PowerMac won't sleep automatically unless a DVD is inserted

I have a rather strange issue with my G5 - even though I have selected "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for 5 minutes" in System Preferences/Energy Saver, my computer never sleeps. However, when I have a DVD in the tray, the computer sleeps automatically every time. Any idea why a DVD in the tray makes a difference? And how can I have the computer sleep automatically when a DVD is not inserted? Thanks!

You say a DVD installed. Does it do the same with a CD installed?
Strange indeed. Look at this link.

  • HT1776 Mac won't sleep automatically

Despite attending to all of the issues mentioned in this article, my machine won't sleep automatically.  However, I've found that using SleepNow (http://www.dragonone.com/products/macosx/pleasesleep/) works like a charm.  Apple should do something similar.

Wow thank you. I have been struggling with my macbook for about a year with this issue. Even after complete reinstall of the system, on new hard drives etc. nothing seemed to work. It drove me nuts coming back to my computer 2 hours later to find it completely dead because the computer would. not. sleep. ever!
This free simple tool took about 15 seconds to get on and running, and problem gone. Thanks so much.
    Apple get on this...

  • Pro won't sleep automatically

Bought a new pro and used migration assistant to move stuff from my iMac.
Now the Pro won't sleep automatically. It sleeps when I tell it to or on Schedule at 0100 but not after x mins of inactivity.
The iMac it migrated from had no such issues.
Is there any reset I can do to cure the problem?

I have about a 2 year Mac pro (intel) and it will not sleep on its own. I can manually sleep it.
The hard drive cycles up and down about every 2 minutes or so continually and the display remains blank. It will keep cycling the drive until I manually sleep it.
I tried a few times doing the reset thing and once it helped but in a week or so it started to do it again. I went and made up a new user and it seemed to fix it for a month and then it want back to doing it again. It is very annoying. I even updated it to Leopard and it sill did it. I'll try the reset again and see.

  • G5 won't sleep automatically

In an effort to save electricity and $$, I put my G5 on a sleep timer (10 minutes).
But it does not go to sleep by itself. Using the Sleep menu command works.
Any settings I might be missing that could be interfering with self-sleep?

just want to add my 2 cents - I've had this problem forever (it seems).
Standard PowerMac G5, aluminum 20" cinema display, firewire sight, white keyboard and mighty mouse.
Mac will NOT sleep automatically under any circumstances.
Mac will sleep when power button on tower or side of screen is pressed.
Mac will sleep, restart and power down when selected from the apple menu.
I've tried removing ram, pressing the SMU button, deleting Prefs, creating/deleting users.
Basically everything except installing clean from the Leopard DVD.
I've just learned to live with the 'fault' and choosing sleep manually.
If anyone can come up with a solution though, I will be forever in their debt....
    cheers

  • IMac (late 2009) won't sleep automatically

    Hi everyone,
I hope anyone can help me out with this:
My iMac doesn't go to sleep automatically after the time I set in the preferences menu. The only thing that happens is that the display switches off.
    I already tried several things:
deleted the file com.apple.PowerManagement.plist (Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)
    detached all external devices
    SMC reset.
    turned off all running applications
None of these solutions worked for me.
I know that the auto sleep worked some months ago, but I don't know what made it not work anymore.
The sleep mode still works when I manually enter it by clicking the sleep button in the Apple menu or by pushing the Mac's power button.
    Any ideas except using PleaseSleep?
    Thanks for any help!

Hey Mad-Hias, greetings from the US. I use dyndns.com, you can get a free dynamic ip there as well as a Mac client. Many routers have a built in Dynamic DNS service but my Apple Extreme doesn't so I ended up using dyndns...
As for the sleep issue and my take on PleaseSleep. I think that the computer should work, period. If there is something going on that is preventing it from going to sleep when it is idle, I want to know about it in a log file or something, I want the system to do a better job logging this than it is currently doing in the console so that I can troubleshoot and fix and not have to resort to third party software. In OSX, if it is possible to have a process prevent sleep, then there should be a log file to show which processes are preventing sleep...
My latest bought with this lasted 5 months with my 2010 iMac before I decided to fix it:
    My findings:
    1. Computer will not sleep automatically.
    2. What I tried:
PRAM and SMC reset, creating new user accounts and testing, erasing some plist files, unplugging everything, uninstalling hp and brother printer and scanner drivers, closing all apps, restoring default energy saver, looking for stuff in console and activity monitor, NOTHING worked...
for me the combination that fixed it was to make sure your time machine backup is good, deactive your computer in itunes, reinstall your OS from scratch + updates, DON'T restore using the Migration Assistant, this always broke sleep for me. Manually copy back your data using finder + time machine but NOT your apps. For me even the seemingly unrelated act of copying my apps from time machine even to a different drive (not the boot drive), broke sleep! Re-install your apps one by one and everything should work. This is a lot of work but I now have a sleeping computer.
After doing all of this, I discovered that I had installed the dns update app which talks to the update service over the internet every two minutes, breaking sleep...
For the sake of putting a nail on this coffin and putting this issue to "sleep", at least for me, I will do a complete re-install this weekend with a full Time Machine restore using Migration Assistant of all apps + data of my working system and test again. This will give me confidence of using the Migration Assistant in the future.
One thing I almost forgot to mention is that you can use the command "sudo fs_usage" after you've closed all open apps and disabled all types sharing temporarily for your system to quiet down. I discovered the dns update problem this way...It was writing to the hard drive frequently, preventing sleep...

  • Won't Sleep Automatically

Strange happening: I can manually put the computer to sleep, and when I close the lid it goes to sleep. However... it will not go to sleep at the time set in the Energy Saver Preference Panel. Thoughts?
    PB G4 Ti 867   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Cheers!

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep automatically - no process preventing sleep according to pmset. What's going on?

i noticed the following problem with my MBP 8,1 running 10.7.2 — automatic sleep just doesn’t happen. Since I usually put my Macbook to sleep manually before leaving the desk etc. I just noticed this issue and can’t really pinpoint it to specific updates.
Closing the lid works, selecting “sleep” from the Apple menu works. The only way to put my MBP to sleep automatically is currently PleaseSleep, which works fine.

My Macbook Pro won't go to sleep and it's driving me crazy.
I have been watching my processes closely and haven't seen anything that would keep it awake. The screen goes off like usual but it won't actually go to sleep on its own.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!

Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."

  • MBP Won't Sleep automatically. Sleep light on. Not pulsing. Drive spinning.

I can get my new MBP SR to sleep when I tell it to but it won't sleep when it's supposed to according to my Energy Saver preferences.
Instead of sleeping, the screen goes dark and the sleep light stays on at medium - no pulsing. I can hear the hard drive still spinning. I tried changing my screen saver to one of the original Apple settings (Computer Name) but that didn't help. I'm going to try throwing away my Energy Saver prefs.
    Any suggestions?
BTW - I took a closer look and I was a bit surprised at how many posts there are for the MacBook Pro on the Apple.com discussions. The most posts per day of any model by far. I know its a very popular Mac but this model seems to have more problems than we are able to solve. That worries me. Anybody else noticing this?
    -Todd

I had exactly the same issue and needed three hours to find out the reason. It was the Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. I had to disselect the *third option* in the *bluetooth preferences*. I have a German-language OS X so I don't know the exactly expression but it affects the ability for bluetooth devices to weak up the system.
If you have EyeTV 2: This application must not be running. If you have scheduled recordings that doesn't matter it will record anyway: It will wake up the Mac - record the thing - go to sleep again.
I have several devices connected to the MBP: Three external enclosures with harddisk drives (2xFW800, 1xUSB without sleep function), EyeTV 610, speakers - all those things did not prevent the system for going to sleep. All those devices can be left attached - up and running. The FW harddisks will go to sleep the USB not.

  • Powerbook won't  sleep automatically

    Hi,
im reposting because no one replied to my initial post, my powerbook recently stop going to sleep on its on unless i do it manually. Every other energy saving settings works normally the display sleeps after a while but not the computer itself. Does anyone know whats going on?
    Any help would be appreciated
    cheers

    Hi El Pres. --
I'm not sure here, but three things come to mind, but first two questions of my own:
    • First, when you say the PB won't go to sleep unless you put it to sleep manually, do you mean that it just won't go to sleep when you close the lid, or does it also fail to go to sleep with the lid open after a set amount of time as well?
    • Second, just so I'm clear, when you say you put the PB to sleep "manually," you mean you go to the Apple menu, select sleep and click, right?
Now, here are the only things that come to mind, in no particular order:
    • First, you might try setting up a test account, separate from the one you normally use, and log in to that account and try putting the 'Book to sleep by means other than manually -- first by inactivity, using energy saver settings, and another time by closing the lid. See if either or both work when logged in to your test account.
    • Second, you might try resetting your Power Management Unit. Instructions on how to reset your PMU can be found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
    • Third, and this is the one I'm least hoping is the case, but it unfortunately may be worth thinking about: if your PB does go to sleep after a set amount of inactivity via as per your Energy Saver settings, but does not go to sleep when closing the lid, you may have a hardware problem related to the lid's latching mechanism. WIth my 'Book, it's only when the lid has firmly latched, will the unit enter sleep mode.
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention: throughout all your tests of the computer's sleep mode, keep an eye on the little "sleep light" on the latch button and make a note of when you see it pulsing as it properly should and when you do not. This information may help you, us, or, if need be, an AASP or Apple tech, better understand what's happening inside your machine.
Post back if any of the above yields further useful info, or if you learn more otherwise.
    Good luck.

Thank you all for the answers! Already I could solve my problem. After watching several issues from other users', occurred to me watching the system console, and there was the secret! I discovered that there were some third-party programs that were no longer installed and gave error reading the disk every second ...
    *Thank you all!*
    Sincerely, Cesar

  • Powerbook G4 won't sleep automatically

    Running 10.4.11 on a Powerbook 5,4.
Ever since I upgraded my memory from 512MB to 2 GB and my hard drive from 80 to 320 GB, my Powerbook will not automatically sleep either on battery or AC powered. I can force it to sleep using the Apple menu item and also by closing the lid, but the auto sleep function under the Energy Saver does not work.
I cloned my original hard drive to the new one, so everything else is the same. As suggested elsewhere, I also tried creating a brand new user account to check to see if something is strange in the settings, but the same problem with no auto sleep function occurs on that account. The sleep function also doesn't work if I have no programs running at all except the Finder.
I have also reset both the PRAM and the PMU. Nothing helps. If I leave the computer, the battery will run down all the way since it never goes to sleep.
    Help.
    Thanks,
    Nick

Do you have bluetooth enabled? I recall someone had an issue where that contributed to not automatically sleeping.

  • IBk G4 won't sleep automatically while running on power adapter

I have suddenly developed this odd issue. My iBook sleeps fine when I shut the lid, both when running on adapter and on battery. And when I go up to the menu & tell it to sleep it will sleep (for both) as well. It just won't go to sleep on it's own while running off the adapter (I've tested it, and it does sleep on it's own when running on battery). I've repaired permissions & restarted, repairing again but this doesn't seem to help. I saw someone mention looking in the activity manager area for printer mentions but I don't think this would be the problem since it is fine off the battery? Not a big deal really, but wondering what would cause this! Thx for any ideas!

I have repaired permissions & restarted a few times, without any change.
I just looked at my activity monitor. There are many things listed ... this is not something I'm familiar with looking at! Some of the list I know right away what things are, and some I have no idea! But, if it sleeps correctly when running on battery but not AC, would it have to do what is listed on Activity Monitor? My guess is perhaps not? Maybe I need to zap the RRAM? But like the poster above me said about his, it's an old iBook and not really a big deal, I can tell it to sleep!

  • MBP 17" Won't sleep automatically by closing display

My MBP doesn't go to sleep when the lid closes-
I noticed it last night when I didn't plug it in and everything drained the battery even though I closed the lid. I have checked my energy savings and they all work fine-everything works as it should when it's open.
When I close the lid, though, it won't go to sleep!
    -=|Mgkwho

    Mgkwho-
I realize you stated that you checked your energy settings, but I had this same trouble.
When I checked my "Energy Saver" settings, the 10.4.8 update had set my "Put my computer to sleep ..." setting to "Never". Once I set this to one hour (or other time other than "never"), I had no further trouble with my MBP waking or sleeping (including simply closing the lid).
I first noticed your symptoms when I had closed my lid only to return to a MBP that felt like it could catch fire due the heat being generated by a non-sleeping, but closed MBP.
If you Energy Saver setting is set for some period of time, it may help to reset the PMU (shut down, unplug, remove battery, then hold the power button down for at least five seconds, then reassemble and test).
    Good luck.

  • My macbook pro won't sleep automatically

I have energy saver preferences set to go into sleep mode in 15 minutes. after 15 mins only screen sleeps, and sleep indicator led is on( not flashing). I can manually put it to sleep. several things that I have tried with no luck:
    1. Reset PRAM and SMC
    2. Reset Energy Saver by trashing some plist files.
    3. Format partition and reinstall OSX
    4. Remove all usb devices
    5. Disable ethernet port.
    6. Try it in safe boot.
only thing that will work is a 3rd party software called " please sleep".
Is there any solution to fix this problem rather than use please sleep?

Thanks for the reply Clinton. My laptop is running the latest OSX Lion,10.7.4.
I am curious why apple can't fix this problem, since so many macbooks is suffering from lack of automatic sleep. I just found a post from 2010 that already discussing about such problem : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2416586?start=0&tstart=0
