PowerMac G5 Image across single, dual, and quad Processor Macs

Good Day,
Our organization is preparing to roll out Tiger. To streamline
this process we have decided to create images for each Mac family in
use. I know I need to find the newest possible model to create the
image but what is the rule for single, dual, and quad processor macs?
Can we use an image created on a quad processor PowerMac on the
dual/single processor PowerMacs?
Thanks

Macs of different models and vintages may take different restore disks. The disk image method of doing this kind of work may or may not work. Use the original disks when faced with different releases or different models. See this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25784
So a dual-single processor transfer will not necessarily work.
In addition, there are license agreement considerations.
I would not do it unless you know you are in the clear on both accounts.

  • Difference between dual and quad processor

I'm looking into maybe switching from my iMac to the Power Mac G-5 with the 30" screen. Besides internet/email usage I do a lot with PhotoShop CS2. I think at this point in time I don't want to switch to the Intel, and will stay with the standard Mac system. Too many programs to start switching right now.
First, is there a big difference between the dual and quad processor? Since doing Photo Shop is for pleasure and not a business where time is the essence, would I really see a big difference in speed? I would up the 512 memory to probably 2 or 3 GB as well (like I did on my iMac)
2nd, Do I have to add a different graphics card, or can I use the one that comes in the computer? I don't do gaming just still pictures.
    Thanks, Allie1254

    Allie,
Do get the Quad PPC and the next level up video card and AppleCare.
1: PCI-Express video cards are impossible to come by right now, so get one up from the stock version, you'll come to appreciate it later on. Adds to resale value.
2: ATI who makes video cards for Macs has been bought by AMD, a processor competitor to Intel. Who knows what the future is going to be on that.
3: AppleCare is mandatory, one year isn't enough to cover a investment of this sort unless you do plan to dump it before then. Still AppleCare is a added plus to selling if you do.
If you can get more RAM, more than 3-3.5GB, CS2 will do a amazing 40% more performance because it won't use the slow boot drive as a memory swap (aka "scratch") disk.
If your handy, or have someone nearby that is, you can buy the RAM at Crucial.com a heck of a lot cheaper than Apple.
If you really want more performance, I suggest getting a large stock drive that comes from Apple, and a 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA Western Digital 16MB Raptor and (Disk Utility Erase w/ Zero all new drives 1x first) and then install Tiger on the Raptor with all your space hogging files in new folders on the large stock drive. Keep the boot drive less than 50% filled.
You'll see a incredible snappiness to your OS as Mac OS X "feel" speed is highly dependent upon boot drive speed.
Your Quad's CPU's are powerful and they can crunch quite a bit, like a bulldozer that can move a lot of dirt. So you can do more at once. But large filled slow boot drives and low RAM just hobble them.
If you never cloned your boot drive before, you should learn how to do that too. (Don't clone a different machines OS to a new one though.) You'll need a external firewire 800/400 drive equal to or bigger than your boot drive.

  • How do you Spread an Image across multiple pages and print?

I'm trying to create a large poster to be put on a bulletin board. I've mangaed to spread the image across multiple pages but I can't figure how to be able to print the pages have the edges line up successfully after cropping. I've been playing with the bleed settings but can't figure it out. Here a shot of what im working with:

  • Spread image across two pages and print the full pages

    Hi there,
Im having a bit of trouble with InDesign CS3.
I want to place an image across two facing pages but can't seem to make it go further than one page.
Also I want to figure out how to print full pages, currently I am only able to print what is contained in the pruple bounding box on the page, any part of the image outwith this is cropped off leaving a white border on the page - this isn't an issue for all but my title page and this two page image I require.
    Any tips.
    Cheers
    malc

I don't understand the inability to place an image that spans two pages (not that I necessarily think this is a good thing to do under most circumstances, but that's a different discussion). Can you see both pages in the same spread? How about providing some details about what you are doing, and maybe a screen shot showing what's happening. Perhaps you're using a frame on the master page?
The second part sounds like a printer issue, but that's hard to know without knowing what your "purple" guides (presumably the page margins) are set to. Most printers are not able to print to the edge of the sheet of paper, regardless of what might be included on the page, so you get a white border that will vary in size depending on the printer model. Generally speaking, to print a bleed you must extend the items beyond the page edge (to insure there is no white edge left fom misaligment in the cutter) and print on a larger sheet, then trim to finished size.

  • Dual or quad processor

We are putting our toe in the linux/dell/oracle water and are faced with our first question of either
    Quad 2.0Ghz
    or a
    Dual 2.8Ghz
    (everything else will be equal)
Not being from an oracle background I cant really give you a detailed description on what we are doing on the server other than "two people running data analysis sort of things on (very) big datasets". Yeah, it was a pretty feeble description.
I was pleased to read (in this forum) that oracle/linux uses the extra processor when running jobs (as opposed to our current software on windows boxs), but will the two faster processors work better than four slower ones?

    You have a quad core.
    Number of Cores: 4

  • What the heck is Single Core, Dual Core, and Quad Core Processor Configurat

I am listing an eMac computer on ebay. I have all the information necessary except processor configuration. Do eMacs come with Single, Dual, or Quad processor configurations? Or does it vary? I don't even know what those are really.

Make sure to follow these steps when selling*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/selling.html
As was already indicated all eMacs were single core.
Apple didn't start releasing multicore machines until the later G5s.

  • Thermal issues with PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 Processor

I've been having issues with my fans running super loud for no apparent reason. I have been told that my thermal meter for one of my processors has gone bad and that I have to replace both my processors at a cost of over $800! I am simply wondering if there has been any other issues even similar to this one or if anyone can tell me if I really do have to have both processors replaced for this situation. Also, I am wondering if anyone knows how to run the processor diagnostic where I can view my computers feedback for myself.
I am a starving designer and desperate to fix my biggest tool. Please let me know of any possible suggestions or cheap fixxes. If there is no way around replacing both processors, please let me know of any good mac processor retailers! Thanx all!

  • Powermac G5 2.0 GHz dual wi-fi signal problems

i was gifted a Powermac G5 2.0 GHz dual and my wi-fi signal has been intermittent at best despite my router being 10 feet away, and getting full signal on my macbook.
I then found out that it is supposed to have an external antennae for this, and also one for bluetooth (which I don't have)
Can anyone reccomend a good USB 2-1 bluetooth/wi-fi adapter that will solve this dilemma (and my lagging magic mouse) that is compatible with my system running 10.5.8, I would really appreciate it.

  • One Image for dual and single processor G5 machines

I'm working in a lab that has both single and dual processors G5 machines. There is only one image for both machines and I suspect that we have a few bugs with the single processor machines because of this. Has anyone else used one image for both single and dual processors? Have there been problems. I'm wondering if it is necessary to create two separate images.
    mdinger

There is not difference in the images, but you might have problems with the single G5 machines and 10.4. Did you do the firmware upgrade?
I have ~10 single G5 and 25 dual D5 machines netinstalled from one image without trouble.

  • Performance Difference Between Dual 2.7 and Quad, and Logic Pro

I used to have a G5 DP 2.7 before it went bad and Apple offered me a Quad in exchange. I'd like to understand some details of the specs between these two computers and how they might translate with respect to running Logic Pro (which I'll get to in a minute)...
Listed below are the specs which I believe illustrate the significant differences between these two machines (this info is based on info gleaned from Macworld, since the specific specs of the DP 2.7 no longer appear on Apple's website):
    Dual 2.7
(2x) 2.7 GHz, cache = 512K per processor, frontside bus speed = 1.35 GHz per processor
    Quad
    (4x) 2.5 GHz, cache = 2MB on-chip L2 per chip, frontside bus speed = 1.25 GHz per processor
So here's the link with Logic: it's become apparent of late that Logic Pro is not able to fully utilize the processing power of all 4 cores in the Quad. Reports are that performance tops out at 50% per processor, resulting in approx. 200% possible processing usage from the 4 cores in the Quad.
However, such a limitation in processor usage wasn't present in the DP 2.7.
So based on the information I've learned so far, it seems that the Quad and the DP 2.7 are almost equivalent in terms of processing power when running Logic Pro. Now, this is what I'm surmising, but, is this actually the case? At the end of the day, I'd like to know if the Quad indeed a more powerful computer than the DP 2.7 when running Logic Pro, or, did my exchange of DP 2.7 for the Quad constitute a "downgrade" of any proportion?

The only logical answer to Why Intels do and PPC don't is:
Apple want everybody to transition to their Intel boxes. The only way to do this is offer better performance in software tweaks for one system over the another, which begs the question what else will Apple do to software for PPC owners?
Having bought a Mac Pro, primerily for testing out certain software apz under Rosetta, I did a real time test between my 8GB RAM G5 Quad and my stock Mac Pro upgraded to 2GB RAM, batch processing 204 Canon 1DsMKII RAW files into 16-Bitt TIFFs. I put a thread on the Mac Pro forum here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=627916&tstart=15
I so wanted my Quad to squash the Intel invaded Mac, but results speak for themselves. The Mac Pro flattened the G5 Quad by over 23 minutes (it worked out as 1.7 times faster than the G5Quad).
If that's how it performs with 2GB RAM it's gonna really fly when I max it out. So, for musicians, I would imagine with the Quad core support for Intel Macs in Logic 7.2.2 makes a fairly straight forward decision. . .buy a Mac Pro and sell your PowerMac. More time composing less time waiting for renders (never used music software so if it doesn't render your composition place whatever it does do into the 'renders' slot )
P.S I hated, really hated having to say the Mac Pro toasted my G5 Quad, I so wanted the Intel to fall flat on it's aluminium as$, but it didn't. It's a quick machine. A very quick machine which toasted my Quad in real time tests using a universal Pro app from a 3rd Party (who would have no incentive to dumb down the PPC version as they sell their product to Windows, PPC OS X and Intel OS X)

  • Trying to make single layer disk image AFTER making dual layer image

    Hi all
I wonder if you can help me.
I just made a dual-layer DVD image from a project and it created a 7GB file. Now I'd like to try a single-layer disk image at 4.7GB, something I did with an earlier version of this project, resulting in a watchable disk on a smaller TV.
Having made the 7GB image, Encore won't let me make the 4.7GB version but I don't understand why.
    Martyn

    Thanks John.
I don't know the answer to your AVI/MPEG2-DVD question. Sorry.
I simply imported my PPro sequences, built my menus and created the disk image for a dual-layer disk. Whatever source format that involves, that was the one I've used. How can I find out?
Is there an alternative way of building a disk that will allow me to choose all DVD/image/Blu-ray output options without starting again?

  • Quad, Dual and Confusion

    I'm confused :-p
    What is the difference between:
    Dual core
    Dual processor
    Quad?
Do Dual processors and Quad cores actually have 2 processors on the one motherboard?
    Thanking you in advance.
    - MH

    Hi Mick
A Dual Core is a processor with two processing cores inside one processor chip, for dual processing.
A dual processor is a computer with two processors
A Quad is a PowerMac with two Dual Core processors, giving the system four processors.
    All the best

My Photoshop CS 5 has some strange actions when I copy a portion of a photo using the clone stamp  to transfer to another part of the image. It carries the entire layer (not just the stamps selection) across the screen and I cannot place it where I need to. It appears as if I selected the entire layer on purpose (which I did not)
The below items appeared when I opened Photoshop CS 5:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled G & U enhancements. Check the video card malfunctions website for latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the performance panel of preferences.”
(I believe this started after the automatically updated Windows was applied. It was coincident with the before mentioned problem . . . but I don’t really know if it had anything to do with it. )

For the Clone Stamp problem, check the Clone Source panel and Clipped is probably unchecked.
If so, check Clipped and see if that makes a difference.
    (Window>Clone Source)
As to the video card problem:
Which version of windows are you using?
What is the make and model of your graphics card?
Do you know which update windows installed?

  • Need to select and move images across multiple pages...

    Hi,
I am using Indesign CS2 on a Windows machine and have a 25 page document with 4-up photos (4"X6") on individual pages. I used the ImageCatalog javascript to load these images so I don't seem to have any control from the Master page. I would like to group and move these images to a different location on their own pages.
Do you know how to select these images across multiple pages? Or can a simple script be written to process this task?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    -Greg

    Hi Greg,
A script can certainly do what you want to do--but you have to be a bit more specific. Do you want to move them to different pages in some predefined way, or do you just want to adjust them a bit on the pages they're already on?
    Thanks,
    Ole

  • Is there a noticeable difference between Dual Core i7 and Quad Core i7?

    Hi everyone.
I'm going to be a college freshman this fall. I'm looking at 13" MacBook with Retina Display with dual core i7.   I'm also looking at the 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display with Quad Core i7. I want to major in science and have a concentration in photography, which means that I will run programs like Excel, PowerPoint (or keynote), and Photoshop.
Anyways, will there be a noticeable difference between a Dual Core i7 processor and a Quad i7 processor?
    Thanks!

Ceteris Paribus, the quad-core will be twice as fast as the dual-core.
