PowerPC, Universal & Intel apps confusion

Hello. I know that when I Get Info on any apps, it tells you whether those apps are PowerPC (runs under Rosetta), Universal (have both Intel + PowerPC codes to run native on either type of machine; some even have an option to run under Rosetta), or Intel (runs only on Intel machines). I have complete understanding about the PowerPC part.
My questions are:
1. Why is that some Universal apps have an option to run under Rosetta (e.g. Illustrator, Photoshop CS3) and not others (e.g. DiskWarrior 4.2, 1Password 2.11.1)?
2. How can I tell if any of my apps are running in 64-bit or 32-bit mode? I did notice that some apps let me choose "Open in 32-bit mode" like Safari & Quicktime X player... Is that the indication?
3. Some Intel (not Universal) apps like Safari have both options to run in 32-bit mode AND run using Rosetta. How can Intel apps run under Rosetta without PowerPC codes?? I'm totally confused...
Thank you for any help. You may also point me to any related reading or discussion so I can learn more about these. Unfortunately when do a search online all I can find are discussions about booting in 32-bit/64-bit kernel but nothing related to this...
Thanks again!

they might have only 64-bit PPC code in which case they won't run under rosetta. BTW, I don't have disk warrior 4.2 but 1Password does have an option to run in Rosetta.

look in Activity monitor. it will explicitly list the architecture and if it's 64-bit it will say so.

safari is universal, not intel. it does have PPC code although I have no idea why.

in general you can see all the available architecture in an app as follows. control-click on the app and selec t "show package contents. go to the folder Contents->macOS.
in terminal type
file
press space and drag the unix executable file from the MacOS folder to the terminal window. press enter in terminal. for example, for safari the command will be
file /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari

  • HELP!!!--- Canon Pixma MG5420 Mac OS X 10.5.8 PowerPC Universal Binary Print Driver...... ---

    Greetings Everyone!
I am a bit miffed at the moment.
I purchased a Canon Pixma MG5420 Print-Copy-Scan machine with the intention of using it with my Power Mac G5, PowerPC, Mac OS X 10.5.8.
But alas. Apparently it is not to be. The box in which the printer came cleary displays the Mac Logo and the Universal Logo, the Universal Logo looking like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_binary
The Mac OS X system requirements also notate the OS X to be a minimum of 10.5.8!
The driver CD only contains drivers for Mac OS X Intel.
So Someone....ANYONE!....please tell me why Canon has stooped to this low level of "False Advertising"???
Let's FLAG this issue and find out WHY!
    NEED HELP!
    ....and could use working drivers!

IT"S OFFICIAL!---> Canon has stopped porting any of their drivers to the Universal Binary format for MAC OS X which is a combo installer for PowerPC and Intel machines.
The MG5420 MFP that I have was released in December 2012 and they *said* that I was the first person to "complain" of this issue!....REALLY!?!?....wow...so there is no one else out there using the PowerPC platform??? I find the G5 (model M9592LL/A) to be quite adequate and useable for what I do!  I guess the engineers couldn't be bothered to "port" it to the PowerPC platform!  Listen Canon, if you don't think the PowerPC is still useable, go visit http://www.macofalltrades.com/ and watch the "trend" of what sells and what doesn't.....or maybe you should call another authority of Apple products http://www.macsales.com/ and ask what volume of PowerPC compatible parts they sell?!
And Canon, I know you offered to buy back this "mistake", but for the $99 I bought it at, (extra set of ink not included) I may just hold on to it and do the "workaround" of scanning to and printing from a Windows XP PC shared folder...No, Canon, I'm not completely stupid!....I set-up MFP's for my job, so I know a little bit about networking!  ...enough to be dangerous, at least!  ;-)   Any way, I just got this G5 a year or so ago and it is new to me...I probably wait a little longer and then get an Intel Mac, and THEN it will work natively with this INTEL CANON!....LOL!
    What do you think?!.....Thoughts?.....Ideas?
Oh, and Canon.....get your "engineering" team and your marketing "box makers/printers" in Thailand to get their "info" to correspond and be accurate....that way there will be no false advertising and misrepresentation of Apple's "Intellectual Property" and "breach of contract!.....You darn well know they have an "Image" to uphold!
    https://developer.apple.com/softwarelicensing/agreements/maclogo.html
    CHEERS!
PS--you better watch your back Canon on this little faux pas!....Epson might use this to their advertising advantage!....they still support Universal Binary!

  • Mac OS Universal Binary App using Labview 2009?

Is there any way to create a Mac OS app using LabView 2009 that can be run on both powerpc and intel based Macs.  I tried going through the steps found in this document (http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/C07C01A063002882862571DC006C1014) - but the rosetta option was not found in the general section of the get info window...  I am wondering if this does not work for the new version of LV?
Thanks so much for your time.

The last LabVIEW version to support PowerPC Macs was AFAIK version 8.5.1. I believe 8.5 was also the first to support Intel Macs.

I have an iMAC G5 PowerPC (not Intel) running10.5.8.  I sync my iphone to iTunes - but just learned I must have Snow Leopard to do so for my new iPhone 5S.     Yet I can't install Snow Leopard as the G5 is not Intel.   What do I do?  How do I move music and pics?  And keep them synced up as I purchase more?

Sorry, but that is correct. You need Snow Leopard to sync your phone and the latest version of iTunes and you old G5 cannot run that.

  • Apple Releases Security Update 2006-004 (PowerPC and Intel)

    From Macfixit................
Apple has released Security Update 2006-004 for Mac OS X in both PowerPC and Intel versions. This update requires Mac OS X 10.4.7 for either PowerPC or Intel, Mac OS X 10.3.9 or Mac OS X 10.3.9 Server.
This is the fourth major standalone security update for Mac OS X released this year.
Update procedure recommendation First, avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring. In addition, before installing this security update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying the update (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted.
    Enhancements in this release
Of most interest to general end-users:
a fix that prevents maliciously crafted Zip archives from causing condition where arbitrary code can be execute. In other words, prior to Security Update 2006-004 you could download a specially crafted file ending in .zip from a Web site or other location, and it could trigger the execution of malicious code.
a fix that disallows maliciously crafted Canon RAW images from creating a buffer overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. Prior to Security Update 2006-004, you could download or otherwise receive a Canon RAW file that could allow execution of malicious code on your system.
similar to the above, a fix that prevents maliciously crafted GIF images from causing an integer overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution.
new download validation that will catch certain HTML files defined by Safari as "safe" that may actually contain malicious JavaScript code. After applying Security Update 2006-004, these files will not be automatically opened.
Protection against maliciously crafted HTML documents that can also open the door for arbitrary code execution by accessing deallocated objects.
A full list of enhancements is as follows:
    AFP Server
An issue in the AFP server allows search results to include files and folders for which the user performing the search has no access. This may lead to information disclosure if the names themselves are sensitive information. If the permissions of the items allow it, the contents may also be accessible. This update addresses the issue in Mac OS X v10.3.9 by ensuring that search results only include items for which the user is authorized. For Mac OS X v10.4 systems, the issue was addressed in Mac OS X v10.4.7. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9:
The AFP server contains an integer overflow that can be triggered by an authenticated user. A malicious user with access to the AFP server may be able to cause a denial of service attack or arbitrary code execution with system privileges. The AFP server is not enabled by default on Mac OS X. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation. Credit to Dino Dai Zovi of Matasano Security for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
On Mac OS X Server, the AFP server supports reconnection of file sharing sessions after a network outage. The storage of reconnect keys is world-readable. It may be possible for an authenticated local user to read the reconnect keys, use them to impersonate another user over AFP, and access files or folders with the privileges of the impersonated user. This update addresses the issue by protecting the reconnect keys with appropriate file system permissions. This issue only affects Mac OS X Server. Available for: Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
An unchecked error condition exists in the AFP server that may lead to a crash. By carefully crafting an invalid AFP request, an attacker may be able to trigger this condition and cause a denial of service. This update addresses the issue by handling the formerly unchecked error condition. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Bluetooth
The security of the Bluetooth Setup Assistant has been improved in this update for Mac OS X v10.4.7. The length of the automatically generated passkey used for pairing has been increased from six characters to eight characters. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Bom
An issue in Bom's compression state handling may cause heap corruption. By carefully crafting a corrupt Zip archive and persuading a victim to open it, an attacker may be able to trigger this condition which could lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. Note that Safari will automatically open archives when "Open `safe' files after downloading" is enabled. This update addresses the issue by properly handling such malformed Zip archives. Credit to Tom Ferris of Security-Protocols.com for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    DHCP
A stack buffer overflow exists in bootpd's request processing. By carefully crafting a malicious BOOTP request, a remote attacker may be able to trigger the overflow and cause arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the system. Note that bootpd is not enabled by default in Mac OS X, and must be manually configured in order to be enabled. This update addresses the issue by performing additional bounds checking. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    dyld
Malicious local system users may specify dynamic linker options that cause output to standard error. This output contains informational content and potentially user-specified content. As a result, privileged applications that parse or reuse standard error may be influenced inappropriately. This update addresses the issue by ignoring the problematic dynamic linker options in privileged applications. Credit to Neil Archibald of Suresec LTD for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
An improperly handled condition in the dynamic linker may lead to including dangerous paths when searching for libraries to load into privileged applications. As a result, malicious local users may cause the dynamic linker to load and execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. This update addresses the issue by properly selecting search paths when executing privileged applications. Credit to Neil Archibald of Suresec LTD for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    fetchmail
Several issues in the fetchmail utility were discovered. The most serious issue could lead to arbitrary code execution when fetching mail from a malicious POP3 mail server. All issues are described at the fetchmail website (fetchmail.berlios.de). This update addresses the issues by updating fetchmail to version 6.3.4. In addition, fetchmail is no longer distributed as a privileged utility. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    gunzip
A race condition may allow a malicious local user to modify the permissions of files owned by another user executing gunzip. This issue is only exploitable when executing gunzip on files in directories that are modifiable by other users. This update addresses the issue by properly handling files while decompressing. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
A directory traversal vulnerability is present in the command line utility gunzip when it is used with the non-default "-N" option. By carefully crafting a malicious compressed file and persuading a user to open it with "gunzip -N", an attacker may replace or create arbitrary files with the privileges of the victim. This update addresses the issue by properly stripping paths from files when decompressing. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Image RAW
By carefully crafting a corrupt Canon RAW image, an attacker can trigger a buffer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of Canon RAW images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    ImageIO
By carefully crafting a corrupt Radiance image, an attacker can trigger an integer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of Radiance images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
By carefully crafting a corrupt GIF image, an attacker can trigger an undetected memory allocation failure which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of GIF images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.

    LaunchServices
Download Validation may erroneously identify certain files containing HTML as "safe". If such a file is downloaded in Safari and Safari's "Open `safe' files after downloading" option is enabled, the HTML document will automatically be opened from a local URI. This would allow any JavaScript code embedded in the document to bypass access restrictions normally imposed on remote content. This update provides additional checks to identify potentially malicious file types so that they are not automatically opened. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    OpenSSH
Attempting to log in to an OpenSSH server ("Remote Login") using a nonexistent account causes the authentication process to hang. An attacker can exploit this behavior to detect the existence of a particular account. A large number of such attempts may lead to a denial of service. This update addresses the issue by properly handling attempted logins by nonexistent users. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Credit to Rob Middleton of the Centenary Institute (Sydney, Australia) for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    telnet
When connected to a TELNET server, the client may send the contents of arbitrary environment variables to the server if the server requests them. Some environment variables may contain sensitive information that should not be sent over the network. This update addresses the issue by ensuring that only non-sensitive variables and variables that the user has explicitly requested are are shared with the server. Credit to Gael Delalleau and iDEFENSE for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    WebKit
A maliciously-crafted HTML document could cause a previously deallocated object to be accessed. This may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by properly handling such documents. Credit to Jesse Ruderman of Mozilla Corporation for reporting this issue. Buffer overflows were discovered in TIFF tag handling (CVE-2006-3459, CVE-2006-3465), the TIFF PixarLog decoder (CVE-2006-3461), and the TIFF NeXT RLE decoder (CVE-2006-3462). By carefully crafting a corrupt TIFF image, an attacker can trigger a buffer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of TIFF images. Systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4 are affected only by the TIFF NeXT RLE decoder issue (CVE-2006-3462). • How do I remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu?

So with three separate builds of WTP I've run the PowerShell command to remove Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps. With each build, it also removes the Start Menu. In the thread below, an MS Support person mentioned that that command was only for Windows
8.x and shouldn't be run on WTP. What? Then why is that command still available? And, why will it remove some Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps, but not others? Are they marked as System required? Why isn't the Start Menu marked as System required? You'd
think that the start menu would be pretty important.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/053f63bc-c174-44f1-8f6c-8ead1ad965fb/spartan-and-start-menu-on-10049?forum=WinPreview2014General
So, with the start menu being an XAML app, how do I safely remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu? I have no use for them and don't want them on my computer. Period. There has to be some command like the one we used
in Windows 8.x that will allow use to remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu.
Don't give an answer like "just right-click and uninstall". That doesn't work for all of these things, and do you know how long it takes to do that for all of those silly things? Too long! That's also not practical for an Enterprise desktop. It's
also not practical to leave all of that junk on the desktop, so don't suggest that either.
    Dan

The problem with PowerShell and all of those scripts is that those particular scripts require a lot of typing, or copy and paste, or having to figure out where all of those apps are stored and then insert their convoluted names into the script. For
me, scripting is like programming. I have no desire to be a programmer/developer.
I just want an option in Programs and Features to be able to turn these "features" off. We were able to do it in previous versions of Windows. If we didn't want Internet Games, we uncheck the box. If we don't want our users to be able to print
documents over the Internet, we uncheck the box. And so on down the line for any other "feature" we didn't want our enterprise users to have.
Or, we could turn those features off using the System Image Manager. Now we have to write some convoluted script with even more convoluted commands for even more convoluted names for things we don't want.
The easier script in Windows 8.x was just get-appxpackages -online | remove-appxpackages. That removed the majority of the apps for an individual user. The remove-appxprovisionedpackage command, with the convoluted name of the app, would remove them from
the hard drive - one app at a time, but that doesn't work in Windows 10.
So, they came up with a DISM command, but that doesn't work in Windows 10 either. I should say that with my limited developer skills I haven't found a way to make it work.
Again, I have no desire to be a developer/scripter. They are the same thing in my book. I'm a systems engineer. I do operating systems, not write applications.
    Dan
So, I guess there is no real answer to this question.

I cannot view some videos and participate in some websites since Adobe upgraded all to Flash 11.7. I have an older Mac G5 PowerPC (no Intel chip) running OS 10.5.8. I keep getting splash screens saying I have to update to Flash 11.7 but 11.7 is made for those Macs with an Intel chip. I am running the newest Flash for my system. It seems all concerned should have made Flash retro-compatible for those of us with older Macs. Is there a work around to this Flash requirement short of buying a new Mac with the Intel chip?

  • Flash Builder 4 with Flex SDK 4.0 for Intel App Up

There is some misinformation on Intel AppUp and the Melrose FAQ about being able to publish with Flash Builder 4.
    Intel App Up Program Submission
    According to http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/article/adobe-air-packaging-guide-atom-developer-progr am-submissions
"AIR app must be built using Flex Builder 3 with Flex SDK 3.5a.  Currently Flex Builder 4 with Flex SDK 4 is not supported."
    Melrose FAQ
    According to http://learn.adobe.com/wiki/display/melrose/Melrose+Developer+FAQ
"Q: Are there system requirements for enabling try and buy in AIR apps using Melrose?
A: You must have Adobe Flex Builder 3 or greater and Adobe AIR 1.5.3 or greater."
Is the Intel App Up statement correct?  If it is, could I get an explanation why?  I've been waiting for the last 3 months waiting for the Melrose SDK to deploy to Intel App Up and now I can't even submit my application.
    Thanks.

The current version of Melrose supports Flex 3.5 SDK for AIR applications running on AIR 1.5.3 runtime or higher. You can use Adobe Flex Builder 3 with Flex 3.5 SDK or Adobe Flash Builder 4 with Flex 3.5 SDK.
Support for Flex 4.1 SDK for AIR applications running on AIR 2.0 runtime should be available within a few weeks. Please note that we will not be able to support Flex 4.0 SDK because of certain technical challenges.

  • Trouble running "Universal Windows app that consumes data from the Azure Marketplace" sample

I am trying to run the sample titled "Universal Windows app that consumes data from the Azure Marketplace". I am not sure how to enter the credentials for the Zillow APIs.  I obtained a key from Zillow, but when I enter it per the instructions
in the sample, I still get an unauthorized (401) error.
The instructions say  Insert that key into the SampleDataSource file of your project in place of the string "Your account key goes here".
So I replaced my key in this line of code:
    request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("<Your account key goes here>",
                                        "<Your account key goes here>");
    Am I missing something else?

  • PowerPC and Intel based USB Drive

Is it possible to have a startup disk for both PowerPC and intel based Macs on the same USB disk?

A PowerPC can't boot from USB drives. It can be done with a FireWire drive. Partition with the Apple Partition Scheme, install PPC Tiger on one partition. Cone Tiger from an Intel Mac onto the other partition. Either Mac can boot from a disk with the Apple Partition scheme, but the Intel Macs cannot install or update it.

  • Possible to use both PowerPC and Intel-based systems together with Qmaster?

    Hello,
New to the Qmaster setup, I was wondering if it was possible to set up a Qmaster cluster mixing PowerPC and Intel-based systems. If it is possible, what version of Qmaster would support this type of cluster?

While it can work, note that if there is huge difference is processing speed, the PPC machine can actually slow down the process as everything waits for it to finish it's instance and copy it back.
It's worth a try but keep an eye on how the various computers perform.
    Have fun.

  • Upgrading Dual PowerPC to Intel ???

Hello all, I have a dual 1.8 PowerPC that I got in the end of Dec. 2005 and I was wondering a few things:
    * if it was worth it to upgrade the processors to the dual intel's and where to get. Mostly I was wondering if it was possible at all.
    * if it's worth it to upgrade my graphics card too, I have two monitors hooked up; one is the somewhat newer apple 20 monitor and another is a cheap 17 flat monitor.
    * I only have 1.25 of ram, was wondering where to get good inexpensive ram for this machine.
The work I do is mostly PS and flash, but I'm starting to use AfterEffects and FCP more and more lately for work.
My level of with the CPU hardware intermediary.
Thanks a bunch for who can help.

The Hatter is right. There really is no way to change a PowerPC computer into an Intel computer.
Its not like upgrading from an older Intel processor to a faster one. The hardware is completely different between PowerPC and Intel.
If you absolutely need Intel, a new machine is really the only way to go.
If that is not an option, upgrading the RAM on your G5 will give you improved performance. The more RAM the better. I have had good luck and decent prices by going through CompUSA for my RAM upgrades though there are Mac-friendly resellers all over the internet.

  • HT1531 Can you change the processor from PowerPC to Intel?

Can you change the processor from PowerPC to Intel?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's not possible. Intel-based Macs use completely different logic boards than PowerPC-based Macs because chips are different (Intel-based Macs use EFI instead of Open Firmware, or PRAM instead of NVRAM), so if you want a Intel processor on your computer, you need a new iMac

  • Easy moving from PowerPC to Intel

    Hi,
I've a plan to change Leopard Server from PowerPC to Intel.
Give me any ideas for easy moving? especially Blogs , MySQL, Mail data.
    thanks in advance.

You definitely can't drag and drop them. Adobe has all sorts of stuff sprayed all over the place.
    So do a reinstall.
Also IMPORTANT... remember to de-activate it on your old machine if you don't intend to continue using it there. You get 2 activations total... if you go over that you'll have to call Adobe to get them to help you manage the activations... so be sure to deactivate before you, say, re-format the old machine.
