PowerPC applications (iMovie5HD) on Lion

I'm considering an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, which no longer supports PowerPC software. I've found alternatives to Apple Works (Pages, £14) and CD Label Print (DiscLabel for Mac, £25), but my remaining concern is over iMovie. I have many finished movies made in iMovieHD 5.0.2 on an old G5, but apparently the transitions, music, photos etc. will be lost once the files are imported to iMovie 9.0.4.
Does anyone know if I'll still be able to access and edit the old movies using iMovie HD 5.0.2 on Lion? I don't think so, as it's not Universal software so can't be used on Intel machines. From other threads it seems iMovieHD 6 does work on Lion, but I didn't upgrade to iLife '06 years ago. It seems crazy to purchase this old package (on eBay?) just to upgrade to Lion!
I already put this post on the iMovie section, am repeating it on Lion forum in desperation for a workaround!
cheers, Martin

Ha, 3 hours is nothing. Some of my projects, 20 minutes or more, may need six or more hours. You may also find cases in which the estimated time remaining may increase for a while, then decrease substantially. Much depends on the video content. I usually let it export overnight.
The time is a function of your export settings, which in turn is a function of what the final output is intended for. I understand the need to maintain the highest possible resolution, which is why I keep Snow Leopard around.
Who knows what you may want to do with your projects in the future - 720p may be sufficient for now, but VHS tapes used to be OK not too long ago. Try to watch one today on a 1080p display. Uggh.
I believe once a project is exported to .mov the transitions, titles, etc. are set in stone. It's only when you attempt to import an older iMovie project into iMovie 9 that you may risk losing them.
Goes without saying - archive the original project. Work with a copy.

  • How to run PowerPC application under Mountain Lion?

I ahve just upgraded my ancient laptop running Leopard to a newer model running Mountain Lion.
I use a legacy application (Filemaker v5.5) for work that cannot be upgraded in the near future for my work.
This is a PowerPC application that is  no longer supported. Is there an emulator or utility that will allow me to run this (and other) PowerPC applications?
Is there a version of Rosetta or something similar I can get?
The alternative is to create a Windows partition (shudder) and run it there.

No Mac will run an OS or OS point version earlier than what it originally shipped with. You can see which iMacs shipped with Snow, from this link. That said, it's not entirely clear that even the mid-2011, if it shipped with Lion, will still be able to run Snow.

baltwo said he got it running on a mid-2011 refurb, but on a separate partition from a clone.

  • Accessing PowerPC applications in Mountain Lion

Hi everyone, apologies if my questions have been asked before, but I was unable to find an answer.
My problem is that I just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard and discovered that one of my programs doesn't work because it is a PowerPC application. I only need temporary access to the program in order to export my data to a new version of the same program.
Should I create an external drive that can run PowerPC applications? Is that difficult to do? I have a full retail version of the Snow Leopard OS. Is creating an external drive the best option for the temporary access that I need? Could I simply boot my now Mountain Lion machine from the Snow Leopard DVD, access the program via my external Super Duper backup, and export my data from there?
    Thanks for your help!
    Brad

Could I boot in Mac OS X 10.6 using my DVD and access the program in question on my Super Duper external clone without having to create a bootable partition?
Sorry but no. The install DVD does not allow access to any other volumes. You'll have to install 10.6 on some volume.
    Regards.

  • How do I remove powerpc applications in lion

I did not delete my powerPC applications before installing Lion and the uninstaller won't open. How do I uninstall these programs that I can't use anymore?

Drag them to the Trash. Empty Trash.
If it installed something in /Library/StartupItems or ~/Library/StartupItems, delete those.
Optional: Waste time searching for remnants in Application Support, Preferences.

If you are unable or unwilling to update to Office 2008 or 2011, you can install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion and continue to use Office 2004 (and most other PowerPC applications) concurrently with Lion or Mt. Lion:

Snow Leopard Server is now available from the Apple Store for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping: 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753). Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A

After upgrading to Lion, not able to use a PowerPC Application (Quicken 2007).  Any solution?

Quicken Essentials 2010 has less features than Quciken 2007.  Keeping track of investments is one feature I need and Quicken Essentials does not include that function.  I may have to consider others financial software, such as iBank4, Money4, iFinance, and Money Well.

  • I installed Lion 10.7.4.  Went to use Photoshop Cs and got a popup window.  You can't open the application Adobe Photoshop CS because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.    Is there a way of getting this to work or do I have to get the all new!

    Welcome to Apple Communities
PowerPC applications are unsupported in newer versions. You can upgrade Photoshop or you can install Snow Leopard in a partition.
    1. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) and select your drive
    2. Go to Partitions tab, press + button, create a new partition and press Apply
    3. Insert the Snow Leopard install DVD and reboot pressing C key
    4. Install it in the new partition
    5. If you want to change boot, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select 10.7

  • Lion and "powerPC applications no longer supported" with hp Office jet printer

I have an HP office jet 5510 all in one printer that is no longer compatible with my recent installation of Lion.  The "powerPC applications are no longer supported" prompt comes up when I try to open the app on my dashboard.  Do I need to buy a new printer? To have it be compatible with Lion? If I do, which type of printer and software do I need to be sure of to make the two compatible with Lion?

Possibly.  Check the HP website and make sure your drivers up to date.  If you need a new printer, look for one that says it is compatible with Lion.

I just upgraded to OS X Lion and now I can't open the application Adobe ImageReady CS because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

There is no fix. It simply means that the software is outdated. Adobe would need to release a newer non-PPC version that supports Lion. They may have done that already, I don't know.

i upgraded to lion when it first came out but today i tried to open my photoshop cs2 and its telling me the powerpc applications are no longer supported is there any fix out there for this

Lion is Not compatible with PPC (Power PC) based software, such as your older version of PhotoShop.  Your choices are you can either upgrade to the newer version of PhotoShop, or you can backup your data and apps, erase your harddrive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
    Hope this helps

  • PowerPC applications are no longer supported on OS X Lion

I recently purchased SAT/PSAT/ACT preparation material for my daughter from Kaplan. I could not run the software on OS X Lion that I have. The error message I get is - " PowerPC applications are no longer supported". Does any one know what the solution is?

Lion no longer supports the Rosetta emulator used to run PPC-only applications. If Kaplan is using proprietary software then you need to contact them about an update. If they are using some other third-party software then you may need to contact its developer.

Well Lion does not support power PC applications.  They only way is to upgrade the application, or if your have SL disks, reinstall SL.

Buy version 2011 of MS Office.
Or you can download OpenOffice, LibreOffice or NeoOffice, which all come very close to working with MS files just like MS Office does.
Or iWord, I have heard, you can purchase.
