Powweb vs. ???

Hello. We have multiple business websites (5 in total), created in both iWeb and Dreamweaver, currently hosted through Powweb. The unlimited transfer and storage is nice, but the tech support and downtime is becoming troubling. Speed of the websites are also not stellar. Additionally since our initial 2 year contract period is up, they are going to jack up the price of all of our hosting, so we're not wanting to renew with them. We have 5 different domains for 5 different businesses. All have simple pop email accounts. Some have video and some do not. Some we use FTP pretty heavy on, and some we don't. What recommendations does everyone have, especially business users? Before we go blindly and sign up to move all of our domains and hosting to Host Excellence, GoDaddy, 1to1, Yahoo, etc. we would really value what others are experiencing.

I register all my domains with HE and they auto-renew them for me.
The advantage of Host Excellence is that you can have all your different websites viewable in one window of your FTP application or WebShell3 and you do NOT need to have a separate index.html file outside of the web folder. The domain name is directed to the index file inside the folder.
You should have no problem uploading an iWeb built site as long as you use a good FTP application.
I use Web Site Maestro to optimize and upload in one pass. I also use Yummy FTP for occasional uploads, trouble shooting and viewing all my files on the server. You can do this from Webshell3 but Yummy makes it easier and faster for me to reorganize and delete redundant files as I have a lot of sites.
Cédric, who built the iWeb FAQ site, switched to HE and I haven't heard any complaints from him!

My iWeb site hosted on PowWeb not showing up with old URL - CNAME issue?

Since Apple migrated my .mac account to MobileMe, the site I was updating and hosting on PowWeb shows only the old uncorrected site. When I publish the URL I get a weird MobileMe URL which doesn't work well as people are used to the original URL. Very confusing!
I've called PowWeb and they seem to understand the issue, but still not working. Although they did say it might take some time to take effect.
How do I get the site to to use the original URL rather than the Mobile Me URL?
What is the appropriate CNAME for MobileMe, if that's the problem?

The PowWeb Tech suggested I need more than web.me.com, like IP addresses, a record names.
Doing it that way and doing it via URL forwarding are mutually exclusive. It's up to you to decide. It's much easier to just fix the URL forwarding which is currently botched than to start messing with IP's, CNAMEs and A Records.
So I need to go into PowWeb and change the URL forwarding to: http://web.me.com/markh47/Garfield_LAX/Join.html ?

Ask them how to change your URL forwarding. Normally you just type your corrected web.me.com url into a form on line.

My Website Disappeared!? DW CS4 & Powweb

I designed a new site using Dreamweaver CS4. My web host, powweb, helped me with the configurations under Site|Management over the phone, and it showed up great on the internet!
I then realized I misspelled a word in the index.html homepage.
I edited it and pressed File|Save and then Site|Put.
A pop-up asked me if I want to also transfer Dependant Files. I clicked "Yes", and then my laptop died. When I plugged it in, I realized my whole website had disappeared and left just a dark blue page.
I called both support centers, and Adobe wants $39 for info, and powweb says everything looks fine in their system.
I am a newbie with all of this, so please be thurough in your advice, if you can help.
Can anyone help me fix this?

The good news is that your website is alive and well. It has not disappeared.
It seems that you have not defined a site in Dreamweaver so all your links in your webpage point to your local hard drive

The mystery of the double headers : one overtakes the other and i dont have two headers in my code

This is a total mystery to me and I have tried to resolve the issue for ages and I don't undestand what is going on!
When I look at my website www.genevievegilbert.com, the top of the browser window from my index page shows me the title 'ARTISTE DES NOUVEAUX...'etc.
When you look at the source code from the browser, the page shows ONE title, which is 'ARTISTE DES NOUVEAU...'etc
When I download that original file from the server itself (index.htm) and open the page in Dreamweaver, it shows me a normal header with the title that I want there, named above.
On my website I have a few links such as 'News'. When you clic on 'News', the top of the browser window from the 'news' page shows me the title

Now, this is the title of my corporate website, which I DONT WANT to appear in my creative practice website.
I have no idea why is is part of the title of the other pages in my artist's site. The reason it is a mystery that this title appears there is that when I download to my desktop the actual page (news.htm), IT DOES NOT SHOW TWO TITLES in its header, just one! I open the file in Dreamweaver and the code is written normally, with one title in the header, which contains 'ARTISTE DES NOUVEAU...'etc (which is the title i want on all of this site's pages)
How come does the one on my server displays TWO titles in its sources code then? What is going on? This is SO strange.
The first of the two titles in the header TAKES OVER the second one and it is this one that display when anyone visits the site.
I tested it on explorer, Opera, Safari and Firefox: all the same.
I have created this site with templates and I gave up on using the template system when updating my pages as I don't quite fully understand the power of this system. Would that possibly have to do with my problem? How can I solve that problem?
I am applying for grants and I can't have my creative website talking about me wanting to do business! HELP!

I want my visitors to be able to see the full directory they are in, in the address bar like, ie; http://microsoft.com/whatever/faq.html
(for example)
As it is currently, they see http://microsoft.com (for example) no matter where they go on my site, it never changes. I can type out http://microsoft.com/whatever/ in the adress bar and it will then display that page and show http://microsoft.com/whatever/ at the top, but once i click on anything to go to another page on my site, it doesn't change to show the new directory , I want it to change as people move thru my site. Seems almost like a URL cloaking feature is turned on, like the ones offered on other domain hosts.
IS this even the right section of the forumn to post this message? Figured it must be "domain name" related.
is this some feature not offered by powweb?
Or is there some simple button to hit in the OPS console?
(btw- i only have one domain name. And my site is all hosted on powweb)

having the address not change is most often due to frames ... if you want it to change just get rid of the frames and you should be fine.

Yes, its must be frames that you are using, because my addresses are not 'cloaked' as you described, but rather it shows the current location of each page I go to.

Having serious problems with Google Adsense and iWeb

Ok, I'm totally ignorant when it comes to web work. I can direct friggin' movies but this web stuff, forget it.
However, I am playing around with a video podcast and would like to try and do the website myself. But I can't seem to have any luck setting up Google's adsense on the site. I've followed the steps in the following link...

One thing, since I'm no longer using my .mac account to host (can't use ads on there?) I am hosting the site through powweb. I don't know if that has anything to do with why it's acting like this.

There are several problems. The code is showing, and also the positioning is off.
To exactly position where you want the ad to go, you need to position the text box of the exact same dimensions as the completed ad (or slightly larger to be on the safe side) exactly where you want it on the page.
Then type some text in the box. When you've published, you need to replace the text you've typed with the code. You obviously managed it once with the centre strip of google ads, but the top and bottom ones, it seems you've just pasted the code into the iWeb page. You can't just paste code into an iWeb page, only after publishing.
Another reason for the code showing is that you've not replaced the text properly and missed out some tags, so when the browser comes to render the page, it's treating it like text.

SSL Cert - Auto Discovery

I have two issues ....
1- I have ssl certificate from godaddy that I have installed on the exchange server. and the outlook web app works perfect with it. however, when using the office outlook internally it gives the following cert error, and when i click to view cert it totally
shows a random cert from a hosting company that I dont know why outlook is pulling that cert instead of using the godaddy cert that I bought. the godaddy cert do have the smtp service assigned to it. can anyone helpin this

Exchange do not create DNS record itself, it's your task :-)

Dreamweaver table border visual aids

When using tables in dreamweaver I can't see the dotted
borders to help me see where rows and cells are. I am using
standard mode and have check visual aids for table widths and
borders. Both are turned on. I have searched extensively for a
solution to this and the most information I have found was on
forums where the only advice was to reinstall - which to me doesn't
sound right. Perhaps this is a bug - but it seems as if there
should be a preference to turn on, which I have yet to find.

Phatfusion Slideshow in IE issues

..... I have the Phatfusion Slideshow working...... kinda.
It works as I've tweaked it in FF, Opera and Safari.
IE (7), of course, is another story.
Aside form a margin/padding issue on the "copyright layer, it is the actual Slideshow that I need some assistance with.
I cant for the life of me, figure out why IE wont play the slideshow in the built-in container (large grey box) but will "cross-link" the thumbnails to a new page.
Any and all help would be most gratefully received.

Virtual domains vs alias

Awhile back I was posting quite a bit about mac mail and Windows AD questions. That was in prepartion to move a client from Powweb hosted pop/exchange to they're own Mail server.
I'm converting them this week but there was something I wanted to make sure could happen.
They essentially have 3 domains. Domain1 is the primary. Domain2 and Domain3 are for other purposes but all recieve mail most of which is forwarded.
Most of domain2 are just forwards to accounts on the primary. So that's just adding the [email protected] to the user's account? Does the gui create the alias in postfix automatically?
Domain3 however are not forwards. They are accounts for the owner's family domain. I'm guessing the best thing is to just create a seperate user account for those accounts and keep them seperate?
To allow this to be setup seperately on clients and devices (iphone, android, etc) should i just create a seperate accounts? user1 for [email protected] and user1a [email protected]? If there is a better way to accomplish besides a second user account I'm all for that.
My next question; users that have addresses for domain1 and domain2 listed on their account have the ability to respond with either address? That's using an email client like outlook or thunderbird? This isn't really a necessity as domain2 email addresses are just forwards in powweb to domain1 addresses. I was curious.

If you have the email service turned on, creating a user automatically creates an email account under the domain that was setup for email. Apple does have virtual domains, both web and email. I've only worked with web virtual domains and that was very little. Basically to get two websites running.
I've never worked with the email virtual domain so I'm not sure how it works. Email virtual domains are setup in the server admin app under the advanced tab. My personal email server is Axigen running on Fedora Core which handles multiple domains (not virtual) which is why I have not looked at virtual email domains on Lion Server.
The WGM>Accounts>selected user>info tab is for Open Directory information to my knowledge. Not sure how, or even if, that interacts with the email service.

I can't access FTP anymore after modem update

I recently updated my modem through Comcast. As a result, I can no longer access FTP sites. I am on MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.1. It was working just fine before the update. Firewall is off and there are no proxies. I have “Use Passive FTP Mode” unchecked as well. I am using Transmit but have tried Fetch as well.
Here is the error message that I get:The connection has timed out The server at ftp.powweb.com is taking too long to respond. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Force Movie to Wait Before Playing

I have a large movie (about 24Mb in size) and was wondering if it is possible to force a quicktime movie to wait until 50% of the movie has been downloaded to the viewer's computer before starting to play the movie in order to avoid the movie stalling when it plays. Thanks for your reply, QuickTimeKirk. Yes, I can see the plugin does wait at the start before it deems sufficient data has been downloaded before it starts playing the video. However, in this instance it doesn't prevent the player catching up with the data being cached later on. This means I may have to add instructions to the page to ask the viewer to pause the playing of the video and then wait until 50% of the data has been cached before rewinding to allow the movie to play without stalling.

Is there any way I can add a graphic (e.g. animated .gif?) to indicate in a more obvious way the data being downloaded?

I keep getting a Publish Error

I keep getting a Publish Error: There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider.
So I've been trying for a while now. my ftp is ftp.riverainstruments.com. when i test connectivity it, the test is successfull. I've asked my service provider and they said to change to ftp.powweb.com when i enter the password, then it says the password is incorrect. So i change the password for just in case....nothing still same message.
my service provider support couldnt help me with the issue.
So now I ask the experts of iWeb, what should I do? :-)

Hey Roddy thanks for the tips. So I tried with the service provider for quite while. We resolved the issue that when I would do the test connection, it now says im ready to publish. (I told the service provider that "t doesn't sound as though your hosting service is very helpful so perhaps you would want to consider changing..."
Needless to say they helped me.
So I went ahead and started publishing and everything works well, with the exception of the Photos template. I am reading in iwebformusicians to see what to do next. Not sure why it does not show up. I actually cleaned the cache, the it does not show up in the menu above, so I entered a hyperlink within the page, to hyperlink to an internal page and selected the photos page, and nothing came up, just a blank page.
Anyway I will address the photos in a separate discussion.

Moving iWeb constructed website to a new web host

As we all know, I hope, MoblieMe will no longer publish web sites constructed with iWeb after June 30 (bummer). I have successfully used the FTC option in iWeb to, relatively seamlessly, publish my site on PowWeb, a commercial site provider. I am hopeful Apple will continue to support iWeb since it is a very user friendly authoring tool even though I will be publishing on PowWeb.
My question is....since Apple is forcing us all to move our sites, many supporting businesses we run, will Apple, if possible, provide a "pointer" service so that is someone uses my old web site address after June 30 (web.me.com/name), a pointer or hyperlink can be seen directing the searcher to my new web site? If this is possible, I would think it would be a nice gesture to Apple's loyal customers who are being forced to do this re-publishing due to Apple's product upgrade. If not a pointer, does anyone have a feasible alternative to suggest?

In your profile you say you use iWeb 08. iWeb 08 has no FTP (not FTC) option.
Anyway, no, Apple does not provide a pointer service. Being a loyal customer or not.
You can duplicate the index.html file in your site as many time as you have webpages, rename them to the pages you have and edit the url redirect to your new website.
And if you have Personal Domain enabled, then neither you, nor Apple, have anything to do.
You delete the CNAME record where you host your domainname and point it to your new website at PowWeb. Your visitor won't notice.
And note that Apple never supported iWeb assuming you expected updates etc.. So continue using iWeb while it lasts.

Send and Receive to internet outside is not working

Hello everyone,
I have just launched my own exchange 2013 infrastructure on server 2012 R2. everything works within the organization. however, send or receive emails to outside on the internet is not working. here is the info and what i have done so far:
My organization domain is .local,
I have created accepted domains as mail.mydomain.com ( mydomain.com) is registered with powweb.
I created send connector and receive connector is already there by default on exchange 2013
send connector is MX record type. I also setup two mx records on my external DNS as follow
mail - IP address of my router ( then port forwarded port 25 to my exchange IP from router)
@ - mail.mydomain.com
* - Mail.mydomain.com
CAN anyone plz help me what am i doing wrong ... i have been working on this till 4 am and its frustrating me
