Powermac g5 single-1.8ghz & new ram

i recently took upon a powermac g5 1.8ghz single core system with 1gb of memory and wanted to know if this memory would work inside of it aswell:

I don't think there is such a thing as "Mac-specific" RAM these days. However, some RAM may not meet Apple standards (which would be the same thing as RAM not meeting HP or Dell standards). It's best to buy from a place that gives a lifetime warranty, so you can get a replacement or refund if it doesn't work. It's even better if the vendor is Mac-oriented, so they have tested it themselves with Macs. I've never had a problem with RAM from OWC.

  • PowerMac G4 having problems with new RAM modules!

    dear all,
I’ve recently got 2 512 MB Ram module from a British eBay dealer, to be used on 2 different but very similar PowerMac G4 AGP Graphichs 400 MHz machines.
I installed the first module in my father’s Mac, and it works fine, no problems of any sort. Then, a few days later, I installed the other module in my PowerMac, and immediately it started behaving very erratically: some programs didn’t open at all and others crashed with no warning, I tried to run Rember but it soon get stuck. I assumed the Ram module was faulty, emailed the dealer (who’s been very helpful) and then sent it back to get a replacement. The new module arrived yesterday, I installed it... and it was even worse: as some programs didn’t open as soon as the new module was installed, I rebooted the PowerMac but it hasn’t been able even to load the OS anymore, it just stopped at the blue screen forever, once came out a black screen and a Darwin login, but nothing else. As soon as I removed the Ram module the PowerMac started to work perfectly again.I'd assume again there's something wrong in the Ram module, but isn't it too much unlucky to get 2 faulty modules one after the other, or maybe the problem could somewhere else, in my PowerMac?!?
Unfortunately I can't test the new module in my father's machine, as we live 700 kms apart.
    My hardware details are:
    Power Mac G4
    Model: PowerMac3,3
    CPU: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    1 CPU
    CPU Speed: 400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 896 MB
    Bus speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    thanks!

ok, I've now tried every possible combination... but with no success
First, taking out one of the "old" 128 MB I realized it was one of the High density DIMMs (chips on one side only) Japamac was mentioning, in total 2 of the 128 modules were like this. However, taking out one or both of them, or even having only the "new" 512 MB module in, hasn't changed much, sometimes the OS booted, sometimes not but there were always some programs not opening/crashing and Rember got stuck with an error message. With just the "new" module the booting stopped at the blue screen (only blue, no apple splash screen in the centre).
With the new module plus one of the old 128 MB modules (the one with chips on both sides) Rember got stuck very soon, and the error message was:

  • Powermac G5 single 1.8ghz, reset NVRAM and now mac runs from wrong drive

    Hi everyone -
I'd really appreciate some help with this. Recently, I had a second hard drive added (at a Tekserve repair shop) to my PowerMac G5 1.8gHz tower in the second slot, since the first drive seemed like it was starting to fail. They had set up the computer so that it ran off of the new hard drive, and the old one was accessed only from the new one. Since then, my computer had been working extremely well, until a few days ago, when it refused to boot up (no chime, no keyboard response, black or gray screen with apple logo, fans running on high). Upon reading some of the posts on this web site, it was suggest I reset my NVRAM, which is exactly what I proceeded to do in Open Firmware. It worked like a charm, thankfully, and my computer booted up. The only problem: it's running off of the old, slow hard drive again! Why? I don't know - I can only assume that the NVRAM reset also reset the route to the old hard drive. Does anyone have any step-by-step suggestions on getting my computer to run from the new hard drive again? And other suggestions to keep my computer from refusing to start up again? Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thank you thank you thank you!
    N

    Hi!
    Welcome to Apple discussions forum.
When you reset NVRAM in Open Firmware all parameters are reset to factory settings: to make short screen resolution and boot drive. So this is normal. Since you have a valid system on it. If you want the machine to boot from your newly installed drive even after a reset, invert the drives in the hard drive bay slots. Put the new drive in A slot and the old one in B slot.
An alternative is to press on the option(alt) key immediately after boot chime and to select the drive you want to boot from in the system picker.

  • Powermac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz RAM question

I purchased one stick of 1Gb RAM and installed it on the motherboard, but I didnt know it had to be installed in pairs so the computer wont recognize it. I made an order for a second stick and it should arrive in a couple of days. Can I use my computer with the one stick still in there, or do I need to remove it and install both at the same time?
    Powermac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    dfernandez86-
I am confused so this is probably a dumb question, but how can using 1 stick be configured as a pair?
I would take the new stick out and use it as originally configured. When you get the second stick have at it.

  • Power Mac G5 Refuses to start with new RAM!

I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8GHz June 2004. I know I read somewhere online that it takes 1GB sticks of RAM, and that it has to be dual channel. I went to Best Buy today and got myself 2 sticks of 1GB DDR PC3200 "Compatible with 400/333/266MHz" Dimms, and installed them in pairs. When I start them with or without my old memory, my mac starts up, makes no noises, but the fromt white LED light blinks 2 times, and does this repeadedly until I shutdown and install the old 512MB sticks. I need to get this new RAM to work in here, I just paid $112 total for 2 sticks, and I am not ready to go back to the store yet. Is there something I am missing here? Something I am not doing right?
    New RAM Specs:
    1GB DDR Dimm,Q PNY Technologies, PC3200 "Compatible with 400/333/266MHz"
I need to get this to work on my machine! Thanks for any help.

Is there something I am missing here?
Not all RAM is created equal and seldom does over the counter PC RAM work in a G5.
Buy and install ONLY guaranteed Mac compatible RAM.

    BTW, you paid too much.
When I start them with or without my old memory, my mac starts up, makes no noises, but the fromt white LED light blinks 2 times,
    That means "Incompatible RAM types".

  • G5 cuts out randomly after installling new RAM

    Hi all,
I have a Powermac G5 (1.8GHZ) and have just installed some new RAM taking it up to 6Gb. It worked fine for a couple of weeks and then myseriously shut down one day. When I tried to re-boot it turned on OK, chimed but then cut out a few seconds later. Thinking this would be the RAM I took it all out and restarted with my original setup. Everything worked fine... So then I thought I would add in the new ram gradually to see if I could find out which card wasnt working; I ended up adding the whole lot and it worked just fine.
Then all was fine for another couple of weeks and exactly the same thing happened. This time the computer only turned on properly once the old RAM was in the first two slots. Then I added the new RAM and all is fine again. Is this a problem with the RAM as it does seem to work..up to a point.... Any ideas??
    thanks for your help!

    Perhaps it's time for this......
Try running your Apple Hardware Test . It's not perfect, but may flag something.

  • New RAM problems with my Dual G4 1.25 MDD

Howdy I've had my Dual G4 1.25 MDD for 2 years and love it. I got it with 1GB RAM, thinking I was set. For Christmas I wanted to Upgrade the RAM to 2GB. from My PowerMac G4 Manual I knew I needed 2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's.
I went to DealRam (part of DealMac) and found 18004memory.com The price seemed great $39 per stick. I ordered it and within a week got 2x 512MB DIMM's. Problem was it was the Wrong RAM spec. I tried that RAM in my Mac 30 different ways and Everytime the computer either wouldn't boot, or it would suffer Kernel Protection Faults. One time it did boot up but the RAM only recognized as 2x 256MB DIMM's. I called the company, got an RMA and returned the RAM, this time they sent me 2 replacement DIMM's.... for a POWERBOOK, SO-DIMM's. I returned it again and finally Got from them the
2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's. They call it Hyperspeed RAM. Anywho, I powered down let the system cool over night and in the morning, popped it open, put the RAM in the 2 open slots DIMM2/J23 & DIMM3/J20. closed it back up and powered up. Everything was snappier, the boot was quicker and I checked About this Mac, it says 2GB. Apple System Profiler showed all 4 DIMM's and I thought everything was fine.
Computer ran great for hours, no issues. Everything seemed quicker. Computer went to sleep overnight, next day woke from sleep and Tried to use iTunes and during an extensive sort for Songs, the system Locked up. Nothing would work. Had to force restart. this time I tried to Run my favorite online Game, WoW and after it loaded and I started to play, within 5 mins the whole game locked up. The audio sound went into a sort of Loop, I couldnt force quit and had to force reboot. This happened several times. I finally decided to Run the Apple Hardware Test. The Quick test locked up after running 2mins. I let it sit for 1hr just in case it was still doing something and the progress bar and time never progressed. So i forced reboot, ran Test again this time as Extended test. at 8 min & 31 sec the test stopped and I got an Error Code, this time I wrote it down "2MEM/2/4: DIMM3/J20."
I guess that DIMM failed. I shutdown, popped open case, and removed DIMM3/J20 leaving the Original 1GB RAM and One of the 512MB Upgrades. I rstarted the Test again and Ran the Extended Test once more. It ran for 27mins & 24 secs and everything passed. So. 1.5GB is better than just 1GB. I powered down and powered back up to try and play WoW. Within 5 mins of loading game to play, everything locked up again.
So I took both of the new RAM out and left the Original 1GB RAM and ran Test everything was great no Errors. Rebooted, and went onto WoW again and was able to play for several hours. I quit game and shut down for night.
I have since Tried the 2x 512MB DIMM's in over 10 different variations in the computer with and without the original RAM and everytime I run a high end program or game (WoW, iTunes, and Photoshop), I get lock ups, crashes, and other screen weirdness.
I dont want to have to Return the Memory again. I am already out over $15 from s/h with RMA's.
PLEASE Any ideas what to do?
1 thing I noticed the RAM gets very very hot, when I've powered down tand removed the new RAM. I wonder if there is a cooling issue?
Anytime I put the Original 1GB RAM in, I dont have problems!

    Hi lz3broc,
Sounds very much like faulty RAM to me, I'm afraid. I'm not sure about the temperature it's running at, but if the surrounding DIMMs aren't having a problem then I would definitely point the finger at those new memory sticks not being up to scratch.
If you were convinced it was temperature related then you could always try putting heat spreaders on the memory to help with cooling, but as these stick (semi-permanently) to the RAM then you would never be able to return them.
My personal opinion is that you should send the RAM back and buy two new DIMMs from Crucial Technology. I only ever buy RAM made by them and I've never had a problem with it - it's the same stuff Apple themselves generally use and works a charm every time. Probably not the news you wanted to hear, but that's probably the only way you're going to get a stable machine with 2GB RAM.
    Hope that helps,
    Andy.

  • Dual 1.8GHz 2GB RAM not gonna run iMovie '08?

    Hello all,
I have heard that despite what the requirements for iMovie '08 are, it will run on a dual 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 (I swear I read that a fellow PMG5 1.8GHz user was doing it...with if memory serves, 3GB of RAM.) But do I really need 3GB of RAM? I wanna max this bad boy out but I dont have the money to do so at the moment. However its beyond me as to why it installed without a single problem. It even says it requires a dual 2.0GHz. But I just popped the iLife '08 DVD in the Mac and it installed everything on the DVD no questions asked. What I find a bit weird is I went to a friends house (he has a PMG5 Single 1.6GHz 4GB RAM) it wouldnt install. Ok so maybe his specs were too low. =( but this thing is super fast. (Im running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard hes still running Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger (I sold him my 10.4.6 DVD when I bought my 10.5.6 DVD) And we have blazing fast machines. Esp his! I wonder why his is faster...is Tiger really THAT MUCH older?
    Regards

    Hi-
RAM isn't as much of an issue as processor speed.
iLife 08 will install on most any machine, even G4's, but the ability to use iMovie successfully requires more CPU, thus the 2.0GHz stated in the system requirements.
Anyhow, it wouldn't be the first time a machine with lower than recommended CPU speed installed iMovie 08:
    http://tom.goskar.com/2007/09/03/imovie-08-on-a-18ghz-single-processor-g5/
    Some ineteresting discussion here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=338836
Only 512MB of RAM is necessary, but Apple recommends 1GB.
However, RAM becomes necessary when manipulating large files.
2GB is really as low as one should go..... and more is better with graphics and video related work.
The 3GB issue is not RAM, but hard drive space.
The software suite simply requires that much space on the hard drive.
Tiger is faster than Leopard on most all PPC machines.
Leopard has its sweet spots, but uses more RAM, CPU and graphics card than Tiger.
This may explain why a slower machine "feels" faster.

  • Smart configuration for new RAM?

    hello-
I've got a PowerMac G5 PPC (from a few years back) with 8 DIMM slots. I ordered it from factory with 2 gigs of RAM, which are installed in 2 pairs of 512 sticks. I just ordered 2 additional gigs of RAM as a pair of 1 gig sticks.
here's my question. the existing RAM is already in pair slots 1 and 2. and when i get the new ram, I'll be occupying pair slots 3. Should i install the additional RAM in slots 3, or move the 512's in slots 1 to slots 3 and install the new RAM right into slots 1.
Does it make a difference? I know there's a particular access order and maybe having the 1 gig sticks in slots 1 might improve performance even a little bit more....
    thanks!

  • New RAM stopped my Kernel Panics on a MacBook

I upgraded my Duo Core 1.83gHZ White MacBook to 2GB of RAM almost three years ago when purchased new.
Sometime after upgrading to Leopard I started having frequent kernel panics. I ran Memtest several times and it never found a problem. I blamed Leopard and/or the MacBook itself as the machine was very stable under Tiger.
About a month ago re-installed the MB's original 512MB of RAM and ran the machine for a few days without a single KP. Running a MB with 512MB or RAM is painful, so say the least...
I ordered two 1GB sticks from a well-known company and the MacBook has run kernel panic free ever since, about three weeks now.
Unfortunately the old RAM was not a lifetime warranty product. It cost me $176 back then. The new RAM was $30. :-O
I hope others can learn from my painful lesson. I guess my biggest surprise is that the RAM seemingly went bad at some point.

just had mine mended from apple

  • Do I need to go through Apple to install new RAM?

I currently have 4GB of RAM installed onto my MacBook Pro, I have been looking into getting new RAM 8GB however, I wanted to know will I void my warranty or anything if I purchase and install the RAM from a sourceother than Apple?

Installing non-Apple RAM won't void your warranty, even if you install it yourself. I've upgraded the RAM in three computers (1 iBook, 1 MacBook Pro and 1 PowerMac), bought the RAM from sources other than Apple, and I've never had problems with them. Just make sure it's the right type of RAM (your manual should tell you) and you'll be fine.
On a side note, make sure that all the RAM is the same speed; if you buy 1333 MHz RAM and install it in a second slot along with 1067 MHz RAM, it will all run at 1067 MHz.

  • Single 2.8ghz Benchmarks?

    Hi,
Has anyone got any speed test results from the new 4 core single 2.8ghz Mac Pro yet?
All the test i can find are forr the 2.8ghz standard 8 core model.

Strange that you ask this...They just put this on the Macworld site a day or so ago. I hope this helps you.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/131782/2008/01/macprobench2.html
The quad core 2.8 looks pretty strong. It beats the previous 2.66, and stacks up well with most tasks.

  • 865 GVM3-V restarts before booting OS after adding new RAM

I had RAM in only one DIMM slot which is TwinMos 512MB 400MHz (CL3).
I wanted some performance upgrade. I bought a new DDR RAM, Transcend 400 MHz 512 (CL3) and installed into the second DIMM slot of my MainBoard. After the moment powering on CPU restarts continuously just showing in the RAM size as 1GB (1024....), then showing the Primary IDE master disk and slave, then showing press del to enter setup, F8 to select boot disk and then reboots. Again it continues same. If I select del it does not enter into BIOS setup, simply reboots. It never goes upto booting the OS.
As I thought RAM might not have been fit correctly into the slot I unplugged them and then reinstalled. No result, restart continues.
I assumed if new RAM is damaged one. So I connected both of the RAMs seperately for test. They works just fine as single. But when I connect them both something goes wrong and it restarts..
I thought if the problem was with GRUB (I don't see such possibilites actually) I made windows partition as active so that it can boot into Windows XP directly without going through GRUB. No positive result, restart continues.
Then I guessed if there is a problem with combination of DDR RAMs of different manufacturers. I tested them(the two RAMs) attaching into another PC(MainBoard: Intel D101GGC) together to check if problem is the combination. There was no problem shown by that PC, boots and works just fine.
I'm in headache with this kind of hardware problem as I have some other tasks to do still this is giving me pain. Why shouldn't it work in my PC!
Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.

It's almost impossible to trace back the panic report to a specific cause, but it's highly suspicious that you started experiencing problems after installing new RAM.
It's also strange that your RAM has no stated VendorID, Part Number or Serial Number.
I would return this memory poste haste.
Alternatively, if the DIMMs are from Kingston's ValueRAM range, just dump them in the garbage because that's where they belong. While you're there, look for any other RAM that someone else has thrown away - chances are its ValueRAM, too (hint: I have never seen a single ValueRAM DIMM work in any of my systems, so I avoid them like the plague - shame, since Kingston used to have such a good reputation).

  • G4 Quicksilver won't recognize new RAM

    Hi
I found a similar thread through searching the archives, but figured I should start a new one. I have a 2002 Quicksilver G4 with 1GB RAM running OSX 10.4, that still runs surprisingly well (at least compared to my PC). I wanted to max the RAM out to 1.5GM and upgrade to Leopard, so I bought a 512MB DIMM from RamDirect. I installed it and it doesn't work. I tried various combinations in the slots, still no go. I even placed it in Slot 0 as the only RAM DIMM and the computer wouldn't boot. I have the latest updates to everything, as far as I know. Here are my system specs below - DIMM2 shows empty whether the new RAM is installed or not.
RamDirect seems to be a reputable dealer, they've been around for a while. The Ebay auction lists the RAM as new, Apple-certified 512MB 64x64-75 3.3v PC133 SDRAM 168pin DIMM that is compatible with a variety of G4/G3 models shown on the page (including mine). It doesn't say anything about buffered or un-buffered. The new RAM looks exactly like mine, and is labeled Samsung PC133 Single Bank. My system profiler shows my RAM as PC133-333, no ECC reference, so I'm not sure what I have.
I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything before contacting RamDirect and saying that the RAM defective. I appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    Barry

OS X is "picky" about RAM quality, so you may have gotten some substandard RAM. Unless the RAM is totally defective, it will probably still operate in a PC.
Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM
Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
One thing you might try. Get a soft rubber eraser & gently rub the RAM contacts, in the outside chance that there may be some contamination (from finger contact/handling).
     Cheers, Tom
