PowerPC G5 will not soft boot

My 2.3GHz dual core PPC G5 running 10.4.8 will not soft boot that is shut down using the restart and shutdown menu. I have to hard boot it to get it to shut down (holding down the power button on the front of the G5). I have rebooted with the shift key in safe mode with no luck helping with this shutting down the computer glitch. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds as though, if you have a place to put a full computer content clone,
that is something you should try to do; if at all possible. Or use a second
computer to facilitate accessing this ailing one in FireWire Target Disk Mode
and work on saving whatever you can (to another drive; a bootable clone)
so later on, you can wipe the hard disk drive and or replace it; should this
odd issue really only be a failing hard drive or corrupted data on a drive,
all your stuff may not be a total loss.
The original boot-installer disc (DVD) should have the Apple Hardware Test
on it; some of those installers require you to boot while holding Opt key
down in order to see the startup manager menu with AHT option, & etc.
There are others who require a different key to be pressed to access AHT.
Do you have a new replacement hard disk drive on hand so you can put
a new HDD inside the computer, format it, and install a completely new
OS X, to test the computer's hardware from? That may be a home option.
Good luck & happy computing!

Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.
Your post is very vague on what occured, and there are many types of "crashes" it really depends upon what see on the screen and what the hardware does, we can't see it to tell you, so you have to tell us.
I suggest you run through these user tips and provide more information about your hardware.

If this is going way over your head, there are local PC/Mac techs that will assist you for a fee, Apple only does hardware repairs and is advised to use them if you discover it is, especially if under warranty/AppleCare.
Hard drive and RAM upgrades can be handled yourself or by a outside tech in many older models of Mac, but don't expect Apple to cover the new parts.

My mac book pro will not fully boot up. I have the grey background with the apple sign and the timer going round...but 20 minutes later still no desktop

You could try doing a hard shut down (holding the power button or yanking the battery) and then doing a safe boot by holding the shift key at startup:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Also, not sure if this applies in your case, but I've had that happen when there's a USB drive inserted either in the computer or a connected external keyboard.  I did a hard shut down, removed the drive and it went through a normal start up.

    Great clue Lukas...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • PowerPC G5 will not boot (from CD, single-user, verbose...) - is it dead?

I had posted this in the OSX forum but had a suggestion to post here as well - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
My PowerPC G5 (10.4.11) will not boot. It gets to the grey Apple screen, and then freezes there, no progress dial, and the fan starts racing after a couple of minutes sitting there. Here is what I have tried so far and the results:
-Will not boot normally - freezes at grey screen
-Will not boot from CD (DiskWarrior, 10.4 Install disc OR 10.3 Install disc - which came with the G5, each time it freezes at grey screen
-Will not boot in safe mode - freezes at grey screen
-Will not get into single-user mode, freezes at "DART-enabled"
-Will not get into verbose mode, freezes at "DART-enabled"
-Holding option when starting up allows me to select a drive (hard drive or CD), but then freezes at grey screen when attempting to boot from either drive
-Option-Command-Shift-Delete does nothing when starting up, again freezes at grey screen
-Option-Command-P-R does not work - well, maybe it deletes PRAM, but it never even gets to the grey screen, freezes with a blank (black) screen, so that can't be right
-I CAN get into open firmware & eject cd, cannot boot up from there - it freezes at the grey screen with a circle w/a line through it
-Attempted to reset NVRAM from Open Firmware, "reset-nvram" and "set-defaults" both were ok, then it froze after "reset-all"
I have tried everything I could think of and everything I can find - Does anyone have any possible suggestions or ideas for what I can do?
I had a couple suggestions that it could be RAM, so I'm going to try to run Apple Hardware Test, though if I can't boot from a CD, that will make that very difficult. Any thoughts?

  • Mac Mini (PowerPC version) will not boot - or reinstall...

All of a sudden my MacMini is playing up. It will not boot. I have tried leaving it overnight and reinstalling the OS to no avail.
It boots from CD and reads the install disc, but it hangs everywhere for ages. It verifies the install DVD - then just fails to install. And I have tried installing to external USB drives too with the same result.
I have run DiscWarrior twice and that sees no problems...any ideas? Any help will be greatly appreciated,

  • Mac Pro will not find boot volume

    Hello,
My Mac Pro will not find it's boot volume. Each time the computer is started, the blinking folder with the question mark is the result. A working install of 10.7 does exist on the machine's primary hard drive. If  I were to press the option key on boot, I can select the primary hard drive (after entering the password) and everything boots as normal. I have run TechToolPro on the volume with no detected errors, even after a volume rebuild. A Recovery HD partition is not on the boot volume. Should that matter?
I really really do not want to reinstall Mac OS X. I have hundreds of gigabytes of data in question. Any reinstall/reconfig would take days to complete.
    Thanks

So you are saying that setting the default in Startup Disk doesn't work?
And you have not got or been using Carbon Copy Cloner or another to provide working bootable backup?
You should have Lion Recovery on one of your drives, do a clean install.,
I assume TTPro media scan turns up no errors.
MOVE all your data OFF the boot drive. Keep the system OS and apps on its own drive.
Clone the system. Use TimeMachine and cloning for backup.
And how is the pram battery?
Any time you zap pram you lose the default and it will look for it like you see starting with SATA0 (bay 1)

  • MacBook Pro 17" Will Not Install Boot Camp

Has anyone else found that Boot Camp will NOT install on a 17" MacBook Pro? We were able to partition the drive and install Windows but when we tried to install the Mac Drivers we kept getting the error message "this software will not install on your hardware". This is very frustrating as we bought the 17" specifically to run both Mac OSX and PC Windows. Has anyone got any ideas?

You may need to wait until Apple updates the drivers or you could try extracting them from the package then installing them that way

  • Leopard seeing app as PowerPC and will not launch

I have a situation where Leopard is seeing an application hosted on a Mac server as a PowerPC app and will not launch it on some Intel Macs in my lab. However, the app is not a PowerPC app and will in fact launch correctly on other Intel Macs in my lab that are also running Leopard. On those Macs that it won't work on, the icon appears differently than on those where it will launch. Grayed out as PowerPC apps are supposed to on Intel Macs in Leopard. However, on those where it will launch the icon appears correctly. It's the same exact app though and the same exact OS on all workstations.
Has anyone seen this issue and if so, is there a way to resolve it?

Anyone? I can not get Intunes to load without crashing. See system setup above. Is there a fix that someone can suggest?

  • Toshiba L755 is the only one that will not PXE BOOT

Note that I've deleted other machines that I successively  deployed to from the Known Computers on Active Directory User and Computers, with not good results
Please any one help me decipher this headache

    Hi,
Are your using the WDS for the Windows deploy? A network boot program (NBP) is the first file that is downloaded and executed as part of the network boot process and it controls
the beginning of the boot experience (for example, whether or not the user must press F12 to initiate a network boot). NBPs are specific to both the architecture and firmware of the client. You must accounting the screen press F12 to allow the system boot
from the WDS. The VMware® workstation PXE booting issue please ask your software vendor.

  • MacBook Pro will not finsih booting up after Yosemite upgrade

I upgraded my 2013 MacBook Pro to Yosemite last night, but I encountered a problem when I tried booting up this morning. Whenever I turn my MacBook on, the progress bar slowly begins to load, and then it disappears and I see a grey circle with a slash through it, like a "not allowed" sign. Is there any way I can fix this? Please let me know. Thanks!

  • System will not fully boot to display desktop

I HAVE A IMAC MID 2007 INTEL CHIP 2GIG RAM 250 HD, PROBLEM STARTED A FEW DAYS AGO WHEN I WAS UNABLE TO LOGIN INTO MY USER ACCOUNT, OTHER USERS WERE ABLE, CHATING WITH APPLE  I DID EVERYTHING POSSIBLE, CHANGED PASSWORD, RESET, NVRAM,, SAFE MODE, NOTHING WORKED, PERMISSIONS, SO I RE-INSTALLED THE OS 10.10, TWICE . AFTER THE INSTALL THE SYSTEM WORK GREAT FAST AND NO ISSUES, UNTIL TO LOG OFF AND SHUT DOWN,
UPON  RESTART THE SYSTEM GOES INTO THE NORMAL START UP THE APPLE ICON WITH GRAY SCREEN APPEARS THE BAR RUNS ACROSS THE SCREEN AND THEN THE SCREEN GOES TO A DARK BLUE WITH THE GRAY WHEEL SPINNING, AND SPINNING IT WILL NOT LOAD. I AM ALSO UNABLE TO START IN SAFE MODE.
I HAVE DONE ALL THAT I CAN THINK OFF, HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING? IS THE START UP COMMAND LINE BAD??
BEFORE GOING TO APPLE ANY LAST IDEA'S  ?????

Please do not type in all capital letters, that is like shouting and we can hear you just fine. Run Apple's Hardware Test in extended mode 2-3 times,   you will need the original install discs that came with the computer 8 years ago to run AHD. The reason to run AHT multiple time is it does not always find errors after the 1st or 2nd pass, however when it does they are correct. Also 2GB of RAM is the minimum specifications to run Yosemite, you should upgrade the RAM to 6GB, the maximum a 2007 can accommodate, if you decide to upgrade the RAM purchase only Crucial or OWC (www.macsales.com), in both case ONLY purchase direct from the vendor.

Power is fully lost. The UPS shuts down. We are using powerchute software, but we don't want to rely on this. When the UPS gets to a certain discharge amount, we have a script that shuts down other servers and then shuts itself down. But again, when power is restored, it doesn't come up at all. I have to manually press the power button on the front of the server. I'm really beginning to be less and less a fan of Sun...They change all this crud on their new servers. It was hard enough just to get the APC to connect due to their changing of the serial ports on the servers. For the money, I should be able to do ANYTHING with this box.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
