Powerpoint compatibility

To my surprise, Keynote is more compatible with Windows MS Office than Powerpoint 2008 for Mac! I have tried to open several presentation from powerpoint windows on the Mac, and the result is terrible. Terrible! Keynote, on the other hand, gives a credible representation of the presentation.
The trouble is, of course, that although Keynote gives a fair representation of powerpoint files, it is not an exact reproduction. And you don't want to open a powerpoint file from someone using windows in Keynote, modify it, and export to powerpoint again. Surely something will be lost in translation.
I'm quite disappointed with powerpoint. My main reason to have it is for compatibility reasons. My question is: what do people do if they need to collaborate on a presentation with someone using windows? Is openoffice for Mac a solution (still, assuming that the windows person continues to use powerpoint)?

Yes, I'm also surprised. The main thing is graphics. Many figures (typically those imported from other programs than powerpoint) disappear or get distorted when the presentation is imported into powerpoint for Mac. I would assume it also happens the other way round, when opening a Mac Powerpoint presentation in Windows. I guess the fundamental graphics formats of Mac and Windows are different, and powerpoint does a poor job at converting, while Keynote actually does a pretty good job. It also happens in Word, but to a lesser extend. And of course, graphics is central to presentations but secondary to documents, so it's more of a problem in powerpoint.

  • Sharepoint and Powerpoint compatability

    Good morning,
Just wondering if anyone knows if the following is possible.
Within SharePoint we have hundreds of documents but for this example I wil refer to powerpoint, is there anyway that when you open up the powerpoint presentation from workspace that the footer automatically updates and displays the footer with what version
the document is on within SharePoint?
Thanks for any help you can offer

Word has a feature that could do that called QuickParts, but I don't think there's anything like that in PowerPoint. You may be able to do it with some VBA scripting (CustomDocumentProperties). See:

  • Problems with displaying tables from windows software in Powerpoint

I have been having some problems with powerpoint presentations that include tables from specific windows software. These tables were produced with the software package called SPSS for windows. The font that's used for these tables is Tahoma. The powerpoint presentations were made on a windows operated computer where the tables were pasted into the slides as pictures.
When opening these presentations on my MacBook these tables are presented in a way that is impossible to read. The tables are mostly empty while some unclear symbols are inconsitently divided over the table. The original table existed out of a combination between text in the first row and collom and numbers in the other cells.
Has anybody had any experience with this problem or something similar? Any suggestions on what to look for when trying to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance!!
    Regards.
    Jochem

Depending on the software you use to display the presentation on your Mac I suggest posting your request either here
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1191
    or here
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=774
If you are using a non-Apple-software (e.g. NeoOffice or OpenOffice) I suggest the support forums for the specific product you use.
You will hopefully get more helpful answers in these forums as you would get here, as this issue is not a Windows/Mac OS X compatibility issue but a Powerpoint compatibility issue.

  • Export to powerpoint not working for certain views

    Hi All,
I am in the process of implementation of STVN 2.1 Pre EHP3 version of Nakisa OrgChart for one of my clients.
During testing, it is observed that export to powerpoint object is not working for the following views.
    1. Condensed Org. Chart
    2. Compressed OrgChart -Only works when we expand at least one position
    3. Horizontal OrgChart - Condensed children-Only works when we expand at least one position
In all the other views the export to Powerpoint object are working fine.
Export of powerpoint image is working in all the scenarios. We are facing issue only with powerpoint object.
I have implemented Export Pack 3.0 for OrgChart.
    J. Thomas

    Hi Luke,
    Thanks for the response.
Yes...I have installed SP1.0. I have also applied Export Pack 3.0.
The following features are working fine.
    1) Export to PDF
    2) Export to JPEG
    3) Export to Powerpoint Image.
Export to Powerpoint Object is also working fine if the style is 'Vertical'. The issue is only in case of 'Condensed', 'Compressed' and 'Horizontal OrgChart - Condensed children' sytles. Here again, if we expand at least one position, the export is working.
The error message that is flashed for the user is the usual one....pasted below.

  • Exports to PowerPoint not editable

My exports from Keynote to PowerPoint will play, but they crash whenever I try to edit them. Any suggestions?
I am also losing my builds of bullet points on the slides. They all appear at once. I have exported builds before without problem, so I am puzzled by this new quirk.

  • Converting .fla to .mov to .mp4 for imbedding in Powerpoint

    Hello,
I've been running into issues with the compression of my flash animations when imbedding them into powerpoint. The .mov files provide sharp playback, but after they are converted to mp4, the resolution drops. I need mp4 files so that the movies are compatible with both Mac and PC versions of powerpoint. I have changed the settings to increase the frames per second, and have the highest qualities selected when converting from .mov to .mp4 without luck.
Does anyone have any advice for this issue? Is there a better way to convert .fla to .mp4 for PC Powerpoint compatibility?
    Thanks!

I happily landed on this question-item in my quest for for ways to  generate MP4 from a FLA files...but now that I am here....:
I agree. I think this is a relevant question.
    Kind regards,

  • Copying Windows files (pdf, jpg, .docx) to iPad?

We frequently travel with our dogs and we like to have some of their medical records with us.
    Vaccination records, certificates, etc.
I have those on my Windows 7 machine as pdf's, jpg's and Word documents.
I'd like to get a copy (they are usually good for a year) to my iPad so that we would have easy access to it.
I know how to make a new folder and move apps into that folder.
What is the best way to get these kind of files to my iPad? Or is there an app for this?
Thanks for any help or advice!

You can't create folders for file storage on the iPad like you can on a computer. On the iPad, documents are stored in an app that is compatible with that particular file type. An app that can save, edit or create that file type is what you need.
For PDF files, there are free apps such as Apple's iBooks and Adobe Reader. Both apps will store PDFs for viewing,, but Reader will lay to annotate the PDFs. There are scads of other apps that work with PDFs, but these two are free.
For the MS office files, Word, Excel and PowerPoint compatibility there apps available in the app store like Quick Office Pro and Documents to Go. Take a look at those and see what you think. Apple also has their iWorks suite of apps, Pages, Numbers and Keynote that are compatible with the MS Office apps.
You can email files to the iPad, use something like DropBox to transfer files and for apps that support file sharing - you can use iOS file sharing with iTunes on your computer.
    iOS: About file sharing.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4094
You should be able to email jpg files and then save them in the Photos app on the iPad.
GoodReader is one app that allows for some file structure. I do not use it and don't know much about it. You can check it out here and in the app store as well.

  • How far is the compatibility with PowerPoint and Keynote '09?

    Hello everyone
I love making presentations and strangely while I'm an Apple fan the only thing I still didn't convert to is iWork
Keynote is the best presentation tool I ever saw. The problem is with playing the presentations in college or anywhere else.
I know that keynote is compatible with PowerPoint, but how far?
Will the beautiful transitions and animations on keynote work on PowerPoint? Alongside with the beautiful graphics, charts and backgrounds?
    Thanks

I would say the compatibility is "just good enough". If you NEED to use it you will, but you don't want to ever NEED it.
You shoud think of the compatibility as being like trying to playback high resolution, color, widescreen, Dolby stereo content on a small black and white mono tv. There are some things that old telly just won't be capable of. Sure, you can see the motion and hear something, but you're ultimately limited by what you use to PLAYBACK the content, not what you used to CREATE it.
Because Keynote has features that PowerPoint doesn't, PowerPoint will never be able to playback exactly what you see in Keynote. The reverse is true as well.

  • PowerPoint 2011 Compatibility

I have been working on improving PowerPoint presentations for a friend of mine. I am neither a graphic designer or technologically advanced.
When she gives her presentations, she uses either Keynote on her iPad or a Windows laptop. Because I am at least familiar with font compatibility issues, I have been saving two copies of the .pptx; one in it's original format and one with .png images. I am running into issues of quality with the .png slides. I'm not sure if the problem is the file type, pixels, both, or something else. The current PPT revamp I am working on includes text animations. While I understand that PowerPoint Mac 2011 cannot embed fonts when saving, I need to be sure that the text shows up the way I designed it. I thought about saving each text box as an image and then replacing the text box with the saved image, but I feel like there should be an easier way to fix this problem.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

I suggest you post your question on the Microsoft Mac forums...http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac

  • Powerpoint-javahelp compatibility???

Hi everyone, I'm having problems including a powerpoint slide with a hyperlink in javahelp. The slide has been saved as a htm doc, and I have included entries in the toc and map. The link does not work however. Is powerpoint compatible with javahelp, or have i missed something really obvious. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi ren25,
as long as it has been saved as HTML 3.2 it should work. Once it is saved as HTML it should not be a question of compatibility to PowerPoint anymore.
Also, you should be sure to save any images a JPEG and see that the HTML file has proper references to respective images.

  • Keynote compatibility w/Powerpoint

My daughter is supposed to do a Powerpoint presentation for her A&P class and burn it to a cd. If she does her presentation on Keynote for Mac will her prof be able to access it through his Powerpoint?

Have you checked Microsoft's website to ensure that you're supplying the right file format?
Also, if there is a requirement that Windows users of PowerPoint open files with no problems, then you're doing yourself a disservice by not buying PowerPoint. Keynote is an excellent tool and when giving a presentation it still beats PowerPoint handily. However, Keynote isn't and will likely never be a replacement for PowerPoint.
There are other free tools that DO aspire to be carbon copy clones of PowerPoint, though, you may want to check those out.

  • Will Presenter eventually be compatable with non-PowerPoint presentation software?

I can see the advantages to having a PowerPoint plugin, but
extending capatability to something like OpenOffice would be a
great way to pull in users from all OS and avoid forcing Connect
    users to purchase MS Office.
Or, perhaps, an Adobe-forged online/local editor for
Presenter presentations would make more sense to avoid the use of
third-party apps altogether. Just wondering if this is something
    that is being looked into...
    Thanks.

This post was 2005 and no answer till now???!!!??? where are the admins? and where Adobe?!
I wanted to test presenter 7 because I general realy like adobe products, but I won't buy, just because Adobe wan't it, Microsoft Office products. I am using OpenOffice for more than 2 years and I am realy happy with it. So no reason to change.
I realy have to say, that I don't understand the adobe politic to exclude open source software.

  • Compatibility with PowerPoint?

I have edited videos in PE9 for Mac and saved them as both MOV and MPG files. Both formats play in VLC, and as expected, only the MOV plays in QuickTime. However, when I try to insert either format into PowerPoint (ver 2011 for Mac), an error message pops up stating that the "file is non-standard or QuickTime is not installed properly". PowerPoint will play other avi, mpg, or mov files but seems to hang only on the ones I create in PE9. I am assuming there is something about the codec but not sure how to resolve it. Any suggestions?

I agree that this is most definitely a CODEC issue. Per John T's rec., finding out which CODEC's PP will accept will tell you how you need to Export/Share your AV files.
For some background on AV file formats as "wrappers," this ARTICLE might be useful.
For more discussion on CODEC's, see this ARTICLE.
    Good luck,

PS - also, please update the thread, when you get the details of what PP for Mac wants, as it will likely help others in the future.
