Powermac G5 shuts down frequently
I have a dual 2.3GHz G5 that has been been shutting down during normal use. I have come to think it may be related to audio hardware, as it frequently occurs when I try to start iTunes, Audacity(audio editor) and it seems to happen randomly while viewing web pages with embedded audio and video files. I reset the PRAM yesterday and the computer shut down on my first attempt to launch iTunes after the restart. I have the system profiler log that I ran after that. The line in that system.log section of the report that caught my attention was:

This is a common problem that Apple have not addressed. It seems people starting having this problem after update 10.4.7 onwards - and frequents with iTunes/Audio use.
So yes, it's a software issue. BUT on the other hand, some folk have had their hardware replaced and the shutdowns have stopped.

Basically, there is NO solution yet, just alot of guessing and crossed fingers.
If you call Apple support, they're pretty clueless - you'll go through the normal round of questions and then be told your power supply needs replacing.

This is free software for system information and it can show/measure the temperature of some of the computer components.
In my opinion your problem looks like overheating issue. When the computer's fan is not working, it overheats (especially if the CPU/HDD are overloaded with some tasks) and stops working (powers down unexpectedly with no messages) to prevent damage. If this is the case, it would be good to monitor the temperature.

Iphone 4 / 4s shuts down frequently from itself
My girl-friend has an iphone 4 and since a few weeks it shuts down frequently spontaneous.
Replaced the battery and totally renewed the IOS. No succes. While doing this, my iphone 4 also shut down spontaneous!
Also replaced the battery and replaced the IOS. No succes. 2 Friends of mine have exactly the same problems with their iphone 4S.
Is there a wifi-virus in Nijmegen, The Netherlands??? Are there more people with this problem??
If shut down, it can be started up again by doing a reset. Our iphones are not reliable anymore.....After I removed Facebook and FB messenger, my iphone problems vanished. No spontaneous shutdowns anymore.
My girl-friend first removed FB messenger with no succes. After removing Facebook, she also is free of problems. -

You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.

Hello all! My PowerMac G4 has been shutting down by it's self lately. It's not a proper shut down, it just dies. Last night, the monitor flicked off, then on, then off, then the computer just died. I hit the power button, it starts back up, runs a couple minutes, then dies again. Is the power supply bad? If so, what kind do I need? If not, what is it? Thanks!

I never even thought about dust build up as I keep a tidy studio. I went ahead and opened the case and gave everything a good vacuum. It was very clean inside, though the fan blades have the typical dust build up on the blades. The heatsink was clean. However, the air intake slot Allen spoke of on the front bottom had a good deal of built up dust. I thoroughly vacuumed both sides and cleared it of any debris.
It's running right now and I'll see how long it goes. Now that I've tested the logic board, cleaned all dust and verified that both fans are running, is it possible the power supply needs replaced? Over the past couple of weeks, I'd use the computer all day or evening, then walk in and it would be off. This happened a couple times. Last night I walked in and it was off, so I turned it back on, the display turned off/on a few times and then the computer turned off. I powered up again and the same happened. Each time I power back up, I get the normal message stating the computer was not properly shut down.
Is this the behavior of a faulting power supply? To act intermittently? I want to be as sure as possible before I shell out $200 for one I dont need. This is, of course, if the cleaning doesn't solve the problem. Thanks guys! -
New PowerMac G5 Shuts Down on Start-Up
Just bought a new 2 gig, low-end G5 PowerMac with OS 10.4.3 and it periodically shuts down after turning it on. Sometimes it shuts down after the chime, sometimes after the desktop pops up and sometimes (rarely) after working a bit.
Called Apple and ran through the usual tests of unplugging all peripherals, changing outlets the power cord plugged into, etc to no avail. They said to take it to authorized dealer.
I went to An Apple Store, whereupon it worked fine. They said try running a lot of apps to make it shut down. Not sure what this will do and it still shuts down.
Has anyone had experience declaring a "dead on arrival"?
Ideas?no this is the only firewire device attached and it is (or was) directly attached to the firewire port on the back (i have tried the port in the front and it does the same thing).
I'm at a complete loss as to what the problem may be??? all i wanna know is what has happened and what i need to fix it? (new soundcard, repair firewire, new mac!!!) then i can get on with getting it fixed. -
I am stumped as my iPad2 is frequently shutting down while I am using it. I took it to the Apple Store where they cleared it and I reloaded the Apps, but this didn't help. It is less than a year old.
Another fellow Apple users suggested the following steps:
1. Try a reset (probably unnecessary for you, but try it anyway)
2. Clean docking port with clean tooth brush and alcohol (and not too much alcohol)
3. Try another wall socket (preferably one that's not shared with other devices)
4. Try another cable (make sure it's an original Apple cable)
5. Try another charger (make sure it's an original Apple charger)
6. Make sure you're not using a USB hub (may not have enough of power) -
Why does my database server shut down frequently?

I have been cooking right along in Captivate, and making some really cool things. Unfortunatly, I seem to have recently developed a glitch I cannot get rid of. I attempt to copy a slide, import a slide, copy and paste significant portions of a slide to a new slide, etc., and Captivate gives me the "sorry for the inconvenience, but the program must shut down" window.
I have tried other files than what I was working in. I have re-booted. I have uninstalled and re-installed a new instance of the program. I am at a loss.
Thoughts on this?

It would seem that your Captivate file might have become corrupted. In this first instance (if you are using Adobe Captivate 4 or later), I would look for the .bak file which Adobe Captivate automatically creates. Make a copy this file and remove the .bak file suffix. Next, try opening the backup file and see if that makes any difference.
If not then instead of trying to import your slides, I would suggest you carry out the following steps:
Open your original Adobe Captivate file
Load another instance of Adobe Captivate
Create a new blank project at the same size as your original and save it
Switch back to your original file, select all the slides and then copy al of these
Switch to your new file and paste them.
If all goes well you should then be able to save the new project file. However, if Adobe Captivate crashes this will tell you that there is a corrupted Slide / Object in your original project file. If that is the case then you should do the following:
Open your original and new created Adobe Captivate files; the new file should still consist of one blank slide.
Switch to the original file and start copying a small number of slides (maybe 10)
Switch to the newly file and paste these in.
Save the newly created file
Now you should keep copying and pasting the slides from the original file. At some point you might find that one of the slides won't paste or that it might appear as a blank slide. Now you can either try to re-create that slide or switch back to the original file and try and work out which Slide in the last group of slides you copied where the corruption might of occured.

Autonomous Shutdown: Powermac G5 Shutting Down Randomly at Login
Hello and happy friday.
Suddenly, this G5 tower running Tiger seems to work only about half the time. After startup, the error message usually appears as "Your Computer did not shut down properly..." etc. Sometimes the machine will churn away after logging in, and then shut down on its own.
On a good day, that autonomous shutdown is replaced with an odd 'kick you out after login' sort of anomoly, wherupon my loging in several times in a row finally works. Very strange, as functionality seems normal after that point.
I haven't heard any odd hardware noises, fans seem in order, etc. Also there are no anomoulous screens such as blinking folder icon, so it seems not to be a drive mounting issue, but beats me, I've never ran into this before.

My MacBook 13" Alu Unibody, which runs on Snow Leopard crashes once every two days. Screen fades out and I get prompted with the message saying "You Need to Restart Your Computer".
Especially when I use Google Chrome and some flash element runs, like YouTube. My fan suddenly goes totally nuts and my computer gets really warm. Other times, the fan runs normally and I have a few apps open, and then it shuts down suddenly.

When your fans are going and the computer is getting hot, go to Applications/ Utilities/ Activity Monitor. Change the pull-down menu to "All Processes" ("My Processes" is the default) and then sort by the CPU column. Is there something going on that is spiking your CPU? -
Time Capsule shuts down frequently
Over the last few weeks my Time Capsule has been shutting down randomly. I did a hard reset a couple of weeks ago and that seemed to resolve the situation for a time, but now it has recurred.
The new express I haven't had opportunity to test. I would say it was pretty much the same, although they are not as good as the extreme.. use 10/100 port still, can introduce a slow down. So if you can afford it the Extreme is always going to be better as a router or AP. Still the reality is wireless seldom gets close to 100mbit so whilst theoretical speeds require gigabit.. reality is a harsh word. If you are close enough to get more than 100mbit, you are close enough to use a patch cable. (That is assuming Apple didn't leave out the ethernet port of course).
In my testing the wireless of the whole series is medium.. middle of the road. Whilst the latest generation stuff is supposed to have big power boosts.. I could barely detect a difference.. and in my double storey house.. my old G modem has wireless signal right to the extreme ends of the house.. Neither the TC or latest Extreme could get any signal there at all. YMMV.. ! -
G5 Powermac keeps shutting down
This has taken ages to post as after a few minutes, my computer just shuts itself down. Usually I can just start it up again (although on 2 occasions it refused until I unplugged it at the wall temporarily).
It happens instantly and without warning.
What's happening!I have a PowerMac G5 dual 2.3 (early 2005) and it seems to do this also, although I've never been at the computer when it happens. This seems to be a software issue. If I boot in 10.4.11 it never happens, but has happened continuously since Leopard 10.5 thru 10.5.5.
My Mac is set to never sleep, so it's not a sleep issue. PRAM/NVRAM has nothing to do with this. I don't think it's a power issue, my Mac is attached to a UPS and had the warranty Power Supply replacement from Apple.
The logs show nothing as far as I can tell. I don't think it's a normal shutdown, I think it just quits. The restart always deletes "orphaned files", implying an instant crash.
This crash/shutdown is very infrequent, perhaps once a week since 10.5.
I use the Unsanity Haxies Fruitmenu, WindowShadeX and Menu Master. I don't think these are implicated, but don't know for sure. -
Powermac g4 shuts down during start up after installing Leopard and upgrade
I have a powermac g4 (agp), 1ghz, 120gig hd
I successfully installed Leopard. After install the updater came up so I updated the files. I think they were OSX update, quicktime, itunes, and a couple of others I can't recall. I was prompted to restart for updates and when I did it will get to the white screen with the grey apple and spinning wheel then it just shuts off. I have tried to start it up several times and it does the same thing each time. I can't start with the leopard disk since I can't get the dvd drive to open without it running. I've looked at other similar posts on this subject but don't see any that are similar to mine. Any help would be appreciated.Hi, Claire -

Couple of ways to work around that -
• Restart or boot the machine, immediately press the mouse button, keep it held down. This is a hardware command to the Mac to eject all removable media, which should open the drive tray. Insert the disk and close the tray, restart and press the C key.
• Try restarting or booting the machine, then immediately press the Option key (ideally before or simultaneous with the startup chime), keep it held down. This should bring up Startup Manager (a vivid blue screen with a few large icons showing). Once Startup Manager has fully loaded, press Command-. (Command-PeriodKey). This should open the optical drive tray. Insert the Leopard disk and close the tray; wait a bit for the drive to spin up; then click the circular arrow icon on the left. This will cause the machine to rescan the available buses and find the Leopard disk. Once that has displayed, click it to select it and then click the straight arrow icon on the right. It should now boot to that disk.

powermac G4 (agp/sawtooth), 1ghz....
The fastest G4 (AGP), aka "Sawtooth", machine shipped was 500MHz. If your machine is 1GHz, then it has either had a processor upgrade, or it is a later model. It helps us to know which it actually is. These articles can help you identify it -

The fact that it may have an AGP graphics card does not make it a G4 (AGP), or Sawtooth, model - all G4's after the G4 (PCI) model shipped with AGP graphics cards, including the Quicksilver and MDD models.
