PowerMac G5 vs. New Intel 24" 2.4/2.8 iMac and FCP

Does anyone use the new iMac with the latest version of FCP? I was wondering if it was fast enough to work with FCP and Motion 3? Thanks!

Hi Mark Paul Corderio;
Since your question is about Final Cut Pro, you might get more answers if you post over in the Final Cut Pro Forum.

  • Could someone suggest a procedure describing how I should migrate my iTunes files from old an older Motorola-based PowerMac to a new Intel-based Mac Pro?

My problem concerns migrating, or moving my iTunes files from a Motorola-based G4 PowerMac OS X 10.4.11 iTunes 9.2.1 (4) to a new Intel-based Mac Pro running OS X 10.8.4 iTunes 11.0.4.
    Context Summary:
    1.  Migration assistants on my old and new macs are not compatible.
    2.  My older mac has my iTunes library stored on an external firewire disk.
    3.  Part (but not all) of my iTunes files are also resident/stored on my iPod classic.
    4.  Finally, I need OS X 10.4.11 on my old mac and cannot upgrade it to OS X10.5.
Proposed method A: Is there a way to transfer my playlists from my Motorola Mac to my Intel Mac?  If so, could I then connect my external firewire disk (containing my iTunes library) to my new mac, and then tell iTunes (on new mac) to use my iTunes library located on my external firewire disk?
Proposed method B: Would my chances for success improve if I used my iPod classic to transfer iTunes files from old Mac to new?
Worst Case Proposal C:  I could start from scratch and recreate iTunes playlists and library on new mac.... time consuming proposal but it's possible.  (Please don't suggest this proposal unless no other viable choices exist for me.)
Or have I missed something?  Is there another procedure I should use?
    Please advise, and thank you.

    Hello Chris,
Answer to your iTunes library question:  By iTunes Library, I mean my iTunes Media folder only; not the entire /iTunes/folder with iTunes media folder inside.
BTW: Your pointer to ht4889 was very helpful, and sharing the folder, then copying it over firewire interface from old to new mac was most useful.
However, now with my entire iTunes folder (including iTunes media folder) moved to new mac, I remain unclear as to how I should configure iTunes on the new mac so that it can know about and use these copied files.  I understand using iTunes preferences, how to point iTunes to my media folder, but don't know what other iTunes operations are necessary for iTunes to pick up where I left off with my old mac.
Is there any file conversion necessary?
    Or inside iTunes, should I:
    File->Library->Organize Library?  or
    File->Library->Export Library?  or
    File->Library->Import Playlist?
Please advise and thank you again for your help.
As you might imagine, I put a great deal of time building my iTunes library, and would feel very blue if I need to build it again from scratch on my new mac.
    So long for now.

Thats not actually correct, the Pentium Dual Core series E5xxx replaces the Pentium Dual Core E2xxx series, The Celeron Dual Core E3xxx series replaces the Celeron Dual Core E1xxx series.

  • New Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz Nehalem Quad and FCP and Compressor

When something goes well for a change it deserves its rightful place in the posts of this discussion forum. I just completed my hook-up and an initial test on my new Nehalem quad Mac Pro, and I must say that once in a while things do work out.
    1. The noise level is non-existant. I literally had to check to make sure that the unit was on. This in comparision to my G5 which sounds like the SST on take off. I might now actually hear the audio on my video monitor.
    2. The speed is INCREDIBLE! Prior to shutdown, I ran a test by sending an hour's worth of mixed XDCAM EX/HDV footage to Compressor on my G5. At the highest quality 2 hour setting for DVD encoding (double pass) it took the G5 12.5 hours to encode. Running the same clip through the same version of Compressor in the Mac Pro took approximately 45 minutes. This roughly translates into a 16.5X increase in speed over my dual 2.5 Ghz processor G5. I'M SOLD! And for now, the Honeymoon continues.
The only drawback (besides the price) is that I had to buy a $100 adapter/power supply to enable my old 25" Cinema screen run on the new video card.
    Thanks

Mac Pro 1,1 (all Mac Pro models come with Xeon).
What matters is cleaning the X1900 of dust and from clogging intake and exhaust - every three months.
Run Apple Hardware Test from your OEM DVD.
Install SmcFanControl 2.x and keep the fans rpm to 800-900 instead of 499-599 base as minimum at least.
Monitor temperatures with Hardware Monitor or similar.
Have you been looking to see in System Profile: Memory if there are any errors?
Normally, clone backup update weekly and running Disk Warrior at the same time should be done to spot disk directory and file system problems before they get worse. Or any time your system freezes.
Freeze... and what you have 90% of the time is a corrupt directory and other errors.
At which time you may need to restore if you can't fix the problem. And don't rely on only Apple DU First Aid to find and repairs any and all errors.
For Snow Leopard maybe a flashed ATI 4870 to replace the X1900.
You may need to start over from scratch to get things stable once you find what is happening, and work with a test system until then with some trial and error. Format/initialize and clean install of 10.6.x for the OEM 10.4.7+.
At nearly 4 yrs now since it came out, not sure if you have plans for a new one.

  • New iMac and FCP?

Does anyone use the new iMac with the latest version of FCP? I was wondering if it was fast enough to work with FCP and Motion 3? Thanks!

    Hi Mark,
The new iMac should be sufficient for casual Final Cut Pro use, but I would not recommend it if you rely on it for a living. As for Motion 3, it should be able to scrape by on it, but a Mac Pro is really better suited for it. As long as you have a few GBs of RAM in your iMac, both programs should run not badly.

  • Programs on new Intel Systems

Probly the wrong are to ask, but will old software still run on the new intel systems, ie if i ahve photoshop and were to install on the new macbook would it work, or will i need to get a version that runs on the intel systems, i did'nt fully understand the explaination on the main site
    Thanks

Existing PowerPC applications are run under the new "Rosetta" technology - basically an instruction interpreter at system level. However, this is essentially emulation so some performance loss will be apparent.
This is intended as a stop gap measure (like the classic eviroment) while developers recompile their apps as universal or Intel binaries.
In conclusion, yes they will work but may be slow - the faster performance of the new Core Duos may mean you won't notice the difference.

  • G5 Server Failed howto bring users over to new intel server?

    Hi,
I have(had) a G5 acting as Open directory master managing ~200 users with networked home directory. The G5 died today, seems to be a power supply issue, and I want to get our new intel server to get these users up and running. The hard drive is fine from th G5, so I can pull that data no problem, I was just wondering what the easiest way to pull out the user data from that machine and get it into the Intel server. Do I need to get those drives in another PPC machine and export it out that way? Any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I also have this problem and I haven't had the time to find out what's wrong (not using homefolders yet).
I don't even see the LDAP server in Directory Access.
The server is setup from scratch (no user accounts imported).
    What about passwords?
They probably isn't preserved when exporting importing accounts.
I have followed an AFP548 article about how to achieve that.
It has "saved me" several times when having LDAP problems:

  • New intel iMac 20" arriving - how to transfer data from old powermac G3

I have a new intel 20" iMac arriving this week. How can I easily transfer the data from my existing powermac G3 (that does not have USB or firewire, or even a CD-RW drive)?
    Thanks!

If you are willing to spend 20-30 bucks, you can either by a firewire card for the g3, or spend a little more and buy a firewire enclosure and put your hard drive from your G3 into it. If you go the firewire card method, put the G3 into target disk mode (assuming it supports target disk mode) and connect it to your iMac. If you go the external enclosure route, then just plug the drive into your iMac. The first time you start up, the computer will ask if you want to transfer files from an older computer. Select Yes (assuming your g3 is running a later version of OS X. It will then allow you to select the type of files to transfer over. If your g3 is running OS 9 or an early version of OS X then you will have to just copy files over yourself.

  • PowerMac G5 vs new Mac mini?

I hope this is the right place to ask this (maybe I ought to put the question in the Powermac G5 forum as well...)
I currently have a G5 Dual 2 GHz, and it's definitely starting to show it’s age! I have been looking at getting a MacPro but the cost is prohibitive. And then I thought (as I have a screen (two actually), mouse and keyboard, plus external drives etc, why not try the Mini?
So I guess the main question is would a new Intel Mac Mini run/operate faster than an old G5 or would I still be looking at the spinning beach ball of death? The most CPU intensive thing I use is Final Cut Express; would the Mini handle that ok?
    Any other ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks!!
    Andy

I don't own an Intel mini myself, but I buy and set them up for users in my networks from time to time. I recently had my G5 DP in the office when a new 1.83 C2D mini arrived, and in a direct comparison, the G5 gave a benchmark score of 78, the mini gave 96. In reality, since benchmarks don't really exercise the system the way real applications do (and in particular don't cause a lot of paging activity so the relative differences in hard drive performance are not really measured) the mini was perhaps 10% faster. Just to give you some solid data!
And it's not that they are not good systems - I never cease to be impressed and pleased at how well such small systems really perform - but if you are going to spend money, you really need to be looking for something that notably outperforms the G5. An iMac would, for example. In the same benchmarking test, a 2.4GHz 24" Aluminium iMac turned in a score of 149.
In terms of the G5, upping the RAM would certainly help - not a massive boost in performance, but making the system smoother to use. Final Cut Express is really not a particularly demanding application in terms of system hardware though, so beachballing suggests there is something awry.
To clear caches and logs (and indeed perform some general housekeeping) I would generally suggest a simple utility such as YASU (http://jimmitchelldesign.com/projects/yasu/). Set it to all tasks and make sure nothing is running. When it's done it will force a restart, which will be slower than usual, after which the system will run a little slow for a time as it rebuilds caches. YASU performs other tasks that can help with system performance too.
It is true that in MacOS you don't really need to defragment or optimize the drive, but that isn't always true if you handle lots of large files such as video. Those can cause fragmentation over time.
A full erase and install is a good way to test the system overall however, because it returns everything to the 'out-of-the-box' condition. If the system performs well (or at least better) when that is done, you will know much more clearly whether it needs replacing or not!

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD and Soundtrack Pro 1.0.2 and new Intel iMac

I have the both FCP and Soundtrack Pro versions listed above. I'm thinking about picking up a new Intel iMac. Will I have to pay $199 or $99 to upgrade to FCP Studio. I just purchased Soundtrack Pro recently, if I could upgrade for just $99 and get Shake and iDVD that would be a deal...probably still a deal for $199.
I also use CS2, seems Adobe is a little confusing to me. Will I have to pay to get CS2 native for the Intel iMac? Any idea on cost and timeliness.
Separately, how will FCP run on a 20" Intel iMac once upgraded to Universal version, which I'll have to do, since it won't run under Rosetta? I currently only do Mini DV but should I plan on getting the extra video memory now, planning on eventually going into the HD video realm?
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments...thinking about getting the Intel iMac via CompUSA with their interest free deals tomorrow.

Powebook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Happy with Mac...don't want to lose the ease!

well, same situation here, I was about to order a Macbook Pro but then decided to saty with our beloved G platform. the reason is that it will take some time for our Pro Apps to become fully /natively compatible with Intel and I just can't wait that much.
    as for your question about using an iMac with FCP, the answer would be a;
"Yes" if you're going to work with DV only footage (using an external HD for your captured media is a must). and a
"No" if you plan to work with HD material in the future. there you've got no choice but a PowerMac G5 with a fast Graphic Card and a special SD/HD card or box to capture the footage.
résumé: if you're a serious FCP user, go for something expandible, go for a Powermac.

  • NEW INTEL G5'S

Does anyone know when they will be availiable??
I am getting ready to purchase a G5 and would like to wait for the new models
    thanks
      Mac OS X (10.3)

The new Mactels are 32 bit unfortuantly.
yeah right. If you believe the new speed stats for intel imacs vrs G5's, then you can't escape the conclusion that the G5 is slow and old technology.
Of course it's part of marketing to get you to buy the newest greatest fastest thing.
Why buy a quad? It's a waste of money.
Because it has four PPC cores and there isn't a better price for performance option available anywhere that can match it. The closest is a Dell quad Xeon at about $1200 more.
There is no Quad MacTel yet and it will be some time before that appears and no guarranty the prices will be the same either, now that Intel has little competition since IBM left the stage.
Universal binaries will be issued for all new software coming out, that means a PPC version and a Intel version will be on all new software.
Buying a Quad gives the best bang for buck especially for those with present software, as all Mac's and average computers will be going dual core standard. With a Quad one gets two dual cores, can run all the PPC based software (no need to buy new versions and no "Rosetta" performance loss) and all the future versions using universal binaries.
Remember the new iMactel is 2-3x faster because it uses a newer, faster dual core processor compared to a single G5 processor that came before it. So at least it should be 2x as fast, 2-3x is rather vague actually but could hold some truth as it is a newer processor and speed gains are part of that. But it's not really all that much faster as portrayed. Just imagine if the previous iMac G5 was a dual core instead? Then we might be seeing a slight performance increase if any at all as any two cores working together is faster than one core.
The new iMactels should have (and will be) compared equally to a dual core PowerMac G5 to actually see if these new Intel chips are faster or pure marketing BS.
The new MacBook Pro uses the same newer faster dual core, but the Powerbooks before it used a single outdated G4 processor, so no wonder it's 4-5x faster.
Marketing is a lot like propoganda, disinformation is often used.
Until the Quad Mactels arrive by the end of this year along with all the new versions of Mactel ready software, the PPC Quad is the best buy as one can run everything and get huge performance right now.
Of course if one waits there will always be a newer faster machine.

  • Should I exchange my I Book G4 for the New Intel IMAC

I just bought an G4 i book on 12-31 and maybe i should have waited untill after the conference to get a mac computer, but i really wanted the G4, and i been wanting to switch from PC to mac for a while, I guess i just chose the wrong time. I am not sure what to do now, should i take back my ibook and get an imac? I feel really dumb about getting the G4, even though it is great. I know they are going to come out with an intel one this year. Can anyone help me out and let me know what i should do? Any advice would be great. Thanks
    I Book G4   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    Hi Daniel,
To your response about the programs not being able to work with the new Intels is true for the most part.Apple Developer Connection for a long time has had links on how to change program's code into Universal Binary. Many companies have switched their programs over to Universal Binary. Microsoft Office is available to work on the PowerMac. The PowerMac also works with FileMaker Pro and Quicken. I don't use MS Office or anything made by MS because I have iWorks '05, which is even better. It is fully compatible will MS Office.
I am getting a PowerMac solely because I need a faster and more powerful machine. I have 8000 photos (2000 on iBook 6000 on iMac) and I can't fit and edit them all at the same time. I need the portability and the power to run the "pro" applications.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
PS I wouldn't say upgrade it to an Intel Mac unless you need to. The new Intel computers come with MS Office Test Drive, so I am guessing it works

  • Acrobat XI Pro performance with new Intel Core M processor

EDIT 21-Feb-2015: the issue seems to be with the power limitation of the new Intel Core M Broadwell processor. Enabling it in "full performance" mode significantly increases the performance. Nonetheless, in whichever power mode the computer is set, Microsoft Reader has no issue with any of the operations listed below.
    Hi,
I'm running Acrobat XI Pro on Windows 8.1 64-bit with high-res display (3200x1800, Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro), which uses the new Intel Core M Broadwell processor.
Zooming in and out and panning on the main application is very laggy, and full screen is EXTREMELY laggy. Also very noticeable delays in scrolling and page to page.
The computer is brand new, out of the box, no viruses or other software dragging the system down. Also, if I open the same files on the Microsoft Reader app, there is no lag at all in doing these operations.
I have found on the forum that some people have had lag and disabled Protected View and Enhanced Security. However, Protected View is not enabled on my installation, and disabling Enhanced Security has no effect.
Right now I would say that the zoom/pan performance is worse even than on Reader on a 5 year old Windows XP machine I tried to compare to.
Is there some other settings in Acrobat XI that could cause this issue?
    Thanks!
P.S. I couldn't find a more appropriate group other than "Acrobat Installation & Update Issues" as I didn't find a troubleshooting group or anything like that, but can re-categorize.
