PowrBook won't read CDs / DVD's - help! (please).

Hi there
I recently updated my computer to Tiger and everything was grand. As of today, the PowerBook will not read CD's and not read DVD's. Dashboard Confessional was in the drive when it kicked out and it didn't work again - I'm blaming him....
Can anyone give me any suggestions - what can i do to get the Mac to read the CD's / DVD's? Do I need a firmware update (if so, where do I get that from, there are hundreds) - or do I need to take the battery out and put it in again as someone has suggested?
Please help
Many Thanks
Martin and Shannon

    Very strange one.
    12" 1Ghz, 1.25gb RAM - Combo drive - 10.5.4; Great condition.
No CDs mount, Audio, CDR all dyes. No mounto at all.
DVDs mount and play fine, shop bought films data on DVD-/+R, all OK
The above is true for the internal Matshita combo drive and for two other external Lacie d2s
One Firewire and one USB both exhibit the same behaviour.
Finder Preferences are ticked to mount both DVD and CD.
Please solve this one, I am going slightly mad. It doesn't make sense to my mind
    Cheers all!

My MacBook keeps ejecting all my cds/ dvds.  Help!

It sounds like the superdrive is bad. The only other thing you can do is try to put it back in again. Some times the 3rd time works. None the less it will need to be replaced.

  • Imac won't read Cds

5-yr. old iMac: suddenly won't read CDs. It spits them out after 10-20 seconds with no error message.

    Thanks everybody
I too have suddenly developed this failure to burn. Worked well last week, now doesn't even get to the multiplexing stage, just ejects the blank disk. Ejects original Leopard disk, won't write to CD with Toast 8. Couldn't even check the hardware diagnostic as it just spits the disk out.
Tried Unix single usere mode Command S to type in fsck -y after the prompt localhost# (p840 - The Missing Manual series Leopard) but never got to this prompt. Upgraded to lastest iMovie and iDVD
Tried your FINDER- PREFERENCES - TICKED THEM BUT THEY DON'T SHOW UP IN THE SIDEBAR. . Starting to look ominous. Here I am in the middle of the South Pacific with no Mac repair shop within 3000 km.
OR any other suggestions - may be "life saving" or this iMac is going on a long flight soon or could you send your father-in law.

My ipod does not recognize touch all of a sudden. It is on, but I cannot use it because it won't recognize my touch! Help please!

-You stated: " It is on, but I cannot use it "
Does this mean that the iPod works fine but when you connect the iPod to your computer iTunes does not see - your iPod?
    - Have you tried:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    - If you really have OSX 10.6.x (not 10.5.8 as stated) try:
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: iOS device not recognized in iTunes after restart
    - Have you tried another cable and USB port?
    - If the iPod is not working then there are other things to try.

EXFAT formatted USB stick - sharing permissions wrong - Read Only - Cannot Reformat - Help please!
    Hi.
Having various problems with a USB stick that is formatted in EX-FAT.
It was working fine for a long period.
Yesterday I lent it to a friend to put some things on it.
Now when I try and work on it, I get messages like this.
Mac OS X can’t repair the disk “Disk Name"
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can.
It will also randomly eject the drive.
I have tried to reformat it multiple times, in mac and windows.
[I have never used it in windows previous to this occasion of needing to reformat].
In windows, it crashes the disk when I attempt to format with disk manager [I attempted this due to advice in an internet article].
In Mac , I cannot even try to reformat it, because for some reason the permissions on the USB stick have been set to "read only" and I cannot find any way to change them to read-write, or full permissions, or whatever is appropriate.
I have tried "erase" disk in disk utility. I know how to do a full reformat, but it simply will not allow me to do so.
All the options are greyed out.
Does anybody have any information or links they can point me to?
    I've been searching around.
Thanks very much in advance for any advice received.

  • DVD/CD Drive Problem: Works with DVDs, but won't Read CDs

As the title states, my laptop's CD drive will not read CDs (it is a satellite A205 by the way).  The yellow light lights up, it makes noises as if it is trying to read the CD, but just doesn't do it.  It won't show up as a CD being there when I look it up on "computer".  On the other hand, when I put a DVD in, it works no problem.  Anyone have any idea of what I could do?  I've tried uninstalling the driver on device manager and restarting the computer, thus allowing it to reinstall it, and it didn't help.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Try cleaning out the drive with compressed air and/or a lens cleaning disk.  This often times helps.
Next try booting to a Linux Live CD or some other Self Booting CD like Memtest.  If it doesn't then you know for sure that the drive itself is defective as you are taking Windows out of the equation.  If it does, then you know it's a Windows problem which will more than likely require restoring the system to it's factory out of box state using the Recovery DIsks to fix.
If the drive works with a Live CD then try going into device manager, uninstall the DVD drive, then reboot the system to have Windows automatically re-install it.  This sometimes helps as well.

  • A135-S4527 - DVD Drive won't read CDs but works with DVDs

My Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 is running Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1. It has a MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device DVD/CD-ROM drive (from System Information). It will not read CDs in the drive anymore. It doesn't give an error or anything. It just acts like nothing is in the drive. However, it does still read DVDs. Anyone have a fix for this?
    Thanks,

You can find drives for your A25-S207 at http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com
Many users have reported difficulties with generic replacement drives purchased on eBay.  These drives often lack the proper firmware required to operate in Toshiba notebooks.  I'd suggest buying an exact replacement from a vendor that handles Toshiba parts.

  • IMac not reading CDs/DVDs

I'm on an older (late 2009) iMac, just installed Maverick a few days ago, but the problem preceeds this.  Basically, my computer will not read CDs or DVDs.  Any disc I put into the computer, I hear the whirring noise as if it's reading the disc, but it immediately winds down.  It will repeat trying to read the disc 2 or 3 more times, then just spit the disc out.
I tried spraying some compressed air into the slot, and it still won't read most CDs or DVDs, but now when I insert an MP3 CD that my boss had burned for me, the window pops up for when you insert a blank CD, so the drive is reading blank (or previously burned CDs AS blank), but not DVDs or normal CDs (for example, it spit out both a video game installation disc and a movie DVD).
I made sure that if i go to Finder > Preferences > General that "CDs, DVDs and iPods" is checked, and everything looks normal in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

  • Combo drive won't read CDs or CD-Rs or CD-RWs

my combo drive used to read CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
now it can't read any media but DVDs.
    why is this so?
please help. i have tried all brands of the CD medias but still it won't work. the drive keeps on spitting out the CDs.
    thanks.

    Hi.
I had the same problem with a Combo drive in a PowerBook G4 12 inch model.
It ended up being repaired under warranty.
You could try several things to troubleshoot it:
    1. Zap PRAM
    2. Reinstall system software
    3. Check the drive using a utility application
    4. Check your System Prefs under CDs and DVDs.
If these or other techniques do not solve the problem, then it is most likely a hardware issue, and your drive will need fixing. The Combo Driive in my "Little AL" went bad after nearly 3 years of use, but just prior to warranty expiration.

  • Drive won't read any dvd .. ejects it automatically after spinin some time

My MBP is just some 2 months old and suddenly it has stopped recongnizing/reading the dvds, they dont even show up on the desktop, dont even read a blank dvd. it spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out by itself. it is doing this for all the dvds ( a great number of different dvds ) i have tried in it.
The strange thing is it reads the CD , the only problem is with the DVDs.

--- part of the description ---
    Q) The drive keeps ejecting CDs and DVDs after installation?
    A) The screws which holds the drive chassis down are apparently too long for the drive. I suggest loosen them or screw the left drive rail in with a single screw in the front, removed the CD guide completely and screwed it all back together
The back screws should be loosened and / or left out completely if the problem persists.
    --- end part ---
So I decided to open my MBP and used the guides form ww.ifixit.com and loosened the screws as described above, closed my MBP.
The problem is now gone !

  • Drive won't read any dvd ejects it automatically

You can try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of canned air. It's likely though that your drive has failed, it' not all that uncommon. It that is the case you can either replace it or have it replaced but it's far cheaper just to buy a usb external drive....just not Apples because it won't work with macs with a built in drive working or not. .

  • Satellite M30X: drive won't read data DVD-R's but plays DVD-R movies and CD's

    I have a Toshiba M30X with DVD/CDRW combi drive.
I have accumulated 12gb of digital photo's that I wanted to clear but did not fancy the number of CD's that entailed so I purchased a LITEON EZ-DUB external DVD rewriter and made 3 DVD-R's full of JPEG's.
However, when I put these DVD's in the Toshiba combi drive, it clicks away for a moment or two but when I click on the combi drive in My Computer, the folder is empty and it says there's 0 bytes.
CD's still work, both audio and data, DVD movies play just fine, DVD-R's made on my Pioneer DVD recorder (for TV - looks like a video/nothing to do with PC) play fine, but it will not recognise DVD-R's with data (JPEG's or MP3's) on them.
It makes no difference which software was used (both Nero 6.6 and LITEON EZDUB) and it doesn't matter whether the discs are finalised, single session, multi session or what - it won't play any of them.
These discs however work perfectly in my 7 year old desktop with a 4 year old Sony DVD/CDRW combi.
    I'm stumped.
I don't particularly want to reinstall windows in case it doesn't recognise the Recovery DVD and I seem to remember Microsoft One Note having to be activated by telephone with a code that is different each time you ask it to generate one.
It's a bit of a pain as I wanted to carry my photo's with me in my laptop bag.
I don't want to be carting around an external DVD writer just to read the DVD's.
    I've updated the firmware for SD-R 2512.
It had no effect other than to freeze on an all black screen during restart - I had to hold down the power switch after 15 minutes in that condition.
The laptop is 1 year and 26 days old if that counts for anything.
Anyone have any ideas? Or do I just put up with it.

    Hi
Well, I can only make some suggestions.
You are able to place many MP3 and Jpeg files on the DVD.
Maybe this is a reason why the explorer cannot handle the DVD.
Try to burn the DVD with JEPG picture but don't make the DVD full with these files.
You should let a free space on the medium. Maybe it helps.
But it's very strange for me and this is only a suggestion. I have never tired it and don't know if it helps.
I had a similar issue on my notebook but I have solved it by using a compatible medium. Some drives prefer different mediums for different kind of files.

this is the information about my drive. I never installed the infamous 2.1 superdrive update, so i dont know if this issue is related. My driver stills reads cds, so it isnt totally dead. Any help would be sooooo much appreciated.
"Media: No" seems like the most likely culprit, what can i do to fix that? My brother has the exact same issue with his identical model of MBP (2.33ghz C2D).

Thanks. Of course I meant an erase and install.
I could understand it being the battery if no discs worked at all, but why would the drive work with the apple discs and no others? Is there a way of testing the battery without opening up the case and replacing it?
Testing the pram battery? Yes, make sure your PowerBook is set to the correct date and time. Unplug the PowerBook from the mains and remove your main battery. Wait a couple of minutes then put everything back to normal and start it. Make sure you also have turned off in the date and time setup the ability to use a network time server.
If your PowerBook still has the correct date and time your pram battery is working.
Why only certain disks? As I mentioned in my previous posting if the lens is dirty this could be the problem. For example on PowerBook I just worked on it was not reading disks until I happened to put in one particular one that it read. That told me the problem was intermittent and that the drive was working to a degree. Since this laptop was quite dirty/dusty I figured it could be a dirty lens since it is fairly easy for dirt to work it's way into the drive.
Took the quick and easy way out, however if it starts to act up again I may have to pull apart the drive I use a high quality photo lens cleaning brush to give it wipe but do not use any pressure as you can damage the wiring going into the lens and of course do not do this with the hardware powered! In a worse case scenario I use a dab on Kodak lens cleaning solution on a wadded piece of lens tissue but again I don't recommend this approach unless you're really really really gentle.
There are also cleaning CD's and the Allsop one isn't bad as it has a small row of brushes attached to it that wipe the lens when it passes by, my fear is causing damage if it knocks the lens and some VRDS drives this will not work with.
