PowerMac to MacPro Migration

I am finally migrating from a PowerMac G5 to a MacPro. Like most people, my time is short and I'd like to hit the ground running.
First, note that I didn't buy my MacPro at Apple, so I'm unable to take part in the file migration that Apple offers.
My goal is to keep running for now and do the migration over time:
My question is, since I have 2 drives in my PowerMac G5 and 1 drive in the MacPro, am I simply able to move the 2 drives from the PowerMac G5 to the 2 of the 3 free bays in the MacPro, then choose the 1st drive in the MacPro as my boot drive when I boot up the MacPro? I am well aware that most of my applications will not run or run properly and the old PowerMac bootup drive will become a slave drive containing the 10.5.8 operating system. That is fine, as I intend to replace those apps as time goes on.
Please let me know if this is feasible.
Thanks

First, I would do a CLEAN install and wipe whatever is on there.
Second, you can still import and migrate data and using Migration Assistant.
but migrating apps is pretty much a risk, I still see it cause trouble going from PM G5s to Mac Pro even when done carefully.
Even the presence of the G5's OS is not a good idea. The drives need to be refomatted from the APM to GUID even if they are going to be used for data drives.
Get a FW case for your drives; or copy data off, reformat, and then reformat and use.

  • How to migrate Aperture library from PowerMac to MacPro

I copied my Aperture library from my old PowerMac G5 (10.5.8) to my new MacPro (10.6.2) but Aperture on the MacPro could not display any of the images included in the the library. It properly displayes the previews but instead of an image in the main window it always shows the info unsupported image format. Only the images that are references to files outside the library can be displayed.
So what is the proper way to move an Aperture library from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac?
    Thanks in advance, Martin

If it's a managed library you can just copy it: It's that easy.
If it's a referenced library it's a lot trickier, as you can move the library and not the images.
Which do you have? It's probably easiest in the case of a referenced library to consolidate it, move it, and then move it back to referenced, if your library is of a moderate size.
But there are details on how to do this in the Aperture documentation; I suggest you have a read for the best practices on this.

  • PowerMac to MacPro - software functionality / upgrades?

About to upgrade to a MacPro - currently have a PowerMac dual G5 2.0Ghz with 3.5GB RAM...
Question 1: will I need to re-install all my software, or is there some neat way to transfer the apps ?
Question 2: Having just received my Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade, can I simply install this direct onto my ne MacPro, or will I need to install the original FCS then add FCS2 upgrade..?
Question 3: for FCS apps, what's the ideal machine configuration? I'm considering Quad 2.66GHz with 4GB RAM, or perhaps 8GB as Motion may prefer more memory if available.. ..or would an 8 core MacPro with 8GB give significantly better performance? I'll opt for the ATI X1900XT graphics card.
    Many thanks.
    Rgds, Ross.

All your current applications that are not Universal Binaries should be reinstalled. Any applications that are PPC-only but available in Universal Binaries should be upgraded.
Usually upgrade-only software cannot be installed unless a prior version of the software is already installed. Hopefully, you have the universal binary versions to use on the Mac Pro.
You can transfer your files using this guide:
<font "size=+1">Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac

/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
It would be wise not to use Migration Assistant when moving from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac.
There is no such thing as an 'ideal' configuration. Get whatever you feel best suits your needs over the next few years constrained by your budget. Everything else is pretty obvious - faster is better, more RAM is better.

  • Use my PowerMac G5 + MacPro with 1 Apple 23" Aluminum Display?

While I have a 17" Apple Studio Display (plastic surround) for my PowerMac G5, I'd like to have both computers (MacPro) share the Apple 23" display (aluminum display) so I can free up the 17" Studio Display for my MacBook Pro.
I think this can be done based on other discussions but, how would I do this with these two computers?
Also, is it possible for me use the PowerMac G5 like I would an external hard drive for storage?

If you hold down "T" when booting the G5 it will enter Target Disk Mode and behave as a Firewire disk. Use a Firewire cable to connect it to the other computer.

  • Fire wire Harddisc crashes when first on G4 later on Macpro

Its the third harddisc now which i have formatted and filled with 20 GB of files with my Powermac G4 (Dual 1,25 GHZ Power PC G4 1MB L3-Cache pro Processor 1,75 GB DDR SDRAM) . When I eject it and plug it in at a new Macpro 2x Quadcore 2,8 GHz it is mounted. As soon as I copy files to it the system freezes. After a restart the Firewire Harddisc will not appear any more. At none of my Computers. Also Data Rescue is not able to identify any connected Hard disc.
It happened two times. Both Hard disc drives can not be mounted any more.

a brody! Thanks for your fast answers! I thought about this possibillity, too. But I didn't want to use the Hard discs internal . In both Macs I already have internal drives. I wanted to use one external harddisc on each Mac for backups and storage of big picture files.
The Firewires appeared first, they vanished/ crashed when files were copied to them at the newer MacPro.
There must be a bad incompatibility between the Powermac and Macpro. That sould be known!? I can't believe I'm the only one with this trouble.

  • Migration assistant - oops!

I just used migration assistant to migrate from an internal drive (MacHD). MacHD used to live in my Dual PowerMac G5. The migration took a long time, as the estimated time remaining counted down from 2 hours to "less than a minute left". It sat at "less than a minute left" for about an hour and never finished -- so I quit Migration Assistant and rebooted.
My old applications couldn't be found on my new computer unless I'm logged in as my old persona -- where did they go?
I know they're on my computer because I have about 180GB less space than I did before. I looked through the discussion boards, and now realize that migrating from a PowerPC to an Intel is a bad idea!
What should I do? Is there a way to undo the migration, or should I reinstall from scratch to free up that space again?
    Thanks!

igrating from a PowerPC to an Intel is a bad idea!
Not really. However, you should start with this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1872713
Simplest way back is to restore the machine to its new state using the disks that came with it, get a bootable HD, and put a bootable backup/clone onto the the HD, test it, and then try migrating again.

  • Migration Assistant transfer hangs up

In the week since I received my new iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.7, I have been reading archived threads here about my options to transfer data (including applications) from my old G4 running Panther 10.3.9. Although I read mixed opinions about it, I decided to try Migration Assistant (MA). The iMac got set up perfectly, all of its original software got updated, and I installed Rosetta in order to recognize and run PowerPC applications migrated from the G4. I checked the G4 with Disk Utility (from its original install CD) and it reported no problems. I repaired permissions as well.
Both computers were on an Ethernet LAN, but when I proceeded with MA and chose wired network, it told me to start MA on the old computer. As the G4 did not have MA (introduced in Tiger 10.4), I could not use this method. (I saw that problem here in an archived thread, so I foresaw it as possible for me too.) So I used a FireWire connection via Target Disk Mode (TDM). Rebooting the G4 into TDM worked fine, and MA saw it. I chose most of my main G4 User account to migrate, deselecting a few insignificant items (such as time zone) but transferring Applications and essentially all other files. MS counted about 45 GB.
The migration appeared to start OK, estimating it would take 11-12 hours. Since it started last inght, I let it run overnight. After about 11 hours, it was approx. 40% complete (by progress bar) but said it had 10 h 15 min to go. After about 13 hours total, it said it had 11 h 17 min to go, with no significant change in the progress bar. I checked the Console, and it had 4000 messages (which may be a limit, as older ones disappeared after a few minutes to stay at 4000-4001) reporting every few seconds an error related to com.apple.storeagent. Those had started at least by 4:50 AM. They included the phrase "Job appears to have crashed: Trace/BP trap" and a phrase related to trying to restart. (Unfortunately, I had to leave for work and cannot report more details at the moment, though I can later.) All messages appeared to relate to com.apple.storeagent.
Is MA really hung up, or could it be stuck on one file or category of files that takes much longer than others? The Console messages did not look good to me. Is there anything I can do on the iMac, particularly related to storeagent, than I can do to resume migrating? If I cannot, can I just quit MA (there is no Cancel button) and about 40% will be migrated successfully? If I can fix the storeagent problem, could I probably restart MA? I think I cannot do one User's migration in parts, can I? (Meaning perhaps to choose Applications and certain settings first and then run it again for other files?) I think not, because the old User will have been migrated on the first run, and MA will not repeat it with that User exisiting on the new iMac. I could, however, rename my User on the second run to get the other files. Is there any advantage to that if MA hung up on a particular item in some category?
Thanks in advance for any advice. I am not in a big hurry, as I have another iBook and a Windows PC, but I would like the migration of my G4 files to be achieved as successfully as possible.

I have been gradually transferring content from the old G4 PowerMac to the migrated User account on the new i7 iMac. That has mostly been done via Ethernet LAN (which is fast enough and much faster than attempts to migrate via FireWire). I discretely copied over certain Library folders that were not already in place on the iMac. I have run installers again whenever they were available. The new account seems to be working fine. (There is a deficiency with AOL Desktop for Mac being unable to read individual files that are in AOL Mail format, as saved by the predecessor AOL for Mac OS X, of which I have thousands saved over the last 21 years, but I am dealing with AOL to try to resolve that.)
However, I have continued to have problems with a FireWire connection between the two computers, which I have resumed diagnosing this weekend after receiving a new FireWire cable. I tried to make a Disc Image of the G4 using its own Disk Utility (10.4.4) to save to an external USB HD, but it always gave the error "Device busy." When I mounted it on the iMac via Target Disk Mode, Disk Utility on the iMac was never able to finish making a Disc Image, terminating with an error after several hours of trying. Verifying the G4 via TDM using the iMac's Disk Utility said that it had problems (after the G4's own Disk Utility repeatedly said it did not), and then attempting to Repair those problems led to its saying the G4 drive could not be repaired. I booted the G4 into its original installer disc and ran Disk Utility to repair any problems the iMac's connection may have caused, and it was fine.
Problems have been occurring using either of the two FireWire ports on the G4, any of three different 400/400 FireWire cables with a new 400/800 adapter as well as with a new 400/800 cable. An external LaCie "Super Writemaster" CD/DVD drive was able to write a music CD connected to the iMac via FireWire, but it was repeatedly unable to write 4.25 GB of files to a DVD-R disc. The errors were to the effect of "a file was modified while being copied." Through a USB connection to the iMac, the LaCie copied the same files to a DVD fine. The LaCie then copied 4.33 GB from the G4 via FireWire just fine.
I am coming to suspect that the problem is the FireWire connection (port or controller?) on the new iMac. Is it possible for a FireWire connection to "mostly work" (enough to copy hundreds of MB of files but not GB) but fail during larger transfers? Every disk I have connected has mounted (so the symptom is different from that of other people who have posted problems related to iMacs' FireWire, who could not mount disks), but large transfers have always failed. I have also reset the System Management Controller.
I know this has digressed into a different topic from Migration Assistant hanging up, but your guess along the way might be correct as to the physical problem: "There's clearly something wrong with the old Mac, a Firewire port, or cable, or something"...except that it may be on the new iMac. Should I post a new question about this problem? I would like to diagnose the iMac's FireWire port. Apple's Hardware Test claims there are no problems, but I do not know if it could detect one like this. I have made an appointment at an Apple store next Saturday (while the iMac is still under warranty), but the nearest one is over two hours away and I am dubious that they will be able to determine a specific cause. I may end up keeping a new iMac without a reliable FireWire port. It is problems like this that make me dread buying new computers. I have had this iMac almost a month and cannot give up my G4 yet in case the iMac needs repair that takes it away for two weeks between visits.

  • Migration Assistant stops at very end

I just bought an iMac and have tried both with TimeMachine backup and direct Firewire Connection to my G4 PowerMac to use Migration Assistant - both times I end up with the following message at the VERY end while the message states something about transfering support applications:
"There Might Be A Problem With Your Network
The other MAC (or Time Machine) is not responding. Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. Also, make sure that your ethernet cables are still connected properly to your computer and to the network, or if using Airport, that the base station is in range and turned on."
The first time I canceled migration and had to set up a user account and everything - my old MAC stuff was there, but I was not my original user like I wanted to be.
    Any ideas?

if your home directory migrated that's all you need to worry about. set up the new user as it prompts you to and then check system preferences->accounts. if your old user is listed there it migrated successfully. try logging in as the migrated user. if it works, delete the temp user you've had to set up. If your migrated user is not listed in account preferences, create it using the same exact short user name as you had before. you'll get a popup saying that a home directory by that name already exists. say "yes".

  • My G5 won't boot up. The Gray screen comes on and it thinks about it until the fan revs up like it is about to explode. A friend said to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. Didin't work. Any suggestions? Isn't there a key stroke to help

Oh, so this is where I ask my question. Sorry, first time here. As I was saying in my long intro, the gray screen come up and the thing is spinning at the bottom, but nothing happens. Then the fan starts reving up like it is about to explode and I have to manually shut it off. A friend told me to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. I couldn't find the thing, so I went out and bought another. Needless to say, it didn't work. Is there a key stroke to help jump start the machine? How can I get into this thing? I would prefer not to take it in because there are a lot of things on there I don't want just anyone to have access to.Thanks, in advance, for your help!

Apple has a number of resources like "Power or Startup Quick Assist"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1149
Your drive does need to be repaired, and best things to buy are another backup recovery drive, with a small OS X partition; a copy of Disk Warrior is expensive @ $90 but excellent and best.
Never bother with or use the drive or reinstall while there are errors. Don't take a "clean' bill from Apple Disk Utility to mean there are no errors. Only that it didn't find what it looked for.

Make sure to have multiple backup sets and of your system so if there is a serious problem, you can just erase and restore to be back runninig.
Sounds like your G5 though needs PMU reset, not PRAM, and the best way for those is to clear nvram instead. might even want to check for dust; tell what System Profile says (later) as to "PowerMacX,Y" or "MacProX,1"
    http://www.apple.com/support/powermac or /macpro
    http://www.apple.com/support/sitemap/
The Utility menu is on the menu bar of an "OS X Install DVD" and at the point where you get to but stop at "install....' for OS X. you probably do need to install OS X on another drive to work from.
Oh, a real severe issue and damage to the drive directory or filesystem CAN in cases prevent booting from DVD (the system still tries to find and see what boot volumes are present) and can help to pull or disconnect the drive. Putting a drive in a FW case to turn on after startup is very useful.

  • G5 Power Mac will not turn on.

I have a G5 dual 1.8, one of the earlier models, and I'm guessing the ram restart thing will not work on it. I was just using Safari, and the computer completely shut down, since then, I have not been able to turn it back on, I've tried using a different power cord, and I'm wondering if replacing the power supply will be my best bet.

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Well - if you have checked that the mains power right up to the G5 is definitely good (and have waggled the plug in the socket at the back of the G5, for good luck) - you could try resetting the PMU/SMU
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341
but, if you do not get a 'relay-click' from the PSU, low-down at the back of the G5, when you first connect the mains power, it probably won't help.
There is a rather gloomy symptom chart (at page 104 in Preview) here - and also instructions.
If you wish to take a gamble on it being the PSU that's the cause, they may be available here

  • Pixel problem? Lines on the screen

hello my iMac is 3 1/2 years old. about 6 months ago I started to get lines on the screen, last week one of the lines turned into an 1 1/2 inch white line. From what I'm reading it's a pixel problem. My question is should I have this problem repaired, or is it not worth doing. thank you.

Are the newer versions less apt to have this problem. and is there a history of this problem with iMacs thanks.
Tough questions, the problem is that iMacs are sort of All-In-Ones, using basically Laptop components with a Desktop Monitor & Hard Drive, if one thing goes you can't just replace say the Video Card like on a PowerMac or MacPro, because most everything is built into the Logic Board.
I strongly suggest that anyone getting an iMac or Laptop go for the extended AppleCare.
As for the new iMacs, they look really sweet, but I myself would not buy one with an nVidia Graphic Card, I'd have to order the more expensive ATI Graphic Card.

  • Spotlight Comments - questions, limits and opinions

My wife and I are a little behind the curve. We updated our MacBook Pros, MacPro and PowerMac G5 to Leopard early this year in part due to the fact that my testing showed that Spotlight Comments are persistent on our home ethernet - If I put identifying comments in a file's Get Info > Spotlight Comments box while it is on my MacBook's Desktop, then move it to a "file server" (a shared drive on the PowerMac or MacPro), my wife can see and modify the Comment from her MacBook. The comments almost seem to be part of the file itself (yes, Francine, we know they really are not) unlike the volatile pre-X Finder Comments. We do not normally have any Windows machines on our network and when we do we certainly do not use one as a file server. We're pretty much vanilla Apple.
    Now, on to my questions:
1 - if not in the file itself, where are the Spotlight Comments actually stored? If they're in a folder's .DS_Store files, then they would disappear if you nuke those files (like when trying to fix a folder that is not properly displaying its contents) and that has not been my experience. I know that you can use mdls in the Terminal to show the comment and the other useful stuff that appears in Get Info's More Info field, but can this data get separated from the file it is connected to, or is it in that mystical Resource Fork? I'm not a developer (JavaScript is about as much code as I can handle) so I don't need the gory details. I just want to know if we can nuke Comments by unintentionally deleting some invisible file.
2 - What are the limits in Spotlight Comments? Are there any? How many characters will that field take? I am asking this since I have been trying to put info concerning an image into its Spotlight Comment field and once I close the Get Info window the Comment is gone. If I check with mdls in Terminal the image's kMDItemFinderComment field is not even created. I have been trimming off hunks of characters in the Comment and am now below 700 but it still won't take it (the file is not locked, I have full control of it, and it doesn't appear to matter what files' or folders' Comments field I try to paste it into). Is this limit documented anywhere, because I've been Googling for it all morning with no matches.
3 - if not Spotlight Comments, then what? I see DefaultFolder has an option to write Comments as "OpenMeta Tags" but what little I could understand upon looking that up made it sound like they're Spotlight Comments that are embedded into the file itself - even files that do not normally have a spot for Comments. Putting the description in the filename is much easier in X than previously, but gets a bit unwieldy very quickly. Many (but not all) image formats can accept descriptions in things like EXIF, but doing so changes its Modification Date and screws up our sorting...
4 - only tangentially related: how many years did it take for Apple to put in Safari a function that we made use of all the time in Netscape & IE in pre-X times: put the source URL of a download in the Comment field. Now why can't the Mozilla team put that in Firefox? It's not like I haven't posted that as a feature request multiple times...
I know that file "tagging" is a hot topic and I do not expect a real solution here, but if someone can confirm that there is a character limit in a file's Spotlight Comment field and let us know where or if it's documented...
Message was edited by: Notary Sojak

UPDATE - apparently once a file's kMDItemFinderComment field is created (I got the Comment to stick once I was below 600 characters) it can take more characters. I jut replaced the successful 595 character comment with the full 735 character comment I had initially been unable to add and it is visible from all the Macs.

  • MobileMe - Muiliple iCals on two Macs, iPhone (Sync problem)

I have two Macs : G5 PowerMac and MacPro.
I have set up-iCal on PowerMac with a lot of Calenders to cover items like walking, music, meetings A, meetings B, activity C, etc.
Sent email from one computer to the other to Synchronised iCal. However, I am now using MobileMe. What is strange is that the PowerMac does not find the "extra" calenders that I created on the PowerMac whereas, using MobileMe as well, the iphone finds them.
I repat: both Macs synchronise iCals to the MobileMe however the extar calenders in the PowerMac are not sychronised back to the MacPro portable. However, they must be on MobileMe because the iPhoe finds them all ! Why?
    Thanks. Kevin GARDINER

I think I have my own answer !
I have worked out that the only way to proceed is to select either the PowerPC or the MacPro PC as the "MAster Calender". Then in the MobileMe preferences, I reinitialse the data with a transfer from the MAster iCal to the MobileMe. I wait for the date to be transferred to Apple's site "MOBILEME". Then on the second machine, do the opposite: reinitialise the data and transfer FROM MobileMe to the computer. I then have the same updated data on both machines and also on the MobileMe site. For the iphone, it gets, within the 15mins "push" settings, the data from MobileMe. THus all four sets of dataa are synchronised.
    Thanks for reading this.
    Regards,
    Kevin

  • Sony handycam on my xmas wishlist...any suggestions?

my wife and i want to buy a sony handycam (or other brand....if good recommendations) for Christmas..
....can anyone put there two cents in?...
.....what problems do u have with yours overall, and with working with your mac?
....we mainly want it for typical recording of family memories such as kid's activities (daughter's figure skating, son's baseball games, swimming in the pool and so on)....
... i have been told that the --in thing--right now is the camcorder with the Hardrive .....no disc, no tapes, ....what is your take on this format?... i do like the idea of a hybrid (made by other brands...whereby the cam has a hard drive and a direct-to-dvd disc recording option....)

Ditto to everything mishmumken's said, and also in that Discussions thread he mentions (..I think mishmumken's a 'he'..)
Some newer camcorders can record 'HDV' ..that's high definition video, to match the new HD TVs. But they need a very fast Mac and lots of RAM (memory) in order to handle the hi-def material (..you don't say which Mac you have..) so unless you have one of the very latest Macs, or a tower PowerMac or MacPro, it may not be worth getting an HDV model. (..The HDV cams also use miniDV tape, which is what you should be looking for..)
You can't go wrong with a Sony, Panasonic ..or Canon (though Canons won't let you plug in an external FireWire hard disc into your Mac at the same time as connecting a Canon camcorder).
Your movies will look better if the camcorder has a built-in 'image stabiliser', to avoid camera shake.
As mish says, a wide-angle screw-on adaptor is an excellent idea if you intend to shoot indoors as well as outdoors. Most cams have a good zoom, for getting close to sports action outdoors, but don't 'pull back' very wide, so few will shoot a family group in a room indoors unless you add a wide-angle lens on the front.
Just in case you're going to get a bit more serious in 6 months or a year's time, it might be worth looking for a cam which has an 'external microphone' socket on it somewhere ..so that you'd be able, later if you want, to get a 'zoom' or 'gun' mic to fit on the camera, and thus get "close up sounds" of those sports and swimming shots along with the "close up" video which the camera's zoom lens gives you.
You'll need to buy a 4-pin-to-6-pin DV/i.Link/FireWire cable to go with the camcorder, as there's never one in the box with the cam. The cable connects the FireWire, also known as DV, socket on the camera (..called "i.Link" if it's a Sony cam..) to your Mac.
Do NOT buy any camcorder which has only a USB socket: that will NOT work with iMovie. Just about every miniDV or Digital-8 (..same thing but cheaper..) camcorder has a DV socket, but the hard-disc, DVD or memory-chip camcorders do NOT have a DV socket (..they have only USB..) and they're not directly compatible with iMovie, without passing the video through other software in order to convert it to DV format.
In 5 words; get a Sony miniDV camcorder.
