PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 - Red Circle w/ Line Then Shut Down

Hi all,
Just floating this question on the forum after some fruitless research.  This is my friend's issue, and I wasn't personally there for it.  I just type WAY faster than he does.
Here's his setup:
Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz w/ 8 GB RAM
OS 10.5.8
500 GB WD Caviar Black Hard Drive
It's his Pro Tools rig (PT TDM HD3 7.4.2)
I assisted him in upgrading from Safari 4.x to Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard last weekend to resolve a possible issue he had with one site.  I used that universal download that works on both PPC and Intel.  The install went well, and the lovely green check mark came up.  Had to force quit the installer before shutting down for the night for some reason.  Other than that, it's been running for several days (with both starting up and shutting down each day) without a hitch until today.
He was running a nothing Pro Tools session, when suddenly, in his words, he saw a red circle with a line through it, the screen went black, and the Mac powered down.  He said some choice words, started the Mac back up, and all seemed well.  Booted fine, and he finished his session without further incident.  He did say he had Safari open in the background, so I don't find it coincidental this is giving him grief mere days after a version upgrade.
After some research, I found several posts about a red circle with a line through it during STARTUP, but not while the system is fully booted up and running.  Like I mentioned before, this is in his words, so I don't know if the system hard rebooted, had issues accessing the hard drive giving that red circle/line, and then shut down.  Then, when he booted it, it went back to normal.  Just guessing at this point.  He has many external firewire hard drives hooked up, plus all the Pro Tools cards with I/O units attached, wireless mouse.  God only knows what caused it.
I wonder if maybe he had some kind of wacked out power brown out, and the system just had a temporary coniption fit.
Anybody know of anything I can do or suggest to him to possibly begin to troubleshoot this?  Intermittent problems are a pain.  I might try having him go into Safe Mode and then reboot.  Any other ideas??

Well, it couldn't writeto something big time, no idea what.
Open Console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & next startup for clues.

  • Cannot send some attachments or pictures red circle with line (FIXED)

After three weeks working with support on an escalated ticket to find the resolution on some obscure site relating to something not specifically "Blackberry" I figured I should share.
    Problem:
Cannot send attachments larger than... Not sure of specifics but well bellow our Exchange Max settings.
Cannot send pictures as attachments. or forward some emails with embeded images
Both cases would result in a red circle with a horizontal bar.
    Our environment:
    Exchange 2010
    IIS 6.0
Blackberry (All up to date) devices connected to BDS
After 3 weeks of sending logs and trying settings here is what I found on the internet:

    http://www.iis.net/configreference/system.webserver/serverruntime
I will let you read the above but essentially the data BDS is trying to push through IIS is too large for the cache (from what I can tell). Finally here are the changes I made to our IIS applicationhost.config file (copy paste to the bottom bellow the last tag). I am certain the number is still very high but I want to make sure there is no more issues. I have enough users wanting to jump ship already, I don't want more.

I don't 100% know because we run all roles on one Exchange server.
I referred to Exchange server in my previous post presuming you were running the CAS role on the Exchange server. If you have that running on another server, I would change it on there as well.
Again, I can't see it doing any harm even if it isn't required!

  • Unit totally locked up.  now get startup sound and blank screen with red circle with line thru it.

My Macbook is about 4 years oId. I was doing an Excel spreadsheet(apple office suite), went for a short break, on first keystroke the unit totally locked up with the spinning beachball. My mouse could move that around but that was all it could do. After about 4 minutes, needed to force quit it by holding down start up button. let it sit for a couple of minutes and then tried to restart it. I now get the start up chime followed after a short spell with a grey screen with a red circle with a red line though it right in the middle of the screen. tried about 3 more times with the same result. I hope it isn't dead because my project was about 95% complete and just about ready to print.
Any ideas how to revive the ol' girl?

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately more serious then that. took unit to the apple repair techies and needed to replace hard drive. It had a total catastrophic failure and none of the info was recoverable That is a bummer as my last project was quite time consuming and almost complete. Good news I guess is I now have a much larger hard drive memory. Also had them put in much more RAM so now she is purring like a kitten again and a lot faster. Hopefully it will be a while before the swirling beachball of death appears. Thanks again for trying to help.

  • G4-450 dual back from repair shop: new power suply shuts down on its own!

    Hi
My G4 450 Dual died on me a few months ago, i went to a Apple authorized repair place and was charged over 200 euros+ for a new Power Supply, Obviously they never tested the computer at all before installing it, i know this because when i took it home it started shutting down by itself.
When i took it back to the guys at the shop i was told that it was on all night and it does not shut down, but yet the firewire bus was dead and its due possibly to the logic board and would need to be replaced!
They tell me this after they installed a power suply and charged me money when i asked them to give me a estimate first, now i dont want the pwoersupply all together, do i have the right for my money back for the power supply, i agreed to pay them to test it for the charges of a hour.
    please advise anyone..

You are definitly entitled to your money back, they sound like cowboys...

  • Dual 2 GHz (10.3.9) won't shut down

Greetings! My G5 here at work will not shut down properly anymore. My first clue something was wrong was that the menu bar clock had stopped hours ago. I trashed the menu clock prefs, and the clock works better now, but yesterday at the end of the day it would not shut down again. I have to do a hard shutdown via the power button, and I am sure that's not healthy.
Dual 2 GHz running OS 10.3.9 with 2 gigs or RAM. The only third party app I run is Default Folder. I have repaired permissions via the install CD. This is a pretty stock machine running a variety of graphic software packages.
One odd thing I saw in Console: "SCSIAction: unimplemented" is a message that repeats about a bizzillion times in the log. What is that?!
    Thanks for any clues here!

Never mind... Extensis Suitcase was the culprit. I pretty much have to force quit Suitcase before shutting down. I hate font management.... grrr

  • Powermac G5 shuts down frequently

I have a dual 2.3GHz G5 that has been been shutting down during normal use. I have come to think it may be related to audio hardware, as it frequently occurs when I try to start iTunes, Audacity(audio editor) and it seems to happen randomly while viewing web pages with embedded audio and video files. I reset the PRAM yesterday and the computer shut down on my first attempt to launch iTunes after the restart. I have the system profiler log that I ran after that. The line in that system.log section of the report that caught my attention was:
    2006 Nov 15 21:17:23 localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Walter

    dual G5 2.3 powermac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This is a common problem that Apple have not addressed. It seems people starting having this problem after update 10.4.7 onwards - and frequents with iTunes/Audio use.
So yes, it's a software issue. BUT on the other hand, some folk have had their hardware replaced and the shutdowns have stopped.
    check out this thread-
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3525756#3525756
    and this site-
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/DualCore_G5Shutdowns.html
Basically, there is NO solution yet, just alot of guessing and crossed fingers.
If you call Apple support, they're pretty clueless - you'll go through the normal round of questions and then be told your power supply needs replacing.

  • My iphone 6 flashes red then shuts off

My iphone 6 will flash a red screen then shut down. When i try to turn it back on it will flash the logo a few times. what is going on? what do i need to do to get it fixed?

Does it still charge? If yes, let it charge for at least 10min, then connect in recovery mode, explained in this article:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
If this does not work, contact Apple Support to get it checked:

  • Dual boot computer restarts by itself shortly after it has been shut down or put into sleep mode

    Hello,
I have Toshiba Equium L40-14I (old) and dual boot Vista and Linux.
A few days ago I noticed that while in a Linux operating system and when I put it to sleep (suspend) it would do so, but then immediately come alive again. The same thing happens with the shut down option. In Windows Vista it is the same. It does shut down, but in a few seconds restarts again and shows the normal options of choosing which operating system I want to boot. The computer only stays shut if I pull the power cord (it has no functioning battery) or it I forcefully shut it by pressing the power button for a few seconds.
    So far I tried this:
    - BIOS: 1. Changed to default factory settings. 2. Disabled wake-up on LAN and disabled wake up on keyboard.
    - Device Manager, Network adapters, NIC, Properties, Power management: unticked the option that allows the adapter to wake the computer
    - Device Manager: all drivers seem to be ok
    - Virus scan: although this is probably not the issue as it happens independently of which operating system I am using. I have not installed any strange programs.
    - I started from the Safe mode and then shut down. Same thing happened: it restarted automatically after a few seconds.
    - Disabled automatic restart on system failure. It didn't help.
English is not my first language, sorry for the perhaps unclear way of describing this issue. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

You have done just about everything I can think of.  You didn't mention doing a System Restore.  If you haven't done one or even if you have, do a System Restore back to at least sometime before this started happening. If the first one doesn't work, try a different restore point and do it again. If that doesn't work, you need to consider a full HDD recovery to out-of-box condition which procedure is fully covered in your User's Guide.  I'm sorry I don't have a link for it but yours is not a U.S. machine and this site is for U.S. machines. It appears to be a U.K. model with support covered by THIS site.
BTW, I wish the native Americans who post on here did  as well as you have so you have to make no excuses for your English.

Remove the metal side panel. When you press the power button, do you see anything happen? Does the power light flash at all? Do you see a red light on the logic board?

  • Thermal issues with PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 Processor

I've been having issues with my fans running super loud for no apparent reason. I have been told that my thermal meter for one of my processors has gone bad and that I have to replace both my processors at a cost of over $800! I am simply wondering if there has been any other issues even similar to this one or if anyone can tell me if I really do have to have both processors replaced for this situation. Also, I am wondering if anyone knows how to run the processor diagnostic where I can view my computers feedback for myself.
I am a starving designer and desperate to fix my biggest tool. Please let me know of any possible suggestions or cheap fixxes. If there is no way around replacing both processors, please let me know of any good mac processor retailers! Thanx all!

You can check the temps and fans with

Who has told you what the problem is? Has the G5 been in the shop?
Is there a pattern to the loud fan noise?
Is there a red light on inside?
    How warm is the room?
Is there a dust build-up inside the G5?

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 fan problem

I just bought a Powermac G5 dual 2.0 (June 2004) with 4GB (aftermarket) RAM on eBay that has the 'constant on' fan problem. I have run every series of tests and tricks that I found on the internet and it is still stuck. The machine runs flawlessly, all benchmark tests that I have performed have been completed successfully. In addition, I have done the following:
The door/deflector sensors are working properly, no red LED on the board
I ran all of the OF and OSX ASD 2.5.7 tests on it and they came back clean.
I reset the PRAM, the SMU, PMU and did the NVRAM resets in OF.
    I repaired the disk permissions
    I reseated the video card
The machine is spotlessly clean inside
All temperature sensors are functioning properly, and the Dashboard thermal readouts I downloaded show the temps are well within normal parameters.
I zeroed the HD and installed a fresh copy of OSX10.5
Nothing I have done has affected the problem at all... Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I can try to solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Joe

I'm sorry nothing worked. I should have known you would have tried those things. The thing about tiger and fan issues I heard about just a few days ago. You saw which versions were fixed and unfixed though right? Right. Reduced power does nothing too I guess. And turning off sleep. It just doesn't sound like the Jet Sounds that other users have reported regarding their fans and sleep or where the fans go into Panic mode to cool the CPU Temps. Speaking of which I recommend Temperature Monitor to see just what temps you're running at. If they are too high that might be the one explanation.
And one wise Mac forum guru from Japan said something to the effect that most fan issues had something to do with USB problems. I hope he'll chime in, he's very good.
What else... false sensor readings? I have no clue as to where they really are to fix.
I sympathize because I've had fan problems of my own since I bought this mac used about two years ago. Loud revving up and down on Highest power setting... sounds like a demented banshee. Luckily I can just run on reduced power and it keeps the worst at bay.
The Mac I had before this one was a Dual 2.0 like yours. It was a rock solid performer for several years before I put leopard on it. Within a week it was dead as a doornail.
Well I think I've exhausted my ideas on this one. I'll keep thinking about it though. Oh, two more. The first, some kind of cool enclosure that muffles the sound without killing your Mac. The second, and what would be my preferred method if I was rich, would involve a very large hammer and...
Anyway, I really hope you solve this, Joe. If you do, post back and let me know how you did it.
Ack, looking back at your original post I see you already did some of the things above. Sorry, it's late and I'm too tired to edit.
Ok, one last thing I don't think you said but just occurred to me. Have you looked under the cpu cover to see if anything is amiss there?
That's it, I'm spent for now.
    Good luck.
    Steve

  • When I try to sync my iPhone 4s it no longer works.  I have a bunch of songs that now show up on my iPhone with a red circle with a box inside of it and they won't play, yet I can find them and play them on my Mac.  What do I do?

My iphone 4s will no longer sync music from my music library on my Macbook Pro.  I also have a bunch of songs that now have a red circle with a box in it next to the song on my phone and those songs will not play.  They are present in my itunes library and I can play them on my Mac but they will not play on my iphone.  I have tried unchecking all the music and applying those changes and syncing and it does nothing.  All the same music remains on my phone, unchanged.  Help! What do I do? I have read to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it but will I lose all my music?

    Hello Courtney,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when syncing your music to your iPhone.  It sounds like iTunes is not able to locate the original file for the song to transfer it to your device.  I recommend reviewing the following articles to locate you music files on your computer:

  • Is there a way to use Premiere Pro CC's new mask tracking with a red circle around someone?

I know how to do the face blurring, but just wondering if there is a way to put a red circle around someone or something and track it using the new mask tracking on Premiere Pro CC?
    Many thanks in advance!

Yes this is the fix.  I was getting frustrated over this issue.  I use Dreamweaver across two minitors and the palette locations were resetting back to the main monitior where the app was.  This unchecking and a quick log out and back in fixes the issue.  Thank you!
