Powermac G5 dual 2.5GHz won't boot

Hi,
I've recently started having issues with my dual 2.5GHz G5 Powermac. When I switch it on I can hear the drives start up and data being read from them. But there's never any chime and the screen stays black. The drives stay quiet (spinning but no data being read). After a minute or two the fans ramp up to full speed.
If I leave it off for a while (eg. overnight) it resolves itself somehow and boots up without any issues. Once it's booted up there are no issues at all and it will run fine for weeks and days, until it needs to be rebooted again. I just put it to sleep when I'm not using it and it wakes up fine.
I've tried the following without any success:
- unplugging all peripherals (usb + firewire etc)
- reseating the ram
- swapping out the ram
- trying to boot into open firmware (it won't get that far)
- resetting the pmu with the button on the motherboard
- installed the latest updates to os x
- reseated the graphics card
- replaced the battery on the motherboard with a brand new one
This started roundabout the time I upgraded to 10.5.5 though that could be a coincidence. I also cleaned dust from the inside of the machine at that time as well (including off the graphics card fan and heatsink which was getting clogged up). So, that may have caused it. But again it could just be a coincidence.
Does anyone have any suggestions? All fans and both fans spin up, so I don't think it's the PSU, but I could be wrong. My only thought at the moment is a possible problem with one of the drives. So, I could try installing to a firewire drive and booting from that, but given that I can't even get into openfirmare, I'm not confident in that working. Similarly I don't have much hope of it booting from CD.
Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated
Phil

Hi Phil Brayshaw-
What does the little white power light do? This should be helpful: About the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) diagnostic LEDs
Although it sounds to me like you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, this document is a good overall reference to address this particular problem: Power Mac G5: What to do if you see black, white, or no video at start up
Have you tried another monitor and/or double-checked your cable and its connections? If everything else is working as expected that would certainly be a major suspect.

  • Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows

I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
    -Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
    -Trying alternate video card
    -resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
    Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.
Thanks for your help and advice.
    Regards,
    Marcos

Someone here once thought they knew EFI and Open Firmware a little, and used some commands from OF library that an Intel EFI Apple system didn't like. New logicboard.
Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility.

  • PowerMac G4 Dual 1.25Ghz won't let me install updates to Leopard

Hi there.. I just bought a PowerMac G4 Dual 1.25Ghz and for some reason, I can't install Leopard through the DVD drive. I get an error saying something about <Base System> and when I did install it leopard by making the powermac a firewire drive, now I can't do any updates. I get a message that the file is corrupt and contact the software vendor. I tried doing a Repair Permission, but it wont do it and keeps going and going.... Has anyone had any issue like this?

First, did you install Leopard using a retail version installer. Using an installer from another Mac model won't work.
Second, is this the update file you tried to use? http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
It's best to download the update file & install off line, rather than use the auto update feature. Repair permissions before & after installing the update.

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz freezes any time, boots sometimes with one processor

Since two weeks I experience freezes at different up-and-runnng time. It could happen at grey startup screen (after a while fan goes wild), could be after some minutes working in a full booted user environment.
I run AHT several times, no error reported. When I took out all RAM except for Apple RAM, it still freezes at some time.
Now, by random, my machine starts sometime with only one processor and is stable for hours (only the fan runs higher and cpu load is most of the time near 100 percent). Activity shows one bar only, System Info says: Number of CPUs=1. I have no idea which processor runs and which "sleeps" deadly. iStat tells only about CPU A as having a temperature, the fans of CPU A run higher, but the fans of CPU B run also on a lower level.
The "U3 Heatsink" reads 65-70 degree Celsius. Is that (too) high?
Only once I got a kernel panic during verbose startup. It read:
"System failure: cpu=1; code =00000001 (corrupt stack)
    unalined fram address: 0x00000001"
I am tempted to shut down one CPU with Open Firmware command, but will it be the defect one? At least the machine is doing something regular then, but is slow...
    Any help is much welcome!
    Yours, Whoopy

My PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 also has this problem.
It all started one sad afternoon a month or so ago. I noticed that my computer was on and the fans were on full speed. As soon as I moved the mouse to shut it down, I got the wheel of death!
I had no choice but to do a force shutdown.
The next day, I turn my computer on and it just stayed on the gray screen with the dark gray apple, and no spinning thingy.
So once again, I had to force shutdown.
Pressing the 'Option' key did gave me the screen where one can select where to boot from; the main HD, booting CD, etc. but none of the worked.
When I chose to boot from my internal HD or from the restore CD it would just get stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo.
I pressed the PMU button = no change
I did a PRAM reset = it brought my G5 to life but then a few minutes later it froze and history repeated itself.
Did a PRAM reset again and this time didn't work.
Tried booting from my PowerBook G4 HD via firewire = frozen gray screen
When I pressed the 'T', i get the FireWire logo and I'm able to boot my G5's HD using my PowerBook G4. But when I put my G4 on firewire mode and try to boot my G5 by selecting the OS of the G4, I still get the frozen screen, so the problem is not with the HD.
One time I was able to boot my G5 from the 'Restoration CD' and I used the Utilities to Fix permisions, and repair the HD but still the computer would freeze and same old story.
Since I got this problem, It has work normal only 3 occasions but no longer than an hour until the fans go crazy and freezes.
I tried different memory sticks and no improvement.
My AppleCare expired on May, and my G5 went down 2 or 3 months after that.
This feels part of an strategy called "Get a(nother) Mac". Where comps are design to last just a little after AppleCare expires and then BOOM! no choice but to spend some serious cash on fixing it or use that money plus more to get one of the resent mac which have had some changes since one bought the mac that just went to apple heaven.
Anyways, I feel that the problem will be solved by replacing the two processors, heatsinks, or whatever they called it.
I took apart my G5 today and I'm not sure but it seems that the heatsinks might use some kind of gas to cools the CPUs or Chips and I think that gas is over.
Has anyone swap the heatsink units and noticed any difference?
Here's of the heatsink for the PPC G5 2.0

hi, i have late 2004 G5 dual 2.5 ppc and it won't boot, chime or show any video the only thing i get out of it is the cpu fans spool to 100% after a few minutes of power on time and the air is warm, I have tried to power it with no ram to see if there are going to be multiple chimes for missing ram notifications but to no avail, the bott with option key pressed produces no post, can it be saved with in resonalbe cost or have any sugestions, Help.

    Hello,
Cheapest thing to try first is...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

Remove the metal side panel. When you press the power button, do you see anything happen? Does the power light flash at all? Do you see a red light on the logic board?

  • Powermac Dual 2Ghz G5 won't boot

    Hello
I've had my powermac since December 2003. The other day, when I went to turn it on, the fans and HDDs started, but the display stayed blank and the LED blinks 3 times, then a pause, then blinks 3 times etc.
I have tried disconnecting everything, including the power for an hour or more.
I've read that it can be anything from a faulty graphics card, to bad RAM, to a bad logic board. I've never had a problem with the computer before, and I haven't changed the specification for 2 years.
I took out the extra Crucial RAM, but it didn't fix it. I also tried the extra Crucial RAM without the original RAM, but it still didn't fix it.
The computer is connected to a 20" Apple Cinema Display (ADC connector).
It's odd that the computer has just stopped working suddenly. The problem seemed to have started after installing 10.4.10 update... but I think that's just a coincidence.
I don't think it's worth paying £100 for a new graphics card when that might not be the problem. Same goes for a £450 logic board.
Are then any other possibilities of what the problem could be?

It must be a conspiracy because I am fighting this same issue on an original 2003 2Ghz G5 and it started yesterday.
The computer just froze while my wife was using Safari and listening to iTunes. Not a heavy load. The last system update to 10.4.10 was when it came out.
I had 8 dimms installed for a total of 4.5 G. The last new pair was a couple of years ago. I have removed the Ram a pair at a time and tried rebooting between each pair. I have tried each pair individually in the first slot. Nothing. All the memory is suddenly bad.
    I replaced the CPU battery.
    I have reset the PMU.
I have replaced the video card with the original video card.
I can't run diagnostics as it can't be booted in anyway without memory.
All of the memory has gone bad simulateously or the motherboard is fried!!!!!
It must have an expiration date if it happened to you as well????

  • Dual-Core G5 won't boot. Flashing Red Light.

Hey Guys, I've got a 2Ghz Dual-Core G5. It's stock other than 2gigs of ram and a SATA Seagate Barracuda in the second drive bay.
Every now and then (on a fairly regular basis) I'll try to boot up the computer, I do hear the fans going but the drives don't spin up as usual, there is no chime and I get a red light behind the front panel of the G5 flashing. It flashes 7 times. After the 7 flashes it just sits there and after about a minute the fans go into airplane taking off mode.
I've been on the phone with AppleCare twice. A PMU reset did (possibly coincidentally) bring the computer back once or twice but has proven ineffective since. Typically I can either try booting the computer 30 times and it eventually works or I'll just leave it alone for a couple hours and it will boot up when I try again.
Resetting the PRAM doesn't work nor does holding option on boot up. This says (at least) to me that the computer doesn't get far enough to even look at the OS, the fault seems to be a hardware issue. The keyboard and mouse never get buss power.
Anyway, as I said it'll usually work eventually but I haven't been able to get the G5 to boot at all for the past 5 hours. Anyone had any similar experience? At this point I'm thinking bad logic board? Any opinions?
    Thanks!
    2Ghz Dual-Core G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Presumably it is one of the red LEDs shown here that is flashing
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302527
The symptoms possibly don't qualify for this - but maybe with some persuasion...
    http://www.apple.com/support/powermac/powersupply/repairextension/
You could try the Apple Hardware Test
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html
    or TechTool

Presumably AppleCare suggested you take it in to the shop...?

  • Dual 1.25Ghz won't boot?  Just happened!?

Hello, and thanks in advance for any feedback.
I have a Dual 1.25Ghz G4 with 4 HDs in it. I had it running earlier this morning and decided to pull the smaller (and older drive). I turned it off, unplugged everything, and pulled the drive. I closed the case and now it doesn't boot. I press the button and it lights up, but nothing happens. No powerup up, no power supply noise.. nothing.
So, thinking there was a slight chance my OS, or something, was on that older drive, I reinstalled it. Same thing.
What could have damaged upon opening the case?
    Thanks for your help!
    Justin

Hello! I'm assuming that the drives are jumpered correctly? Anytime you remove or add hardware you may have to reset the PMU. Press the button once with ALL external cables unhooked and then reconnect and restart. Tom

  • Dual 2.0GHZ won't boot, help?

I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHZ, I believe the first late 2004 model. It had 3.5GB's of RAM and an older model Apple Cinema display.
The problem is, is it just wont boot up. I turn the power on, the screen remains blank and the light flashes on the computer 3 times. I consulted the manual and it says that if the light flashes 3 times, the RAM is incompatible. However I took out all 8 sticks of RAM and tried each pair for a boot, but none of the pairs would but and I received the same 3 flashes. I should also add I tried resetting the PMU and it didn't solve the issue. It doesn't boot so resetting the PRAM also is a no go.
Everything powers on properly, so I'm don't think its the PSU, unless you know different. I'm not sure if all my RAM has died, if its the Power Supply or Perhaps the logical board has failed? Or maybe something else?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Any idea what might be charged to have someone to replace motherboard?
I'm having the above problems starting shortly after I installed Leopard. The Mac is unusable now and in the shop. I became concerned though after the Apple authorized Tech guy gave my machine a 20 minute lookover and didn't have a clue. Talk of motherboards and power supplies came up. I know both are expensive not counting labor.
I bought a used 2.7 ghz. G5 this morning. Maybe it's premature but at least I get a better machine that will be working, here in a few days.
I'm out cash but I struggled for days trying to figure my Macs problems out. The nightmare is over. For now...

  • PowerPC G5 Dual 2.5 won't boot

When I turn on the PowerMac, I get the gray screen with the folder and blinking question mark, but no spinning wheel. It just hangs on the screen. Thinking this was an issue with the hard drive, I replaced the hard drive and tried to install Leopard and it dvd would not play... I replaced the dvd drive from a working machine and it still wouldn't go. I tried to boot from external drive and it doesn't even see my external. After a few minutes, the fans turn on full blast. Here is everything I have tried:
    Replacing the Hard drive
    Re-seat RAM
Reset PMU (pressing button on logic board)
Tried booting to Open Firmware: reset-nvram, set-defaults and reset-all.
Tried booting into Safe Mode. Didn't work.
Tried going to the console (Cmd + Shift). Got into the console, but computer freezes before I can type anything.
I have a feeling that this is a problem with the logic board. However, without being able to boot from anything, I can't run any sort of hardware test. Please let me know any suggestions that I should try. Thanks.

Hi jest537, and a warm welcome to the forums!
If you have it, Boot off your original G5 Install Disk while holding down Option/alt key to select AHT, then run the extended Apple Hardware Test.

  • Powermac g5 (single 1.6Ghz) won't boot

Hi there, I have a mid-2003 powermac g5 that is refusing to boot. When I power it on, the fans spin, but the LED flashes continuously. I've tried the hairdryer thingy and that hasn't worked. I suspect the RAM is the problem, but I took one card out and tried to boot it, changing cards each time. This hasn't worked either. Also, when I power on the computer the display doesn't recognise it...
Please help, as I need to get this computer working soon!

Hello, the RAM needs to be in opposing Pairs, one stick will not work.
The fans speeding up is normal safety feature when no OS is running.
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Mac Mini (Core Solo 1.5GHz) won't boot.  Any ideas?

My Mac Mini is hanging when I try to boot up (just sits at the grey apple screen and the progress wheel just cycles indefinitely). I've tried booting into single user mode and running fsck and the disk is fine. If I try booting in verbose mode it seems to hang with an error pertaining to the AirPort card.
I've mounted it in target mode and backed up /Library and /Users in case a nuke&pave is required and have grabbed a copy of system.log to get the error messages. Here's the entire boot sequence up to the point where it hangs:

Anyone got any ideas how I can try to fix the problem? I don't actually use the AirPort card as it's wired into my router so if there's any way I can disable it that might be useful.
In the case of a nuke&pave is there anything else I should back up besides /Library and /Users?

    Fixed it!
I mounted it in target mode again and manually applied the 10.5.4 combo updater ad it now boots again.

  • PowerMac G5 DUAl 2.5Ghz and older ATA drives, HOW ?

    Hi everybody.
I have question maybe someone could help me with.
I now have a G5 Dual 2.5 and also 3 ATA133 drives from my old G4. I need to install the 3 ATA133 drives into my G5, but from what i have read someware, the G5 uses another system, right ? its not ATA133 anymore.
So how is the easyest way to get my 3 ATA133 drives to work indside the G5 ?
Do i need a ATA133 controller card (PCI) or something else, does the G5 have PCI at all ?
If somebody could help me out here, i would be very happy indeed.
    Thx a lot.
    Mugge

This depends on which model of dual 2.5 you have. The dual processor 2.5 has PCI slots. The dual core dual processor 2.5 (quad) has PCI-Express slots. Both G5 models use SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives so you do need a controller card to attach your ATA drives.
Apple doesn't support mounting more than two hard drives internally in the G5s so it might be easier to just get firewire cases for your hard drives and make them all external.

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 won't shut down

I recently installed leopard and when I try to shut down it just hangs...everything is gone (ie.Desktop, menubar) except for the desktop image and a small windmill thing(ie: some process animation)
There is nothing showing up with HW test. Also erased and reinstalled leopard with no third party devices, software, etc... Any idea where to start.
    Anyone else experience this?

Yes it is an Erase and install, and I've actually done this a few times for measure, zeroing the disk each time...I also allowed the OSX disk to be checked prior.
    I have repaired permissions...
    Theory 1:
I think it is related to .mac...I have old machine names in the shared section of finder that won't go away. I believe these machines were somehow uploaded to the .mac server and even though I have deauthorized all my .computers and reset .mac, etc...they still show up. .Mac support has been no help so far. I have posted about this specific issue in .mac and leopard forums, but have not been able to find a solution.
I don't feel like going into complete detail on this issue, but:
.Mac doesn't permit access to the files I need to erase, nor have I been successful in getting them to respond to my request to reset this data as it is clearly on their servers with no end user control...they also wouldn't transfer my account to a new trial .mac account(which they do for some) because I used a retail box to register.(I have been a user for years though
But I am not sure this issue is what is causing the shutdown problem, sorry for the vent session...
    Theory 2:
There is something else going on...What logs could I look at to help narrow it down?
