Powerpoint 2013 throwing 'File in Use' errors when saving to a network drive, file is NOT in use

One of our sites is having a strange issue when saving to a network location in Powerpoint.  I'm not sure it's a Powerpoint problem, but it's a place to start...
When saving a ppt to a mapped network drive (the client is running Windows 8 / Office 2013, the network drive is a DFS share, pointed to a Server 2012 machine if that matters), users will almost always get the following error:
"Someone else is working in (filepath\name) right now. Please try again later."
This happens regardless of where the file is being saved on the network drive, in fact it happens even when there is no pre-existing file with that name in the location.  So, even if I'm saving a brand new copy of test.pptx to F:\Share\PPT where there
is not currently a test.pptx, I get the error.
Word, Excel, and all other tested apps save properly.  Powerpoint can save correctly to the local computer, but not to the network drive or to My Documents (which redirects to the same network drive).
When the error pops up, if I look in Open Files in Computer Management on the Fileserver, I see the file I'm trying to save listed as being open, but it shows 'Disconnected' rather than a username.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - again, not sure that this is a Powerpoint problem - could be Windows 8 or some mysterious DFS thing...
Thanks.

Hello,
Been having a very similar issue in our environment and just came across this thread while Googling and looking for answers.
In our case, we have Windows 7 clients and 3 main files servers - 2 are Server 2008 R2, and one is Server 2012.  We use PeerLink File Collaboration to sync the files between
the servers (similar concept to DFS).  For us, it seems to happen specifically with Excel 2013, and only when saving to the Server 2012 file server.  I can reproduce the message pretty much every time.  After seeing your post,
I tried it in Powerpoint just out of curiosity, but it saved properly - Word saves properly as well.
Been doing a bunch of testing to try and narrow it down, and this is what I've found:
Excel 2013 -> Server 2012 = error message.
Excel 2013 -> Server 2008 R2 = no error message.
Excel 2010 -> Server 2008 AND Server 2012 = no error message.
<o:p>We've been leaning towards the PeerLink replication as the culprit up to this point, but last night I did some testing with the PeerLink Collaboration turned off, and
still received the error message.. so now I'm even more confused!
I see that it's been a few months since your post..  have you made any progress here?</o:p>

  • Acrobat X: File I/O Error when saving Combined File

I combined several PDF files using the Combine Files in a Single PDF feature.  The combining process works fine except when I try to save the resulting "Binder1" I repeatedly get a file I/O error and cannot save the Binder.  Manually combining the files works, but is considerably inefficient.  Thoughts?

    Hi ,
Did combining multiple documents ever work perfectly on your installation or has it always been such problematic ?
Seeing the intermittene behavior of combine on your installation , I would suggest you to re-install Acrobat on your machine and please let me know if the problem is resolved . Thanks for your patience.

  • Error when saving a html or css file

    Hello,
Everytime I try to make a new file or saving a file with save or save all I see this message:
An error has occured when trying to save the file C://programm files/Adobe/Adobe code preview 3/samples/root/getting started/index.html. the permissions do not allow to make modifications.

    Roelof

    Hi Roelof,
Edge Code basically treats a folder as a "project". So create a folder on your hard drive, then use File->Open Folder to open that folder and you can start creating files with File->New inside of that folder to create your project.
FYI - Down the road we're looking to add some broader template support for things like HTML5Boilerplate, or Bootstrap, or other "starters" that are out there but that's still very much in the idea phase, so for now you'll have to download those into a folder and just have Edge Code open that folder.
But if you have thoughts about how you'd want to see that work, let me know!

  • Getting this error when saving: Names longer than 31 characters are not supported on the destination volume

I've just tried to save a document in Pages and got this error
Names longer than 31 characters are not supported on the destination volume
Never had a problem like this before. I haven't changed disks or formatted disks. Running latest Yosemite 10.10
The only reference I can find to this error on the internet says that it's for applications prior to OS X which I think we can discount.
The only other reference I can find in the support community relates to one person with problems saving attachments in Mail and dates from early 2014.
Can anybody give me a suggestion on what I might need to do?
    Thanks

What format are you saving to?
Where are you saving the files to and what is that volume formatted as?
Have you tested with files from other applications, such as TextEdit?

  • Error message when mapping to a network drive of a DFS share on Windows 7

    Hi,
We are getting the following error when mapping to a network drive of a DFS share on Windows 7:
“The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred:
A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated."
In our case, the user logs on his workstation using his regular domain account, then maps to the network DFS share using the service account of an application.
There is a fix from Microsoft (MS KB968264). But this fix requires disabling the "Network access: Do not allow storage of credentials or .NET Passports for network authentication” property. This is against the Microsoft own best practices (Network access:
“Do not allow storage of passwords and credentials for network authentication” should be set to
ENABLED), and is NOT acceptable for us for obvious security reasons.
Question: Does anyone know an alternative fix to this issue that does not introduce security risks?
    Thank you in advance!
    Mdjona

Again I have tried this, but in my program if I try to save to the a drive when no disk is inserted, the JOptionPane i want to display is not coming up.
    the system prints out
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: A:\image.jpg <The device is not ready>
If that makes any sense to you

  • Upload Center 2010 error when saving Powerpoint 2010 file to SharePoint 2013

I'm experiencing an issue when attempting to save a Powerpoint 2010 file to our SharePoint 2013 farm.  If a user opens the file in Edit mode, when saving the file Upload Center 2010 complains the upload failed, and PowerPoint 2010 displays a message
"Upload Failed  The server version of this file was updated by another author" and 2 buttons are displayed "Keep My Version" and "Keep Server Version".  This is incorrect though, because I confirmed on the server end
the changes have been made.  If a user keeps hitting save, sometimes it won't fail during the upload.
If a user opens a file in Read Only mode, then clicks on the Edit button in Powerpoint 2010 and saves the changes, they are then prompted by the error "Refresh Required  This file needs to be refreshed with updates.  Click Save to refresh
and retry uploading your changes." Once again this is incorrect, as the changes have already been made in SharePoint.
I've recreated this error on multiple workstations, have tried re-installing Upload Center 2010, and have tried complete repairs of Office 2010.  The occur continues to persist.  This only occurs with Powerpoint 2010 though, and none of the other
Office 2010 products.  I feel this is a bug in Upload Center 2010 with SharePoint 2013, because when I save from PowerPoint 2010 through a WebDAV connection over file explorer, it saves fine without any issue.
Has anyone run into this problem before?  Below are some screenshots of the errors.
Here's the error when opening in Edit mode:
Here's the error when opening in Read Only mode, and then clicking on Edit in PowerPoint:

  • GPO Restrict All Drives policy throwing error when saving/opening in Office 2013

We're running Windows 8.1 x86 and have a GPO that, among other things, restricts access to all drives.
In all Office applications, when a user clicks File > Save As > Computer > Browse (or any recent folders like 'Desktop', 'Documents' etc.) it throws an error:  "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.
Please contact your system administrator." When the user clicks 'OK', they are able to save to the Desktop or Documents folder without further error.
When this policy setting is disabled, this error no longer appears.
So the policy isn't actually causing problems with functionality, it just causes an error which is confusing and annoying to the users.
Has anyone experienced this before? Or can anyone point me in the right direction for a resolution?
    Thanks in advance!!

"But this policy does not prevent users from using programs to access local and network drives, in
your case, use Office to access the drives."
I am using Office to access the drives, Kapaal. The only place that we allow users to save documents is the desktop and this functionality works - it just throws an
error every time you try to save.
I'll post in the Group Policy forum and see if I can get an answer.
    Thanks!

  • I get the following error when trying to open a pdf file... '*pdf.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read"

I get the following error when trying to open a pdf file... '*pdf.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read". I am able to open pdf files in IE and other programs.

I am encountering the same problem -- though with .qfx files from my bank. This worked fine in Firefox 31 ESR, but since upgrading to Firefox 33.0, I get the "<name>.qfx.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read" when I attempt to download. (I should add that downloading PDF statements from the same site works fine, and that the qfx downloads work fine in IE and Chrome.)
I tried safe mode, it is still broken. Tried v34 beta, no luck. I reverted to version 31, it works again.
I guess I will stick with the older version until a solution is found...or just use an alternate browser to download my financial data.

  • Error when Saving Files  ID=-39

We are using CS5 on iMac and get the following error when saving:
Can't save preview, but all other information was saved successfully. The file ended unexpectedly. Try using a backup copy. ID = -39
Generally after receiving this error the file is corrupt.
What can we do?  Do you need more info?  I am not sure what to do with this error.

Most probably that is your problem.
Try if saving to your hard disk solves your problem.

While using a drop-down menu i.e. File, edit, image, or even when saving as and choosing the file type; the list appears and I am able to highlight what i want but cannot click on anything. This is becoming incredibly frustrating. It happens at random time and a restart of the computer is all that helps, then with out any notice it starts to do this again.  Mac Book Pro i7 2.2 16 GB 1333 Ram, (2) 450GB SSD both internal to machine. At this point I am losing file because I am unable to save in the file type I need. Does anyone out there know how to solve this issue?
    Thanks

I haven't been unify photoshop much in the past month, but I did try your suggestion and it seemed to work for a while. Today when i went to save a document the same thing happened: click on file>save at this point I can not click on save even though it is highlighted. Tryed to use command s that brings up the save dialogue box, but when I try to change file type I again cannot select it from the drop down menu.
