PowerPC Mac G4 (2.9) Expand Options

Hi everyone,
Just got a donation of PowerMac G4, so I get to work on it.
Hopefully, there is no any firmware update needed on OS 9.1 before upgrading to OSX. I already did the upgrade. (I know this because I did an upgrade for PowerBook a while back that require firmware update on OS 9 before upgrading to OSX)
Here is the spec for the machine.
Machine Model: Power Mac G4
CPU Type: PowerPC Mac (2.9)
Number of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 467MHz
L2 Caches (per CPU): 1MB
Memory: 384MB
Bus Speed: 133MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.18f5
Sales Order Number: M7627LL/A
Hard Drive: 30GB
I just upgrade it to OS 10.3.2 (Panther). RAM 1-256MB, 1-128MB.
It's only going to be used for casual use, word processing, surfing the net, etc.
I'd like to see if I can upgrade this G4 to Leopard (it's just much smoother in Leopard)
I tried to use my Linksys USB wireless adapter for wireless internet, but later found out that Linksys doesn' have any adapter products that support Mac. What are my options for wireless adapter? Is AirPort Extreme is my only options? Source, price?
Thank you for any advice and support!

Hello dfarndale,
Thanx for the kind words, but you know an expert is just a guy further than ten miles from home.
Sort of disjointedly:
The 667MHz is eminently upgradeable; because of the 133MHz bus it shares with the Quicksilver QS processors plug right in and upgrades that fit the QS also fit the DA.
Having said that, it's not quite a case of 'plug 'n' play.
A lot of upgrade territory has been covered in this forum; it never hurts to see what's been said already. It also helps to start a new thread; there's less chance that your question will get buried in someone else's question.
XLR8yourmac.com is an excellent source of information on upgrades.
OtherWorldComputing has a selection (sometimes more than others) of new aftermarket processors, and it's always nice to buy new from a merchant who will stand behind his product.
Used processors are readily found on eBay, where their price recently has been dropping rapidly. However, remember it's a flea market and you take your chances; I've had far more unpleasant experiences with used processors than with any other item, by far.
The Quicksilver 933MHz CPU is a cheap, easy, and highly satisfactory upgrade; the DA will recognise it immediately, including its L3 cache, it is noticeably faster, and it runs cool and trouble free. Get it on eBay for less than $50 including its fan and shroud. Avoid the $9.99 'Hong Kong' version which is an overclocked 733MHz CPU without the L3 cache. You will have to run a 12v. jumper to the 'fourth post'. See: http://homepage.mac.com/josephk/G4pics/12V_connector.jpg for the picture of a Sawtooth so modified. You need a short piece of wire to get from the Molex connector to the 'fourth post', and also a ring terminal (squeeze type) and small nut & bolt from the hardware store to make the connexion. It's easy, and you need a spare Molex connector for the QS fan and also a jury-rigged adapter to get from four wires to two. See: http://www.pctoys.com/ for a selection.
It's all a good deal easier than it sounds; if you stare at it for an hour or so it will all appear quite obvious. I've done this upgrade a dozen times, and highly recommend it.
The DA fails to see the L3 cache of the QS dual processors; for this reason the swap doesn't seem so attractive.
I've used 1.47MHz 7455 CPUs from FastMac(OWC) and GigaDesigns in DAs; they installed easily and have given excellent result. I currently run a dual 1.2MHz 7447 on my QS main Mac. It dropped right in, but I've had more than my share of troubles with the 7447s; dip switches and general recalcitrance.
Good luck... Jon

  • Dual 2ghz powerPC mac g5 up grade option?

What are my possible uprgade option with with the dual 2GHZ powerPC mac g5?
I have not bought one yet becuase I want to find the best computer to meet my needs as a video/film editor.
I have a bugget of 2200$ and already have a two lcd displays, keyboar, mouse and speakers.
I want something that will give me the most options of upgrading in the future when I have more $$$.
I just dont like the restrictions of my g4 powerbook which is maxxed out?
please email me at [email protected]

As far as I now there are no processor upgrades for the G5 towers. You can upgrade the video card, memory, and hard disks. For editing memory and hard disk are the most important. I don't think you can have enough of either. I have an original Dual 2GHz G5 that I use for some light editing. I have it packed with 2GB of RAM (it can handle more) and 2 x 300GB internal hard disks. This has worked well for me so far. I have thought about upgrading the video card soon. I need to do some more research on this one.
People also make a bracket so you can add up to 3 more internal drives to the G5 tower. This way you could create a nice RAID with internal disks.

  • Installing Leopard from a PowerPC mac to an Intel mac via Target Disk mode

I've just purchased Leopard, but thanks to the common and very annoying faulty MacBook Pro disk drive, I cannot even read the DVD, much less install from it. Before, the disk drive error never affected purchased DVDs, only the ability to read and burn to empty DVDs, but now, apparently, I can't even read Apples own disks.
As the new system disk is Universal, would it be possible to start the installer form the cd on my sister's PowerPC mac (12' Powerbook), and install the system on my MacBook Pro's harddrive, mounted as a firewire drive, or would the installer automatically choose the PowerPC version, since it is launched on a PowerPC computer?
And, if so, is there any way to tell the installer to install the Intel version of Leopard if I run it on a PowerPC computer?

well, looks like I'll have to install Leopard through the Firewire Target Disk mode as my MacBook can't read the DVD. I would appreciate if someone could review the steps below to let me know if I am on the right track. The MacBook is the computer on which I want to load 10.5 and the iMac G5 (PowerPC chip) is the computer on which I will insert the DVD.
    - First question: Am I correct (see above) in saying that the MacBook is the Target computer?
    - Insert DVD in Host computer
    - Connect Target to Host using FW cable
    - Turn on Target computer press and hold T to launch in target mode
    - select DVD drive from disk options
    - this is where I get fuzzy, would I simply click the Install icon? And then what? Will the MacBook know to reboot in Target Mode or do I have to hold down T again?
    - anything else I am missing?
    Thanks.

  • Text Box Expand option

    Hello Everyone,
I am new in SSRS. I would like to ask about expand option of text box. I have a text box when we click on that + sign then it shows two other text box which i created. But i want to change the size of that + sign. I tried alot and search alot on
internet but not getting any answer.
Can anyone tell me how can i increase the size of that + sign?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Rohit,
Per my understanding that you want to change the size of the "+" and "-" when you have add drill down action in the report like below, right?
Generally, we can only show/hide the toggle and change the toggleItem, there is no properties to allow to change the size of this toggle.
You can submit an wish at https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/
If the suggestion mentioned by customers for many times, the product team may consider to add the feature in the next SQL Server version. Your feedback is valuable for us to improve our products and increase the level of service
    provided.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • How do I buy an iphoto 6 book now on a PowerPC Mac?

My mom has a PowerPC Mac with Mac OS X 10.4.11 and iPhoto 6.0.6. She is now unable to buy a book. What would the best course of action be?
NOTE - Please don't respond "buy a new computer" also, don't respond to install "App Store" and upgrade to iPhoto '11 (that doesn't work on a PowerPC Mac as far as I can tell).
NOTE 2 - My Mom does have an Intel Based Mac Book and could install iPhoto '11 on that computer; however, I can't find any step by step migration strategy from iPhoto 6.0.6 to iPhoto '11. If this is your recommendation, please point me to where a migration step-by-step exists.
NOTE 3 - I'm sorry about posting in the wrong forum. There is no iPhoto 6 forum available anymore :-/
    Thanks for your help....

SInce the only possible response is to upgrade iPhoto to '08 or later that is the answer
You may be able to purchase older versions of iPhoto on e-bay
To migrate from one computer to another you simply move the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from one computer to the other (if you have an existing iPhoto library you want to keep be sure to rename it before moving) - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
That is correct - the new forums eliminate the versions except as key words - as a volenteer trying to help I find that extemely difficult but it is what it is

  • I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back both of them  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010) What option has the faster GB/s?

I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back up both of them (time machine)  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010)
What option has the faster GB/s?

Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.
WD RED models are designed for RAID and NAS and 7.2k instead of your more standard slower green 5400 rpm green models while still costing less than WD Blacks.

  • AIR runtime for PowerPC MAC

    Hi,
I am running PowerPC MAC and I want to install AIR runtime. The latest one is 2.0.2 but in documentation I read that it doesn't support old PowerPC processor and I must install AIR runtime of 1.5 version. But anyway if I go to http://get.adobe.com/air it redirect me to http://get.adobe.com/air/otherversions and there is only 2.0.2 version available.
How can I get old 1.5 version?
    Thanks,

    Hi thilgen,
thanks for tip but unfortunately it doesn't succeed  to instal AIR runtime even from link you offered.
There is  message "Starting instal...." but that's all what it did.
I  tried it on two different PowerPC G5 machimes with the same OS: MAC OS X  10.4.11 but with the same result
    Any other idea what's wrong?

  • Is there a Flash Player 10 Debugger version for PowerPC Macs?

At http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html  in the debugger version section, I see only content debugger for Intel-based Macs.  My main development system is a PowerPC Mac.
I see a link below that titled "Flash Player 10 Projector content debugger" but no explanation of what "Projector" means. I am hesitant to install this since it appears different than other debuggers and I have had a lot of trouble with losing connectivity to FP debuggers in the past.
Is there any way for me to debug my project with FP10?
    Thanks.

  • Can I run Thunderbird on a PowerPC Mac running 10.5.8?

I have a PowerPC Mac running 10.5.8. I've used Eudora for over a decade, but it's very antique, and apparently RoadRunner just did some security updates, so now I can receive but not send.
Thunderbird's System Requirement page says it should run on my computer, but when I download it I get "You cannot use this version of the application Thunderbird with this version of Mac OS X."
Am I doing something wrong, or is the system requirement page incorrect?

The versions start at 10.6 by my reading http://www.verizon.com/Support/Residential/internet/highspeed/networking/troubleshooting/portforwarding/123866.htm#
    Perhaps tenfourbird http://en.sourceforge.jp/projects/tenfourbird/
Tenfourbird is unofficial build of Mozilla Thunderbird for PowerPC based Mac OS X.

  • Is OS 10.3.9 (and PowerPC Macs) being phased out?

Does anyone know if OS 10.3.9 is being phased out by most publishers (it seems like the majority of applications for OS X will only run on 10.4.x!)? also, anyone know if OS 10.5 will run fast enough (and/or compatible) with PowerPC Macs? my assumption is that OS 10.5 will end the lives of all PowerPC Macs, but I would be surprised if it even ran on any older Mac (because 10.4 doesn't seem to run too well as it stands right now!) thanks for your insight and help!
(PS) anyone know if it is even worth my time to repair my iBook G4, or just get a new Mac Mini? my warranty expired on 5/4/07, and I just wonder if this laptop is even worth getting repaired anymore! Thanks

Well, the iBook is a "consumer" laptop, meaning it wasn't the fastest Mac when it was new. The iLife apps, and many new apps are written to take advantage of faster Macs. My 1.6 GHz G5 tower is much faster than any G4 I've ever used, and the new Intel Macs seem even snappier. You'd definitely notice a speed boost if you got a new MacBook, and you could expec t 10.5 to run just fine. As the other post mentioned, we shouldn't speculate about 10.5 on G4's (I would expect a slowdown). As for replacing your iBook, if you're unhappy with the performance and can afford a new Mac, it's worth considering. 10.4 does seem a bit snappier to me, provided you have enough memory. 768 is quite a bit, but many folks suggest 1GB.

  • Hi Just "upgraded" on Firefox suggestion - now the program won't work "not supported on this architecture" Im on a PowerPC Mac OSX10.5.8. Now what? back to Safari?

How do I get an *older* version of Firefox (5?)

*Firefox 4 versions and later do not run on a PowerPC Mac.
*Firefox 4 and later require at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

For an unofficial Firefox 4 compatible version (TenFourFox) that runs on PowerPC Macs with OS X 10.4.11 or OS X 10.5.8 you can look at:

  • Action Script 3 and Color Management on PowerPC macs - Bug

    Dear Adobe,
Recently I re-skinned my website and incorporated Actionscript 3 & Flash 10 so that I could incorporate Color Management for my images. I used sRGB as the image colorspace. On Intel CPU PC's (Mac and Windows) the website and images look good - as expected - on any browser (safari, firefox, ie). But, on PowerPC based Macs the website looks AWFUL. There is a blue/green tint across the whole webpage and the images look super saturated and whacky, regardless of browser (firefox / safari). Both powerPC macs I tested with are running OSX 10.5.7 and have Flash Player 10 installed.
Can you explain why this is happening? See for yourself - http://www.stoqq.com

I loosed my firefox 3.6 while I loaded version 4.0 which does not run in my 10.4. PowerPC Mac G5.
Happily I was able to load version in Languadoc language which I do not yet understand so English or Finnish version would suit me better.

You can get Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

Expansion will copy any formula defined in one cell to the other cells. So, if you want to stop this, the only option is to not having expansion.
