Powershot G15 ISO in aperture mode

Hello to everyone,
there is a question that I cannot answer myself about the ISO in Powershot G15. When I work in Aperture mode I can set up the maximum ISO that the camera will use depending on the ambient light available.
The weird thing to me is that the camera selects a high iso when there is enough light available. For instance, information about one of my picture is: ISO 800, f. 2.0, 1/400. How is it possible that shooting to 1/400 the camera selects an ISO of 800??? It sounds stupid to me since you stilll can shoot up to 1/60 without having vibration problems and the camera should always select the lowest ISO to avoid noise.
Can anyone enlight me about this issue?
Thank you!

When the engineers designed the G15 camera parameters, I believe they strived to have the camera attain 14%-18% grey for the best white balance with the fastest shutter speed, and that bumps up the ISO to compensate. It really does not depend so much on the light metering, which would make more sense to me. I'm with Cicopo on this as I stopped using the Auto ISO and setting max ISO ranges for the very reasons that you have stumbled on to, and instead I have learned through trial and error what the best ISO settings would be.
Just curious if you shoot in RAW or JPEG. I had noticed that my G12 is better in the RAW mode about automatic settings, but still not perfect. If you are in JPEG, do you have the I-Contrast set on? If so, that can have an impact on the settings the camera wants to select. Try with the I-Contrast off to see if you get better results. The I-Contrast is not available in RAW, so that could be the difference here.

  • PSE 11 won't open CR2 files from Canon PowerShot G15.

I was interested in PSE 11 so I could use ACR 7.x to open the raw (CR2) files from my new Canon PowerShot G15 camera--but even after updating the files, PSE 11 won't recognize my camera!  It's still not listed in the group of supported cameras on the Adobe website(s).  This camera has been out for a few months (at least!), so it's unbelievable that Adobe still won't support those files.  They only go through the G12, not up to G15.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 and Canon Powershot G15.

I have Photoshop Elements 8 and a Canon Powershot G15.  I need to download Raw from this camera, which appears to be impossible, although it will download from my Nikon D60.  Do I need a plug in to achieve the result with the Powershot; if so what will it cost and how do I get it?  Thanks,
    brucem

    Hi,
The G15 is supported in Camera Raw 7.3 (or later) which, unfortunately, is not compatible with Photoshop Elements 8.
You can either upgrade to Photoshop Elements 11 (or later) or download and install the free Adobe DNG converter. You copy your CR2 to a folder and then give the DNG converter that folder name. The converter will then convert those files to the DNG format. the DNG files can then be used by Photoshop Elements 8.

  • Powershot G15 - How do you fire studio lights from the hotshoe?

    Hello,
I have a Powershot g15 and I can't figue out how to fire my studio lights fro the hotshoe. I had it working a few months ago but a con no longer find the correct series of setting to fire always. Do you know kniw the right combination of settings??
    Thanks,
    Brian

Have you tested the flash, sync-cord, and adapter?
The foot of a flash is actually it's ground pin and it makes contact with the hot-shoe rails on the camera.  If you ground the center pin to the ground, the flash will fire.  So if you were to disconnect the hot shoe adapter from the camera and use a piece of metal to touch the center pin and ground pin (on the hot-shoe adapter... not on the camera) then the flash should fire.  If it does not fire then there's a problem somewhere in that path... either the adapter, sync-cord, or flash are having a connectivity problem.

  • Powershot G15 RAW support in LR 3.6 (Elements 10)

I have Elements 10 and LR 3.6 installed (I also have LR 4.3 but more on that later). I just purchased a Canon Powershot G15 and from what I've been able to determine RAW support for it was included in ACR 7. Am I correct in assuming I cannont use ACR 7 with my two programs?
I'm afraid to install LR 4.3 because of all the reported performance problems. My 3.6 runs like a champ. I'm using a MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and intel i5 processor. So what do you think? Should I take the chance and go ahead and install 4.3 or leave well enough alone. I received 4.3 as a free upgrade so if I don't install it I'm really not out anything.

I have both 3.x and 4.x installed on my Windows 7 computer.  I don’t remember doing anything special, but you can always just install LR 3.x again if you decide to abandon LR 4.x.
Assuming you have LR3 currently configured to open the last-opened catalog each time you start it up, LR4 will find and ask permission to convert a copy of that LR3 catalog to LR4 format but your LR3 catalog will still be useable by LR3.  Anything you do with the LR4-converted copy won’t be reflected in the original LR3 catalog because they are two separate catalogs and LR3 cannot open the LR4 catalog.  When doing the initial conversion, name the new copy of the catalog something that makes sense for being the LR4 version of your LR3 catalog so you won’t be confused when you look at the catalog names in the future.

  • Canon PowerShot G15 IS or Canon PowerShot S110 IS?

I am downgrading and going from two cameras to one.  I currently have  Nikon D5100 and Canon Powershot SX260, but just want one that is small to fit in my purse or bigger bag, but high enough quality to get some great shots of the kids sports and our fun times.  I do enjoy editing so shooting in RAW is a plus.  So far, I have seen the G15 and S110 and reviews have been great on both.  Any advice as to which one would be best?  (video is not a huge concern, just a bonus)
I'm not particularly stuck on only the G15 or S110, just those are the ones I've seen that appear to be quite compact compared to bringing my D5100 everywhere.

    Hey xl,
Thanks for posting this. The Coolpix A looks like a nice compact!

  • Powershot G15 and .dng files

Why can't I import and edit RAW  files directly from my powershop G15, without converting to .dng files?  I am using Lightroom V 3.6.

    That's why.
G15 came out after Adobe quit maintaining Lr3.
Yes, Adobe could keep retrofitting old software with new camera support, but they don't.
Note: if they did, the money to do so would be coming from users who pay to upgrade, and only benefit users who haven't paid to upgrade.

  • Booting Arch-ISO from USB-Stick in UEFI mode fails

    Hi there,
I'm running an Asrock H77M-ITX UEFI mobo. On this system I've already installed Arch on a Samsung 830 SSD (GPT formatted) - but in BIOS legacy mode because I've written the Arch-ISO image with "dd" to an USB-Stick (and UEFI boot mode wasn't even presented at boot).
    Out of curiosity I've re-formatted the stick and copied Arch-ISO following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … B_from_ISO.
Now I could start the ISO in UEFI mode, but it failed to start gummiboot with the "No loader found. Configuration files in \loader\entries\*.conf are needed." error message, concerning a problem with gummiboot.
Following some advice on the forum, I did this:
    - install refind-efi 0.4.7-2
    - copy /usr/lib/refind/refindx64.efi to [USB]/EFI/boot and renaming it to bootx64.efi (i.e. replacing the original bootx64.efi from gummiboot)
    - Create a new file in the same directory ([USB]/EFI/boot/) called refind.conf
    - Add this to it:
    textonly
    scanfor manual
    menuentry Arch {
    loader /arch/boot/x86_64/vmlinuz
    initrd /arch/boot/x86_64/archiso.img
    options "gpt loglevel=7 add_efi_memmap none=UEFI_ARCH_x86_64"
With this I can launch Arch-ISO from the USB-Stick in UEFI mode and I can choose Arch from rEFIND. Then Arch-ISO starts booting but it always stops at the same point with this message:
sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present
sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
ERROR: '/dev/disk/by-label/' device did not show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, log out when you are finished
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
    [rootfs /]#
sdb is the USB-Stick from which I start Arch-ISO. Again - I didn't use dd to write the ISO to the stick.
Maybe this is pretty easy to solve, but I have to admit that I'm somewhat stuck

WonderWoofy wrote:See what the difference is between archiso and archboot maybe?  Seriously, have you made any effort whatsoever?
    Of course. Read:
    The "Main Page" ( https://www.archlinux.org/ ) states:
"You've reached the website for Arch Linux, a lightweight and flexible Linux® distribution that tries to Keep It Simple."
    "Keep It Simple". Yeah!
In line with that, the "The Arch Way" page ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way ) states:
"The following five core principles comprise what is commonly referred to as the Arch Way, or the Arch Philosophy, perhaps best summarized by the acronym KISS for Keep It Simple, Stupid."
The ArchWiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/ ) links to several other pages, such as these:
The "Forum Etiquette" page ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Forum_Etiquette ) states under "Ineffective Discussion":
"Arch is a Do It Yourself community" and "treat others as you would be treated; respect them and their views". I am very much a "do it yourself" person -- that's why I like The Arch Way. I also go by the Golden Rule stated here.
Now, everyone is a newbie at some time. I and other posters here are obviously newbies with respect to ArchLinux. Even experts were newbies at one time. Newbies, by definition, do not necessarily know what they're doing, or where to find information. Hence, Arch's "Beginners' Guide" and such. Hence, posts on this board from newbies asking for help.
As regards initial installation of ArchLinux, and consistent with the above, the FAQ ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FAQ ), under "Q) Arch needs an installer. Maybe a GUI installer", states:
"A) Since installation doesn't occur often (read the rest of this article to know more about what rolling release means), it is not a high priority for developers or users. The Installation Guide and Beginners' Guide have been fully updated to use the command-line method. If you're still interested in using an installer, consider using Archboot."
So the basic installation instructions explicitly state that Archboot is not needed.
The "Installation Guide" ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_Guide ) says nothing about either Archboot or Archiso.
The "Beginners Guide" ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide ) says nothing about either Archboot or Archiso.
The "Archboot" page ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Archboot ) is consistent with the above information, because it states:
"Archboot is a set of scripts to generate bootable media for CD/USB/PXE.
It is designed for installation or rescue operation."
    The "Archiso" page ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Archiso ) states:
"Archiso is a small set of bash scripts that is capable of building fully functional Arch Linux based live CD and USB images. It is a very generic tool, so it could potentially be used to generate anything from rescue systems, install disks, to special interest live CD/DVD/USB systems, and who knows what else."
So the pages describing both Archboot and Archiso clearly state that these tools are oriented towards already-existing installations -- even though it seems that they might be used, in certain circumstances, for initial installations.
I happen to be very new at playing around with installing Linux distros (although I've used Unix/Linux as a regular user for more than 30 years), and am brand new with respect to ArchLinux. I only began playing with it this past Saturday. So I would expect a bit of useful help as opposed to "RTFM!" I will soon get past the need to RTFM for basic tasks, but I have a way to go.
The fact is that for me and a number of other new ArchLinux users, the installation guides simply do not work. C.f. my post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153170 . I've done a lot of googling as well as searching the archives on this board, and others have come up against the same show-stopping installation problems that I have. I and others have posted to several recent threads on this board, trying to get past the problems, so far with no success.
    Now, the.ridikulus.rat had written:
"You guys are using Archboot's kernel options for Archiso. Thats the issue in both the cases."
Given that neither of these sets of scripts were used by me or swordfish, this comment is not useful.
Given the above, can you or anyone else tell us what Archiso or Archboot might do to help us with our installation problems? Also, can you tell us how we, as newbies, ought to have found out how these might help?

  • Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.01 for Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11

    Check Software Update!
    Canon EOS M
    Canon PowerShot S110
    Nikon D600
    Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100
    Canon PowerShot G15
    Canon PowerShot SX50 HS
    Nikon 1 J2
    Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ200
    Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G5
    Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX7
    Sony Alpha NEX-F3
Those of you who have already imported "unsupported" photos into Aperture (i.e. Nikon D600) photos, simply choose Photos->Reprocess Original after installing this update (and restarting Aperture), and the photo will then show up.
Aperture Expert has a little summary too:
    http://www.apertureexpert.com/tips/2012/10/24/digital-camera-raw-compatibility-u pdate-401-for-aperture-3-a.html

I cannot fathom why a RAW update is not compatible with all versions of Aperture 3. This is forced redundancy in my opinion. Not happy...
I understand that this is annoying for you, but it is part of the redesign of MacOS to make it more efficient and not to waste disk space on redundant installations.
The recent raw update - as I see it - is an update to Mac OS X 10.8.x, not to Aperture. Since Mac OS X Lion Apple has started to migrate the raw support directly to the OS, so they do not need to install the raw support as update to many different applications. I have not checked yet - is this update included in Lion as well? I sincerely hope so.
Send feedback to Apple that you need this upgraded raw support also available in Snow Leopard.

  • IN Camera Raw for Aperture the why won't the Canon G16 photos download?

I've had no success in downloading my RAW photos from the new Canon Powershot G16 into my Aperture Project library. Does Apple need to update the RAW compatibility software or is there another way to get my RAW files to work in Aperture?

The list of currently supported cameras is here:
Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
The new Canon Powershot G16 is not yet on the list, but the previous model Canon Powershot G15 is supported in Aperture 3.4 or later. So you have to wait for Apple to release a new raw support version.
While you are waiting, you have several options:
Shoot raw&jpeg and use the jpeg as originals; you can switch this later to use the raw
Or use the software that comes with your camera to develope the raw and import tiff or another lossless format.

  • Accessing raw file taken with Canon Powershot G16 using Elements 11

I own adobe photoshop elements 11, which I have used successfully for the past 18 months or so with my Canon Powershot G15 camera. I recently upgraded to the Canon Powershot G16 but was disappointed to find that elements 11 does not recognise the raw files taken with the G16. I have tried various intenet forum fixes to no avail. I would rather not go to the expense of purchasing  Photoshop Elements 12 to remedy this shortcoming, particularly as Elements 11 more than meets my current photoediting needs. I would be grateful for information on any patches etc that might allow me to access raw files taken with the G16 without have to resort to purchasing Elements 12.

after much consternation I have discovered that the problem is APERTURE.  Despite claiming that the program is compatible with the G16 RAW files it really is NOT.  I had to download Canon's own photoediting and viewing software....and guess what no problem at all editing, viewing any of the files.
I tried them in Lightroom too and guess what...no problem at all!
So although Aperture has been like an old friend it is time to say bye bye and make the big trek over the Lightroom!
    Sad but relieved.

  • G15 - Blown highlights

    Hi,
I'm really pleased with my Powershot G15 - great indoors in low light, great outdoors with blue skies but I have one problem which I need help with. Whenever I take an outdoor shot with an overcast all-white sky, the photo turns out terrible.
The edge between the sky and the forground seems to bleed together and look foggy. On the LCD preview, the sky flashes, which I presume means it is too bright?
Apologies - I'm an amateur and shoot on auto mode. Is this a camera fault, or do I need some help on using manual mode for this type of shot? Anything I can do to simply improve this type of shot? My camera phone seems to handle this scenario ok, so I imagine I should be able to get similar results with my G15?
An example is attached. What can I do to improve the contrast around the tops of the trees? The sky looks really bright, it wasn't at all.
    Thanks for your help!
    Rob

Get out of AUTO & into Program (or Tv or Av) & read your manual to learn about & how to change EXPOSURE COMPENSATION. It's how you correct (on the fly) lighting that fools the metering system.

  • Plugin for Canon PowerShot G 15 camera.

I just bought a Canon PowerShot G15 camera.  Shot over 100 pictures in Raw to test out the camera.  I used the Canon disk to install their software and followed their instructions.  I then downloaded the latest updates from Adobe only to discover that the company has not gotten around to supporting this camera.  I have owned Photoshop since Version 7 days, gone through several SLRs and PowerShot G series cameras and have never experienced this kind of omission.  Can anyone tell me what is going on and when will I be able to get a plugin to convert my Raw files?

    Thanks Mollysnoot!
A thoughtful response.. I already have over three thousand G15 images and DPP is a dinosaur to use. I purchased it four weeks ago and in the past I haven't had to wait this long as an early adopter of new gear. Canon doesn't have a lens profile yet either.   About the last thing a person wants to do is buy the latest technology and then find out it's still in the almost ready phase... It's kinda like buying a new car and then finding out that if you turn on the headlights, the stereo stops working. But as soon as Delco Remy gets off it's A$$, it'll be fixed. Until then, suck it up and don't turn on your lights...
