PowerPoint problem

I have a G5 iMac with its usual battery of software. I also have the Student and Teachers addition of MS Office. No problems with most modes.
However, if I try to open a PowerPoint file included in an e-mail using Mail, the system hangs up requiring a forced quit of PowerPoint. Download it to disk and it opens and runs normally, usually.
Is this common and is there a fix?
Charley

Good question, but although I'm sure there are people on this forum who know the answer, you might get one faster by posting to a Microsoft board.
Let us know if you get an answer,

  • The real powerpoint problem

The reason for this question about powerpoint is that the image quality of the powerpoint became unacceptable once the powerpoint slides were re-created as TIFF files and imported into Final Cut, added to an existing video, then exported as an MPEG-2 file for creation as a looping video.
This led me to investigate DVD@access as a way to simply tell the DVD to play the video, then play the powerpoint, then start over. I figured that if the powerpoint played natively, the image quality problems would be solved, but maybe this is not possible.
    Any ideas?
    Steve

hi Steve, I realise this is a DVDSP3 thread but here's another approach I used some time back for some work slides. I did try and take the playable DVD approach with powerpoint so I will mention this first then let you know about another approach that I think is superior.
    1) Powerpoint: as you say, the TIFF images from PPT are not up to your needs. Whether it is resolution or just obvious artifacts on the images when played out for a video_ts from after authoring from DVDSP3 for example. so.. try this:
    • make your PPT up with builds and transitions as you wish. Set the slide viewing time to 5 seconds.
    • export as a QUICKTIME movie using the ANIMATION CODEC. (not other ones you may have). This is important because you will have something approaching uncompressed that you can work with. (Optionally add CHAPTER MARKERS with FCP or QTPLAYER etc)
    • Tweak your authoring title as you do in DVD SP3... then ENCODE this with DVDSP3 as you source. When this is finished erase/delete/purge the previous QT file.
    • you may then add CHAPTER marks in DVDSP3 or BEFORE HAND in FCP or QTIME PRO for you slideshow navigation from most players.
    • drawback is that other navigations functions such as DVD@access etc may not work. I have not used this.
    • simply this works ok.. PLay out as a DVD5 title or from the host machine as a VIDEO_TS .. you get the idea. VLC etc etc
    • this is also very cool for having the 'presentation' to your video ipod. Use composite cable to projector/beamer. Limited to 640x480 but has save me a few times when pc laptop fails.
OPTION#2: forget the DVD approach and use H.264/AVC instead as:
    • prpare you .ppt as above.
    • export as a QT movie using APPLE ANIMATION CODEC as above. This is a temporary file you will purge later.
    • tweak the QT movie with the usual tools form FCS etc.... and add stuff you need for the fonal thing such as audio etc etc and voice over if you want that.
    • then export as an H.264/AVC at the resolution you need for your show.. 1024x768 or less at around 1.5Mbs multipass is about right. Most windows low end laptops can play this with VLC or QT. Must use 'space bar" or pause to work through presentation with audience.
    • advantages are tha you get visually the same look for far less storage space required and NO DVD .
    • DVD chapter navigation is not possible of course , however this can be simply managed by invisible ACTION SPRITES to your H.264 MOVIE using tools from ADOBE. THe downside of this approach is that is can be tricky to do, but worth it.
    That is essentially is.
Having said all that, my preferred method is to use APPLE KEYNOTE (iWORK '08) as a previous poster on your thread has stated. It is easy to use and performs what I have described above is an easy way using a similay technique under the covers.
 Keynote also permits presentations of varying resolutions up to HD or customisable resolutions. Does PPT do this?? I dunno.
Keynote also has many other goodies in it , especially voice over nd synchronisation of play out based on triggers I recall. HOwever it is not transportable to people that dont have KEYNOTE... (same as .ppt ).
anyway, this works or me. I am a greta fan of H.264.AVC.

  • Powerpoint Problems/Help!

    Hi,
I've recently got a MacBook Air (Yup, I'm new, bear with me!), and I've been experience problems with loading Powerpoint. When I put the Powerpoint to "fullscreen", after a small period of time the whole Powerpoint grows smaller, and shifts to one side of the screen (shown in the printscreen below).
ANOTHER thing is that when I try and shift between desktops, to go for example, on the one above, then it just shifts one more to the left, for some very strange reason... It's highly irritating!
I would highly appreciate any help! Thank you in advance!

Quit Powerpoint. Click anywhere on the desktop. (At the top of your screen you will see Finder to the right of the Apple.)
Hold the Option key down and move the cursor to the Go menu and click. From the drop down list select Library. In Library open the folder called Preferences. In there look for a file called com.microsoft.Powerpoint.plist. Move that file to the trash.
    Restart Powerpoint.
Post back if the problem persists.

  • Safe boot solves PowerPoint problem; how do I fix problem at source?

I was trying to display a slide show in MS Powerpoint 2011 on my MacBook Air, but PowerPoint crashed every time I tried to launch the slide show. I found a Microsoft support article, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/975723?linkId=11072873, that suggested booting my computer in Safe mode and seeing if PowerPoint worked then. In fact, it does!
My question is, what has Safe boot revealed about why PowerPoint crashes when I try to display a slide show? Is there a way to fix the problem that causes PowerPoint to crash so that I don't have to boot into Safe Mode every time I want to do a PowerPoint slide show?

Put the disk in the computer and restart while holding the C key down. You pretend you want to reinstall the OS and go through the first two steps, until the screen just after the language selectiion screen.
On this screen you will see a menu bar. Click Utilities in the menu bar, and select Disk Utility. When DU is up and running, do this:
In the list at the left, select your start up disk- the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
When the repair is completed, quit DU and restart the computer.

  • Powerpoint problem after downloading lion

I am using an older macbook pro from late 2007.  I have a powerpoint presentation that I use with a Dell projector.
The computer dell connection seems to be fine for most things.  I can play video, show the powerpoint slides manually etc just fine.  But when I press Play on powerpoint all I get is a jumble of colors.  Before upgrading to Lion I never had any problems like this.  When I am just using the computer I can powerpoint seems to be working normally.  Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?  Thank you so much.

  • How do I  see powerpoint presentation on  VGA projector?

I have the mini DVI to VGA adapter. After I connect my macbook to a vga projector what function key or command do I use to see my powerpoint presentation on the VGA projector?

It is essentially 'plug and play' - this was taken from the following linked site...
Tip: To make sure that your computer automatically detects theexternal display or projector, be sure you plug the adapter into theexternal display or projector before you plug it into the computer.

If you Macbook screen does appear and you still have powerpoint problems then the issue may be with your presentation as whatever appears on your screen should appear on your projector.

  • Powerpoint 2013 throwing 'File in Use' errors when saving to a network drive, file is NOT in use

One of our sites is having a strange issue when saving to a network location in Powerpoint.  I'm not sure it's a Powerpoint problem, but it's a place to start...
When saving a ppt to a mapped network drive (the client is running Windows 8 / Office 2013, the network drive is a DFS share, pointed to a Server 2012 machine if that matters), users will almost always get the following error:
"Someone else is working in (filepath\name) right now. Please try again later."
This happens regardless of where the file is being saved on the network drive, in fact it happens even when there is no pre-existing file with that name in the location.  So, even if I'm saving a brand new copy of test.pptx to F:\Share\PPT where there
is not currently a test.pptx, I get the error.
Word, Excel, and all other tested apps save properly.  Powerpoint can save correctly to the local computer, but not to the network drive or to My Documents (which redirects to the same network drive).
When the error pops up, if I look in Open Files in Computer Management on the Fileserver, I see the file I'm trying to save listed as being open, but it shows 'Disconnected' rather than a username.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - again, not sure that this is a Powerpoint problem - could be Windows 8 or some mysterious DFS thing...
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Been having a very similar issue in our environment and just came across this thread while Googling and looking for answers.
In our case, we have Windows 7 clients and 3 main files servers - 2 are Server 2008 R2, and one is Server 2012.  We use PeerLink File Collaboration to sync the files between
the servers (similar concept to DFS).  For us, it seems to happen specifically with Excel 2013, and only when saving to the Server 2012 file server.  I can reproduce the message pretty much every time.  After seeing your post,
I tried it in Powerpoint just out of curiosity, but it saved properly - Word saves properly as well.
Been doing a bunch of testing to try and narrow it down, and this is what I've found:
    Excel 2013 -> Server 2012 = error message.
    Excel 2013 -> Server 2008 R2 = no error message.
    Excel 2010 -> Server 2008 AND Server 2012 = no error message.
<o:p>We've been leaning towards the PeerLink replication as the culprit up to this point, but last night I did some testing with the PeerLink Collaboration turned off, and
still received the error message.. so now I'm even more confused!
I see that it's been a few months since your post..  have you made any progress here?</o:p>

  • I cant convert PowerPoint to PDF it keeps showing no text etc why?

I am unable to convert PowerPoint to a PDF. This should be a simple selection of Save As Type and select PDF. But when it converts it then show the design only but no content in the document.
I have not had issues before this past week as I recall. Can someone help me maybe my settings are off?
    Thanks!

"Save as" from PowerPoint?  In this case, it is a PowerPoint problem.
Adobe Reader cannot perform such a conversion, except from PDF to text.

  • Exporting videos for use in PowerPoint

I have a seven minute video I am trying to export for use in a PowerPoint presentation. Everything plays fine - the video is more grainy that I would have liked - but the titles just show up as black screens. I can still hear the audio but it will just flash the words for a split second and then turn to a black screen.
Do you have any idea why this may be happening? Is there a different format I should be using or is it simply a PowerPoint problem?

I don't know what "Optimize Stills" means. When I say I'm very new at video editing, I mean brand new. I was able to put together a 45 second news-clip-style video of our latest staff function but this is pushing eight minutes and is an integral part of our organization's upcoming forums next Tuesday.
Do you think I should be contacting Microsoft about what the issue might be with PowerPoint, instead of worrying about my file?
The weird thing is, when I just Export-Movie, it comes out fine in Windows Media Player but wonky in PP. When I Export-Adobe Encode-WMV, it won't even open on my computer or play in Windows Media Player. Any suggestions on compressing the file further without any problems?

  • Memory errors on 2011 mac pro

I am getting a lot of "memory" errors lately. I thought it was mostly limited to my 2004 Microsoft office suite – mostly Entourage – (yeah, I know, but my company hates to spend money on anything let alone upgrades to the current decade) running on my brand new Mac Pro with a ton of memory.
Today, though, I got a "not enough memory/cannot save" error in my newly upgraded FlexiPro 8.5 software. This error message is new.
Add it to the Entourage and Powerpoint problems, the fact that Adobe CS2 has its own issues, and it becomes an incredibly frustrating way to work.
Yesterday, I ran Disk Utility and it told me to startup from the installation disk and then repair. I repaired my hard drive with Disk Utility, started up from the system installation disk. It claimed to have repaired the problem it was having then. But... I am not getting any relief from the seemingly random error messages today.

Well, 3GB of memory is almost enough to boot and run a program, but other than that, anemia and starvation.

As for errors,  you are talking about parity or other errors, System Profile: Memory, then run AHT and Rember.
Depending on what you do and run,  even 6-8GB RAM should be absolutely minimum, with 16-32GB, and for CS 5.x 24GB.
Older applications one problem is they have to emulate PowerPC code via Rosetta which eats up 2GB or more of overhead.  Throw in Safari which is a memory hog and some others.
Take a look at /var/vm and the pageouts and swap files from Activity Monitor, though having zero pageouts or low is not a pure indication of having 'enough' for performance.

  • Font Preview in Font Book not Displaying Correctly

I just got my new mac and I noticed that font book previews appear strange for some of my fonts. Here's a picture demonstrating what I mean.
I've already made an attempt to clear font caches, deleting the fontbook pl file, validating fonts (nothing wrong so far), and while it seems to have fixed the preview display of a large majority of my fonts, I've yet to resolve this matter completely. Please help. Thanks.

I've attached 2 screenshots. The first shows the flash stage at its default size - as you can see my font is all distorted and weird looking but when you zoom in (image 2) it's exactly like it should be. What would make it look like this when the stage hasn't been zoomed out or anything, it's just from pressing cmd and enter from flash?
I embedded it by putting it into the fla's library
