PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz freezes any time, boots sometimes with one processor

Since two weeks I experience freezes at different up-and-runnng time. It could happen at grey startup screen (after a while fan goes wild), could be after some minutes working in a full booted user environment.
I run AHT several times, no error reported. When I took out all RAM except for Apple RAM, it still freezes at some time.
Now, by random, my machine starts sometime with only one processor and is stable for hours (only the fan runs higher and cpu load is most of the time near 100 percent). Activity shows one bar only, System Info says: Number of CPUs=1. I have no idea which processor runs and which "sleeps" deadly. iStat tells only about CPU A as having a temperature, the fans of CPU A run higher, but the fans of CPU B run also on a lower level.
The "U3 Heatsink" reads 65-70 degree Celsius. Is that (too) high?
Only once I got a kernel panic during verbose startup. It read:
"System failure: cpu=1; code =00000001 (corrupt stack)
unalined fram address: 0x00000001"
I am tempted to shut down one CPU with Open Firmware command, but will it be the defect one? At least the machine is doing something regular then, but is slow...
Any help is much welcome!
Yours, Whoopy

My PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 also has this problem.
It all started one sad afternoon a month or so ago. I noticed that my computer was on and the fans were on full speed. As soon as I moved the mouse to shut it down, I got the wheel of death!
I had no choice but to do a force shutdown.
The next day, I turn my computer on and it just stayed on the gray screen with the dark gray apple, and no spinning thingy.
So once again, I had to force shutdown.
Pressing the 'Option' key did gave me the screen where one can select where to boot from; the main HD, booting CD, etc. but none of the worked.
When I chose to boot from my internal HD or from the restore CD it would just get stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo.
I pressed the PMU button = no change
I did a PRAM reset = it brought my G5 to life but then a few minutes later it froze and history repeated itself.
Did a PRAM reset again and this time didn't work.
Tried booting from my PowerBook G4 HD via firewire = frozen gray screen
When I pressed the 'T', i get the FireWire logo and I'm able to boot my G5's HD using my PowerBook G4. But when I put my G4 on firewire mode and try to boot my G5 by selecting the OS of the G4, I still get the frozen screen, so the problem is not with the HD.
One time I was able to boot my G5 from the 'Restoration CD' and I used the Utilities to Fix permisions, and repair the HD but still the computer would freeze and same old story.
Since I got this problem, It has work normal only 3 occasions but no longer than an hour until the fans go crazy and freezes.
I tried different memory sticks and no improvement.
My AppleCare expired on May, and my G5 went down 2 or 3 months after that.
This feels part of an strategy called "Get a(nother) Mac". Where comps are design to last just a little after AppleCare expires and then BOOM! no choice but to spend some serious cash on fixing it or use that money plus more to get one of the resent mac which have had some changes since one bought the mac that just went to apple heaven.
Anyways, I feel that the problem will be solved by replacing the two processors, heatsinks, or whatever they called it.
I took apart my G5 today and I'm not sure but it seems that the heatsinks might use some kind of gas to cools the CPUs or Chips and I think that gas is over.
Has anyone swap the heatsink units and noticed any difference?
Here's of the heatsink for the PPC G5 2.0

  • Is the new iMac faster than my PowerMac G5 dual 2Ghz?

I have a PowerMac G5, Dual 2Ghz (first generation model)
2.5GB Ram, and a ATI 9800 Pro 256mb Graphics Card.
Looking at the SPEC ratings on the Apple page, the new iMac (2.0Ghz model) scored...
    SPECint_rate2000 = 32.6
    SPECfp_rate2000 = 27.1
And according to http://www.apple.com/lae/g5/ the dual 2Ghz scored...
    SPECint_rate2000 = 15.7
    SPECfp_rate2000 = 17.2
Doesn't this mean is roughly twice as fast? Does SPEC just measure the processor or the whole system?
And how does my ATI Radoen 9800 Pro 256MB compare to the ATI Radeon X1600 256MB?
    Thanks!

I agree. Specs are great and certainly are helpful in comparing the new MacBook to the new iMac as they are quite similar. What's really interesting is how PowerPC coded apps will compare to their universal binary equivalents on the new machines. I for one am curious to see how the universal binary of FCP Studio runs on the new iMac vs today's PowerMac. While people have been using FCP tools on G5 iMacs and G4 PowerBooks, performance isn't nearly as good as the same app on a Dual or Quad G5 PowerMac. It could usher in a whole new segment of Pro tools users who can get good performance from a less expensive option like the new iMac.

  • Powermac G5 dual 2.5GHz won't boot

    Hi,
I've recently started having issues with my dual 2.5GHz G5 Powermac. When I switch it on I can hear the drives start up and data being read from them. But there's never any chime and the screen stays black. The drives stay quiet (spinning but no data being read). After a minute or two the fans ramp up to full speed.
If I leave it off for a while (eg. overnight) it resolves itself somehow and boots up without any issues. Once it's booted up there are no issues at all and it will run fine for weeks and days, until it needs to be rebooted again. I just put it to sleep when I'm not using it and it wakes up fine.
I've tried the following without any success:
    - unplugging all peripherals (usb + firewire etc)
    - reseating the ram
    - swapping out the ram
    - trying to boot into open firmware (it won't get that far)
    - resetting the pmu with the button on the motherboard
    - installed the latest updates to os x
    - reseated the graphics card
    - replaced the battery on the motherboard with a brand new one
This started roundabout the time I upgraded to 10.5.5 though that could be a coincidence. I also cleaned dust from the inside of the machine at that time as well (including off the graphics card fan and heatsink which was getting clogged up). So, that may have caused it. But again it could just be a coincidence.
Does anyone have any suggestions? All fans and both fans spin up, so I don't think it's the PSU, but I could be wrong. My only thought at the moment is a possible problem with one of the drives. So, I could try installing to a firewire drive and booting from that, but given that I can't even get into openfirmare, I'm not confident in that working. Similarly I don't have much hope of it booting from CD.
Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated
    Phil

    Hi Phil Brayshaw-
What does the little white power light do? This should be helpful: About the Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) diagnostic LEDs
Although it sounds to me like you have tried most of the troubleshooting steps, this document is a good overall reference to address this particular problem: Power Mac G5: What to do if you see black, white, or no video at start up
Have you tried another monitor and/or double-checked your cable and its connections? If everything else is working as expected that would certainly be a major suspect.

  • Not used my G5 Powermac (late 2004) for ages. Only boots in with Installation disk, but colour dots on white screen and message comes up to reboot machine. Nothing happens.

Not used my G5 Powermac (late 2004) for  about 2 years. Was going to set it up for the lads to do school work.
However it only boots in with Installation disk, but colour dots on white screen and message comes up to reboot machine. However nothing happens apart from me keep trying. Also the numerous fans get louder and louder and louder.....
    Any ideas folks

Can you please provide details on the exact model?
For a start, the PRAM battery is likely dead.  PRAM tells the computer which drive to start with, other basic information.  Still, you can usually get the computer to start, though bad PRAM is unpredictable and could be stopping that.
Some computer models use software to control cooling fans.  If there's no software commands they automatically go into high speed to prevent overheating.  Your software obviously isn't loading, so runaway fans.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD 1.25GHz DP often completely locks up in the first few minutes after booting, sometimes with the spinning beach ball, normally with a very high pitched whining noise.

Over the last few months my Mac has developed a worrying habit.
Within the first few minutes of starting it up (perhaps on average about 50% of the time) it will completely lock up. This may happen at the Log In screen (if I start up the Mac & then leave it for a while) or during normal use.
Often the first symptom is a very high pitched (but quiet) whining noise that seems to come from the loud speaker on the front of the Mac. The pointer may freeze at this point, or it may still be moveable for 5 or 10 seconds before it freezes. It sometimes turns into the spinning beach ball during this. Once locked up the only way I can restart the Mac is to hold down the power button on the front for a few seconds to completely reboot the machine.
Once the Mac has restarted, it usually behaves normally, almost always for the rest of the day. The initial lock up & resulting restart only normally seem to happen the first time I use the Mac that day.
The only peripherals attached to the Mac (apart from the display, keyboard & mouse) are an ADSL modem, a USB printer and a pair of Apple Pro speakers, and this setup hasn't changed since long before the problems started, so I'm confident that I can discount the peripherals causing problems. I doubt that unplugging the speakers, for example, would have any effect.
I've run Disc Utility, OnyX and DiscWarrior without anything major cropping up. My instincts (I've been troubleshooting Mac problems for 16 years) tell me that I have a fundamental hardware problem, possibly with one of the 4 RAM DIMMs installed.
The RAM configuration is shown in the attached screen grab.
I'm considering removing one DIMM, running with 1.5GB of RAM rather than 2GB for a while, and repeating with a different DIMM removed each time until I can hopefully isolate the dodgy DIMM.
Do people feel this is a sensible approach, or should I try something else first?
    Many thanks.

Sometimes visual inpection will show bulging tops/sides., my guess is if it is it's most likely in the PSU.
Possible cheap fix, You can convert an ATX PSU for use on a G4...

  • Booting soolaris8 with 128 processors

I'm simulating with simics a Multiprocessor with SPARC and Solaris 8 as OS.
I have a working configuration with 64 processors, but when I try to boot a configuration with 128 processor I get the following error :
    panic [cpu149 ]/thread = 10408000 : add_softintr: exceeded 256 handlers
What I need to modify to allow this number of processors? It is possible?
    Any idea?
    Thank you very much.

Solaris 8? Since there were no physical 128 processor machines then, I'm assuming there's simply some hardcoded assumptions in either the boot code or the kernel that don't allocate enough space to use that many processors.
You'd probably need source code and modifications to make it work, but I have no idea how you'd get that for Solaris 8.
Any reason you're not trying this with OpenSolaris? There at least if you ran into issues you'd be able to examine or modify the source easily.

  • Dual 1.8 GHz G5 only running of one processor

My dad has a Dual 1.8 GHz G5 and had problems in the past, one of the processors went out. He took it to a repair shop and they switched it to run only off one processor. Apparently after they repaired the computer, they didn't tell it to run on both processors. We found out when we went to About this Mac. How do I tell it to run off both processors again?
    G5 Dual 2.7 GHz, 15-inch PowerBook 1.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Nap is a power saving feature.
The following processor states are defined:
    ■ Run: The system is running at maximum processing capacity with the processor running at full speed.
    ■ Idle: The system is idling; this is the default state. All clocks are running and the system can return to running code within a few nanoseconds. If the system has no work to do, it will be in idle mode.
From idle, the processor will enter deep nap state when the system is power-stepped to half frequency. In this state, the processor’s internal frequency is reduced to 1/64 of the maximum frequency. The processor frequency is returned to normal on exit from idle. The exit from idle takes a bit longer than the regular idle nap but is still in the nanoseconds.

  • Powermac Dual 2Ghz G5 won't boot

    Hello
I've had my powermac since December 2003. The other day, when I went to turn it on, the fans and HDDs started, but the display stayed blank and the LED blinks 3 times, then a pause, then blinks 3 times etc.
I have tried disconnecting everything, including the power for an hour or more.
I've read that it can be anything from a faulty graphics card, to bad RAM, to a bad logic board. I've never had a problem with the computer before, and I haven't changed the specification for 2 years.
I took out the extra Crucial RAM, but it didn't fix it. I also tried the extra Crucial RAM without the original RAM, but it still didn't fix it.
The computer is connected to a 20" Apple Cinema Display (ADC connector).
It's odd that the computer has just stopped working suddenly. The problem seemed to have started after installing 10.4.10 update... but I think that's just a coincidence.
I don't think it's worth paying £100 for a new graphics card when that might not be the problem. Same goes for a £450 logic board.
Are then any other possibilities of what the problem could be?

It must be a conspiracy because I am fighting this same issue on an original 2003 2Ghz G5 and it started yesterday.
The computer just froze while my wife was using Safari and listening to iTunes. Not a heavy load. The last system update to 10.4.10 was when it came out.
I had 8 dimms installed for a total of 4.5 G. The last new pair was a couple of years ago. I have removed the Ram a pair at a time and tried rebooting between each pair. I have tried each pair individually in the first slot. Nothing. All the memory is suddenly bad.
    I replaced the CPU battery.
    I have reset the PMU.
I have replaced the video card with the original video card.
I can't run diagnostics as it can't be booted in anyway without memory.
All of the memory has gone bad simulateously or the motherboard is fried!!!!!
It must have an expiration date if it happened to you as well????

  • ITunes 7.4.2.4 is freezing any time it tries to play video (Movie, TV)

I bought an iPod Touch yesterday. I then purchases a movie, some TV shows, and a couple of videos. If I navigate to to Movie everything is fine until I try to play it or view info and then iTunes locks up and needs to be force quit. It freezes immediately if I navigate to TV Shows. It freezes if I try to play a video in the music library or try to get info on it.
Music all plays fine. iPod syncs fine, but will freeze before completely transferring any video. It got to the last few seconds of transferring Prison Break, but then froze up. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Rebooting many times. Note that all of the video it is having problems with was just purchased last night from iTunes. I haven't tried anything that I've ripped myself with no DRM.
    Any help is appreciated.

I am also having problems playing videos. The music will play and the video freezes. My videos have played before but after I downloaded the last one now none play. Apple says give it two weeks (2 wks so that they could explore the problem) and try to purchase again with a credit that they gave me. They were not much help. If I find a solution I will definitley post it! I don't know if upgrading to iTunes 7.5 make the difference or not.

  • HT1937 Hey buddy my iphone freezes some times and sometimes when i m running my apps it stops and i get returned to hone screen

Hey guyz plz gelp me out from this problem

What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?
Basic Troubleshooting Steps when all else fails
    - Quit the App by opening multi-tasking bar, and swiping the App upward to make it disappear.  (For iOS 6, holding down the icon for the App for about 3-5 seconds, and then tap the red circle with the white minus sign.)
    - Relaunch the App and try again.
    - Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    - Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
    - Reset All Settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings)
    - Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
    - Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
    - Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

  • "STORED" Time On Texts With One Hour Earlier Time Wedged Between The Two Eastern Time Stamps.

The middle time stamp would coincide with Central Time, but it is not labeled as such. If that is what it represents, then it shouldn't
be on my texts since eastern Tennessee and Georgia are in the Eastern Time Zone.

    budone wrote:
    budone,
In the last two days there has been a change in the format of my text messages. Previously, the texts simply had a time stamp given in Eastern Time. NOW, this is followed with the date and AM or PM time, but the time is one hour earlier and NO Time Zone notation given. Then it says, 'Stored' with a time stamp matching the date and time given in the line designated as "Eastern."
Surely, there are others who have experienced this. I hope this clears the explanation up some.

  • I am really crazy for lion frozen. it happened any time

My mbp is 2010 mid 15''. Now, I use lion 10.7.2. The main problem is THE SYSTEM FROZEN. It happened any time. Sometime I use safari, it happened. I use Mail, it happened. I use Finder, it happened. I realy want to crazy. I reinstall the lion, but it not better. oh, I also have the experience for fronzen on the login screen. Every time the system frozen, what I can do is press the turnoff button to shut down the computer. WHO CAN HLEP ME!!!! One more thing, I turn on the function "Restart automatically if the computer freezes", but it also doesn't work.

I didn't add memory, and I also try to reinstall the OS 10.7.2 in a new partition, but it doesn't make sence. The system was frozen again on yesterday night. At that time, I just opened Safari(there are one or two tabs open). When I used Quicktime to open a .MOV video which made by iphone 4, the system was frozen. I could move the mouse pointer, but I cant use it to click any thing. The clock also stop. After I used power button to force turn off the computer and turn on, the system was frozen on the login screen. I used power button turn off it again and turn on again. This time everything seem like ok. However, when I wanted to type the password, I just click the mouse one more time, the system was fronzen. After that, I found that if I force turn off computer due to the system frozen, I have to type the password as soon as possible and shouldn't click the mouse. If not, the system will be frozen on the login screen. One more thing I notified, after restore system from the frozen, the spotlight will be reindexing.

  • Changing Processor for Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5

    Hello.
Is it possible to update my Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 to an Intel or other processor?  Of course, I'm finding that my machine is not being supported by software developers anymore, which is very frustrating. I've got a great machine that I love, but it needs to have a future!
What are my options?  Thanks in advance to all you for your help.
I'm running 10.5.8 on my Power Mac (June 2004).
    -Tracey

    No upgrade path at all.
    No way, no how.
The only way to get Intel processors is to buy a new machine that uses them.

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 - Only Boots with Side Cover and Fan Guard OFF!!

I have the strangest problem with my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5.  This has been my Pro Tools rig forEVER.
At some point early last year, my Mac wouldn't boot.  It would not see the hard drive, and would show that dreaded alternating icon in the middle of the screen indicating as much.  I tried resetting, tried power off/on, tried resetting PRAM.  Nothing.  I took the cover off, and fan guard off to get at the hard drive.  Verified the data and power cable were seated in hard drive.  Cover still off, I booted up the system.  Voila!!!  Booted right up like nothing was ever wrong.  I put the cover back on, and went about my business, passing it off as a one-off power glitch (the power in my house ***** rocks).  Next time I rebooted the Mac, the exact same thing happened.
I can repeat this at will.  If I leave the cover on, the system will not ever, ever boot.  The minute I take the cover and fan guard off, causing the fans to spin at max speed when turned on, the system boots without issue.  So, I reset PRAM and PMU.  I even tried replacing that green/white cylindrical battery on the motherboard.  Reseated power/data cable on hard drive.  ****, I even tried a different hard drive and memory (explained below).  No change.
Since then, I have relegated this system to the emergency backup system, and procured Dual 2.7 G5 PowerMac.  I transferred the pro tools cards, hard drive (without formatting it) and memory (8 GB) to this new 2.7, and have not had a single, solitary issue with it.  So, I know it's not the hard drive, memory, OS install, or Pro Tools cards.
What in the name of the Apple Gods could be causing this issue?  Any ideas at all?

    Hi Chris,
Good info & work so far, but indeed strange, only thing I can think of is something to do with that little switch for the fan cover... near the bottom as I recall, but it may be some kind of short in it's circuit.
