PowerMac MDD 1.25 Dual G4 won't start..

Abruptly this PowerMac MDD 1.25Ghz Dual G4 won't start up. The button lights up, but there is no other reaction from the PowerMac. I have already reset the PMU on the logic board. I have replaced the CMOS battery. I removed the hard drive and copied important data off it. Any other suggestions before taking it to my local Authorized Apple Repair Station.

wouldn't it be more prudent to just replace the "wind tunnel" power supple
As a matter of troubleshooting, no.
After testing and confirming, yes.
Used and refurbished power supplies are available on eBay.
The 360W MDD PSU, having revamped fans, is the desireable one.
I'm thinking of just taking it in and have them check it out.
A third party repair service might be fine. Apple will just say it's too old.
I'm sure I can replace the power supply myself.

Where is this capacitor located? inside the power supply?
Inside, where it is very dangerous for the non-trained to access and repair.
PSU components hold deadly charges long after they are unplugged.

  • Dual G4 Won't start up with ethernet internet connection plugged in

    Hi,
My Dual 533mhz won't start up when the ethernet cord is pluged in. This recently started happening out of the blue (at least, I can't recall doing anything that might cause this). When I leave the ethernet cord in, the computer starts up with a network disk icon flashing and never goes away. When I don't have the ethernet cord plugged in, the computer still blinks with the network disk, but eventually changes to an OS 9 question mark folder, where it blinks some more and finally boots up normally.
The ethernet cord is one from a router.

Open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences, select your hard disk as the startup disk, and quit System Preferences.

  • G4 Dual 800 won´t start normally.

Hi, my mac doesn´t start well. When I press the start button, I can hear the startup sound and then nothing happens, I mean, the computer is on, the fan is running, the disks too, but the computer doesn´t start. I try for several times and then Surprise!, i can see a gray screen with a folder in the middle, an then the computer start. Once the computer is started it works perfect. Pressing the start button while on in order to put the computer to sleep works ok, I mean the computer goes to sleep and I can wake up it as usual. But if I have to shut down I have the same problem again, won´t start after ten or more times. I tried to reset the pram, and all with this cuda switch. I tried also to change the battery, but everithing goes the same. How could I get this Hardware test?, comes with the tiger original disk?, what could I do?
    Thanks in advance.

    Good Day:
It sounds like corrupted files in your start up disk.
Try to repair the disk. Using disk utilities. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility.
If this does not work, I would highly recommend downloading and creating a boot disk from Alsoft: Disk Warrior.

I had a problem when my G4 (Dual 20inch monitors / 1 TB exernal Drive(s) / 200GB ATA Drive / 1 GB Ram ) would start to boot and shut down after a few min. I checked Pram / power / Batteries etc…
I booted from the OX Cd and tried to repair using Disk Utilities, but got a scary message that the disck "could not be repaired"
I used my Disk Warrior CD, booted from that and repaired the mac Hard Drive. My system has worked fine from then on. I can’t tell you how a few corrupted directories / files can ruin your day.
Give this a shot, and let us know if this helps.

  • Help!  Dual G5 won't start for more than 2 seconds

That's it... It shut itself down a little while ago and now will not start. Upon hitting the button, the light flashes once and goes out, the fans surge briefly, and then everything goes dead again. Removing the power cord makes a relay click.
I've tried leaving the power cord off for several minutes, disconnecting all attached devices, removing added RAM, disconnecting an added hard drive, zapping PRAM (which didn't seem to do anything since it wasn't on long enough)and nothing helps. There's a mild burnt electrical smell.
I have a very bad feeling about this. Anything to try other than a trip to the shop?

One of the processors is burnt. Talked to the shop today and they say the machine boots fine on the single remaining processor with the bad processor removed. No power-up if it's left in.
I'm more than a little miffed that I need to spend ~$600 on a computer that's just 2 years old. Collecting dust in my basement I've got an Apple IIe, some Mac SEs, a Mac II, a Centris and maybe a couple more Macs I can't recall. All still work fine. I've been using Macs since 1985 and have grown used to the idea that they just work forever, well past their useful lifespans.
This experience is a wake-up call that we're in a new world. Buyer beware.

  • G4 1.42 dualie still won't start after replacing power supply.

This Machine was turning off randomly for about a week when it just stopped working. The power light would go on when pressed, but nothing happens.
Tried plugging into a wall socket instead of power strip. Nothing. Reset PMU. Nothing. Battery is good.
Read though many reports and determined the culprit was the Power Supply. The power supply was replaced with original Apple part. The problem remains. Press the power button and the light goes on, release it and the light goes off. Nothing spins up, no chimes, nothing.
Now I'm reading it may be the power button - someone solved the problem by attaching an older keyboard with a start button. I don't have one to test.
I don't want to keep shooting in the dark on this one.
    Thanks for any help.

Hi wagsfx, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Good research so far!
Now I'm reading it may be the power button - someone solved the problem by attaching an older keyboard with a start button. I don't have one to test.
Too bad you're not closer, I have 5 I don't need, because buying 8 was cheaper than buying on on eBay!
Anyway, my suspicion is that if that KB thing works it is the Power Button assembly, but that other things will start going wrong shortly there after.
It's likely not any consolation, but I think the MDDs are the worst G4 ever turned out, I wish I could have my $20+K back from buying, repairing, & upgrading them, since all 3 are now dead as a doornail.
Hang on though, there's many far greater experts here than I, & I hope they can drop in with some better ideas for you!

  • PowerMac G5 2.0 dual processor video Card installation

I installed a Radeon7000 64M DDR AGP VGA/TVO/DVI-I card in my powerMac G5 2.0 dual processor.  I starts up with both screens fine, but freezes immediatley on startup.  I started up in Safe Mode and it was fine.  I repaired my permissions then Zapped the pram and it will start up fine and even got to adjust dual displays before it froze.  It will not start up and operate correctly.  I know Mac has the drive in its operating system. I am just frustrated because all I wanted to do was used an extra VGA screen that I have and the installed card only had one DVI and an Apple screen conector that I cannot get an adapter to VGA for.

Hello, are you sure that card can support 2 monitors your size?
I don't think that card suports core video or maybe even quartz, both essential for 10.5.x, but disabled in Safe Mode.
BTW, not sure what adapter is...

G4 MDD 1.25 Dual won't boot unless door is left open.
If you shut the door, the power switch light turns off and the computer freezes. I'm running a house fan over the board to keep it cool. It's not running hot, was not running hot.
Reset PMU, checked all cables for pinching, inspected the power switch cable, reseated power plug on main board, removed optical drive,
    tested ram...
Otherwise the machine is rock solid. I'm stumped, but thinking power supply......

Had the exact same problem myself. After looking at this topic I noticed that one of the 5V cables was getting jammed in the bottom left hand corner of the door. The case had cut the insulation open and was obviously causing short circuit when the case closed. I put some tape around the damaged cable and tucked it inside the case. Problem solved!

  • I use a 2003 FW800 MDD desktop, with dual 1.25 GHz processors, and OS10.4.11, and with native Bluetooth card, won't recognize a newer Bluetooth Headphone set as an Input or Output device in System Preferences

I use a Mac 2003 FW800 MDD desktop with dual 1.25 GHz processors, 2 GB memory, and a native Bluetooth card installed. I use OS10.4.11.  The FW800 was the only MDD that could use Bluetooth natively, as an optional installation.  I use the installed Bluetooth to run an Apple Aluminum Keyboard, and would like to use it with a new (2010) Samsung SBH-600 Bluetooth Headphone set, but, although the set will pair with the computer, and is recognized in both the System Profiler, and the Bluetooth section of System Preferences, it is not recognized in the Sound preferences section of System Preferences as either an Input or Output device.  Only the installed external Apple speakers are recognized.  I'd like to know if there is anything that can be done to make the Bluetooth system installed work with these headphones - either something that can be changed in the computer settings, or an added external Bluetooth device with different Bluetooth capabilities.

It it may be that you are running either an outdated BT software or the firmware of the card is not up to date.
What version is your BT software? Is it later than 1.5?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1209
    Firmware:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL354
Along with the firmware, it is likely that the headphones require a later BT revision than you are running. The headphones need rev.2.
You may need to move to Leopard for support.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL889
It also may be that headphone support is limited to iChat or the like in Tiger.....
If you go to a USB BT dongle, D-Link often gets the nod as having native compatibility in OS X.

  • G4 MDD won't start up after new memory and DVD drive Install

After watching an online video demonstration on how to add RAM and install a new DVD drive in a G4, I decided it was something I could do myself. It all seemed to go well, but after I put it back together and plugged it back in, the light comes on when I press on the power button, but the computer won't start up.
I'm running 10.4.? and I just installed an extra 512 MB RAM and a Samsung DVD+R in the lower drive slot. I also looked at some other posts/threads and decided to reset the PMU button. -No change after that.
I'm trying to get this computer in working order to pass onto my mom when I visit her next week.
    Any suggestions?

I have had some of the same problems that you have experienced. I have a dual 1.25 g PowerMac w/ 2 g of ram, the Superdrive, and 4 separate drives. My main boot drive was a 160 GB WD Caviar. I also had a 160 Maxtor and (2) 120 GB WD caviares (the 120s were raided for video. The 160 WD started giving me some problems so I decided to replace it with a 500 GB WD Caviar Blue. I installed it in the machine and initialized it. I left the jumper on the drive in the cable select position. I tried to backup using Carbon Cloner and kept getting and error on one file. I re-initialed the drive to make sure it was wiped clean. I then started to back up the old drive file by file. I kept getting messages saying the drive was full. THat wasn't true as there wasn't anything on it. After several attempts to move files, I decided to put the machine back together without the new drive.
Now the real fun begins. I had trouble with the machine booting. I zapped the PRAM and did everything I could think of to get it to boot. It wouldn't so I figured it was something I did. I let the machine sit for a day or two to give me some time to calm down. I read some articles in this support section as well as some articles on several sites I could find. The machine would not only not boot but it would not even beep. I opened the machine up and tried to clean out some of the dust in it. hen I removed the battery and let it sit for a few hours. Then I held the PMMU button on the motherboard in for a long 5 seconds. I put the battery back and waited an hour or so. I tried to start the machine and got nothing. It doesn't beep but the monitor lights up as it thinks the machine is on. I've all but given up on the machine.
Now I know this is long but I have another problem. I took out the 160 GB WD boot drive and used one of the external devices called an Ultradock v4 to connect the drive to my G4 Powerbook. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to back my 160 WD boot Drive to an external 750 gb Maxtor drive that is partitioned into 3 drives. I backed up the 160 WD Boot drive to it. I didn't pay attention to how much space was used on one of the partitions. I then backed up the Maxtor to the 500 gb WD Caviar Blue. The original WD 160 gb drive took up about 197 gb on the Maxtor which in turn took about the same space on the new WD 500 gb Caviar blue. I am at a loss as to why more space is taken up by backing up from a 160 gb drive to a roughly 225 gb partition when it was less than 160 used originally.
    Any ideas?

  • Dual G4 won't turn on. Power button just blinks

Hi everyone, first off I'd like to say that I know there are a number of similar posts to this but I read many of them and I think mine is a little different.
Earlier today my Dual 1.42 G4 powermac was on and was in the screen saver. I pressed the sleep button on my Apple 23" display and nothing happened. I waited about ten seconds and, needing to leave, pressed it again and left. Well, I returned now and found the computer was off. I pressed the power button on the display and nothing happened. It just blinked. I then pressed the power button the computer and it did the same, just blinked for a second.
I just followed Texas Mac Man's directions from other post by unplugging the power cable and removing the battery. Waited ten mins and tried power it up and nothing happened. Same issue. There are no start up chimes/beeps and the fans do not spin up.
I also found a link that showed how some powermac's power button go bad and that a usb keyboard with a power button can start it up. My display has a power button and it couldn't turn the computer on so this isn't my issue, right?
Some info about the comp: Dual 1.42, OS 10.5, everything stock except a ram stick I added three years ago. Thanks for your help in advance and can't wait to get this old champ running again.

I debated starting yet another "my G4 won't start" thread since my problem is more similar to Tammy in MO's.
My Dual 1 Ghz G4 (Mirrored Door) won't start up when I press the power button. The power button usually does not light up upon touch. The computer does not shut down on me when I am working on it.
The only way to get it to start up again is to unplug the power cord from the back of the computer for a minute or two (not long at all) and then plug it back in again. If I do this, I can run the computer all day without any problems. Once it goes to sleep or shuts down, then I have to unplug it again and start over.
    I have done the following:
    Replaced the battery.
    Reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Reset the PMU:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939?viewlocale=en_US
as well as done the PSU test:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9301520&#9301520
This last test yielded no voltage results, best I can tell.
Truth be told, I don't think I did the PSU test properly since the ends of my voltage tester are probably a bit too large to properly test the pins.
    http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/4280/fw800pinout.png
I even tried to discharge the power from the logic board:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=582223#582223
BTW: The red led on the logic board does come on and stay on when the unit is powered up and running.
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and if anyone knew how to solve the problem.
At this point since this machine is relegated to my wife and kids so for me it's more annoying than anything else. Any other suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Chris

  • PowerMac G4 won't start, pull Hard Drive?

My PowerMac G4 Dual 450 (Digital Audio) won't start-up. It's dead. I've replaced the battery and reset PMU, still nothing.
I also have a new iMac. Can I pull the hardrive out of my old G4 and put it in an external case and access it with the iMac? Will the iMac recognize it? Anything else I need to do?
    Thanks.

Get an external Firewire case & install the HD. Firewire is much faster than USB 2.0, and currently, unless you have a USB 2.0 PCI card, your USB 1.1 is very, very slow. You should be able to access all the files.
Be sure you followed Apple's PMU reset procedure. Also, look at the tips on this site Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • How large a hard drive can stock PowerMac MDD take?

It's me again. Great forum -- thanks.
I want to install a 160GB HDD in my PowerMac MDD. Do I need a special PCI controller card or will the onboard controller work for this capacity HDD? Thanks.

Interesting little app. -- Coconut Identity Card.
But when it first launched and automatically determined a date and origin, it was way off -- 2005 and China. So, I clicked on the "Custom" tab, and manually (will not let you paste) put the serial number in. Then it gave me a more realistic date and origin -- Nov. 2002 and Sacramento, USA.
Looks like my MDD passes the June, 2002 cut-off date. Thanks!

  • Power Mac Dual G5 2Ghz won't start up

    Hi,
Last night I was playing a DVD on my dual G5, and the superdrive started to make unusually loud, weird noises. I tried to restart the computer from the apple menu, but it wouldn't. Then I tried to force quit all my apps, but it wouldn't either. So I proceeded to push the power button for 5 secs. and that worked. Now the computer won't start. I tried resseting both the PRAM and the PMU, but it still won't start. All I get is the power light fading in and out, like it's breathing.
Any ideas or suggestions as to what may be going on?
    Thank you ver much,
    Daniel

I have the same problem with a different twist. I was playing a DVD based game last night, logged out to go to bed, then this morning the computer won't wake up, won't reboot, there's no fan or hard drive sounds, but the status light just glows, no flashes. The only way to turn it off was to unplug the system. When I plug the computer back in the light comes back on but it still won't start.
There was a power outage this morning and several over the last few days. Otherwise there were no other changes to my system. The most recent installations were Quake and Age of Empires III (the game referred to above).
    Anyone have any ideas?
