PowerMac G5 and OS 10.4.8 - Sleep problems

Hello,
After I upgraded to version 10.4.8 from 10.4.7, my G5 dualcore won't wake up from sleep. If I try to wake the machine, it's drives spin up but the screen stays black, and the keyboard is dead. After a little while, the fans are going crazy.
I have tried this:
- boot from DVD repair disk/disk permissions
- zap pram
- created new account to see if 3rd party software made the trouble
- disconnecting all my devices
- re-installing 10.4.8 from combo-updater
Apple Support wanted me to boot in safe-mode, but that just made the machine crash, after a few minutes at the grey startup screen.
This problem is really naggin me, as I have to shut everything down when I leave my machine now...
Any ideas?
Best regards
Gunnar Kristiansen

PowerMac G5 2.3 DualCore   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.5GB ram, 250 + 500 GB HD

I just had an almost similar experience. My fans would run high speed all the time. It would just go to "sleep" right in the middle of doing something, sometimes a video render, and I would have to tap the space bar to wake it. I started the machine into open firmware to do resets and my keyboard wouldn't work. He had me do something for a diagnostic and I got diagnostic lights 1 & 7. Eventually Apple support told me to take the machine in for repair because the motherboard was "getting hung up".
Be warned: after I got my machine back I realized that it wasn't my machine. Instead of reparing my machine they had simply put my hard drive in a new machine. I know this because my case only had 1 scratch in it and this machine I have now has multiple scratches and dents in it. Because it took almost 2 weeks to get it back I am hesitant to take it back in. I use it to earn a living and 2 weeks without a machine kills my business.

  • Powerbook sleep problem

I own a powerbook G4 al (15") and I also have a sleep problem: my powerbook won't go to sleep when I close the lid or when i selectd Stop from the Apple menu.
Now, this wasn't happening in panther (10.3.9) nor in tiger until 10.4.2. I have installed updates one by one from 10.4 and found out that update 10.4.3 had something to do with my problem (doesn't matter if I use Software Updates or if i use combo updates).
I tried repairing permission, resetting the various nvram, pmu, ... but without success.
Also updated to 10.4.4 but the problem remain.
I installed 10.4.2 on another partition and there everything is working fine.
What is different in os x 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 from 10.4.2 that could cause this?
    Every suggestion is welcome!!!

    Hi.
    Hmmm...
    1. You wrote: "-in my other partition (system 10.4.2) i can run the maintenance script (via terminal, launchd etc), after updating to 10.4.3 an error is reported (file non found etc)"What is the exact text of the message (in English, please ;-)).
    2. You wrote: "(i read somewhere that those maintenance scripts could solve my sleep problem, so i tried them)"That information is incorrect. The maintenance scripts merely prune and rotate a collection of log files. If a rogue process is constantly writing messages to one of the Console logs, that can prevent idle sleep, which is why I asked about Canon and HP peripherals.
    3. OK, so there's no scanner or printer. Are there any peripherals attached? PC Cards (nee PCMCIA cards) installed?
    4. Here's some things to try:4.1 First, As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. This will rule out some common troublemakers.
4.1 Trash all preferences related to Energy Saver:4.1.1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
4.1.2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder and trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    - com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
You'll probably be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
    4.1.3. Empty the Trash.
4.1.4. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.4.3. See if a rogue Startup or Login Item may be the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.5. Not sure exactly what model of PowerBook you have, but if it is one of the "Double-Layer SD" models see:
    - "Don't move a PowerBook G4 (Double-Layer SD) for a moment after putting it to sleep"; and
    - "About the PowerBook G4 sleep indicator light status."
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro crashing and restarting on wake from sleep?

My MacBook Pro 17inch Late 2011 has started crashing and restarting on wake from sleep 3 out of 4 times.  This is really interrupting my workflow and I need help to remedy it.
Here is about 2 minutes from the system log at the time of restart.
After looking at some other posts, this may be a spontaneous log-out, but I DO NOT have automatic log-out selected in security preferences.

  • Unresponsive Keyboard and Trackpad problem AT STARTUP + Sleep problem

When I turn on my computer it boots the OS and everything works except for the trackpad and the keyboard. I wait for about 5-7 minutes and then the trackpad and the keyboard start working.
    Additional problems:
If I try to sleep my computer, the screen turns off, but the computer never stops working, so I have to force it to shut down.
    Temporal Solutions
    1) Boot in safe mode, it solves the trackpad/keyboard problems but not the Sleeping problem
    Attempted fixes
    1) Conencted external keyboard mouse/keyboard. Doesn't work
    2) Reset the battery controller.
    3) Reinstalled 10.6
    4) Installed 10.5
    5) Installed 10.6.3
    Known Stuff:
    1) The trackpad/keyboard are always connected as I can move the mouse and use some gestures with the Better Touch Tool app, and the keyboard works because if I click the Caps Lock key, the small led turns on.
    2) Also, I have the HardwareGrowler app which tells me if hardware gets connected or disconnected and it never tells me anything about the trackpad/keyboard getting disconnected.
    3) The OS is working at startup because apps show stuff and get updated and I can still get growl notifications.
NOTE: This is an intermittent problem, about 1 out of 10 times I turn on the computer I GET the problem.
    Thanks a lot!

I came across a similar issue as the original poster. My trackpad and keyboard are unresponsive for 5 - 7 minutes after startup. I've updated my OS to 10.6.4 twice and it's still happening. I recognized this behavior after the Preferences->Network pane froze while I was trying to remove a VPN setting. Removing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations did not help the problem.
Do any of you have advice on debugging the issue?

  • IChat randomly loads and wakes my machine from sleep.

iChat has been randomly loading and waking my machine from sleep. I can even be sitting in front of it and suddenly it will load and log me in AIM. Seems very virus like, but not sure it is. Anyone know what's going on?

Here's a more detailed description of what's happening.
After upgrading to 10.5.1, my iChat will load automatically at random times. It will even wake the computer out of sleep to load it. I was really frustrated that this was happening, and believing it was from having upgraded from 10.4, I decided to format my computer. After a clean wipe and updating to 10.5.1, iChat again is loading by itself randomly. I can quit iChat and go away for 30 minutes, come back, and it's launched again.
I have noticed on occasion when my iPhone is connected via the USB port that when it receives an e-mail it has been prone to launching iTunes and iChat, so this problem might be inter-related. However, I can have my iPhone disconnected and iChat will still load by itself. In fact, I quit out of iChat this morning, came to work and loaded iChat here at the office and it said I was logged in at another location. It must have logged in again at home. It's never done this in any other OS version for me.

  • I purchased a powermac pro and it came with logic Pro 9 (but with out the additional suite of programs that comes with). How can I reregister or reinstall Logic Pro 9 to get those features?

I could really use some insight into this please also how many gigs of RAM should my power mac have it only has two right now and logic tends to glitch up majorly.

    My original question :
I purchased a powermac pro and it came with logic Pro 9 (but with out the additional suite of programs that comes with). How can I reregister or reinstall Logic Pro 9 to get those features?

  • How do I find the hardware specs? (iMAC, PowerMac G3 and PowerPC)

For starters I have never used a mac before
We have some iMACs, PowerMac G3s and PowerPCs in stock which have had their HDDs erased (zero'd) so there is no OS installed.
I need to find the CPU type/speed & RAM size
Is there a boot cd I can load to determine this?
I assume there is no BIOS feature like in PCs where the hardware is listed?
    Many thanks
    Paul

A "boot CD" for a Mac is the Mac OS X installation disc that comes with it. You obviously don't have that... Mac's should always be sold with its original discs, but that's a pipe dream, I suppose.
The next best thing is a retail Mac OS X installation disc. These are the discs Apple sells "in a box" to owners of existing Macs in order to upgrade to the latest OS release. If you get one for Panther (10.3) or Tiger (10.4), startup from it by holding down the C key. When you get to the first Installer screen, go to the Apple menu and select +About This Mac+. That will tell you processor type, processor speed, and amount of RAM installed.
Make sure it's a retail disc. They are black with a silver X. Mac OS X installation discs that came with a particular Mac model (usually gray color) will usually not work on other models.
The current OS release, Leopard (10.5), would not be a good choice for this purpose because many G4 and below Macs cannot run it.
Tiger will work on all PowerPC Macs that originally had a G4 and have at least 256mb of RAM. It will also work on slot-loader G3 iMac (not tray-loaders), Blue and White Power Mac G3 (not beige), PowerBook G3 (only the model with FireWire) - not earlier G3 models.
Panther will work on all PowerPC Macs that originally had a G4 and most G3's that have at least 128mb of RAM, so it may be the best choice for this purpose.
There are some G3 Macs that need to have a firmware upgrade before running Mac OS X (even the installer) for the first time. This is particularly harmful to slot-loading G3 iMacs.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395
If most of the Macs have a FireWire port, and you have an external FireWire drive, you should install either Panther or Tiger on that drive. Then you can boot each Mac from that external FireWire drive and run System Profiler to get more detailed information about the system. Mac OS X installations are generalized, so as long as a PowerPC Mac ran the installation, it should work with supported PowerPC Macs. Some Macs do not have FireWire. USB external drives are not bootable on most PowerPC Macs.

  • After updating to SL10.6.8 dock crashes and unable to click after sleep

This is a strange problem that I noticed the other day.
Whenever I open the lid of the Macbook (Intel Core 2 Duo) and it awakens from its sleep I can no longer click on anything and the dock disappears completely.
I can solve this by restarting, however this only seems to work 80% of the time.
I have only just updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Has anybody else had a similar problem?
    Many thanks

  • I have a new MacBook Pro Mid 2012 and it goes into deep sleep when I disconnect if from AC power.

I have a new 13" MacBook Pro mid 2012 and it goes into deep sleep when it is disconnected from AC power.  I have to press the power button to wake it up.  Is this a known issue or is there something wrong with the MacBook Pro?

There are a few threads about this around. Its a known issue for 2012 non retina users, not sure about Apple. It should not work this way and Apple has not put out an update to fix it yet. Check out these threads for some workarounds. I think I saw if you reinstall and don't update one of the updates you get normal functionality back. Otherwise there are some terminal changes you can make to make it operate mostly normally. I made some changes in terminal.

  • Mid-2011 i7. iMac and USB shuts down on sleep

Just got a refurb i7 21" and am loving it. But I was having trouble with it shutting down when going to sleep and therefore not waking from sleep without a full boot up.
After finding this closed thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2258706?start=0&tstart=0), I wanted to confirm that unfortunately even after the Lion 10.7.2 update, some powered USB hubs (for example Newer Tech 7 port powered about 1 year old) still cause the iMac to shut down on sleep.
A new Belkin 7 port powered ("high speed for 2.0 or 1.1 devices") does the trick and now the iMac will wake from sleep properly and not shut down.
Just wanted to pass this on to others who might be having trouble and wondering if their motherboard is fried or something.
Also, if a USB port stops working, do an SMC reset (unplug, hold power button down).

Mostly it happens when there is no open software and it's in the sleep mode (because it spends more time like that), but it has happened while I'm working. It just suddenly quits.

This is a suspicious sign of power supply failure. I would have that checked into. Others who have had similar problems have had the power supplies replaced which fixed the issue.

Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available.
Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If there's sufficient disk space, the startup disk may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
You will need your install disc if the startup disk needs repairing.

I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when using USB external drives.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

It is not clear if these are the same drives, just connected
    differently, or different drives?
One thing that may be happening is that the drives firmware
itself is putting it to sleep when inactive.  Many drives on
the market have ths feature and it is turned on by default
and require a drive utility from the manufacturer to disable it.
