new sticks and they both work in a 2.5GB setup just not together also this only works when the 512 stick is in the more internal slot and not the other way around.
So if anyone has had a similar prob or can give me some advice that would be great, I'm not to sure if the motherboard can support 4GB?
    Thanks, Dave.

    Hi
There are two possibilities why your M200 doesnt boot after the RAM upgrade.
Firstly the installed RAM could be not compatible or could be faulty or the notebook doesnt support the 4GB RAM.
I dont know what M200 do you have exactly but you could check the installed chipset and could check on the Intel page if this chipset would support the 4GB RAM.

  • Ix2-dl doesn't boot after firmware upgrade

I upgraded to the latest firmware and it won't reboot now. the power light just keeps blinking.

    Hello lcgrzy,
I recommend trying the following steps:
--Power off unit, remove power cable and re-seat all disks.  Then reconnect the power adapter to attempt to boot up.
--While powered off, swapped the disks to opposite bays. Then see if the unit fully boots after about 5 minutes.
--Try booting the unit one disk at a time to see if either disk will fully boot.
--Try booting the unit one disk at a time to see if the firmware on the unit seems to be ok.
--If the unit does not seem to boot after the above, please call lenovoEMC support.

  • OS X won't boot after being installed on an encrypted partition

    Hello!
Today i formatted my entire disk, but made it Journaled, Encrypted. It installed (actually "downloaded aditional files"), and then booted with a cross/do not proceed sign. I booted from the install disk again, got an error telling me to reinstall OS X. I was never asked for my password, and when i started disk utility, the disk was locked.
Why is the option there if it doesn't work?
    Andrei

    Thanks for this info:
    Kappy wrote:
There may be many reasons why it didn't work but without knowing exactly what you did it's pretty difficult to make any presumptions.
Others use it, and there have not been too many posts about using encrypted disks and FileVault 2. But searching the forums may help you.
One thing I'd consider trying if you were willing to take the time and trouble:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Step 1 can be changed to whatever method you are using to boot into the Lion installer or a Recovery HD volume.
But as ai said, i don't need it. I'm aleadry installing it normally.
So no need to help. I'm just curious why the Encrypted option isn't working.
    Thia is what i did:
Booted from the disk, selected my HDD, clicked erase and selected "HFS+ extended (Journaled, Encrypted)"
    It installed
After rebooting, it didn't ask me for the password i set for encryption.
Booted with the Cross (X) instead of the logo.
And that's it... I've seen that if you turn on filevault, it'll ask you for a password when booting. But for me it didn't.
RIght now it's working (i used the :HFS+ Extended (journaled)" without encryption.
And i want to know if it's my fault, or Apple's.

  • Can't boot after clean install X.3 on iBook G4

After multiple problems with my iBook freezing, not booting etc., I backed up files, erased the hd and did a clean install using the install DVDs #1-3, but don't think that I need to do software restore (not sure what that is).
I had to do the installs with the iBook hooked to my G4 as a target hd because the iBook wouldn't stay booted long enough to do anything.
Message said "successful install". While still in target mode I see that all the files and system stuff seems to have installed. But then when I dismount the iBook from target mode and try to boot it up, I get the folder with the mac incon and flashing question mark.
For starters, does that mean it can't find the system folder?
I'm no expert at this, so hope it doesn't get too technical. What's the most likely problem, and what steps should I take now?
    iBook 4.1, 933, G4   Mac OS X (10.3)
    Mac G4 450 SP   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

this is an update and clarification on my first post about this problem. here's a full summary and latest news.
i found out that this iBook G4 does not have a pram
battery. . . so i can rule that out as a problem.
It's also not a problem with the regular power battery -I have not been running it off the ibook battery during this troubleshooting - I have it plugged in.
this is my daughter's ibook which I think was at risk because she, unfortunately, has been running it with the hd too full for some time. the other risky behavior was that she works with it on her bed, so i think it does not get good air flow - in case that created some problem. (if kids would only listen to their parents . . .)
Anyway, from what she told me, the problem behavior is that it freezes, no cursor control, doesn't matter if in any particular app or just at the
finder. would not reboot unless left off for at least
a few hours. then it would reboot and last about 3
minutes before freezing again, regardless of whether
doing any work or not - could happen just sitting at the finder.
known risky status: 40GB hard drive had about 2.5 GB
available, occasionally less to the point where it
gave a warning, and then she'd clear off just enough to not get the warning.
    Problem solving steps:
booted iBook onto Apple Hardware Test disk that came
with the iBook (not Tech Tools Pro). Passed all those hardware tests.
prepared to re-install from original install cds
iBook would not boot onto the intall cd - blank blue
    screen.
iBook continued to freeze after a few minutes of being
booted, so resorted to connecting it to my G4 as a
target disk. Did good in target mode.
With it in target mode we cleared the excess files, backed up on external hard. Did a Disk Warrior defrag, rebuilding the directory.
Got out of target mode to test bootup. Still failed to boot, got blue screen.
put back into target mode and did erase and install.
Custom installed from original cds OSX.3 and then again defragged
    using DiskWarrior.
Got out of target mode and tested boot. Failed boot, got folder with flashing question mark.
Next I zapped the pram, and it booted to the install cd -
at least i think that's where i was when i was able to
access disk utility and attempt "repair permissions"
Started repairing permissions and it sailed along for 2
minutes and then : ( froze.
I shut down for a little while and then rebooted (using C key) onto the install
disk (not in target mode this time).
Finally, being able to boot onto the install cd for the first time while not in target mode, I decided to try to do a new "erase and install" . . . to see if doing the install while not in target mode would give better results.
I also decided that this time I'd do "easy" rather than "custom" install. At 80% complete on install disk #1, it froze. Attempts at reboot still get the grey apple followed by just a blank blue screen.
I don't have Tech Tools Pro. Would that be of any use? Any suggestions"
    Please help.

    Any idea?
    Thanks

    Hi -
I was wondering if you solved this problem. I had the exact same issue on Win2K after I installed the Java Portlet Development Kit. Now my Apache JServ does not work.
This is a sample of my error_log:
[Fri Jun 07 10:48:01 2002] [notice] FastCGI: process manager initialized
[Fri Jun 07 10:48:08 2002] [error] OPM:Can not find one alive process
[Fri Jun 07 10:48:08 2002] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: /servlet/IsItWorking
[Fri Jun 07 10:51:22 2002] [warn] OPM: ADM: Process 380 terminated using SIGTERM successfully
I have re-checked my jserv.properties, jserv.conf, zone.properties several times and I can't see the problem. I tried to manually remove the entire PDK and go back to my original state (I saved a copy of all my config files) but it still doesn't work.
Did you find a way to fix this?
    Thanks!!!
    Heather
