PP 6.02 loading clips painfully slow

Hello.
I am trying to edit a 10 hour mini-series on Premiere Pro 6.
I have about 20,000 clips in the project.
Up until the recent update it would load everything in about 5 - 10 minutes.
As of now I've been waiting an hour and it's only 30% done.
This started with the recent 6.02 update.
I'm using OS 10.7.4 32gbs of RAM dual Xeon processors with 10 TBs of drive space.
Any suggestions as to how to get this back to normal?
Thanks in advance.
Best,
Dare

lasvideo, thanks but that's not the same problem I am having. Appreciate you chiming in though!
Stephen, thanks for writing. It's a pretty massive project and because clips often criss-cross between segments I have been working everything inside the same edit. I also wanted to see just how hard I could push Premiere (I've been using Premiere for 7 years now). Mind you once everything loads it still does just fine. Edits like a champ. Just was a bit frustrating with the load time.
On #1, I don't have time machine set-up anymore as I ate up all my space.
On #2 this is an interesting suggestion. I'm letting project manager analyze my project right now. I've never used project manager to break off individual edits so this should be interesting. Yes, just me on one machine. I'm shooting and editing at the same time and also doing graphics so I reckon by December. I have two full backups of all footage and edit files and save to a new edit file every couple of days (plus I have auto-save rolling).
And for whatever reason, today when I opened a different project and then went back to the large project, suddenly the problem dissappeared. Weird but there it is. All 20,000 clips now load again under 4 minutes.
Thanks for the assistance.
Best, Dare

• Firefox refuses to load - Thunderbird loads but painfully slow

I uninstalled Firefox, then downloaded the current version (version 9.0.1) which appeared to install OK. However, on clicking the icon it will not load. Strangely, Thunderbird loads, but painfully slowly. Could this be a disc problem?

Did you recently install any new extensions/add-ons from addons.mozilla.org? If so, you can try disable the latest ones you downloaded to see if that makes a difference.
You may also want to try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item:<br>
<br><br>
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

• ITunes 9 painfully slow to load

With all the new graphics & album art that loads & animation that has to load iTunes load so painfully slow & don't let Time Machine run at the same time! Is there anything I can do to either turn off all the additional art work that loads or can I downgrade back to the previous iTUnes?
Or is there something in Utilities maybe I can do?

I'll add my experience to this. It takes sometimes as long as 15 minutes to load my library, during which iTunes is "Not Responding," and churns my hard drive so that my entire system is nearly unusable. My system still has sufficient memory, so it is not paging.
Shutting down in the same experience. I just timed it at 10 minutes, with the same hard drive churn and nearly unresponsive system. The RAM usage goes as high as 1GB of ram, and in Activity Monitor, it is writing for minutes at ~20MB/s. I thought that my library was somehow corrupted, but this seems to be a common experience?
Why didn't Steve Jobs demo this great new feature?

• Logic Express 7.2 painfully slow loading ESX24 and JamPack audio samples

Logic Express 7.2 is painfully slow loading ESX24 and JamPack instrument audio samples. The hard drives very busy as if Logic is searching for the files. Garageband loads the JamPack audio files almost instantly. Don't have this problem with Logic Pro on my G5, only Express on my MacBook Pro.
Have updated to 7.2.1 but no change.
Anybody else experienced this? Any tips appreciated.

Hi Jorge,
You are absolutely right, it's just the first time I load the samples. What's strange is that it's happening with JampPack 4, it took about three minutes to load one of the string intruments, but when I closed that instrument and opened esx the same string intrument was loaded. I don't remeber this taking so long on my G5 though!
Thanks for your help Jorge.

Just upgraded to OS X Lion.  Now Safari behaves erratically.  Some sites load at lightning speeds I have never seen before, others load painfully slow or not at all.  Any ideas here?

I would recommend running Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and Repairing Disk Permissions. Please run this at least 2x. It that doesn't help then post back, there are many other things to try.

one secure website loads painfully slow (7 minutes !). Only this site. How can I streamline firefox to load these pages faster? This started happening only after I switched from McAffee to Norton Security Suite. Other secure sites load just fine.

If you close Firefox, then start Firefox in Safe Mode, does the problem still occur? For instructions on starting in Safe Mode, see Safe Mode.

Upgraded from 10.6.8 to Mavericks last week on my MacBook Pro running the 2.4 GHz i5 and it's painfully slow on start-up- I mean, 5 minutes or more, to be fully functional... Is this normal?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
         Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
         COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
         computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
         screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
         Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

• Painfully slow access to admin console (how can I fix it?)

Hi,
I'm using using Sun Java System Web Server Version 7.0U4 B12/02/2008 02:17 running on CentOS (Redhat EL) release 4.4.
The problem is that using the Admin Console (on port 8989) is painfully slow. It takes minutes for each page to load, but they do usually load.
Any ideas on how to fix that?
There are some other things going on that might be related and helpful to know:
I get certificate errors when I access the Admin Console (e..g, IE complains about a mismatched address). I've tried following the directions to install the certificate in IE7 and FF3, but neither has stopped bothering me about the certificate error.
I have the server behind a firewall which allows all outgoing traffic and select incoming ports to the server. The firewall also maps a public IP address to the server's local IP address (e..g, 10.10.10.8).
If I access the Admin Console locally via the LAN address (https://10.10.10.8:8989) it is no longer slow, but I get booted back to the login screen very frequently (e.g, every minute or two of casual browsing through the console), and I still get the certificate error
We haven't given the server a name, but access it by IP address, and the virtual server configuration in the Admin Console is name "localhost.localdomain"
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! I've tried searching for solutions several times, but haven't succeeded.
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for the thoughts

sounds more like some network issues. are you running your browser on your centos 4.4 as well ? also, did you try to connect using your IP - some thing like https://<ip>:8989 ?
No, we're not running the browser on centos 4.4. We're runing browsers on laptops, connecting both offsite via public IP address and in the office via both the public IP address and the LAN ip address.
Yes, we're using the ip address as you demonstrated. This machine does not have a domain name attached, so we only connect via ip addresses (mapped public or LAN)

I've tried following the directions to install the certificate in IE7 and FF3, but neither has stopped bothering me about the certificate error.it is not a certificate error. web server 7 admin server uses a self signed certificate . this is necessary step. however, IE reports a warning when it sees a self signed certificate. it wants you to know that it does not understand who sent this certificate. you need to create an exception - saying that you know what you are doing then there won't be any certificate error ..Okay, I'll look for how to do that, but so far I've only found instructions for how to install the certificate in the browsers, and unfortunately, that hasn't made a difference.

sounds like some network misconfiguration - outside the scope of this forum.I cannot rule that out, but other servers/websites seem to work fine with this same setup. Although, only this server is using https

if you want to increase this time out, you could do so by manually editing <install-root>/lib/webapps/admingui/WEB-INF/web.xml and change the value for session-timeout to say 600 (for 10 minutes).. . pl . note that this is not a supported way and you could potentially leave others to use your session if you are careless. but, if you know what you are doing .Thanks I did that. It surprises me that the default timeout appears to be 1 minute.

• Ever since updating to latest version of Firefox it has been painfully slow on my Mac running OS 10.5.8.

Ever since updating to latest version of Firefox it has been painfully slow on my Mac running OS 10.5.8.
Websites just hang, and never get to where they are supposed to go. The status loop on tabs just spins and spins but never loads the site. Go to the same site on Safari and there in a second. It is like dial up slow. Have tried all the troubleshooting tips(reset, delete/re-create profiles, uninstall/reinstall, updated flash) nothing works.
Firefox had been working fine until latest update. What gives?

Try the Firefox Safe Mode to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in Safe Mode."
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.
If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

• Safari painfully slow on new Mac Mini

I know there have been a number of threads on this topic and I have tried all of the tricks listed but Safari is still painfully slow to load web pages. I have tested my internet connection and it is fine. The real interesting thing here is that when I boot up under Windows (using Boot Camp) web pages load blazingly fast under IE, so it seems unlikely that I have a hardware problem. I have also tried Firefox with similar results. I love this new machine but I am pulling my hair out over its browsing performance.
Anyone have a (new) thought?

Please try a test account to see how Safari works
there, if you do not have an other user account,
Go to System preferences ->Accounts ->Login Options
Tried this and believe it or not the problem was worse!
se the [+] to create one, you can later use [-] to
delete/remove the account.
Do you use a third party Firewall or one on your
router ?
No on both accounts
Do you use DHCP Lease ?
Yes, I hit the "renew lease" button which had no effect
In the Network ->TCP/IP tab do you have DNS # values
entered in the
DNS Servers box.
No entries in the DNS
Proxies tab, do you have any proxies selected ? if
Yes how does Safari surf with out it ?
No proxies selected
Let us know what your findings are.
Eme: )
I am going to try FireFox again and see if there are any things I can tweak that make it bearable.
Thanks, Richard

• Acrobat 9 Pro: Printing Menu Painfully Slow

Hi folks, new here and first post... I'm having problems with my Adobe Pro V9.  When I click the print icon, or select print, the dialogue box for the print menu is painfully slow to come up.  Even on small size, low resolution documents it can take over 60 secs for the print dialogue screen to come up.
Does anyone know why this is the case? Can and how can it be fixed?
One of the IT guys here gave me a big load of tosh about why it does this but I know from experience that it has got worse since first install and that some documents spool up really quickly.  Feedback and advice much appreciated.

I have had some issues, but nothing as bad as you. It may be that your file has a lot of graphics or such.
There appears to be a lot of preprocessing going on before the actual print that becomes the problem.

• Remove/add panel to applet speedy in 1.3.x; painfully slow in 1.4.1/2.beta

The following code (which was working for years, including even 1.3.x) suddenly fails in 1.4.1 and 1.4.2beta on both win 2000 and win xp
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM :
An applet consists of 2 components: a contents panel and a button. The contents panel consists of one of several panels of components which are swapped at run-time. The first time a panel is added, the applet works fine, but subsequent additions of the "cached" panel cause 1.4.1 and 1.4.2beta to go to 100% utilization and take 10 seconds before properly displaying the panel.
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Load applet described above (and whose short complete example is reproduced below), then click on button "Swap Contents". Each click should swap the contents between 2 panels very quickly. 1.3.x releases did all swaps quickly as expected. Suddenly, in 1.4.1 and 1.4.2beta, the first click is fine, but subsequent clicks are painfully slow.
---------- BEGIN SOURCE ----------
// Java code to reproduce bug followed by html file to load applet
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
public class TestRemoveAddApplet extends java.applet.Applet {
Container contentPanel = new Panel();
Button button = new Button("Swap contents");
Panel contents1 = new Panel();
Panel contents2 = new Panel();
Label contentsL1 = new Label("Contents #1");
Label contentsL2 = new Label("Contents #2");
Component current = contents2;
public void init() {
setLayout(new BorderLayout());
add(contentPanel,"Center");
add(button,"South");
button.addActionListener(new Swap());
contents1.add(contentsL1);
contents2.add(contentsL2);
// initialize contents
swapContents();
class Swap implements ActionListener {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
swapContents();
void swapContents() {
current = (current == contents1 ? contents2 : contents1);
// remove contents of previous contents panel
contentPanel.removeAll();
// display new contents
contentPanel.add(current);
validate();
HTML file follows:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Test Remove / Add in Applet</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<OBJECT classid="clsid:8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93"
WIDTH = 100% HEIGHT = 100% >
<PARAM NAME = CODE VALUE = "TestRemoveAddApplet" >
<PARAM TYPE = "application/x-java-applet;version=1.1" >
</OBJECT>
</BODY>
</HTML>
---------- END SOURCE ----------

Try hiding the panels first then adding them then show. I know its crazy but I have gotten better performance this way with 1.4.1x. Try it.
current.setVisible(false);
contentPanel.add(current);
current.setVisible(false);

• Air Drop Painfully Slow on MacBook Retina with 10.8.2

Hi
My Retina MacBook works pretty fine and wireless networking is stable - unless I try to send a file to my girlfriend's identical Mac via Air Drop. The actual transfer is painfully slow and all other connections such as loading webpages start to stutter as well.
The OS X firewall is switched off since I use Little Snitch 3 to check incoming traffic. But even when Little Snitch is switched off, the symptoms persist.
Any ideas what could be the problem?
Cheers, -sven

Late late last night I solved the problem
I have  both Adobe Acrobat X Pro and Adobe Reader X
I could neither update Reader nor install Reader X1.
On a hunch,  I launched Acrobat Pro , was notified of update which I could not install,either.
Same error message about  a changed environment  as I had received when unable to update Reader .
Recalling I  had similar Adobe issue one or more years ago, I UNINSTALLED Acrobat Pro and reinstalled from scratch
- I was then able to upgrade Acrobat Pro X
- I was able to install Reader Xl

• PAINFULLY slow- can take 4 min to infinity to change tabs!

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro (original unibody MBP) that's running PAINFULLY slow! I used to be able to run 2 browsers with 15 tabs each, Photoshop, and word all at once. Over the last couple months, I can have as little as a browser with a few tabs and it grinds to a halt. I can simply click on a tab, or on a drop down menu, and I'll get the spinning beach ball for 4 or 5 minutes. Even cmd-opt-esc is unresponsive. Then, minutes later, it'll instantly execute anything I commanded over the last several minutes.  Firefox seems to be the worst offender, but it can happen no matter what's running.  It can happen immediately after rebooting, too (I used to only have to reboot every few weeks, now it's several times per day)
CPU load is 98% idle after it catches up, but once it catches up and the graph refreshes and I can see it was about 60% user load and 15% system while it was choking on the monumental task of opening the "File" drop-down menu
There are 482 threads and 129 processes.
This is the original unibody Mac with 2.4 ghz core 2 duo. It's been upgraded with 4GB of ram (2.7 used) and a 1TB hard drive.  I did those upgrades 2 years ago and they've worked fine until recently.  Clicking  "get info" on the HD says 333 GB are free, but under "about this mac" it says 121 GB are free and 211 are used for "backup".  I'm running OS-X 10.9.2 and it says there are no updates to install.
I've reset system manager
I've reset PRAM
I've fixed disk permissions.
No effect
I know I don't have the speediest machine, but even a mid-80's mac could smoothly handle a drop-down menu, and this is a recent problem.  I'm at a loss here, guys. Any idea? My computer is quickly becoming unusable!
