PowerUsers Advise Requested

I am not very computer saavy as I do not work daily on computers at a company and keep up to date with all of the new tips & tricks. I would like to use my computer more and paper less now that I have the mobility of a PowerBook G4. I just received it 2 days ago so it's very new to me.
Is there a good training session that will help me get the most out of the current OS and allow me to learn all of the features that I want to use quickly and efficiently? I know I have spotlight and dashboard and iLife etc ... but I'd like to become a PowerUser and not waste endless hours searching the web for advise which can be mis-leading at times. I'd love a recommendation for a trusted publisher that has info which is easy to learn quickly and then implement for high level of production of such software as Tiger, iLife 06, Keynote, Pages etc ... I would also like to know if there is any way I could take an online course with an instructor that I can ask questions to if I have them. That would be my first choice. I am nowhere near an Apple Store. Do they video their classes and sell them to those of us that cannot attend.
I've had a mac for a while but with all the upgrading I just can't keep on top of the learniing curve. This is my main reason for sticking with PPC! I just can't do it anymore spending all that money on hardware and then waiting for the drivers etc ... to become available to use it etc ... It just was a few years of tail chasing and learning. Now that I've used PPC for a while I have learned to quit upgrading and just take the time to learn and then enjoy using what I have today! phew!
I use a lot of checklists in my job as a Housewife. Is there an ideal program that I could use for maintaining my paper lists digitally? They are most all repeatable and I don't care for the To-Do in iCal. It's not big enough. Would learning stickies be an option for long and varied To-Dos? Like for example, I could type in my paper Thanksgiving Planner which I have been using for years! Then when I go to do Thanksgiving rather than digging out that notebook I can just pull it up on my new PowerBook and check items off as they're completed. My grown children look forward to my doing things a certain way but it's getting harder and harder for my brain to remember every detail from year to year. One would think there would be a nice way to store all of this on a computer and pull it up to use it as needed? Any advise on that type of software or anything would be wonderful! Surely some of you working people need this sort of application?
I have all the holidays, what people want for gifts so I can remember come a holiday, sizes, birthdays so I can send cards out etc ... I'd like to use iLife more and more and send out those iCards or learn to make them myself as the Hallmarks are getting expensive!
So, even though I am not officially employed I would love to know how I can digitze my life and still get things done. I have spent the past 2 days doing research but want to get this stuff entered somewhere quickly and get back to work. So, any advise would be very much appreciated! Thanks! I'd like to enter Thanksgiving now and then enter each new holiday as it occurs. This way in one year my PowerBook will be updated and I can throw my old paper notebooks in the trash!

Added Thought: I also want to learn to take beautiful food photos so I can publish a nice homemade cookbook for my kids. So any advise on a tried and true place to learn that would be nice too. My camera is a Nikon D70 and my lens is a 70-200 VR f/2.8 if that bit of info helps? Right now I am playing with Nikon Capture nx to make my NEF files work in iLife as jpegs. I love Aperture but not sure I want to get a Pro App for just some food photos and ocassional family/travel snappers.
It's fun to play iTunes in each room as I clean too! That's my favorite part of this tiny portable machine!
If you don't have an answer could you at least share where you learned computers and whether or not you were self taught or had corporate training?

Absolutely, although I am not sure we are ready for a paperless world just yet. I tend not to use organising software but it must be available -- I would suggest further searches on both Google and on Versiontracker. I think that learning about the sources of information is as useful as the answers themselves sometimes.

Advise Requested - Building a Home Server using Solaris 10

I'm currently a Wintel sysadmin, and I'm relatively new to Unix. I know the basics, and I have been reading up on it. I'll be taking a the 200 level Sun class in August or September. I'll be working with Solaris on an increased basis at work very soon. Since I've been thinking of building a home server for some time I thought it would be a good opportunity (and challenge) to teach myself Solaris by building a server with Solaris 10 for Intel processors.
I would like to setup a server with a RAID mirror. It's mostly going to be a Samba file server, Apache web server, and backup server for all of my home Windows Vista PCs. I'll likely put in two 1 terabite HDDs in it. I might also use it as a VPN server for my home network eventually as a I learn more.
Does anyone have suggestions they could give me on hardware? I prefer to build an ATX compliant clone.

Change your SSH port to something other than 22! Make sure your ssh keys use passphrases. You can setup keychain (ssh-agent) on the server and clients to keep keys in memory if you desire without constantly retyping (and for automated backups).

Use of serial# as Primary Key. (Experience DBA Advise Requested)

Sorry if question is out of the scoop of forum.
In my newly joined environment my seniors always use serial# as PK in every table every time & never use candidate key as PK. Doing so always left the candidate key as un-index, non-unique & null.
It produces many drawbacks I don’t have to point out all drawbacks as every experienced DBA knows that. I want the experienced DBA of this form to tell me the ways (any documents, generals) to convince my seniors to stop doing this.

It is not obvious to me that the original poster is indicating that every table contains a primary key column with the same literal name, SERIAL#. If that is really what we're talking about, I'm in agreement with Dan.
My reading of the original post, though, is that the organization is using synthetic keys, presumably generated by sequences, rather than the poster's preference of using natural keys. There is nothing wrong with this approach in general, though there are plenty of very competent folks that prefer to use natural keys where possible. There's plenty written on the pros and cons of natural vs. synthetic keys-- whichever camp you're in, there are plenty of experts you can quote in support of your choice.
If you're using synthetic keys, though, that's no excuse for not creating appropriate unique, check, and NOT NULL constraints on the natural keys, which it sounds like may be one of your objections.

Every body. Almost six months back I purchased Nokia 701. That time I feel I made a mistake by purchasing 701 instead of 808 pure view as I am a bit camera centric. Now even though 701 takes reasonably good photos and video under most conditions, on some occasions like recording performance of my daughter in school anniversary from a considerable distance, it's performance falls short of my expectations. Can anybody pl help me between choosing digital camera by sheeling out some Rs 6 to 7 thousand( Indian Rupees) or purchasing 808. Total cost of both items i.e digital camera and 701 already purchased is almost equal to Nokia 808(Rs 26,000).

Hello experts. I have an image file with 16 small jpg's (from
19k to 30k in heft). In the banner of my site, I would like to have
each of the photos appear one at a time, fade slowly in, then out,
then be replaced by the next photo in similar fashion. This is easy
enough, I know. In the simplest fashion, I could create a single
movie with, say, 500 frames, and just have the movie play front to
back, with tweens fading the pictures in and out, accordingly.
But, that movie would take time to load; and it seems kind of
pedestrian. I am looking for a different and more sophisticated
means of selecting the pictures randomly with actionscript, or
loading them externally.
Given that information, what would you do?:
Create 16 swf files with an alpha fade, in-and-out, and load
each from actionscript, individually and sequencially?
Create one swf that randomly selects a random jpg file and
place it behing an alpha fading mask?
Create a movie clip with a different jpg placed in each
frame, and have a frame randomly selected and have a alpha graphic
fade in and out above the selected frame?
Any other different idea?

I'd say it depends on how much time you have to do this. If
you need a quick turn around, I'd do it the "predestrian" way. If
you're worried about loading time, use the Bandwidth Profiler to
see how much you need to preload, and stream the rest.
If you have a lot of time, and this is something that say
needs the images to be updated regularly, maybe even dynammically,
then I'd create the external swf files and load the needed ones in
and have the next needed loading so they're ready to go when
needed.

DDE Poke decided to stop working - LabVIEW 8.5

I am using LabVIEW 8.5 to, among other things, communicate via DDE and a Brooks software package called SmartDDE with 6 Brooks 5850S mass-flow controllers. I have been able to get this communications link working, and incorporated it into my main control program. However, using the Advise function slowed down my loop too much, so I decided to set up a shared variable I/O server (using DSC). When I did this, DDE pokes started returning the following error: "Code: 14012 - DDE Poke: DMLERR_NOTPROCESSED". Even my base communications VI can no longer poke. Advise/request commands are still working, and SmartDDE appears to be functioning normally. Can anyone help?

Hi Matt,
What I've found is that you may see error -14012 if the spreadsheet that you want to write to is not open. As always, you must launch Microsoft Excel prior to using DDE. You may use DDE to open a spreadsheet, but a spreadsheet must be open before you may use the DDE Poke.vi to write data to it.
I'd also recommend checking this Developer Zone on DDE with Windows. Hope this helps!

But I want to display the details using the JAVA code itself. I don't want
to use the printproperty code from JSP.
How can I extract the content from the Content object below ?

Hi Chuck
What you have here is an array of Content objects, you can call all the
methods available through jsp tags using java on the Content object
To retrieve a property you can either use
java.lang.Ojbect myProperty = myContent[0].getProperty (which returns a
property Ojbect)
or
String myProperty = myContent[0].getPropertyAsString(propertyName, null)
(where propertyName is the string value of the property name, you can either
pass in null or a default value but it finally returns a string)

I think in CS5, it was called "Live-Trace." Whatever it's called, it should become available on the options panel (the context-sensitive control panel at the top) when you select a trace-eligible raster image on your artboard.

Connected everything on my new (previous gen...not the new tower, mind you) TC, but can't get beyond flashing yellow. Had to reconnect my old router to send out the "HELP!" request. Can anyone advise, please?

If you pulled out an existing router.. then you have a modem.. what modem is that? Explicit details help loads.. and loads.. and even more loads.. we cannot guess solutions without knowing the setup.
But you can simply configure the TC in bridge mode.. do it directly connected to the TC with ethernet wire.. LAN TC to computer and configure it in bridge.
Then setup wireless any way you want..
You can turn it off and still use the wireless on the old router.
You can setup a new wireless network.. and connect to that.
Or you can setup roaming network, ie use the same wireless name and same security settings and password as the existing router.. assuming it also has wireless.
Do nothing at all and it will still work..

What you should do is reboot while holding down the command-r keys into the Lion Recovery Disk Select Disk Utility and run Repair Disk.

How were asked to verify it ? If you received an email with a 'verify now' link in it then it's likely to be a phishing attempt to try and get your account id and password and your card details - if that is the case then you could forward the email to Apple : [email protected] (and if you clicked on the link and entered your id and password then you should change your password e.g. via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes)

I know S. Africa is very restricted in what content may be available, even if it is free elsewhere. Free doesn't mean it is licensed for use in a country.
If you have been trying to use the store in another country to download items you cannot. You can only use a store in your country of residence.
