PowerMac G3 display

I got an old PowerMac G3 B&W from a friend and it came with the matching Apple Studio CRT with VGA output. The problem I am having is getting the tower hooked into a display, it has onboard Svideo and the ATI Rage card has the Apple display port input. Is there a way I can use the svideo to get the computer to boot up and display on my TV? Im trying to use the machine as networked file storage for my MacBook

External Display Incompatibility

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard (all software updates completed-10.6.1), and ever since, my external display (22" LG Flatron W2252TG) has been looping in and out of power saving mode. I am using a vga cord with a mini displayport to vga adaptor, and a late 2008 macbook (first version of unibody macbooks).
If I have the display plugged into a power outlet, and the vga cable plugged into the display, the screen says "check signal cable"...makes sense. However, when I attach the mini displayport adaptor (Firmware 1.0.3 or 1.3, I'm not quite sure), to the other end of the vga cable, the screen immediately says entering power saving mode. However, it never actually goes into it. It just turns the bulb display off (but the power light is still on), and then comes back to the message about going into power saving mode, and keeps looping.
The monitor works fine on any computer that doesn't require the mini displayport to vga adaptor, so I'm sure it's not the vga cable.
Also, I have tried all combinations of connecting the screen. I booted it in clamshell mode, not in clamshell mode, and attaching the screen after boot.
My only guess is that there is some incompatibility between snow leopard and the mini displayport to vga adaptor. Is anyone else having this issue? I called AppleCare and they of course blamed it on the monitor, but it works fine in several other computers (as long as the adaptor doesn't have to be used).

I'm using MacBook White (Mid 2007) and external Samsung SyncMaster 205BW (at least I've been using…). My external display is connected via DVI and MiniDVI to DVI adapter.
The symptoms are the same.

PowerMac G5 & Display starts but after the grey Apple logo screen dies

When I turn on my PowerMac G5 it turns on OK along with the LCD display. But once the Apple logo and the spinning gear shows up (by the way the gear gets all pixelated and turns blue) the LCD display suddenly goes black as if it goes to sleep. The PowerMac is still running though but it's not responsive. I even tried opening the DVD drive with the keyboard and nothing happens. I took someone's advice of rebooting in Safe Mode and everything works OK for now. When I try rebooting in normal mode the problem persists.
What could be the problem? Is this a hardware issue? I even tried with another display and same thing happens.
Sad thing is my 3 yr. Apple Care expired a few months ago, never ever used it.

Second time I've heard of display problems and 10.5.5., but it might be coincidental. For the other poster starting up in safe mode also helped but didn't cure his problem. Maybe taking out and reinstalling the video card would bring your mac back to its senses again.

I was looking for some display preference to be trashed but there were so darn many of them I couldn't figure out what the right one might be. In case I missed it, have you tried resetting your PRAM?

Mercury Acceleration and display incompatibility problems when rendering

I recently upgrade my monitor to a Dell U2312HM. Since that time I keep receiving the following error message:
"The NVIDIA OpenGL driver detected a problem with the display driver and is unable to continue. The application must close."
"Error code:3"
another error also pops up as well:
"Display driver stopped reponding and has recovered."
"Display driver NVIDIA Windows kernel Mode Driver, Version 306.97 stopped responding and has successfully revovered."
This always occurs when trying to render an export file in Media Encoder and occasionally when rendering from and working on the timeline in PProCS6.
This does NOT appear to happen if I turn off Mercury GPU acceleration.
All drivers have been updated, and all potentially problematic software have been unistalled to see if they are the problem.
I have a nVidia FX 3800 Quadro card running in a Windows 7 64 system with an i7-970 hexacore CPU and 24GB ram. I also use a Wacom 1200WX as a second monitor.
The whole point of having a CUDA card is to accelerate rendering. I love my new monitor, but I have to be able to use my CS6 software.
Any ideas how to fix this?

That appears to have worked. I had to download a different beta driver, but it seems to have done the trick.

Facebook games 'FarmTown' & 'FarmVille' won't run. Flash 10 will not install and displays "incompatibility" with FFox

The games Farm Town and FarmVille partially load on Facebook. The message to update Flash Player is displayed. I clicked to update Flash player, but it would not install. A message displayed saying Flash 10 is incompatible with FireFox and would not install until FireFox was shut down.

I have Windows XP.
In regards to my blank white page, the flash is now working again (Whether I needed to restart again or if it was a site thing).
And I'm not sure how to go about changing my display resolution with the browser, or know where to find it for that matter. Of course there's the one you can find in the control panel/display for the whole computer in general, but that doesn't do anything except make everything larger (Since I originally had it on the highest: 1024 x 768 pixels) and doesn't change the resize compatability for flash player at all.
Above is a screen shot of the jigsaw site I use (which is not the worst game resizing issue I've run into.) On the left side of the flash window, there are options to choose during game play, and the last option gets cut in half b/c the window won't resize correctly. And I haven't any idea if there are more options below it or not.
Below is one of the worst resizing issues I HAVE run into. I don't play farmville anymore since this problem, among it being boring, makes it literally impossible to play the game. I brought up the marketplace option since it's the most drastic. This is all of the flash game window, which would resize anything normally on my other computers, but the images get cut off along the sides with this one. I have tried playing this game on its home site, hoping that facebook was the problem, but it's the same issue there as well.

23" Apple vs Dell 2405FPW

Hey, i am in the market for a new powermac sometime soon, and i was recomended a 2405FPW instead of a 23" cinema display. Im not good with specs of monitors and don't understand them. Im in the UK and i was told the Dell is cheaper, to order a apple display with a powermac would cost £850, but a dell is £950, am i in the wrong place? Also how much better is the dell then the apple (if it is?) and what graphics card would i need to run that and games such as COD and doom?

thank you, seems you americans have it lucky, the exchange rate on apple products means we get ripped off here as well, they charge us more. But being a apple person i would most likely have to opt for a 30" ACD, i won't need any perfect colour match or anything as im not a big photographer, just photographs of friends and family and events for myself. I won't be able to order my powermac under september mainly because i won't have the income until then (being a student) so you never know, intel powermacs and displays with built in iSight maybe (no hopes up though, props happen week after pruchase knowing my luck)

IBook questions from a total noob.

Well, greetings to all of you! I am the most proud owner of an iBook "Snow" Dual USB, 500 mhz, 320mb RAM, 10gb HDD. I won this on eBay 3 weeks ago for $15 with a supposedly dead HDD and since it was local there was no shipping charges! Since I'm actually using it to type this, the hard drive is in fact fine, a bit small but fine. There is no Airport Card, but I see from the antenna it is possible to put one in there. Anyway, my question has probably been asked a billion times, but from what I read nobody has an explanation just a simple "No". Obviously I want to upgrade the Hard Drive, BUT, if I'm going to be in there anyway I want to put a combo drive in. However, I've seen 700-900mhz Logic Boards on eBay, not cheap but not outrageous either. I want to swap out the old 500mhz one with a 700-900mhz replacement. The Form factor is the same, all the screw holes are identical, other then the possible display incompatibility I see no reason why it can't be done. Please, explain to me, in vast detail, why this cannot be done and cannot work. Other then the amount of time....I see no issues. Thank you for your' time, I look forward to the responses! =^)

See now we're getting somewhere, obviously there's more to it then just swapping out the Logic Board and having it just work. Yet apparently it can be done. Of course, it would seem to be more of an annoyance then it is worth, but I figured to try and squeeze a bit more juice from this apple...ha ha ha. I had figured if I was going to have it apart to put in a replacement Hard Drive, then why not just go ahead and go for the full monty, right? I suppose a stick of 512mb RAM and a larger, faster spinning hard drive will be all I'll be doing to this machine. The simple fact that I only paid $15 for the unit and $35.00 for the OS X 10.3 Panther CD's and it works has me thrilled, really! It is my first Apple computer and I love being able to mess around with it, but I'm quickly becoming aware of the severity of it's limitations. Many of the applications I see require either OS X 10.4 Tiger, or it'll work with Panther but I need a G4 800mhz cpu....etc, etc, etc. I guess it's hard to take on the world when one is only 3 feet tall, figuratively speaking. But I'm glad to have an Apple computer and I'm only sorry I wasted so much time with Windows PC's and that I shelled out for Crappy VISTA and went back to XP!!!! Grrr.

Remote Desktop or KVM????

I have a G5 Powermac with display sat next to a 15" imac flatscreen. Don't really want two keyboards and two mice. What is the best way to control the imac, with a KVM switch (seems overkill for merely two usb ports), a usb switch (has anyone got one working?) or something like Remote Desktop (expensive and I don't need to see the imac desktop on the powermac). Any ideas, comments or suggestions?

It depends on what your priorities are.
If you're trying to save desktop real estate then you could use a KVM to switch between the PowerMac and the iMac screens (using the iMac's video mirroring to display its screen on an external monitor).
This would work well if you use both machines equally, but only one at a time.
On the other hand, if you use one machine more than the other you might find ARD an acceptable solution to control the other machine periodically. I wouldn't recommend this for 'normal' system usage, though, especially for anything detail-oriented or that is video-intensive (video, games, etc., etc.)
If you need to see both machines at the same time, though, then there isn't really a good option other than to have two keyboards, mice, etc. or use a KVM and just ignore the video option.

Ridiculous time out durations in sending mail

When sending messages from my MacBook Pro, Often the timeout for failed SMTP sending is ridiculously long... up to three minutes in many instances.
There is no cancel button anywhere, and no way I can determine to retrieve the message to try another server.
Most often when the failed in sending window finally appears, I can select the SAME server, and it goes straight away.
My iMac and my G4 Powermac never display this behaviour and are all using the same versions of leopard for OS and mail. And, are connected to the same wireless network profiles using Time Capsule.
1) Is there a way to adjust the time out settings for SMTP? I cannot seem to find that setting anywhere.
2) When setting up an new SMTP server, I notice that it still takes an intetminable duration to verify the server(s) this is frustrating when I am constantly setting up several SMTP accounts on new system.
Maybe these two issues are related?

The option is only great if it actually works. It's just a way to start the troubleshooting. If it doesn't make any difference, then it won't be used and the only pain will be to delete the numbers.
If it works, then there may be other answers like putting the numbers into the router. I'm not sure what you will have to do if you don't have access to the routers configuration...
Maybe it won't work at all, and we try something else. I worry about the next problem after I fix the one I'm on.
The ISP's I've been working with are getting more strict with their smtp servers all the time. They're changing the settings and putting in so many port restrictions that webmail, gmail, livemail etc are becoming the only choice when traveling. 10 years ago I bought my own domain so that I can control my mail server and don't worry about quota's or ports.

Airport Admin utility doesn't find basestation

Hi. I'm having a problem where the Airport Admin Utility doesn't list my basestation on my PowerMac G5. The Admin Utility on the PowerMac G4 displays it fine.
However, I can access the basestation from the G5 in Airport Admin Utility by clicking "other" and manually entering the ip address of the basestation. And I have no problem accessing the internet or the network from either machine.
I'm using a 802.11b card in the G4 and I have the newer "g" card in the G5.
Any ideas?

This doesn't completely answer my question. It only mentions that Airport Setup Assistant no longer supports legacy basestations under OS X tiger 10.4.
It doesn't mention about the Airport Admin utility. Which is what doesn't show/display/list the basestation in the select basestation window. Yet I have no problem using the internet.
I can't believe Apple would completely abandon Airport Snow & Graphite basestation users. Is this true? Although My "Snow" basestation is about 4 years old it still chugs along adequately for my needs.
Any other ideas?
BTW... All my Macs are running 10.4.6 (the latest) so I would think my results should be the same on all Macs.

Screen Real Estate not being used

Dont know if this is software or hardware question - I just got a new bigger monitor for my Powermac. Display resolution is now 1600x1200.
Problem is whenever I put a new item onto the desktop, it stacks on top of another item thats already there (the one in the bottom right corner), even though I have over half of the desktop space empty!
Not a huge huge deal but just thnking it must be a simple fix!?

Indeed. Everything except 2880x1800, which is unavailable without SwitchResX, and 1440x900, which comfortably fits one pixel of the image into a four pixel square of the Retina Display, must be simulated or scaled. However, while the scaling is real, the 17" "simulation" looks as good, to my eye at least, as my wife's MBP 17". Going smaller will test one's eyes probably as much as Apple's scaling algorithms so the tradeoff for greater screen real-estate may turn out not to be as bad as we'd think. All I need is a MBP Retina Display and SwitchResX to find out...

How to connect a PowerMac G3 (VGA) to a Cinema Display (DVI)

I've just bought a used PowerMac G3 on ebay. I already have a Cinema Display 20'' with DVI input only. So the problem is that the G3 only has VGA output. I now bought an adapter which totally fits: So I now can connect the G3 with the Cinema Display. However, I can't see anything on screen.
I read somewhere this is because the Cinema Display needs digital DVI signal input.
Please, is there any way to connect my Cinema Display with this VGA PowerMac G3?

It seems that really is what I was searching for. Except the fact that we're talking about a price range, where I can get another display with VGA für my G3. Mh so well, before buying the 700 dollar converter I could rather buy a big mac mini and would even have more performance for a smaller price...
However thank you again. I now know there is a solution although it is not very cheap and there may be more affordable ones.

Connect PowerMac G5 to iMac via Mini Display

I am trying to connect my old PowerMac G5 to my mid 2011 iMac. There is a dual DVI card in the back, and a small cord connects to DVI and Converts to VGA. So here is my question, can I order a male VGA cable and connect that to an adapter that connects VGA to mini display? Also, how do I display the PowerMac G5 on my iMac?

Setting up Screen Sharing & Control, allow the G5 to be used in G5>Sys Prefs>Sharing, then on the iMac>Finder>Connect to Server.
