Nokia Ovi Suite is only compatible with Windows. For a list of Mac-compatible Nokia software, see this page:

  • What is a safe reliable playstation emulator for mac

What is a safe, reliable playstation emulator for mac ?

I have yet to see a 'safe & reliable' PSX emulator on OS X - they crash and are buggy & generally unreliable from the few I have seen.
You can look at PCSX (PS1)
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/pcsxosx/
    and PCSX2 (PS2)
    http://pcsx2mac.net/downloads/
These are cumbersome to install and may require you to get files from your original Sony hardware.
I'm hoping someone else can post a better option, these are not that great.

  • Apple releases Java update for Mac OS X Tiger

Apple released J2SE 5.0 Release 4 on Tuesday, an update for Mac OS X 10.4.5 Tiger users. According to notes provided with the update the release delivers improved reliability and compatibility for the Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0. With today's release J2SE 5.0 becomes the preferred Java version, superseding Java 1.4.2. Apple notes that Java 1.4.2 is still installed on the machine, but applications will run with J2SE 5.0 unless they specifically request Java 1.4.2. The update is available as a download from Apple's Web site
or via the Software Update mechanism in Mac OS X.

When I go to the DOWNLOADS Section of the Apple Support page and find the Java update, I see "(PPC)" next to it. Does that mean anything?

  • N95 Software Updater for Mac OS X Tiger and Leopar...

    Hi Guys,
I am posting this in preparation for potentially migrating from a Windows PC to a Mac.
I have just got an N95 on T-Mobile, which is fully up to date. Currently, at the moment I have a laptop running Windows XP but I am considering moving to a Max OX Leopard MacBook in a couple of months and I wondering whether there is a "Software Updater" application for Mac OS X?
I am very interested to gain a full understanding of the Mac OS X compatibility. So I'd be very interested to hear anything.
    Many thanks in advance.

This infuriates me! The non-microsoft users will remember how you treated us, Nokia. You can make things work cross platform or at least with Wine. This is inexcusable.
    i'm a mac user.
before that i was a linux user.
before that i was a BeOS user.
    i haven't been a windows user since 1998.
and i dont blame nokia at all for not providing a mac tool to update firmware on our phones.
have you ever updated the firmware on ANYTHING before? no? let me give you the run-down:
    1. motherboards. they used to provide DOS boot floppies to update motherboard bios, but these days it's invariably a windows gui tool. yeah - when that change happened all i could think was "PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont bluescreen on me"!!!. but, thats the world today - so if you want to update the bios on your linux box, you'd better have a windows drive to boot from.
    2. DVD/CD drives. again, windows gui tools - but with a higher percentage of exceptions. in some RARE cases you can even do it from linux.
    3. mobile phones. well? i've never had a phone before with firmware updates even AVAILABLE. it used to be that you could tell a good motherboard manufacturer from a bad one by looking for firmware updates to its top 3 models. if there were only a few, and only for the first year, that company sucked (think Biostar). if they had ongoing support, frequent and adding features worth wanting over several years, that was a good company (think Asus). so where does that leave us? Nokia provides ongoing firmware updates. THANK YOU NOKIA FOR CARING ENOUGH TO DO IT.
yes. thank's are in order - not complaints. they dont sell windows. they dont sell macosx. they dont sell desktop operating systems at all. they sell phones. phones that have software. they provide ongoing support for these phones in the form of firmware updates. they give these updates freely and ensure that for a large portion of their user base that these updates can be installed from home with well tested code. for the rest of us? either take your phone to a nokia service center (i think the closest one to me is a 9 hour drive) or use a windows box. OR JUST KEEP YOUR OLD FIRMWARE, hell nokia isn't compelled to provide new firmware in the first place. the fast that they do is nice, but your phone does what-it-says-on-the-tin. you don't need to use windows at all if you dont want, you just cant update your firmware.
i am so sick of hearing the same tired complaints that "we'll never forgive you nokia" and "you make me switch to a competitor". its all **bleep**. you bought your nokia phone because of the features listed on the box. they are good features. the phone has these features, just as promised. use them and rejoice.
    hrmph.
    N95-1 ---> N97-NAM ---> N900 ---> E7-00 + N900 (I use them both)
(N95 was pretty good, N97 had potential but utterly failed to deliver, N900 is absurdly good. Those of you wondering, "should I try N900/Maemo/MeeGo"? The answer is a resounding YES)

  • Reference book for Mac OS X Tiger

Can anyone recommend a good reference manual that goes beyond being a user guide. I haven't used a Unix machine since University (over 10 years ago) and feel I need a comprehensive guide to the inner workings of Tiger. I might even be tempted back into some software development.
    Thank you.

Mac OS X Internals: A Systems Approach, by Amit Singh
The book "Mac OS X Internals" (ISBN 0321278542) describes the architecture and design of Apple's operating system. The book is targeted at anybody who is curious about Mac OS X and has a system-level interest in operating systems. At a very high (and simplistic) level, I expect this book to appeal to both those who use Mac OS X, and also those who do not.
The primary audience among the existing users of Mac OS X are those who wish to have a deep and solid understanding of the system's composition and working. This category includes power users, developers, and administrators. Based on the feedback I have received from my earlier writings on Mac OS X, even "non-power" Mac users enjoyed my rather technical descriptions of the system. I expect such readers to find several things of interest in the book.
Among those who do not use Mac OS X, many people might be interested in finding out more about it—out of academic curiosity, to broaden their understanding of the design of modern operating systems, or perhaps because they are contemplating "switching" to Mac OS X. This category could be further broken down into the following (possibly overlapping) categories:
    The Linux community
Other Unix communities, and possibly people from the Windows community
    The academic and research communities
Even people who are anti-Mac, assuming such people would want to read the book to seek potential armament for the rather rampant OS-related religious warfare.
The book's nature is better understood by reading its preface and browsing its table of contents.

  • Wyse 50 Emulation for Mac Terminal

Hi. I know there are a lot of terminal emulation apps out there, even for the mac. But what I'm wondering is this; is there any way I can add Wyse 50 emulation to my macbooks Terminal app? I would really like to not have to download another terminal program for my mac. I find it redundant to have two terminal programs installed on one computer. Let me know what my options are.
    Thank you in advance

This has been a work in progress goal of mine as well. I was able to get WYSE 60 emulation going but I have an ongoing problem with time-outs and function keys.
I've only found 2 third-party emulators of WYSE and I've demoed both. They work alright but I feel that none compare to Anzio who's product is windows only. For that reason, I'm using Parallels Desktop to virtualize windows.
    Good luck -GDF

  • Hardware requirement for Mac OS X Tiger

    Hi,
I'm going to upgrade our lab from Mac OS 9 to Mac OSX Tiger, some of the machines are iMac 350 with USB port only. Just want to know is the 'Built-in FireWire' a MUST to run Mac OSX( from Tech Specification)?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Allan

The iMac G3 350 will not run Tiger.
It will run Mac OS X 10.0 through 10.3.9, with the following caveats:
    1. First you must upgrade the firmware to version 4.1.9 while you have Mac OS 9 booted on the hard drive (if running 10.2 or later, as I would not run 10.0 through 10.1.5):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    2. Second I would backup your data and upgrade the 9 to 9.2.2 if you intend to use Classic:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288
    3. You can choose to network those machines to Mac OS X machines using this method, and not upgrade to Mac OS X:

    4. Follow these tips when upgrading:

  • BASIC emulator for Mac OS X

    Hello,
I just received a fascinating book on the Apollo missions full of BASIC programs. I'm not a software developper (otherwise I would create an OS X version with all the equations in the book) so I'm looking for an emulator. After searching the web I found "QuickTerm 1.0.1" but I can't use it. Then I found the C-64 emulator "Power64", which will remind me my first computer.
The objective is to type, save and run the programs. Would there be a better option than Power64 ?
(I also thought about an HP scientific calculator but apparently they don't run BASIC).

Take a look at Chipmunk BASIC it's free, and might be what you're looking for.
I actually use REALbasic for a bunch of database administration, and I don't think it's all that much like the BASIC I remember from high school. It's more geared toward building GUI apps.

  • IOS app emulator for Mac

i'm wondering if a product of this sort is somewhere in the pipeline. i have a bunch of referential and productivity apps on my device that i would love to access on my macbook, which i have spent some good amount of money for (eg, black's law dictionary).
    please make it happen. cheers,

surely it's necessary for developers, but i'd like to see a product made for consumers. perhaps it's a legal issue where the current developmers contract doesn't cover devices outside of iPod and iPhone.
either way, OS X emulator should happen.

  • Quicken 2006 for mac free with Tiger?

After reinstalling my OS i discovered the following file:
    CPU_Quicken.pkg
I installed it and it works, as its the full programm, not trial...
    Anybody else is using it?

I use Quicken 2006 on my PPC Mac. I've used different Quicken versions on various Macs since 1995 - well before OS X was introduced and it has always worked well for me.
