PowerShot SX40 HS. Tablet?

After looking through the internet for about 4 hours I've come to the forums for your help, I mainly use my camera for event photography and lugging around a laptop just isnt possible in some cases therefore I'm trying to set up my tablet (Archos Cobolt 80) to be able to view my photo's on the go with a on the go usb, however I'm having trouble getting it to work because simply plugging it in doesnt show the camera's photo's and finding firmware that supports the camera and tablet (its an Android OS 0.4 Ice Cream to be exact).
I've tried downloading ZoomBrowser EX but the tablet wouldn't recognise it, I'm at the moment trying to downloading the software and putting it into the tablets root directory to see if that would work in installing the software. Although I'm unsure if this will work however it does say that its compatitable with windows 7 on the tablets spec page.
Any advice would be greatly appriciated.
-Thanks

I have tried both on and off as well as downloading the programs directly however it hasn't picked them up. In regards to the cable it does not fit my tablets usb which is why I've been given an OTG usb cable which doesn't seem to work or let my tablet pick up the camera(will test this with other tablets in the household.)
I have however tried connecting a USB MiniCardReader and put the camera's card in to be told that there was an "Damaged USBdisk
USBdisk damaged. You may have to reformat it."
Upon clicking the error it tells me that "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped." Upon clicking Ok on that the background goes black and returns after a few seconds, what I assume is the system UI restarting.
Back to the USB MiniCardReader upon plugging in the camera's Sandisk it does boot up the blue light on the diskreader.
I'd like to add that this tablet was given to me as my father had gotten a newer tablet so I'am unaware as to the placement of the orginal cable that came with it. I'll give that a try if he can find it.
Edit: Apparently when we orginally got the Tablet it did not come with a USB link just a charger. However I'm going to look into getting a USB adapter for it so I can try the USB cable that came with the camera orginally.

  • Questions re: upgrading to T5i from Powershot SX40

I currently have a Canon Powershot SX40 and have taken thousands of photos with it. While the results are good, I want them better. I have been taking some photography classes and reading articles online to try and get the most out of my current camera. I typically shoot in P mode and not Auto. I have been researching Canon DSLR cameras and think I have settled on the T5i which has good features and in my budget. However, I am torn between these two options: Getting the T5i with the 18-55 STM lens in a kit with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens, or for the same price, getting the T5i with the 18-135 STM lens only (which is close to the range of the lens on the SX40). I shoot a lot of nature and landscape photography, so want to be able to zoom in from a distance. Otherwise, I am shooting family photos at a close range (a few feet at most). I also do a lot of macro photography. I would appreciate some recommendations on the best option for me to start with.
Also, one concern I have is shooting in damp or wet weather. We were just on a Rhine River Cruise, and most days were damp with drizzly rain. I still shot a lot of photos and just did my best to try and keep my camera wiped off and dry. Would the T5i be more sensitive in this kind of weather than my SX40? If I'm on a trip and the weather is wet, I don't want that to keep me from taking photos. What do those of you with the T5i (or similar) do in damp weather?
    Thank you.

Even the 60D and 70D have weather sealing.
I always throw out some cautions about this... weather sealing involves using gaskets and o-rings on all body seams and dials.  The seals do not protect against "pressure" -- the moment a camera is submerged it is subject to "pressure" and the seals _will_ leak.  A weather-sealed camera body would handle light rain, drizzle, snow, etc.  I would probably not expose it to severe weather (e.g. in the hard driving rain of, say, a hurricane... water gets driven through cracks and into amazing spaces where you'd think water leaks wouldn't normally be a problem -- bottom line is that it's protection is "pretty good" but not intended to be comprehensive for all situations.  Use reasonable caution.
Also... just because a body might be weather sealed, doesn't mean the lens is weather sealed.  Some lenses are (most but not all "L" series lenses are sealed and even with those you have to read the docs for each lens... some will indicate that a protective filter is needed on the front such as a clear or UV filter to "complete" the weather seal.
You would not want to open the camera while exposed to weather.  If you need to swap batteries, memory cards, or lenses, get it out of the weather and towel off the body first to remove moisture.
There are many camera rain-jackets and rain-sleeves on the market that can provide good protection.  These usually have elastic to go around the lens or lens hood, cover the body in plastic (or a waterproof fabric) with holes in the back through which you can insert your hands to hold and control the camera.  Some of these are _very_ inexpensive (intended as disposables) and others are quite rugged/durable and intended for multi-use (but more expensive.)
A waterproof housing is, of course, truely "water proof" (even to substantial pressure and depth)... but real water proof housings are fairly expensive and usually cost more than the camera body itself.

You may need to do a custom white balance in those situations. Early morning & late in the day the light is different colored thanks to it being filtered by more of the earth's atmosphere. Those times of day offer a golden tint.

  • Will the T4i help me take better sports photos then the PS SX40 HS??

I currently have a PowerShot SX40 HS and I want to upgrade to be able to take better sports shots and actually freeze the action.  The sports include Baseball / Football and some indoor Basketball.  This is the main reason I want to upgrade (For action shots)!!  I am currently looking at the Canon T4i and a couple IS lenses (18-55 & 55-250) both IS II.  The lenses come with the camera.  Would I be able to freeze the action better with the T4i?   I don't want to spend the money if is not going to do what I want.  Not looking for SI quality shots but just some I can say "Check that out".  Would an STM lens be much better?  I think an STM lens is better for video.  Not really looking to shoot video - mainly stills.  Well Action shots!!  I did play around with all of the features on my SX40 so I am somewhat familiar with ISO / Aperature and F-stop.  Any suggestions on a I dare say to say "Entry Level DSLR" for my needs.  My maz spending is 1k.  Would a 250mm bring it up close if I am sitting in the stands?
Thank you all for your time.
    Briguy

Better, yes.  But better enough to warrant the cost, that I can't answer.
Keep in mind that what you are asking for (freezing action and getting it up close from the stands) is a lot.  Arguably too much.  But that depends on your definition of acceptable.  In order for me to get a shot that I consider great, from the stands, would require a very, very expensive lens.  But if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from being a photographer – the average person doesn’t look at a photo the same way a photographer does.
Lets deal with the easy stuff first: a dSLR is much faster than a point and shoot.  Modern P&S have gotten much faster, some are quite fast, but their autofocus is still slow, and there’s no point in having 10 pics of an out of focus subject.  dSLR can take multiple shots a second, and they can even re-focus in-between shots.  Additionally, the shutter lag – time between pushing the button and the shutter dropping, is quicker (though some P&S have gotten really fast).  All these advantages make dSLRs much better equipped for sports.
Freezing action requires a fast shutter speed.  Easy for just about any camera in good light, but as light fades you’ll start to see the difference between P&S and dSLR.  The sensor in a dSLR is much bigger than most P&S, so it can collect more light, which means it can use a faster shutter speed (in a sense).  But this can only take you so far, to really reap the benefits of a dSLR you need good lenses.  More specifically, you need lenses with a wide aperture to let in a lot of light.  Again, outside in the sun it’s not such an issue, but freezing action of indoor sports is pushing the limits, and it really can’t be done well (subjective) without a good lens and preferably a good camera.  Will a Rebel with a 55-250 kit lens perform better than a P&S with indoor sports?  Yes.  Will it provide acceptable results for you?  I can’t answer that.  I will say that getting a Rebel with the two kit lenses is a big step up and I think you could have a lot of fun, and learn a lot about photography with that setup.
One last comment:  you’re correct, STM is primarily for video.  I would try to find a refurbished version of the previous version of the 55-250 and save a bit of cash.

  • Is there a way to set a preference for image resolution in PSE10?

Once I transfer image files from the camera to the Organizer (PSE10), they are listed in the information panel window as having a resolution of 180.  I use the printer  more than the internet for these files, so I really want the resolution to be 300 or above, and would like to set a preference to that effect.  I know that I can resize them individually, or by a group, but I'd like to get the resolution set properly in the first place rather than adding yet antoher setp in my post processing efforts.  I am assuming that the resolution is set by PSE10 because I can't find anywhere in the camera's (Canon Powershot SX40 HS) user manual that mentions that the camera sets a resolution.  Is there some way that I can adjust the resolution that PSE10 assigns the images when they are imported into the Organizer?  I'm using Windows 7 with 12GB Ram.  Thank you very much.

Thank you very much for the info.  I certainly appreciate it.  I’ve been looking everywhere I could think of for how the resolution gets to be 180, and couldn’t find it.  I wish they’d have something in their manual about that.  Your info helps tremendously.  Thanks again..

  • Slow-motion (high shutter speed) camera to video my golf swing with 240fps

What is the best model to choose?  Would also like a shutter speed of at least 1/2000. I had a Canon SD4000IS that did the trick but was lost (don't ask how!).

    Wali,
Some of our current models have the Slow Motion Movie mode that allows a 320 x 240 resolution video to be shot in super slow motion at 240 fps.  Based on this requirement and the shutter speed requirement, I have put together a list of models that will work for you.

  • What equations, units, etc. are used for radial distortion?

This doesn't appear to be in the documentation. I need to convert a lens profile to a different model for lens distortion used in research software, but after measuring the distortion manually for a few pixels, it isn't clear to me how the radial distortion parameters would be applied to get those measured numbers.

  • I have a power shot sx 40 & need to know : when up magnify a pic how do you save it on your camera ?

I have a power shot 40 & I learned how to zoom in/maginfy a pic but i can't figure out how to save the maginfied image.
    Thanks ~
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Im not sure what you mean but if you mean when you zoom in on a photo in playback mode there is a way to save the zoomed area seperately from the original photo on the camera.
To begin select Trimming on the Playback menu.
Use the Zoom lever to resize the frame and you can press points on the Control Dial to move the frame around also.
You can also press the Disp to change the orientation.
When you are finished press Set and it will ask to Save New Image, select Ok.
Press Menu and when your promtped to Display New Image select Yes or No.
You might want to consider a book written specifically for your SX40. I own the SX50 and bought that book because much of it still applies. It is called A Short Course in Canon Powershot SX40 HS Photography written by Dennis P. Curtin.
The procedure I just told you came from that book which is clearer than how I would have decribed it mysef

  • What is best way to connect new camera to iMac.

I just got a new camera - canon PowerShot sx40 - I want to connect it to my iMac to down video. It does 1080 dpi. My computer was from feb 2010. It has 4 USB and one FireWire 800 port. No thunderbolt. What cables do I need.

The camera shoud have Firewire 400 cable (arrow looking port), all you need is a Firewire 400/800 (boxy looking port) adapter.
This will allow the camera to stream video to the computer and transfer at the fastest speed.
If you only have USB on the camera (may be USB mini port), then it's really for transfering, your Mac only has USB 2 ports, so find out which ones are the USB 2 (as some are USB 1 which is slower)
Newer devices may have USB 3, but it's backwards compatible with USB 2 and 1, just slower.

  • Why are sections of my video exporting as a bright red screen?

I am using adobe elements for the first time on my macbook pro.
I have been editing a .mov file which was recorded on my canon powershot sx40.
The editing went very smoothly and everything played fine whilst editing, no rendering indications, etc as it was a very simple edit.
However, when I exported the movie, both to a quicktime movie, and to a dvd, sections of my video dissappeared and were replaced by a bright red screen.
I have no idea why this is happening or how to rectify it. Has anyone experienced this before? Any suggestions?

    lucydawson84
What you are seeing in Edit Menu/Project Settings/General is perfectly normal. So is the what you are seeing for Edit menu/Project Settings/Capture and Video Render there. So, I am not sure where Hunt is coming from with the HDV comment.
I have looked at a sample of video from your brand/model camera via a QuickTime export and do not see the problem that you describe. The sample video is
    1280 x 720
    29.97 frames per second
AVCHD video compression with a .mp4 file extension.
I used the Premiere Elements 11 project preset of NTSC AVCHD AVCHD LITE 720p30 which appears to be what you or the program selected as well.
Consider creating a new project with the same NTSC AVCHD AVCHD LITE 720p30 project preset and importing only a video clip. Do nothing to the video clip and export it to a H.264.mov file saved to the hard drive. Determine if the red areas appear in this video.
What did you do with the Bitrate Settings? Leave without check mark or with check mark and filled in bitrate in kbps (kilobits per second)?
We will be watching for your follow up. I will look at the DVD-VIDEO side of this later.
    Thanks.

  • I am looking for a field guide to my new sx40 hs powershot.

Amazon has a powershot field guide, but only lists G, S, TX, A, or SD-series cameras as included in the guide.   I am not familiar with series similarities. How much good will I get from this guide do you suppose?  Thanks.

I have a Lenovo desktop with win8 and 16GB memory. I have an upgraded graphics card with 2GB memory. I am using CS6. My free drive space is in the 300GB range. I keep all data off line on a 1TB Buffalo drive. I am producing a 52 page color magazine that is filled with graphics and ads (40%). I rarely import graphics files and normally always link them. As I am moving around my file sometimes processing is slow. I have turned off the pre-flight and only use it when I am ready to go to the printer. That helps. I wopuld like to get back to sub-second response time and thought a better performing graphics card would help.

  • How do I install itunes on a surface pro 2 tablet?

My ipad won't update through the ipad so I need to do it through my computer but all I have is a surface pro 2 windows tablet and I cant install iTunes on it. Is there anyway to download it for my computer or other ways of updating ipads if it wont work on the ipad??

iTunes should install on a Surface Pro 2 just like any other PC running Windows 8.1.  If you go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/ and click the Download iTunes button the next page should give you access to the appropriate installer.  Note, though, that the relatively limited storage, especially on the lower spec models, may limit the size of library you can have without using external storage.  iTunes itself requires 400Mb of free disc space to be installed.
iTunes does not run on the original Surface and the Surface 2 that run Windows RT.  The new Surface 3 runs full Windows 8.1 and should support iTunes just like the Pro 2 and Pro 3.
