PowerPC OS X HD put into Mac Pro 2nd Drive Bay

Hello all,
I have a PowerPC G5 and a Mac Pro. The G5 had two drives in it, a master boot drive with 10.4.11 on it and a second internal drive with 10.4.9.
I took the second drive out of the G5 and put it into the Mac Pro's second drive bay. The Mac Pro's main drive is running OS 10.5.1.
I figured that I'd have to run the Mac Pro installation disc on the second drive to make it bootable on the Intel system, but it's not allowing me to install. It keeps telling me that I cannot boot off of the second drive in the OS X installation destination window.
How can I fully strip the OS out of the second drive without reformatting it/touching the other files I have on it so I can basically start it as a clean slate for the Intel system installation?

Hi,
your problem is that your 2nd drive is formatted using APM (Apple Partition Map) instead of GUID. Usually PPC Macs use APM and Intels use GUID. Even though Intel Macs can boot from an (already installed) Intel OS X, the Install DVD refuses to install on APM partitions when run on an Intel Mac. So in order to install OS X on this drive you need to repartition it using GUID partitioning in Disk Utility. This will, of course, delete everything that's on the drive!
If you don't want to do that you can put the drive in the G5, install Leopard and then put it back into your Mac Pro and see if it boots.

  • Install Mac Mini harddrive into Mac Pro?

Hi all! Any idea if it would be possible to psychally take my hard drive out of my mini and install it into an empty hard drive bay in the mac pro? Im going to keep my mini around for backup and this would be the most ideal way to use it.

Ultimately it depends on which mac mini you're talking about. The older PowerPC version had PATA drives where the newer Intel ones have SATA drives.
Placing either drive type into an external enclosure is the recommended course of action.
However, if you are talking about a PATA drive you can in fact install it into the free 2nd optical drive bay. You will need to get a 2.5" to 3.5" drive conversion kit (it's really a simple bridge board that additionally allows the use of the 3.5" power cable) and the mounting may be rather tricky due to the short cables although it'll go into that space without a problem.

Did you purchased the Full Perpetual License from Adobe for $149.00?, if so then what has happened is that you probably downloaded the Creative Cloud trial version which has now expired.
The license key for the perpetual version will not be accepted to activate the CC version.
Uninstall the existing Lightroom and then download the one available from the link below. The uninstall process will not affect your Catalog, Preferences or personal files but will just remove the application. Install the new download and you license key will be accepted.

If this is not the situation you face then provide some more details.

  • I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back both of them  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010) What option has the faster GB/s?

I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back up both of them (time machine)  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010)
What option has the faster GB/s?

Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.
WD RED models are designed for RAID and NAS and 7.2k instead of your more standard slower green 5400 rpm green models while still costing less than WD Blacks.

  • Mac Pro Hard Drive Connectors

I need to replace the two screws that hold the hard drive connectors to the Mac Pro.
Does anyone know where I can begin to find these? They are two small black screws.
The previous owner of my Mac Pro removed them so that he could attach an SSD drive loosely to the Mac Pro.
I'm going to replace the SSD drive, as it failed, and it comes with a 3.5" tray that should attach to the Mac Pro hard drive carrier, but when I push it back in to align up with the hard drive connector, since he removed the screws, it doesn't align up and go in without me manually connecting it. I'd like to get it back to the way it was with the screws.
So...I wonder what part number that is or how I can get those two little screws, the exact ones?
    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks.

Yeah there are two models for this Icy Dock SSD Kit...I think I want the screwless version.
MB882SP-1S-2B - uses screws to mount the drive and has more ventilation for a moving parts 2.5" drive
MB882SP-1S-1B - is screwless and is meant more for SSD drives
    I use the screwless version.
As for dvwearhouse and others, unless you know the part number, how do you know where to look?

  • Is it ok to switch my mac pro boot drive to port 4?

hi, my brand new mac pro hard drive is kind of loud. is it ok to switch my main drive to port 4 farther back in the computer?
    will it be slower?
    thanks so much!

There will likley be no discernable difference.
If you do not have a drive in the first bay, it may change the airflow slightly, as it will no longer act as a dam to improve the airflow of the intake fan.

  • Why my Mac Pro hard drive noise and too slow?

Why my Mac Pro hard drive noise and too slow? Totally 8 gb speed system but now very slow . Please give some suggestions

Another thing you can do in Lion (and ML) is click on the "Info" button in Disk Utility to get the SMART status of the drive. It's more detailed now than it used to be and it might tell you if something is wrong.
A lot can go wrong with a hard drive which is why I tend to point people to the downloads section of the following web site:
    http://scsc-online.com
They have a free hard drive troublleshooting download book there. I reccommend people download that before asking questionis because there are tons of problems that can act like hard drive problems when there's nothing wrong with the system at all. For example, how full is the drive? How many applications are running? What's the status of Spotlight indexing? How many apps are you running? How much memory do you have?
I could probably think up 20 or 30 more if needed.

  • Inserted my Mac Pro hard drives into a RAID enclosure accidentally... help!

    Hi guys,
I am regular member of the Logic Pro forum, but am hoping for some help regarding a fairly large data loss disaster.
I have recently sold my Mac Pro tower, in favour of a new iMac, and prior to selling I removed my two additional audio hard drives from the Mac Pro. Unfortunately these were only backed up a year ago (and now my slackness has come back to bite me!), and since then a fair bit of audio work has been completed in Logic Pro.
My plan was to access the hard drives' content on my iMac using a dual-HD USB3 hard drive enclosure. I purchased the ORICO 3529 NAS series, which, while having RAID functionality, I also understood could be used simply as a dual drive unit for normal access of two drives.
So when I got the ORICO unit, I put my two audio drives into it, and plugged into the iMac. I expected to see my drives, but instead I got the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I had switched the ORICO to JBOD mode, but possibly not prior to initially powering up the unit - which it appears defaults to RAID mode.
I have since tried the HDs in another single enclosure, as well as putting them in a friend's Mac Pro, and in both cases each disk brings up the same error.
It appears I have somehow formatted these drives to be part of a RAID setup, just by putting them in the RAID unit. I am not sure whether this means that all my data is lost, or whether instead it means that the directory or some other part of the file structure or format have been damaged and need to be re-built. While I am a competent computer user in a music context (using Pro Tools and Logic Pro), I am by no means a programmer, and am not really sure where to go from here.
Two of the very helpful regulars on the Logic Pro forum have advised me that potentially a tool like DiskWarrior might help recover the data, although as we went through some additional troubleshooting, they have since suggested that DiskWarrior may not be the solution, and instead I should talk to a RAID specialist about how to recover some of the data on these disks.
So on that note I thought I would put it out here for any Mac users who might be experienced with RAID and willing to make any recommendations. In the meantime I am not going to try to use any tools (like DiskWarrior) in case they cause more harm when in fact I should be seeking out a RAID expert to work on the solution with me.
If you have any thoughts or have had an experience similar (if you are as silly as me!), I would be grateful for any suggestions you might be able to offer.
    Cheers and thanks!
    Mike

Also, first thing is don't touch change or modify. Disconnect and get them off line.
The first program that can probably help, http://www.SoftRAID.com - their demo (the support they give is probably worth the cost too). Alsoft Disk Warrior support - even remote login - also can be excellent if or when needed.
SoftRAID 'takes over" the Apple RAID and can do wonders.
What you have is an external device with its own built-in bridge and probably a switch (mirror, stripe, JBOD, None).
You need to get them in a case that has no built in bridge or RAID of its own. A Mac Pro would be excellent.
See what OWC has in external cases. http://www.macsales.com/firewire ( a good place to start looking at any type of external interface for storage)

  • What type of expansions can be put in Mac Pro's

I've owned MBP and iMac but now I own a Mac Pro and I want to know what kinds of things can the system be expanded with besides HD, extra super drives. I need some ideas here, this is actually my very first tower computer and this is all new to me. I'm using the computer for video and some music. I hear of people installing Blu Ray but I thought Macs do not support them, I've heard of this e-sata thing, and I've heard of people putting different graphic cards. Give me some insight if you guys and girls don't mind.

You'd be surprised...! People come to Mac Pro not knowing how much RAM their apps will benefit from, or how to configure primary scatch, or never used any type of RAID and not sure what it means, and want to use mirror for their backup.
Of course then we get to, "if you have to ask if you need Mac Pro or not, or could get by with a _____" the general snap is, "if you have to ask, then you don't need one" too.
Or they get into these FW hubs and daisy chain and run into all sorts of problems as a result; or don't know that eSATA/USB/FW may not be native SATA.
The first time I got into SCSI controller, and first time it was a real option, I had a headache for months going over Ultra2 vs Ultra160.

  • Install external drive into mac pro

I have stored my itunes library on an external hard drive and now that i have purchased a mac pro i would like to install the external hard drive into the mac pro and continue to use the drive for the library. The external drive is a deskstar in an enclosure that i can just slide it out of so i can install it in the mac pro. Will this work or is there a better way?

Turn off the option in the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences to copy the files to the iTunes music folder, and then drag the folder into the open iTunes window. This will not preserve playlists and other metadata.

i'm having the hardest time installing my newly purchased (through newegg) evga geforce 8800GT video card into my mac pro (8-core model purchased in early 2008.)

  • Plug 24" LED Display into Mac Pro, Still Charge MacBook Air?

Just set up my Mac Pro using the 24" LED Display I used to use with my MacBook Air. With the USB and Mini DisplayPort now plugged into the Mac Pro, could I still plug the MagSafe power cable into the Air to charge it in a pinch, or is there any reason I'd need to unplug the Mac Pro connection first?
    (Rather be safe than sorry...)

Thanks much! Unless anyone cares to chime in with an opposing view, I'll be using the 24" as a spare MagSafe to recharge the Air when I'm at home...

Hi the firewire cable that came with my Western Digital My book External Hard Drive won't fit into my Quad Core Mac Pro. Is it the wrong cable? What's the correct cable that would connect my Western Digital External Hard Drive into my Quad Core Mac Pro? Any help is greatly appreciated

If you have a port that looks like this one, it's FW400. If it looks like this one it's FW800. If you have one of each it supports both. If you don't have either then it's USB only.
