PowerMac shuts off during bootup

This morning I woke up to find that my G5 tower was powering off during boot ups. It would turn on the, I'd hear the apple chime, the fans would start, nothing out of the ordinary, then the gray screen with the apple logo would pop on screen as per usual, but then a second or two later I'd hear the "click" that comes just before I'd turn off my computer coming on when I didn't turn it off.
I've turned on the computer 2 more times and the same result. It turns off at the exact same place everytime. No sooner, no later.
My Power Mac G5 is the last model made just before the Intel upgrade. I made no software or hardware changes recently that preceded this issue. I pressed the SMU button to no effect.
Suggestions?

Been there, done that (see thread link at the bottom). Here's my initial suggestion mix for this problem.
Have you tried a Safe Boot (hold down the shift key while booting)? If it comes up in Safe mode, then I would suspect a power-supply issue, but that requires a little more troubleshooting.
If you do get it up in Safe mode, look at your system log file using Console. (Click the Logs button which will reveal more log files.) Look for a log entry along the lines of (you have a later machine and are running Leopard, so the nomenclature might be different):
*localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122*
Now, where to go from there assuming you start up Safe OK. What is probably happening is the machine is probably executing a test in the normal startup that is "flexing" as it were the power supply, which is not responding quite like the SMU expects. This may be caused by something as simple as dust accumulation in the power supply. The G5 supplies can build up a considerable amount of dust, which needs to be blown out. This might be able to be done with canned air, realizing that you will stir up a bunch of dust, so it should be done outside somewhere.
Also, you can get more info by doing the verbose boot, holding down the command-V combination when powering up. You will get a dumb terminal display of what is going on. This will verify at least that it is truly powering down at the same place in the boot. There are three ways to set verbose boot as a default for the machine, should you decide to do this.
Method one requires using terminal (you can do it after safe boot) and using the following unix command:
*sudo nvram boot-args="-v"*
You can also use open firmware, in the following manner
*set-env boot-args -v*
Or you can boot single-user mode (command-S at boot, then issue the terminal command above without the sudo, which is unnecessary in single-user mode.
I just went through a similar situation a month ago, see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2452255&start=0&tstart=0 and I ended up replacing my power supply, though the dust blowout might have worked as well.

  • Laptop shut off during hard drive reset

My laptop shut off during a hard drive reset and now it says to do a system reset but I don't know what to do

Sure sounds like a hardware problem to me. To verify that you would need to attempt to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media.
If you failed to create it, you can obtain it from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here.
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery media, which begins on p. 57 of the User's Guide.

  • Nano with Nike + shuts off during run

In addition to the "activity stopped" issue which is driving me crazy, now my nano (2nd gen) just shuts off during the middle of a run. Not a battery issue. When I press a button, it comes back on.
All of a sudden this is happening and is driving me nuts. Is my receiver defective? It's not a sweat issue, as I wear a belt clip.
As for loosening, I always wondered by the Nike receiver doesn't have two little clips that secure the receiver to the nano, like the syncing cables.

    Hello
I am having the same problem too! About halfway through my 4 mile run, a voice over comes on and tells me that my activity has stopped. This continues for the rest of the run about every 5 - 7 minutes. Because of this, my 4 mile run only logs as a VERY SLOW 2 mile run.
What can I do to fix this problem? The plugin is not loose and my IPOD is not giving me a reading that the battery in my shoe sensor is dying. I can't call for technical support because it is past the 90 day purchase, but I haven't even had the Nike+Ipod for an entire year yet! PLEASE HELP!
Unlike the original posting, my IPOD does not shut off - so I know it is not an IPOD issue but instead a Nike+IPOD issue....

  • Satellite P10 - Notebook suddenly shuts off during application

My Satellite P10 has a problem since about 1 month. During several applications (for example games) it shuts off suddenly, without any message or comparable warning.
Is it possible, that it's getting to hot?
It worked without any problem for over a half year!
Could it be, that there's only some dirt in the ventilation? And can I clean it myself without any problems?
If I had a PC I would just open and clean it. But this is my first notebook and I don't have too much experience with the intereor of it.

    HI there,
I normally clean any dust from my A30 on a weekly basis, either by blowing through the outlet vents on the back of the notepad, or by using a domestic vacuium cleaner hose on the fan intake grills oin the bottom of the unit. This avoids having to remove the CPU heat sink which may invalidate your warranty.
I also make sure that the notepad is never placed directly onto carpets or cushions or other soft surfaces since this will either block the air intakes or provide a ready source of dust and debris which will get sucked into the unit.
There is a setting in the Device Manager to enable the cooling to be set for 'maximum performance' or 'Minimum noise'. The effect of the former is to allow the CPU to run at maximum speed (which may involve the fans running at their maximum, whereas the latter will cause the CPU to slow down when it is getting too hot thereby allowing the fans to run much more slowly. I believe the post from 'Heaven' related to a fauly chip on the mother-board which was making the fans run permanently.

  • E71x shuts off during calls

E71x in perfect shape shuts fully off during calls only, never any other time. In the middle of a call, not when hitting a button or anything. I had originally installed "xplore" and deleted some native ATT games, installed skfire and google maps. Since then I did the hard reset which seemed to re-install everything, "monopoly" and the other origional native ATT games etc. With the hard reset done, the "xplore", skyfire and google maps where gone and I haven't reinstalled them. Anyone with similar problem or ideas where to look? I got it from Amazon.com  (brand new, not refurb or anything).

On the AT&T help forum the best I could get is that it is a software glitch that showed up maybe on an install of something or they say more likely when I used "xplore" to remove some of the ATT apps (it thinks you are actually trying to shut the phone down...so it does) . Remember mine is the E71x which is ATT branded with all kinds of junk software for ATT. But I did do a *#7370# reset and it brought all the original software back and Google maps was gone, but that didn't help at all. Anyway they thought it should be under a warranty since mine is only 30 days old so I'm gonna try at the ATT store today. Good luck with yours and at least I know someone else is having the same problem. In all the reading I've done it does not seem common so I hope a new phone won't do it too. It is funny how I can text and wi-fi play music and it never hiccups, but as soon as the call is connected it's now powering down every time in about 5 seconds. Google maps......hmmmm.

  • MacBook shuts off during start up...

When I turn on my computer it's starts to boot up normal but all I get is (and in this order) the Apple logo, a loading bar, and the spinning wheel. The bar only loads to about 5% then after about a minute my MacBook shuts off. I have two questions:
    What could be wrong?
What is the shortcut the guys at the genius bar us to check the hardware status?

You can eject a stuck disc several ways, all during startup:
Hold down the eject key, or the space bar, or the mouse button until it pops out (sometimes it can feel like it isn't working, but be patient and try all three).
If none of those work, there are terminal commands we can try...

  • Iphone shuts off during sync! Whyt?

I have an issue with Itunes and syncing. I have the latest version of Itunes, however this problem existed even the previous version of Itunes. Anyway, the issue is whenever I try to sync, during the sync the iphone autumatically shuts off and restarts on its own. I am not running 2.0 on the iphone yet. I tried to install which automatically backs up but even then I get an error because the phone shuts off. Is anyone else having these problems? I have reinstalled Itunes and have pulled other USB devices off. I even switched the ports for the USB for the phone. Does anyone have any ideas? I been trying to figure this one out for a while. I know the first issue is the PC part. Just saving up to buy a new Mac. This is my work computer....URGGGHHH!

I have personally witnessed this with a coworker. During the restore process after the upgrade her screen would go completely blank and then after a while she would see an error message on her XP machine saying that the iphone cannot be restored error 1603 (or 1604).
When I plugged her phone into my MacBook and did a restore everything was different. Rather than get a blank screen we saw the apple logo and the circle down at the bottom indicating that it was doing something. We were able to completely restore her phone from my MacBook when she had not been able to restore her phone for 2 days on her XP. There seems to be some incompatibility between something running in Windows, for example in our office PC's we run Norton antivirus, that causes a problem with the device. It must somehow sense that whatever it is trying to do is a threat and is blocking its ability to communicate with iTunes.

  • Macbook shuts off during start-up - can't get through safe-mode, single user mode (fsck -fy) and target-drive shows no problems when running disk utility repair

    Hi everyone,
I'm simply all out of ideas on what to do - my best guess is the problem is not specifically hard-drive related since all the 'normal' fixes just won't work.
What could be the cause of my issue? The only way i've managed to keep the Macbook Pro on for longer than a minute is through target drive, where it seems to work just fine - i can access everything. To sum up everything:
    1 - I tried resetting the PRAM
2 - I tried to go in to safe mode, it shut off before i could type the password
3 - I tried fsck -fy command from single user mode, sometimes i can get to actually typing it but mostly it shuts off before
4 - I tried to repair disk via target drive - success, no problems detected (and it didnt fix my issue)
    5 - I reinstalled OS Mavericks.
The Macbook Pro previously had some problems with the power-button not working properly (a mac-cunning friend of mine had to open up the mac and start it by swiping to metal pins on a specific (battery/power?) part inside it. The problem kinda went away afterwards but it might be related to this?
This is way off my comfort zone of 'diagnosing' issues, so I'm crossing fingers for some good advice.
    Thanks,
    Aske

    I think you're right.
If it's hardware related, is it possible to guess at what it might be? It would be nice to know how much I should expect to pay for a repair before actually getting it fixed.

  • MB pro shuts off after bootup chime,  hd damaged/volumeheader related - disk utility can't repair - how do i recover/backup my files??

    Hi guys,
My macbook pro late(dec) 2011, doesn't boot up anymore, it just turns off after the chime (whilst a gray bar is loading a bit and then the MB shuts off)...
This all happened after I upgraded to mavericks, safari and chrome were spontaneously shutting off, my macbook kept restarting (all after recommended app store updates), it had kernel panics etc. Last night after an update it just wouldn't boot up anymore! Pff.. what should i do?
Disk utility can't repair the damaged HD, it had something to do with volume headers..
I basically want to access my macbook's files and documents so that i can transfer them onto an external hd or back them up.. i just want my files afterwards i can reformat or whatever as long as i get the files and contents of my hd back..
Ive read of diskwarrior? Can i burn that on a dvd and insert it into my mac, then start my mac and then it allows me to drag and drop all the contents of my hd onto an external hd?
I need a genius to help me!! A step by step guide would really mean the world to me!!
    Thanks in advance mysterious genius!!!

Step 4(a) open Disk Utility from Utilities on the menu bar, then proceed to highlight the external drive in the left sidebar as you say and choosing Partition from the row of buttons that appear top center in the main window of DU.
5(a) click Restore on the bar of buttons top center of the main DU window, then what you say.  But use the name you have given the external drive in step 4, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) is the way it has been formatted, use a name such as Backup or something obvious to you.
Step 7, On the menu bar, click File, then New Finder Window.  In the left sidebar you will see Devices and the internal and external drives will be listed.  Click the name of the external drive and then in the main part of the window you should see the contents of the external drive.  You can click on the folder for Users, then your user name, and see what folders appear...make sure the folders such as Documents, Pictures and whatever else you use appear and have the content you expect to be there.
You want to be sure all the content has been copied over since the step of erasing the internal drive is going to permanently remove it from that drive.
And then after step 8, add step 9, from Utilities on the menu bar, choose Install Mac OS X, and if it asks where to install, choose the internal, Macintosh HD, as where to install.
