PowerMac G5 act as a switch?

I have a room at home where I have my PowerMac G5 running Leopard OS, and I'm going to be installing another computer in the room for another purpose. Instead of buying a switch to split up the ethernet cord that had been run into this room, since the G5 has dual ports on the back, would I be able to run a cord into the first port to provide the G5 with connectivity, then another cord from the G5 to the other computer for internet access? Or does it not work like that? Thanks

Well, assuming the PC has USB, one option would be...

    Samuel32_826,
If you have a virus you can run a system recovery to remove the virus.
The system recovery will remove everything on your computer including the virus and put the system back to day one. Just like when you opened it out of the box.
Here is a link that will walk you through the steps of the recovery.
Let me know how everything goes.

  • Can I use a NI 6009 DAQ device to act as a switch to close a circuit?

Can I use (and how do I do it)a NI 6009 DAQ Device as a swith to close a ciruit?

You can't use the 6009 as a switch. You can use the DIO to control a switch (like a FET or transitor).  How you would do this really depends on your application.

  • Hardware push button acting as mechanical switch (latch when released)

    Hello,
I have a simple question. How can I have a hardware push button (momentary switch fed into DAQ board as a digital input) exhibit the same characteristics as a boolean with its mechanical action set to Latch when released?
Is it possible to do that?
    Thanks,

Is the code implemented easier when a "latch when pressed" behavior is required?
The problem I am facing is that when I press the hardware button, the indicator "element" is incrementing as long as the button is pressed. I need it to only increment one time until I release the button and press it again.
Hence, everytime I press the button (no matter how long I keep it pressed), I want the indicator to increment only once to count the number of times the button is pressed.
I attached the VI below to make things clearer.

  • How do i configure my WRT160Nv3 as a switch/hub

As the title say's i need to configure my WRT160Nv3 to act as a switch instead of a DHCP router and whatnot.   My Cable company provided us with a free wired and wireless router that is better than this one, but alas i need more cabled ports, and would like to have everything on the same network.
Current LAN DHCP server is 192.168.0.1
    Linksys WRT160Nv3 is 192.168.1.1
I have disabled DHCP. but that is it if anyone could help me figure this out i would greatly appreciate it.
    **** summary ****
I would like everything to be accessable and on the same IP set 192.168.0.***
for home networking and file sharing etc.
    -Jon T

Set the LAN IP address of the WRT160N to 192.168.0.2 and disable the DHCP server. Then wire one of the LAN ports of the WRT to your cable router.

  • Design help related to ACE to Switch connectivity using Port-Channel

    Hi,
I have a Cisco ACE 4710 configured in One-Arm mode. This ACE is getting connected with 2 3750 switches. These 2 3750 switches connected in trunk mode.
ACE is connected to these 3750 switches using Port-channel.
    ACE Config:

      no shutdown
    ===========================================================
The problem is that 3750 switches are not stacked.
Application is working fine. But i am getting a lot of MAC flapping messages..
kindly suggest whether this design is OK or something needs to be done to rectify it...
    Attached a small diagram..

    Hello acharyr123,
I don't think this design is ok, and it would cause mac flapping since the two indepedendent 3750 switches will learn the ace mac addresses off of two different interfaces.  The 3750s would have to be stacked so that they would act as one switch then this should work correctly.

  • Cisco 3850 Switch and Windows 7 IP Conflicts

    Team,
Last evening (Christmas eve) we setup a pair of Cisco 3850 with IP Base version 3.3.35SE (recommended) and 3.7.0E (very latest).
We got these to replace a very old switch that had died. Attached to this network are windows 7 PC's with all the standard patches, service packs, etc.
with standard port configs - no PC would work - and in fact on each screen we got the windows 7 IP Conflict pop up box.
This seemed very odd to us, as we know these IP's are all static (no dhcp on this segment at all)
we went with a very vanilla config on each port
    interface g1/0/1
    switchport host
that is it - nothing special at all.
well, after hours of research we found the 3850 has a problem where its "ip device tracking" (even though disabled, by way of NOT being enabled on any interface) will effect the windows 7 PC's ip address in use detection port start up phase!
This is a very big problem. I am frankly SHOCKED Cisco would release a major switch that is going to not work when connected to the average network with windows 7 PC's.
we tried 3+ hours of prescribed work-arounds found when researching this issue -
ip device tracking probe delay 10 (global config)
ip device tracking max 0 (disabed, on interface)
    finally,
nmsp attach suppress (interface, however this appears to be a default command in all IOS-XE versions we tried, as the command did NOT show in the show run) . this effected many different nic card vendors (laptops, desktops) and nic card drivers levels from old to very recent.
    Finally,
we compared a 3850 in another location to this one - and we never got HIT by this problem before because that 3850 only as TRUNK ports and no windows 7 hosts directly attached.
Doing more research, I found out this also can effect vmware guests running windows SERVER.
this is now a huge issue as we have a scheduled deployment of 3850's throughout our network which is going to be put on hold.
the work-around I came up with which is not great is -
Make ALL the "access" ports connected to PC TRUNK ports and leave the NATIVE vlan (untagged) as the vlan you want the PC's to be in
    interface g1/0/1
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport trunk native vlan 1
this is NOT an acceptable workaround as this presents security issues even with
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1, etc. as the only allowed vlan.
Note: this issue manifested itself and windows 7 PC's were UNABLE to use the network. if you do "ipconfig /all | more" you would see
192.168.0.140(duplicate) and the interface would actually use 169.254.0.239(duplicate) so the duplicate message appeared twice in the output.
    1) With and without an SVI interface on each 3850 for the vlan where the windows 7 machines had a duplicate
    2) when we had an SVI and the command ip device tracking probe use-svi (or whatever the hidden command is I forget now, but it took it)
    3) when we had aaa new-model configured - and not configured - thinking this was some artifact of having aaa turn on something like 802.1x port state
    4) when could confirm NO DHCP SNOOPING
    5) when we DID not use static IP's - and had the switch assign DHCP addresses - the Windows 7 PC's STILL had duplicates and didnt work for their "Just leased" ip's.
    6) when we could confirm ios-xe ip device tracking = disabled with show ip device tracking status, etc.
This is a major problem for this 3850 and unless we get a definitive answer on why this is happening and how we can rectify we are going to have to return our 3850's and get HP Procurve's something I would rather avoid doing. There is NO REASON I can imagine other than older switches who's ports default to ROUTED ports (i.e.. no ip switchport) where a switch should not at least function as a bare switch with essentially a default configuration out of the box.
Any ideas? I'm working well now with the ports ALL in trunking mode with vlan 1 native, but this is not a scalable workaround we can live with as we have security risks of a port not blocking certain vlans from going out ports to pc's, etc. that attackers could send tags on at that point, etc.
    thanks,
    Joe Brunner

thanks for replying - i'm not onsite (its a standalone network) - but here is what it is -
    Answers in line -
This all stems from a switch replacement correct?
yes a 10 year old Allied Telesyn switch was replaced that had no config - like a hub, just used for connectivity.
Are these 3850's in a stack?
    >yes, tested all aspects of the stack many times.
Does it have a managment ip address -If so, is it using the old switch ip address
    >old switch had no ip - i made a "management interface" on vlan 1 - BUT no ip on the built-in management interface on the switch.
What are they connecting to? (a router/L3 switch/anohter switch- cisco-HP etc..)
    >various other devices - only 1 link back to a single 3750x stack. that switch is "hardened" so to speak to reveal or propagate very little by design.
How are they connected( L3 interface/L2 trunk/access port)
    >all ports are left in trunk mode with vlan 1 as the active and untagged port. this was the workaround done to ever get the switch going. in "out of the box" or default mode as we initially wanted (no config) links to windows 7 PC's didnt work. links to linux or other devices non-windows did work!
Are thse switches performing inter-vlan routing or just acting as host switches?
    >dumb flat network, no routing.
    Is ip routing enabled?
    >not unless enabled on 3850 by default. I didnt type "ip routing"
Do you have multiple vlans in your network and if so ar ethe being propergated to these new switches?
Your 7 pcs = are they just client pcs not servers?
client PC's - no servers OS per say.
can you confirm something like ICS isnt enabled (Internet connection sharing)  on any of them?
    >yes not enabled.
Are the just using one NIC each?
    > one machine is dual homed - but we know where its "second nic" goes - to another cisco network which is NOT connected back to this one. we traced all our ports a few times thinking even perhaps some small hub was "reflecting" traffic back to us - like a blackbox. Strangest thing -
default config out of the box - with ALL ports SHUTDOWN EXCEPT the single windows 7 facing port - the windows 7 machine STILL registered an IP CONFLICT when connected to the 3850 - even when it had NO SVI's!!! (i know mind numbing). if you disconnected the pc and connected it to an old cisco switch - it worked fine!!! wow.
    sh switch
2 identical 3850's in working stack. power and network stacked. both at same version, etc - upgraded each time with "software install file flash:<long ios name>.bin
tested all power and general 3850 stacking. saw no issues.
    sh int trunk
    >all ports are now trunks (hence the workaround used to get it up).
has 20 trunks to PC's and some single connected switches (far away on fiber) - all allow only vlan 1 - no other vlans were created - very very simple network. vlan 1 is native
    sh vlan brief
    >just vlan 1 - no vlans created, checked this many times - had vlan 100 at one point - made sure it was gone over a period of hours.
    sh vtp status
not setup - left complete default; no vtp domain set - connected to all switches in transparent model if a switch connection exists.
    sh cdp neighbours
cant post (for god and country LOL) but there is one link back to our "core" so to speak - that switch is hardened not to allow any settings to slip over to new switches so hence no vtp, cdp is one to help troubleshooting.
    sh ip route
just the L and C routes for the vlan 1 ip address 192.168.17.1/24
    no static routes
no vlan interfaces other than int vlan 1
no ip address on g0/0/0 -> the default 3850 management interface hard assigned to the 3850 VRF you cant remove.
    int g0/0/0
    ip vrf forwarding Switch_Mgmt
i can get over there if you think of anything else key to show the group.
    thanks,
    Joe

  • N7K Peer-switch Konfiguration

Hi I have a question regarding peer-switch konfiguration on a vPC/vPC+ pair of N7K with vPC and non vPC attached switches
If I understood correctly with following configuration
for vPC attached switches (assuming the have default STP-prio) the vPC-bundle acts as one Switch with the priority of 4096
for STP non-VPC attached switches for VLAN1-1960 the N7K-A is the root-bridge and for VLAN 1961-3920 the N7K-B is the root-bridge,
    N7K-A
    vpc domain 20
      peer-switch
      role priority 1
    spanning-tree pseudo-information
    vlan 1-3920 root priority 4096
      vlan 1-1960 designated priority 4096
      vlan 1961-3920 designated priority 8192
    N7K-B
    vpc domain 20
    peer-switch
    role priority 2
    spanning-tree pseudo-information
      vlan 1-3920 root priority 4096
      vlan 1-1960 designated priority 8192
      vlan 1961-3920 designated priority 4096
Is that coorect so far ?
If yes then I have one outstandig question.
Do we need the global configuration for spanning-tree priority in this case?
    spanning-tree vlan 1-3920 priority 4096
as we configure it in a pure vPC environment
    N7K-A
    spanning-tree vlan 1-3920 priority 4096
    vpc domain 20
    peer-switch
    role priority 1
    N7K-B
    spanning-tree vlan 1-3920 priority 4096
    vpc domain 20
    peer-switch
    role priority 2
    Thanks

Here is a description of the use of the Spanning-tree Pseudo-information and the Peer switch command on the Nexus 7000. Maybe this will help clarify some misunderstanding:
    SETUP:
7K1 and 7K2 are vPC peers and have a higher priority      than 7K3. So 7K1 and 7K2s ports to 7K3 will all be DESIGNATED.
7K3 is connected to both 7K1 and 7K2 using individual      STP links.
7K4 is connected to both 7K1 and 7K2 in a vPC.
    Common Points for all Scenarios:
If vPC fails for whatever reason; all links will revert      to regular spanning-tree.
The root priority on 7K1 and 7K2 will be the vPC System-MAC (same on both) and the Designated priority will use the respective non-vPC System-MACs of 7k1 and 7K2
Even if the STP Priority is configured globally and lower, the Pseudo Root Priority and Designated Priorities are still used for STP calculations.
    The STP Pseudo-information HACK:
Allows you to set a different root priority and different designated priority. To satisfy the requirement for the Peer switch command and still be able to perform VLAN load balancing for non-vPC dual connected links.
Root Priority: Used in Root Bridge Election
Designated Priority: Used in Designated Bridge Election
SCENARIO 1: Same STP Priority configured Globally with the Peer switch Enabled (Individual STP links)
The Root priority and Designated priority on 7K1 and 7K2 will be the same as the globally configured or default STP priority
One of the links to 7K1 and 7K2 becomes the "Root Port" and the other becomes "ALTN BLK"
Since they have the same Root Priority and the same vPC system MAC, the lower port will be selected as the root port.
SCENARIO 2: BOTH STP Pseudo-information Root and Designated Priorities Configured with Peer Switch Enabled (Individual STP links)
The Root priority may be different from the Designated Priority based on the STP Pseudo-information configuration.
VLAN traffic from 7K3 is load balanced between 7K1 and 7K2 based on the configured Pseudo-Designated Priority. So the Root port for a VLAN from 7K3 will be to the device with a lower Pseudo-Designated priority.
SCENARIO 3: ONLY STP Pseudo-information Root Priority Configured with Peer Switch Enabled (Individual STP links)
The Root priority and Designated Priority are the same as the Pseudo Root Priority.
    No VLAN load balancing occurs
The Root port is the link to the vPC primary switch. The Link to the vPC Secondary is “ALTN BLK”.
SCENARIO 4: ONLY STP Pseudo-information Designated Priority Configured with Peer Switch Enabled (Individual STP links)
The Root priority will be the Globally configured or default STP Priority
The Designated priority will still be the Pseudo-Designated priority
VLAN load balancing will still occur.
SCENARIO 5: Same STP Priority configured Globally with the Peer switch Enabled (vPC links on 7K4)
The Root priority and Designated priority on 7K1 and 7K2 will be the same as the globally configured or default STP priority.
If the vPC Peer-link fails, the interface going to the secondary vPC device (7K2) will be shut DOWN.
SCENARIO 6: BOTH STP Pseudo-information Root and Designated Priorities Configured with Peer Switch Enabled (vPC links on 7K4)
The Root priority and Designated Priority are the same as the configured Pseudo-Root Priority.
If the vPC Peer-link fails, the interface going to the secondary vPC device (7K2) will be shut DOWN.
SCENARIO 7: ONLY STP Pseudo-information Root Priority Configured with Peer Switch Enabled (vPC links on 7K4)
The Root priority and Designated Priority are the same as the configured Pseudo-Root Priority.
If the vPC Peer-link fails, the interface going to the secondary vPC device (7K2) will be shut DOWN.
SCENARIO 8: ONLY STP Pseudo-information Designated Priority Configured with Peer Switch Enabled (vPC links on 7K4)
The Root priority and Designated priority on 7K1 and 7K2 will be the same as the globally configured or default STP priority.
If the vPC Peer-link fails, the interface going to the secondary vPC device (7K2) will be shut DOWN

  • Setting up WRVS4400N for switch & wireless access point

Howdy, first post here.  What is the proper way to configure this device to act as a switch and wireless access point so I can connect it to a switch with router upstream?  I have a DLink router that was easy:  disable UPnP, disable DHCP, set an IP/Subnet, and it worked.
My main router has a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0 but in the WRVS4400N setup screen I only get a list box with a limited number of masks, all of which are 255.255.255.x.  Is there any way to specify the 240?

No. You cannot use a subnet mask larger then 255.255.255.0 on Linksys routers. They are only built to handle 255.255.255.0 and smaller. I guess they consider a LAN which requires a larger subnet, i.e. expects to run more then 253 networked devices requires a larger router.
The only thing you can do is to choose 255.255.255.0 and to pick an IP address which matches the IP address from which you expect to do the usual configuration work. If you use 10.0.0.0/255.255.240.0 but the computers which have to configure the router are all in 10.0.1.0/255.255.255.0 you can use that subnet. This works with computers even if they have a different subnet mask.
Of course, you can set any IP address you want, even one completely outside your normal LAN in order to "hide" the web interface from the normal LAN operation. The IP address of the router in your setup is irrelevant for the switching and wireless access. Both operate on ethernet/MAC addresses and the IP address of the router does not play any role there. If you use the 10 subnet mentioned before you could as well leave the router at 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0. Whenever you have to access the web interface of the router you must temporarily set a static IP address inside 192.168.1.* on the computer...

  • Performance of stacked switch

    I'm installing a stack of 3x 3750G switches, which are inter-connected w/ StackWise cables.
Are stacked switches truely act as one switch w/o any performance penalty if a packet has to traverse from one switch to another in the same stack?
Would it be better to arrange the ports together on the same switch if I know they'll mostly generate local traffice among themselves?
Another question I have is sould I try to distribute ports among the stacked switches as much as possible or is the stack really functioning as a unified stack??
For instance, I've got 3x 24-port 3750G's; thus a total of 72 ports. If I currently have only 24 objects (clients or switches), should I plug 8 in each switch or it doesn't make a difference if I plug all 24 objects into the same switch?

A customer asked me this exact question the other day....
The stack has an interconnect speed of 32G. Thus a packet coming in from 1/0/1 going to 3/0/1 will hit the backplane on switch 1 (speed so high you can forget about it for all intents and purposes) traverse the 32G interconnect bus, across the backplane on switch 3 to the egress port. You can consider this almost identical to the 6500 series when using the "classic" series line cards (61xx series) which likewise share a 32G backplane bus.
I have tested this with IXIA gigabit traffic generators which blasted 20 Gig of traffic with 50000 flows across the switch stack. The boxes were solid as a rock. 20Gig is rather a lot of traffic.... !!!
The only occassion when you might have a problem with this architecture is if you have multi gigabit traffic crossing the switch stack that requires QOS priority on an already heavily utilised stack. In that case you could possibly get contention for the stacking bus (unless there is a way of prioritising the traffic gaining access to the stacking bus???? There hasn't been in the past). Cisco's answer to that would be twofold.
1.If you required such traffic patterns with such heavy traffic and QOS requirements then you should be using a 6500 series switch with high end interface blades.
2.That the 3750 supports ingress QOS to precisely address the problem of overloading the switch fabric.

    Steve

    Here is my R2 config:
    interface Serial0/0
    ip address 10.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
    encapsulation frame-relay
    no fair-queue
    frame-relay interface-dlci 20
Normally I would enter the frame-relay switch command?
    Frame-relay route 16 interface s1/1 20
I want to use subinterrfaces and not multipoint.
Why does this not work?? I cannot get connectivity from R1 to R2!

It is fine to use subinterfaces on R1 and R2 (in fact it is best practice to use point to point subinterface for Frame Relay). But I do not believe that you can do subintefaces on the router that is acting as the switch. I believe that the key elements of the router as frame relay switch include: frame-relay switching (which you have), Frame-relay intf-type dce (which you have), and Frame-relay route 16 interface s1/1 20 (which you need to add in place of the subinterfaces with DLCI identifier).

  • Ethernet Switch shaped/same dimensions as Mac Mini

I'm in the process of setting up a server closet consisting of a few Minis, but since my Fios Actiontec router is only 4 ports I need to find a switch to run the Minis off that will only run one ethernet cable back to the router. I was hoping I could find one that looks just like the mini so I can create a cool looking stack, but I can't seem to find anything doing a Google search.
Does anyone know if such a device exists? Alternatively I could do a Time Capsule that I think is a little larger than the Mini (could be wrong about that). If I go that route I think I would want to utilize the wifi but at the same time disable the router functions and have it act as a switch and WAP. I'd want to leave the routing up to the Fios router. Possible? Ideal?

An airport extreme base station (non time capsule) is roughly the same size.
& pretty sure can turn off the routing functionality like any other router so basically make it a dummmy switch / WAP to the FIOS router.
but at $179 USD, is a bit more expensive than other devices.

  • Etherchannel between stack switches[3750] and standalone switch[3560]

    Hi,
I have 2*3750 switches in stack as core and 1*3560 switch in access layer. I want to enable ether channel between stack switch[3750A & 3750B] and 3560 switches.
Have connected  2 links from 3560 switch to stack switch, one link to 3750A and other link to 3750B. Will it work in this way as per my requirement?
or i should enabled stacking on 3560 switch too and configure cross-stack ether channel between 3750 stack and 3560 stack. i refered few cisco documents, but the cross stack etherchannel configuration example has 3750 at both end stacks.

    Hi,
This should work fine as per you set up, the 3750 stack will be acting as one switch, which means that the ether-channel configuration should be straight forward. There is no need to stack the 3560 for this to work, also the 3560 are not stackable.
    Hope this helps.

  • Virtual switching to connect 2 Digital outputs

I am using FPGA and need two digital I/O to link (act as a switch) for  a couple of seconds then release.  lets say pins 1 and 2
Can anyone advise how I get them to join virtally so the outputs of the two channels (pins 1 & 2) are connected. I do not want any voltage on the lines.
More info: Using NI 9403 modules with CRIO 9148
    Thanks

    Hi hawkstringer,
Just trying to understand what is it exactly that you wish to do? Are you intending to connect the pins internally ( within the FPGA) or externally?
Also, Is there any particular reason as to why you would like to do this?
