PowerMac G5 freezes, fan is blowing hard

Hello everyone:
My PowerMac G5 is about 3 years old, running OS Tiger 10.4.11 and has been working fine. A couple of weeks ago, it started freezing up overnight with the fan going into overdrive and blowing hard. I can only shut it off by pulling the plug. At restart it makes 2 clicking noises, and then it boots fine--and works fine until the next freeze.
It started happening more often which prompted me to run the disk utility. It came up with a message that "Volume header needs minor repair." I repaired it using the OSX CD.
Question: does anyone else have the same problem and did the utility fix the problem for good? Or should I be thinking about a new hard drive? Thanks in advance for your help!!!

I can say I have the same problem with different results. I too have been noticing this is primarily happening when I out the machine to sleep. I will wake up in the morning to find the fans going full blast. I have also encountered getting a phone call from someone at home telling me my computer sounds like it's about to blow up! I put it to sleep each morning after checking my emails and heading out to work. At times the room can get get a bit warm and this may be adding to the issue. I have also read not to use any animated screen savers (which I have been) and so I may just do away with those to see what happens.
I have recently encountered more system freezes where I will have audio playing, the machine locks up with the audio sounding like a broken record repeating itself. The only way to get out of it is a hard reboot by holding the power button in. Same way I have to reboot it after I find it in the morning with the fans at full speed. I have also encountered a few kernel panics as well while in the middle of working in Photoshop or web browsing using Safari or just checking emails.
I have run the Apple Hardware Test CD both Quick and Extended Tests and get a pretty balanced result of everything is OK, or a Logic Board failure where it gives me this error code - 2STH/1/2:CPU B AD7417 AD1 - from which all I have been able to gather is something to do with a thermal sensor for one for the CPUs?
My CPU die temps are not horribly hot although I notice CPU B usually runs about 7-10º F warmer than CPU A. This is pretty constant as well no matter what task.
I have reseated all the boards, used compressed air to clean it out, cleaned the fans and radiator the best I can. I had one of the CPUs replaced less than 3 months after having bought the machine from Apple. I sure hope one of the CPUs is not going bad again as my AppleCare just expired 2 months ago.
I'd really love to know specifically what the error code I get from the AHT means. So far, I have been blessed not to see any leaks inside the case which seems to becoming a more frequent issue with my model machine.
I too am very interested to hear from others who are experiencing this issue. My S.M.A.R.T. status is good so I know my HD is fine. I have swapped out graphics cards and memory to the originals, neither of which have changed anything. Going to try reseting the SMU on the board again along. Also replacing the SRAM battery even though I know it has nothing to do with this specific issue. I just notice after forcing the machine to shut down and reboot, the date likes to come up as 1969 a lot of times.

Depends. We first need to know your iMAc model to know if your have a problem or a feautre. For a start, you can do "About this Mac" and tell us what it says about your Mac OSX version and processor type:

Now we know that the problem is caused by a process in OS X which is consuming all the CPU. This generates heat, that makes the fans work hard.
Open Activity Monitor, and choose "All Processes" in "Show" in the toolbar. Then, order the processes by CPU pressing the CPU button under the toolbar. Finally, telll us which processes are consuming more CPU

Fan is blowing like **** after installing Yosemite on MBP (early 2011)

Problem description:
I installed Yosemite on my MacBookPro 13’ early 2011, the fan is blowing on high speed.
I tried the following:
I did SMC, also rebooted in safe mode, removed everything from spotlight, nothing seams to help.
In the activity monitor there are Dock, lsregister and Spotlight that together more than 300% of the cpu.

Un-install CleanMyMac2. It may be the cause of the problems Software like this isn't required on Macs.

I suspect you didn't reset it right.
Turn off the machine, let it charge up and then try the SMC reset again.

Double click the Home button. Slide up with one finger on ALL your apps to close them.
Then, Press the Sleep/Wake button + Home button and hold 15 seconds or until you see the Apple logo.
This will reset your device without erasing data, apps or settings.

Pavilion G2-b27SA Laptop Won't Boot - Fan Whirs and Hard Disk Light Comes On but Nothing Else

My Pavilion G2-b27SA laptop won't boot. The fan whirs, the hard disk and wirless lights come on but nothing happens on-screen and the fan goes quiet after a couple of seconds (to a low whir).
I've gone through and tried the solutions in this thread - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-e-g-Windows-8/Laptop-will-not-turn-on/td-p/102825 - with no luck. Specifically, I've tried a hard reset and hitting F10 when the laptop tries to boot. Neither has had any effect.
Is there anything else I can try to get the computer working again? If I take it to a laptop repair shop (I'm out of warranty) will they be able to do anything, or is it effectively dead now?

The laptop can always be fixed if you have a bottomless wallet. On a no-start with flashing lights it is likely the motherboard and a motherboard replacement if you have the shop buy the board and bill you for labor will be about $300 give or take 25%. Before we give up, it could be bad memory or a few other less expensive things. Assuming they do not charge too much just to diagnose it; take it to the shop.

VPN client using 50% of cpu, causing machine to run hot and fans constantly blow.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I have a Cisco VPN client to access the internet at school, and the process "vpnclient" is using ~51.6 percent of my cpu power. It's not using much "real" memory, but the computer is running pretty consistently at mid-high 70's C with the fans blowing at 6200 RPM constantly. I elevated it to try and get some airflow under it (even though i'm at a desk) and the temperature went down by a couple degrees, but not enough to stop the fans from blowing. I've only got Chrome, activity monitor, and finder open right now so I know the load on the computer shouldn't be bad enough to make the fans blow. Unplugging the machine makes the temperature go down pretty much instantly, but i've never had a problem with this before.
MacBook, mid-2008, 2.4 ghz with 4g of RAM.

Have you tried using the Tunnelblick VPN Client from google? Its a pretty decent piece of software which I run all the time from home, withouth any increase to to fan speed or temp

Fan blowing hard upon set to sleep

I have a few problems at the moment with my Imac G5. It starts up extremely slow..like 10 minutes and then it makes the fan blow when I put it to sleep and the light/heart does not light up anymore. The only thing I can do is to keep the powerbutton in and kill it. Does anyone know this issue?

Welcome to Discussions - you can try starting from your install disc and then use
Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
See what comes up and please post back with results.

My Mac Pro won't start up, fans blowing hard.

I bought a secondhand Mac Pro 1,1 - dual core 2,66 Ghz a few months ago.
The company I bought it from put an ATI Radeon 5770 HD and a 150 GB SSD in it.
It ran completely fine untill yesterday afternoon.
I needed some extra storage space for my files, so I opened up my broken iMac G4, unattached the hard drive.
This is what happened:
I shut down my Mac Pro,
with all the cables attached I moved the Mac over,
I opened it up, put in the extra hard drive in bay 3 (power chord still attached), closed it and tried to power it on.
The graphics card's fan began to blow immediately.
I heard no startup chime. Ten seconds later the main fan began to blow.
There was no video output, the screen stayed on stand-by.
The Diagnostic leds show only 'trickled', no other leds.
I searched alot on the internet for a solution, and tried all the resets and solutions I could find.
A brief list of what I've tried:
-pram reset
-smc reset (manually and automatically)
-boot without graphics card
-boot without RAM
-boot without cd-drives
-boot without harddisks
-I pulled all elements out (graphics card, ram, power supply, HD's, cd-drives) to check for broken or loose connectors.
Nothing worked so far.
What I did find, are some damaged power cords from my cd-drives:

And if not, what could possibly be wrong?

The existing breaks in the power leads for the Optical drives should not cause this problem when the optical drives are disconnected, provided they are not shorted to something else.
But if, at some time, they shorted out, it could have confused or damaged the power supply.
First, reset everything:
Remove AC power.
Press and hold the power-on button for a quarter minute (this drains the capacitors).
Wait a quarter minute more.
Restore the AC power cord.
Wait a quarter minute more.
Attempt to start up again.
To check for damage, measure the DC Voltages at a Molex connector (such as the one that is not damaged). You should find a bit above 5 Volts on one of the outside leads (often red wire) and a bit above 12 Volts on the other outer lead (often yellow wire). This should be relative to either/both inner wires (often black wire) or any other black wire, or the frame.
( If you do not already have one, a perfectly serviceable digital multi-meter for this purpose can now be had for as little as US$10, and does not require a degree in rocket science to measure DC Voltages. More money buys a higher-quality instrument with additional precision that is simply not necessary, but not an impediment)

Dead mini? Fan blows hard when plugged in-- that's it

Has anyone experienced this before?
My Mac Mini core duo has decided to do one thing these days-- as soon as you plug in the power brick cable into the mac, the fan blows like mad. Nothing else happens.
I've tried swapping out the RAM, but that ain't fixed it. I'd have problems trying a spare processor though.
Any tips? Is it economical to take it to the apple store, or is it eBay time for a secondhand one?

Unfortunately, this little Mac's DVD drive is busted too!
I've just tried swapping the processor for another core duo (an identical part!) and that failed. I suspect it's the logic board.
Certainly, I have had the mac opened up, but it failed almost 3 months after it last opened -- and I am fairly proficient.
I feel this mac is now a paperweight. : (

G5 powermac freezes, fan get loud

Recently uninstalled lion and reinstalled leopard. Restore apps and files from time machine backup. Now, the mac freezes, screen goes black and fan noise gets loud. I can power off and restart, but after several minutes, happens all over again. Any advice?

Have you blown the dust out lately, especially the PSU, CPU, RAM, & graphic card?

PowerMac G5 Freezing

Hey everyone. I've been having some trouble with a Mac in my possession and was hoping for some insight.
Apparently from the first few weeks of use this computer has experienced random lock-ups when running basic programs (Safari, Terminal, iTunes, etc.). It could be sitting idle for a few hours and then freeze, or within the first 2-3 minutes of using Safari, or within a song in iTunes...you get the idea. So I ran through all the regular stuff - checked for and updated system software, looked for firmware updates, and watched the 'top' command from time to time. None of these cleared up the problem. So then I tried a re-install of the OS (originally 10.3.9). This also proved fruitless, as the computer resumed stalling in all the previously mentioned ways. Next, I tried wiping the drive to all zeros and installing OSX 10.4. Once the OS was up, I ran the Software Updater to get all the latest patches. I ran the system for a few minutes in various programs before experiencing yet another freeze. So now I got down to the hardware...
First, I tried running the Apple Hardware Test disc that came with the Mac. I ran a short and long test, both of which passed. I then ran the Long Test on loop for 12.5 hours (12 loops). All passed without incident. The machine stayed running the entire time, never once crashing. Next, I removed the hard drive and zeroed it using a Seagate utility, hoping it was something the Apple software did. Reinstalled, patched...freeze. So I tried a different hard drive in its place. Zeroed it, installed 10.4, patched. Froze again. At this point, I got a bit frustrated. So, I attempted running a Linux PPC LiveCD on the machine. To my surprise, it ran like a champ. I had at least 6 programs running, playing music, browsing the web, running a game, etc. No freezes, no hiccups for 4 hours of use. Booted back into 10.4, and froze within minutes.
So finally, I tried the memory modules. I pulled all four, put them into my PC and ran memtest86. I let this run for about 3.5 hours. No errors reported. So I figured I'd try only plugging so many modules back in, leaving one slot empty. I tried this with all four, with no luck. (Interestingly, when I tried removing the Slot 0 DIMM and starting, the machines power light blinked three times repeatedly. Couldn't get to OSX until I replaced em all and rebooted.)
So, I'm not sure this is a hardware problem, seeing as how Linux PPC ran fine. Although I'm not sure it's not either. Maybe Linux didn't hit a bad segment of memory, processor, etc. I know that probably no one has seen a situation like this, but I've been all over these forums for the past week looking for answers, and coming up short.
Any help you all could provide would be GREATLY appreciated.

So I've tried running the AppleJack utils. It completes and asks to have the machine restarted. Upon getting back into OS X I find that the freeze phenomenon is still present. I was hoping that I could pull the memory modules from my PC and try them in the G5, however I've run into a problem there too. I have 2 1GB DDR400 memory modules (matched) in my PC. The Mac uses 4 modules, 2 512MB DDR333 modules and 2 128MB DDR333 modules. They appear to be set up for dual channel operation. I tried removing all 4 DIMMs from the Mac and placing 1 of my 1GB pieces in Slot 0 of the DDR bank. Upon bootup, the power indicator blinks once with a 1-2 delay before a similar blink. Does the machine require a dual channel setup? Is it complaining because the memory config. has changed? Will the Mac's logic board not accept the DDR400 (i.e. not scale back the memory to operate at DDR333)?
This is one of the last ideas I have for this machine. I'm afraid that soon I may have to have someone from Apple diagnose it to find out if it's a logic board / processor issue. In that instance, how has everyone's experience been with them? Do the techs know whats going on, or is it hit-or-miss?
