PowerPivot for SharePoint configuration tool validation failed

Validation fails when I run the PowerPivot for SharePoint configuration tool.  I've set up a virtual machine with Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2012 (with SP 2) and SharePoint 2010.  The firewall is completely turned off (temporarily).
The SQL Server service is running (so is SQL Server Browser).  TCP/IP and Named Pipes are both enabled (disabling one or the other doesn't solve the problem).  Remote connections are enabled.  The services have been stopped and restarted every
time I make a change to something.  Still getting the following error.  Can anyone help?  Thank you in advance!
Cannot connect to the database server instance.  A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server.  The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and
that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Solved it.  I used the IP address as the server name, instead of using the standard naming convention.

  • Scaling Out PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013

I’ve been struggling with the TechNet/MSDN documentation on adding PowerPivot servers for scale-out implementation.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2dbddcc7-427a-4537-a8e2-56d99b9d967d
My test farm consists of 2 web front end servers and 2 application servers. I wanted to install PowerPivot on the 2 application servers for load balancing so I installed the PowerPivot/SSAS instance on both. I ran the PowerPivot configuration tool on one
of the web front end servers and added the 2 application servers for my PowerPivot servers. TechNet/MSDN talks about configuring the second instance by running the PowerPivot configuration tool when adding another PowerPivot server. However, I no longer see
any options on any of the servers when I run the PowerPivot configuration tool. When I check the services running on the servers, only one server is running the SQL Server PowerPivot System Service. I do see that both PowerPivot/SSAS instances have the PowerPivot
    database.
How do I configure the other application server to run the SQL Server PowerPivot System Service for load balancing?
    Thanks.

    Hi Edwin,
In a multi-server farm, all PowerPivot for SharePoint instances must be at the same version. If you applied service packs or updates to other PowerPivot servers that are already in the farm, the new instance you are adding must be updated to the same version
as the existing instance that is already in the farm. The new instance will be unavailable until the updates have been applied.
Try to check whether PowerPivot System Service or Analysis Services service listed on the both servers and t also verify whether services are in Started mode. If not you can start the PowerPivot System Service or Analysis Services service by using Central
Administration(as mentioned by Alex ) or by using Powershell.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210610.aspx
If the PowerPivot System Service or Analysis Services service up and running on the both servers, then system will automatically behave as load balanced.

  • Installing Powerpivot for Sharepoint 2013 with SQL Server 2008 R2

    Hi,
We are currently setting up a Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise farm with the backend database server being SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 - my question is can you install  Powerpivot for Sharepoint 2013 in this configuration and if so what are the steps?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Topology question for PowerPivot for SharePoint engine

We currently have a SP2013 farm with two web front end servers, two application servers and a SQL 2012SP1 SQL Cluster.  We plan to expand the farm with all BI functionalities by adding another application server to SP2013 farm, which will be dedicated
to all BI services, such as Excel service, PowerPivot, SSRS integrated mode, PerformancePoint, etc. and two Database servers (belong to DBA team): one of which will be used for Data Warehouse, another one for SSAS instances, including Multidemensional Cube
instance, Tabular mode instance. My question is where is the best place for PowerPivot for SharePoint engine.
    1. On the server that holds all SSAS engine (DBA team's server)
    2. On the new dedicated SharePoint BI application server
Theoratically, PowerPivot for SharePoint engine is only used by SharePoint, so it is better not mixed with those SSAS instance that needs DBA to assign permission. Of couse it'd be better if we can have a dedicated server for PowerPivot engine,
but we don't. If it is mixed with MD Cube engine and Tabular Mode engine, it might compete resource more than put it on dedicated SharePoint BI application server. In addition, will separating PowerPivot service application with its engine cause more network
traffic and affect performance. Will it be better if we just put it on SP2013 dedicated BI Application server?
    Like to hear your opinion.

Here's a way that I've seen implemented to switch sources amongst workbooks:
Create a "master file" Excel workbook that contains only the PowerPivot data model, and a blank Excel worksheet.  Upload this to SharePoint and create a BISM connection in the PowerPivot Gallery that points at this workbook url.  Here's a link
    describing a BISM connection:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg471575.aspx
If SharePoint is configured correctly, you can click on the icon for an Excel workbook from the BISM connection in the gallery.  This will open a thin client Excel workbook that has a data connection to the BISM.
Develop your reports in the thin client Excel workbooks.  The reports will be smaller files since the entire data model is not in them.  Also, all reports will be pointing to the same data model hosted on SharePoint (via the BISM connection) to
    keep things maintainable.
Treat the "master file" Excel workbook containing the PowerPivot data model in the same way that you would treat an OLAP cube.  Keep Dev, UAT, and Prod versions in each environment.
When migrating a new report from Dev to UAT, just modify the data connection to point at the UAT BISM instead of the Dev BISM.
Long term, if a decision is made to make the solution an SSAS Tabular instance, the BISM connection can be "re-pointed" at the SSAS instance and the reports will still work.  In this way, your reports can have Dev/UAT/Prod environments, the ability
to promote the solution to SSAS, and there should not be a need for rework if the design of the underlying model is maintained.

  • Upgrading PowerPivot for Sharepoint to Tabular. Will Sharepoint functionality remain?

Hello everyone I am planning on upgrading our current PowerPivot for Sharepoint instance of AS to a Tabular instance.  Currently we have the instance linked to our Sharepoint 2013 server allowing us to publish PowerPivot models to the PowerPivot gallery
in Sharepoint.  If we upgrade the instance to a full tabular model will the PowerPivot Gallery in Sharepoint still function and will we still be able to publish models as we can with the current instance?

The Gallery will work with Tabular mode Analysis Services. You can create .bism files in the gallery and people can create PowerView models just like the would from a Sharepoint instance.
However the publishing method is completely different. Tabular models are created and deployed from SSDT (SQL Server Developer Tools). You can't deploy from Excel to a Tabular mode server.

  • PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013 experience

    Hi,
Does anybody have practical experience with PowerPivot for SharePoint (especially SharePoint 2013) to implement a self-service BI scenario in an on premise environment?  Some questions that I’m particular interested in:
    • What major problems did you experience during the actual implementation?
    • Experience in connection to existing SQL Server Data Warehouses as a PowerPivot data source?
    • Authentication of “SSAS server in SharePoint mode” to existing SharePoint 2013 farm
    • Resource Load on existing SharePoint application and SQL Server, for example does it make sense to create a dedicated application server for the Excel /PowerPivot service application, for performance / future scalability reasons?
    • Hardware suggestion for a dedicated “SSAS server in SharePoint mode” for a total of 1000 PowerPivot users
    Thanks

    Hi Ibmkahm2,
According to your description, you need to implement business intelligence in SharePoint Server 2013, right?
The business intelligence tools for SharePoint Server 2013 include Power View for SharePoint, SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services for SharePoint, Power Pivot for SharePoint, Excel Services, PerformancePoint Services, and Visio Services. Here are some
    useful links for you reference.

  • SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint

  • Can we install PowerPivot for SharePoint on a SQL cluster?

We are going to deploy SharePoint 2013 with PowerPivot for SharePoint (installed from SQL Server media). According to what I've read out there for a small or medium farm, the recommendation is to install PowerPivot for SharePoint on
every SharePoint application server in the farm. However, accoding to the licensing doc I've pasted below, PowerPivot can be run outside the SharePoint farm. We are going with SQL Server 2012 Enterprise edition. PowerPivot requires a SQL
Server license for each server. To save money on licenisng, can we install PowerPivot for SharePoint on the 2 SQL Server cluster nodes (as a separate instance of course)?
Example License Topologies and Costs for SQL Server 2012 Self-Service Business Intelligence
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn305848(v=sql.110).aspx
    http://vcollogan.knows.it http://twitter.com/orbhot

    Hi Vincent,
PowerPivot for SharePoint is an Analysis Services instance in tabular mode. This
whitepaper mentions that clustering Analysis Services in SharePoint-integrated mode is not supported (page 8 under SSAS Server Modes.) You can, however, install it as a standalone
instance on the nodes of the cluster and let SharePoint handle the load balancing.
My apologies for the confusion on installing the SharePoint binaries on the PowerPivot instance. You don't need to install the SharePoint binaries if it is outside of the SharePoint farm. I was looking at my build documentation where I have both Reporting
Services and PowerPivot on the same machine with the same reason - reduce licensing cost - and similar to the 3-tier topology but with all of the service application and content databases on the database tier.

  • Where to install SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint?

The environment is SharePoint 2013 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2012 SP2 Enterprise Edition.
SQL Server 2012 SP2 Enterprise Edition is installed as default instance on a dedicated box.   All the features are selected in the Feature Selection windows during installation (see image).
Now, I need to install SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint.   Should it be installed on the same dedicated box?  If I understand correctly, I need to select the SQL Server PowerPivot for SharepPoint option and uncheck
the checkbox Add SQL Server Database Relational Engine Services to this installation.   Does this option also install SSAS?  Since there is already an existing SSAS, will that cause problem?

    Hi PcSQL66,
To install SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint, you need to select SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint
on the Setup Role page. Please refer to the screenshot below.
And if you have a SSAS instance installed in your server, install SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint will install another SSAS instance.
For the detail information, please refer to the link below.

    Hello Challen Fu
I would be so grateful if you could please help me out
I have been trying to find a solution to the same error message
In my case, the power pivot reports were working before on a regular team  site , but then two things changed:
    a)  I  created a toplevel site using the BI Center template. Now I am using a Business Intelligence template , created a power pivot gallery library and uploaded a few powerpivot reports
    b)  On the  backend, the database instance was upgrated to SQL Server 2012
Front end Server VDSP01  remains  SQL Server 2008 R 2 where Sharepoint 2010  was installed as a FARM
Now, the reports will display in sharepoing however they will not refresh. the error message i get is the same.
     Scenario recap:
    a- Server VDSP01  uses SQL Server 2008 R 2 where Sharepoint 2010  was installed as a FARM
b- On the back end,  the database instance name was replaced with SQL 2012 Server:
               from SQL Server 2008 R 2 (instance DBDEV-COTS\COTS)
               to     SQL Server 2012 ( instance VTSQL01\COTS)
    c-  I was told that:
         From VDSP01, they ran
CliConfg.exe   to create SQL Server Alias :
           where    BEFORE: vdsharepoint -->  DBDEV-COTS\COTS
                and  AFTER    : vdsharepoint -->  VTSQL01\COTS

  • [CC] Search for Workaround for old Bug: XML Validation fails

In Dreamweaver the validation of an XHTML document "as XML" fails.
    Result:
An exception occurred! Type:NetAccessorException, Message:Could not open file: http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd[xml]
The bug seems to be very old:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/874435
Do you know any workaround? Is there may be a plugin which can validate XML?
    Thanks.

I appreciate your detailed answers, David. It's a pleasure to discuss with you
My own criterium, if a non-fixing is shameful or not, does not depend on the frequency of the usage of a function (by me or any other user).
It depends on the facts, that Adobe knows the bug since many years and that it is a bug in a very basic module - the search and replace module.
I take it as a proof of my assumption, that Adobe behaves arrogantly in many ways.
They just don't care about maintanance.
Thanks for filing the bug about "validate as xml".
I logged into my prerelease account (I took part some years ago). But it seems that I have no access to the bug database.
In my prerelease account there's no link to the bug database.
I agree with you, that concerns would have more chances to be read by developers when you talk about them in the pre release forums.
But my experiences with filing bugs are so disappointing, that I do not like to spend my time anymore for that.
While betatesting we had a "personal usability engineer" to talk to him. I talked a lot to him, constructively and polite. But in fact, he has no influence to the decisions which bugs will fixed and which not.
We can talk about the search and replace module in 10 years.
I'm sure it will look the same as today. It will have the same bugs as today. It will have the same functionality as today.
No improvement at all in such an important module.
That's my assumption based on the experience of the last 8 years.

  • PowerPivot for Sharepoint: can I update the data model?

I have an Excel file that contains a Power Pivot data model. After running some Power View analysis, I found out that my model was missing some relationships and hierarchies, so I wanted to edit my underlying data model, but I couldn't directly find a way..
What's the easiest way to do that? Is there even a way to do this?

    Hi Jasper,
You can do this by opening the workbook from SharePoint in Excel on your desktop and then making the changes. When you save these changes they will be applied to the version in SharePoint.
If you manually download the workbook to a location of your choice, you can then make the changes but they won't automatically be applied to version in SharePoint when you save them. After making your changes to the copy, you can use the 'Upload Document'
option on the SharePoint ribbon to add it to the same location as the existing version. Ensure that the updated workbook has the same name as the current version and double check that the 'Add as a new version to existing files' option is ticked.
    Regards,
    Michael
