PPC 9600 SCSI Optical Drive/Software Issue

Hi All
Powermac 9600 with Sonnet G3 processor, Sonnet ATA card and ATA/IDE hard drives, everything else pretty much as-built standard. Running OS9.1. All had been normal for quite a while.
But now the computer will not recognize the standard CD-ROM drive on either the internal or external SCSI bus. A ZIP drive runs on the internal SCSI bus with no problems. I did the PRAM Zap and the termination ritual dance to no avail.
SCSI Probe can see the optical drive but reports (with two different drives and on either bus)
"Trying device x.3.0:
Failed: Driver installed but no drive entries
Trying device x.3.1:
Failed: Logical units not supported"
I take this to mean it is not a hardware issue. I replaced the Apple CD/DVD Driver Extension but that didn't solve the problem.
Is this a firmware or ROM or other issue? Whatever it is, how do I fix it?
Thanks,
Cookie

Cookie,
The SCSI chain was a lot of power provided to a home computer.  It contributed to the higher cost of the computer.  It also added to the longevity of the hardware usefulness and ease of use.  It was decades before a PC could boot from an external device the way a Mac could in the '80s.
Here is what matters in SCSI.
1.  It is not plug and play until configured.  Each device has to be configured to a specific address.  The benefit is the ability to have seven devices recognized at startup.
2.  Termination.  The signal needs to know when to stop searching.  At startup, the host or computer will 'poll' the devices.  The first device that it sees with a system folder will allow the computer to boot up.  With 'Startup Disk' you can reassign that task to another system folder on another device.  The benefit?  You can easily repair one hard drive by booting from another drive.  Termination tells the host that all devices have been accounted for and it can now move on to the task of reading a drive.  Zapping the PRAM tells the host to start fresh and poll all devices.  It takes longer to startup but it creates new directories, or table of contents, so to speak.  Otherwise the computer may lose track of where to find a file.
3.  The highest ID number just sets the priority or que during the device access.  The higher the ID #, the sooner it comes in the polling process.
If you want to optimize your SCSI devices, study the rules programmed into the protocol, otherwise, just enjoy the fact that a Mac will let you swap out drives and reconfigure without a lot of trouble.  A 'D' drive in a PC will not boot the computer, even if it is a carbon copy of the 'C' drive.  In fact, change the C drive to the D drive location in an older PC and the PC will not start.
The external SCSI port was the greatest hardware tool Apple ever offered to the government surplus shopper. We would buy Macs at government auctions and test them within minutes with an external zip drive or hard drive.  The PC guys would spend a day on each used PC because they had to find drivers for the video card, the network card, the hard drives, etc..  The SCSI chain was plug and play if we had our external drive set at ID 1 or our zip drive set at 5 because the internal drives were almost always still at the factory setting of 0.
Enjoy your mac and good luck with your optical drive.

  • Trying to repair Satellite A105-S4201 (driver/software issue)

I have been fixing a friend's laptop that had about 83 viruses on it, and ended up having to reinstall windows in order to get it to boot properly. I rebuilt a windows install disk using the I386 folder provided on her hard drive.
Everything checked out and windows activated seemlessly, but I am in fact still having a problem. The toshiba website does not seem to have the correct drivers or software for this product, as the following devices are still in need of a proper driver, according to my device manager:
-Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus
    -SM Bus Controller
    -Video Controller
    -Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
the provided video driver fails to install, saying that there was no suitable device (was an nvidia driver on the site...prob doesnt even run on an nvidia card). The audio does not seem to work either. The last issue is that the media keys do not function properly. Is there some sort of driver source that can fill me in on these loose gaps? Been wrecking my mind for hours and im about to stroke out and tell her to buy some recovery cds.

Updates! I now have every device in device manager matched up with appropriate drivers. The only issue remaining is with the keyboards extended functionality, including the media keys and the Functions for the f key row (such as increase/decrease brightness). Where is the software/drivers i need for this?

  • Constant Driver/software issues, please

I have had an Audigy 2 ZS Gamer for over 8 months now and I haven't been able to use it properly yet. There seems to be this stupid idea that form in more important than function. the drivers look all pretty, but cause my Norton AV to malfunction, take way too much processor time while operating the interface, and have caused numerous problems with my 3 regular games: World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, and bejewelled.
    I'll detail:
The interface: it's pretty and all, but it doesn't match the rest of my operating windows and the response time is way too long to any clicks. the controls have too small of a reaction area, smaller than the actual controls so that when I click something, I don't have a guarantee that I actually clicked the right spot. combine that with it's reaction time and I get very frustrated trying to adjust anything since I have to click 4-5 times per item. Why can't you just use the base windows components and make it operate like a normal windows app instead of 'skinning' everything to make it look pretty? That is specifically the reason I quit using Winamp. That's issue #. Work on getting things to work right, then try to make it look pretty while keeping the functionality.
Norton AV: I keep having Norton AV 2005 malfunction, saying it can't start, then triggering the Windows XP security center alert for about -2 minutes after I restart. This happens with all versions of the creative software that work with this card. Norton says specifically that it is creative software that causes it. Granted, Norton is not the most functional AV solution, but it is the most quickly updated. I have had more problems with McAfee and I don't trust any of the others to update quickly enough to actually prevent infection. I will not run without an AV program, despite what people say. I have had to wipe my system far too many times due to an infection (3 times) that I was unable to get rid of. Please make your software work properly with other programs and stop the attitude of 'my software is more important' that causes stupid problems like this.
World of Warcraft: the surround and center channels have extremely low volume even when cranked up all the way. I have to lower the main channels to at most half volume, then crank the center and surround channels, then crank the main volume control up all the way and use the speaker or headphone volume to control the actual volume. This creates a lot of noise, and since it works normally with my WinDVD, I have to do this adjustment nearly every time I play WoW. there is also an issue where the volume of what is picked up by my microphone is way too low. using Ventrilo while in this game, I can only listen since nobody can hear me when I use my mic. This same mic and headphone work just fine with my on-board sound.
Diablo 2: the music is scratchy and skips a lot, so I end up having to turn it off. I like the music and Blizzard spent a lot of time creating it. it sets the whole mood of the game and makes it more enjoyable. Surround sound also doesn't work quite right, leaving out some sounds. both of these work fine with my cheap on-board sound. I enjoy playing this game more with my on board sound.
Bejewelled: there are certain points where there are cascades and the jewels line up perfectly and I get about 6-8 groups at once, but with this sound card only and not my cheap on-board sound or my cheap Muse XL sound card, when those cascades happen, I get this aweful screeching sound when it tries to play more than one sound at a time.
Now, before anyone says 'it's the motherboard' or 'it the memory bandwidth', I'll show you what I've gone through with this card, and trying it out again after every change:
    processors:
    Athlon 64 3500+ socket 939
    Athlon 44 X2 4200+ socket 939
    Motherboards:
Asus A8V K8T800Pro AGP motherboard (first one bought with my 3500+)
Abit AN8-SLi nVidia nForce 4 SLi chipset (bought this anticipating upgrade to 4200+)
Asus A8N-SLi Premium nForce 4 SLi chipset (bought this when I realized the 4200+ wouldn't work with the Abit board)
    Memory:
GB Corsair DDR400 2-2-2-5 (52MBX2) (now in my nephew's system)
2GB Corsair DDR400 2-3-2-5 (GBX2) (never run in the system at the same time)
    Video cards:
Geforce 6800GT (with the K8T800Pro board)
Geforce 7800GT (with the other 2 motherboards
    Sound cards compared to:
On-board sound from ALC650 chips on all 3 motherboards (works ok, but sound quality not so good and processor usage too high)
Hercules MuseXL (didn't have all the capabilites I wanted)
Hercules FortissimoIII (had driver issues, sound bleeds into Vent)
Turtle Beach Montego (had driver issues, music/midi doesn't play right)
    Speakers:
Turtle Beach surround sound headphones with microphone
Logitech 5. speakers (can't remember the model, but it's all analog)
I paid $39 for this stupid card and I want to be able to work with it. My last experience with a Creative product was horrible for the same reasons, an AWE64 back in the ISA days, and was the exact reason I didn't buy another Creative product until this one. I had a friend cheer on the Audigy, so I figured you might have changed a bit, but I found out it all got worse. The only way you are going to fix problems like this is to cut out the stupid fluff and get back to the basics. Fluff may sell to the stupid people, but it really annoys those of us who want things to work.
Simply put: PRETTY DOESN'T COUNT IF IT DOESN'T WORK RIGHT!!!!!!!
    K. I.S.S.

I want to reiterate this to the programmers and support staff of this company. Again, they have come out with garbage that is more fluff and less functionality. Someone chime in and tell them that we want working, not necessarily pretty. Crap painted in pretty colors is still crap.

  • Upgrade optical drive OS issues

    Hi,
    Please somebody; advice needed:
On ebay I bought en older Macbook A1181 (2ghz, lion/win7) with combo Matsushita CW-8221. Now I want to upgrade it to an superdrive. ifixit.com shows as alternatives the P/N: UJ-857-C, UJ-867, or GSA-S10N and I found an GWA 4080M somewhere else. So the technical issue I'll find out -somehow-by my self- (?), but my question is do I have to reistall the OS after the upgrade? Anyone experience about this kind of upgrade and if possible some suggestions for the superdrive to choose?
Thanks in advance for any answer.

I have similar issue - just migrated everything from IMac running Lion, to brand spankin' new MBPro Retina early 2013, running 10.8.3.
When I open up CS4 standard apps (that were fine on my iMac), the following happens:
    -AI works fine
    -InDesign Works fine
-Photoshop says it's missing many components and to reinstall
-Adobe Acrobat Pro wants me to launch another CS app  (such as Photoshop), before I can open and re-authorize. Eveidently launching      AI or InD isn't to it's liking.
So...I tried a total reinstall, and same thing you describe happens;  the disk gets stuck in the Adobe Air part of the progress bar. I gave up after about 20 mins.... Then tried just reinstalling PS and Acrobat- same thing. Now I'm wondering if I'll get same error as you, if I leave it going.
FYI, I somehow got a live tech at Adobe, who after telling me CS4 isnt' supported, suggested my disk is messed up since it's old (despite my having it filed away for 5 yrs without touching it after first install...hmmm).
After reading many forums w/ compliaints about CS6 and Mountain Lion, I'm thinking about buying a full version, old 5.5 (new boxed) software and just living w/ that for awhile. Since I can't upgrade from CS4 to CS6, I'm looking for alternatives. Thoughts, anyone?

  • Optical Drive Read Issue

I have a 2 year old iMAC 27".  (4 GB DDR3, 1TB)  Recently, the drive refuses to read multi-layer disks, which has resulted in a program (X-Plane v9.7) that requires a "disk 1" to be present, to be no longer functioning or useful.  Please Help!

Thanks, iCare, for taking the time to respond.
I have tried all manner of DVD's, CD's, everything.  All work as advertised.  The X-Plane set of 6 disks however, just won't seem to work in that internal drive.
The Disk 1 that I need to "prove" that I am the owner and play the simulator is scratched, but reads perfectly in PCs.  A lot of useless drama over a $60.00 piece of software.  Especially when there are easier ways to protect against piracy.
I drove the 150 miles to my nearest Apple Store only to find them unresponsive, uninformed, untrained, and unable to offer me any help other than to drive home, pack up my computer, bring it back to them, and let them "look at it", and perhaps fix it, but they were unable to give me a timeframe, or a fixed price.  They did agree with the external drive solution, but they couldn't sell me one!  I always thought Apple was better than that.
I finally bought a $44.00 LG external drive, and the disk mounted right up.  Problem solved, for now.  Thanks again.

  • Hard Drive / software issues on Mac Book Pro

I am a new MAC owner! I have splashed out on a 17" Mac Book Pro with standard configuration of 2Gb Ram and 160GB HD. iLife 2006 is on as standard and I have loaded Parallels with MS XP service pack 2, Office 2004 iWorks 2006 and Reunion Family tree software and iTunes with all my music transfered from my old PC which fills about 8GB on my 80GB iPod. Last night I tried to load my back up documents from a portable HD it all started ok then an error message said not enough memory. When I checked the HD there was only 8.14Gb of space left on the HD with the rest being taken up. iTunes seems to have 79GB of space and iPhoto abot 60GB with about 100 photos in.
Does anyone know where all my HD resources are? Have I inadvertantly given everything over to windows in some strange way? What has happened? HEEELLLP! Please.

it might be worth reposting over in one of the Mac Book Pro forums. (you're currently posting in iTunes for Windows, and the Mac specialists may not see you here.)
    Mac Book Pro
a note about your itunes problem on the old PC:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4446770#4446770
... what you're getting there is consistent with itunes being run in an odd "Display Settings" compatibility mode.
use the following document to find where the compatibility mode controls are kept:
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode
now below the checkbox discussed in that document, you should see three different checkboxes in a "Display Settings" area. make sure that none of those boxes are checked.
does that help with the display problem on that PC? (if you've still got it about?)

  • Older enclosure issues w/newer optical drive

    Hello All,
Bought an LG GH22NP21 dvd burner and it works fine as an internal in my powermac g5 1.6, but I want to make it work in my old Lacie enclosure. The enclosure is one of the old ones with a fan that housed the original superdrives (in this case dvr104) and connects by FW 400. The enclosure will run the new LG in some cases but has some behavior that makes it a no go (intermittently not being recognized by host computers, won't burn to some sorts of media). It seems that the enclosure is causing the issues.
Anyone have any ideas of how to 'update' an old enclosure like this work on a newer optical drive? I've searched for firmware updates but can't seem to even find the enclosure/product on the web, let alone an actual firmware update. Possibly it's not the firmware that's lacking? Maybe the actual chipboard? I'd love to use this enclosure.
Any light shed on what makes an enclosure compatible with a newer drive would be much appreciated! (Or conversely what makes an enclosure NOT work)
    Thanks in advance.
    Szucc

    Jeff et al,
Sorry for the delays in posts and the resulting stop-and-go nature. Appreciate very much the thoughts and help.
Actually the G5's FW400 is indeed in question as I'm having an issue with Digital Performer that may or may not have to do with the FW card/bus. When editing and mixing (with my audio interface and the data hard drive connected by FW400) I get stopped, routinely, by the colored pinwheel. But the culprit is not yet known and I'm trying many tests; FW may not be the issue at all. But I must find the answer as I can't work with this happening and clients in here are put at disadvantage.
But, with regard to the optical drive, the issue (at least of the failed burning to dvd-r) happens when the drive is connected to 2 different computers, so it's unlikely an issue with the firewire ports/busses/cards on the computers.
So yes, it should be an issue with the old Lacie ENCLOSURE. But is it the firewire bridge? The jury may still be out because I've reinstalled the original optical drive (dvr 104) in the enclosure and the drive is recognized immediately by my G5 (whereas the LG drive inside Lacie would NEVER be recognized). So that points to an adverse interaction between the old enclosure and this newer drive.
My next step, I suppose, would be to try burning to dvd-r with the dvr104 inside the Lacie. If that fails, then, yes, it could very likely be the FW bridge. But if it succeeds then maybe it's the chipset [for lack of better term]? IE: the enclosure itself just simply cannot support this newer LG drive.
So my question is: What makes an enclosure "not support a newer or particular drive"? Is a FW enclosure NOT simply a housing with a power supply and a firewire bridge? Is it much more than that? And what specifically is under the hood that makes an enclosure "more than that"...?
Would LOVE to understand that better.
    Thanks again for any thoughts.
Will try burning to dvd-r with the old/original dvr104 back in the enclosure and report back.

  • Optical Drive no longer showing on C drive

    Hi everyone,
My optical drive (CD/DVD) is no longer accessable, either via C drive or any other means.
The drive is still mechanically working, accepting and ejecting discs, but I have no meams of accessing it.
I'm thinking this is a driver/software issue and have tried to download drivers from HP but no luck.
My TouchSmart is an IQ512me (64 bit).
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

  • After Upgrade to 10.5.8 Optical Drive will not Recognize DVD's

    Hello Everyone,
I was hoping that someone would be able to shed light on a problem I recently ran into after upgrading from Leopard 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 and possibly suggest a solution.
I believe there is an issue with the optical drive software. The reason I suspect this is because one evening I was able to watch a DVD without any problems. After completing the upgrade to version 10.5.8 of Leopard last night, the same DVD failed to play. When inserting the disk, the optical drive makes a whirring sound for about a minute then proceeds to spit out the DVD. I've tested this with CD's, which seem to work fine. Other DVD's have the same issue as the first.
Can anyone suggest anything to help sort this issue out?
    Many thanks to everyone.
    Ron

I'm facing the same issues with my MacBook and its "SuperDrive". Right after inserting any media, it spits it out immediately, thus, I'm not able to read nor write any kind of disc. Below are the specs for my "SuperDrive":
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
    Firmware: KA14
    Connection: ATAPI
    Recording: Yes
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Sim
    Records CD: -R, -RW
    Records DVD: -R, -RW
    Recording: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
I have sent Steve Jobs an email ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) and posted a feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
Probably you guys have seen it already, but MacBook Pro owners are having similar issues with their "SuperDrives": http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=0&tstart=0

  • Optical Drive makes noise twice on startup

    Hi all,
This problem first appeared when I first changed my RAM from 4GB to 8GB last year.
After a year, the RAM broke down, failed the hardware test.
I replaced it and though the hardware test is passed, the optical drive noise issue persists.
The problem now is: upon startup, it's normal to have the optical drive noise ONCE, but my machine produces a second noise when it can't show up the Apple logo within 3 seconds, i.e. the optical drive searches for the hard drive again. (for a total of 2 times, it lets out the optical drive search noise)
To be more specific, when I restart it after a weird startup, it's normal again with just one optical drive noise (Only occuring upon the first startup).
I'm afraid it might be a repeat of history and the RAM breaks down after one year...
    Thanks in advance.

    rx,
I am having this exact same problem with my Macbook as well. I am very frustrated. My computer will be 2 yrs old in August. Within the last few months, I have had the battery replaced for burning up the computer (June '07), the optical drive replaced (Nov 07), and the hard drive replaced (Feb '08). It appears I am going to have to take it back to the mac store to get this fixed. This has been going on for a month and I have tried everything including Disk First Aid to try to get it stop! Please post if you find something else! Meanwhile, I will say the apple care warranty was a better investment then the computer itself. I have been VERY DISAPPOINTED with the product and I have had Mac products for years (Mac Performa, iMac, eMac, iPodmini).

  • Optical drive....dead or software issue?  How can I tell?

I'm using a PowerMac G5 with OS 10.4.11. Recently I routinely went to put a DVD-R into the drive to copy some archived files for a client, and it froze. I restarted, drive wouldn't work or eject. I got the disc out using the "paperclip" hole on the drive, but now, the drive isn't even showing up in the System Profiler. When I go to ATA in the Hardware section it says "no information found." The eject button doesn't work on my keyboard either.
I've tried taking the drive out and cleaning it, and tried to use the Hardware Test that came on my G5 disc but it won't work. I also booted from a system disc on my backup external Firewire CD drive and ran Disk Utility/repair disk, and it did some repair but the darned Optical drive is still showing as "no information found."
I've since ordered a new drive and I'm waiting for it to arrive, but is there any way for me to tell if this is a software/OS X issue, or if it's a hardware one?

I just wanted to add that this just happened to me on my G5,I put in a store bought CD and noticed it did not show up on the desk,so I decided to eject and I would not. I tried the paper clip method and it opened it a bit but not enough. Then I discovered on reboot that the drive was not even a choice any more.I still tried to get the disc to eject and finally did, somehow, now I am afraid to insert anything in my Super drive, what is going on I wonder. The system did not even see the drive until I forced it open then everything looks fine. I find it too unusual we would both be having the same issues,I dunno.
Check that: I did insert my Leopard install disc and on the next reboot ran Disc Utility, everything worked fine there, eject and everything!

  • Optical drive can be read on Windows, but not on Mac OSX. Software issue?

My optical drive has not been able toread blank/burned Cds/DVDs for some time now on my Mac Mini 2010 running Mavericks. This problem first occured with Snow Leopard about a year ago (Never had Lion/Mountain Lion). At first I thought it was a hardware issue, until I booted up Windows 7 and it read the disc just fine. I have reset the PRAM, I have tried other discs, I have tried those discs on other computers (it obviously will work on this computer, just not OSX). I have seen similar issues to this in the past but no one seems to have tried/noticed if it works on the same computer with a different OS. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The problem lies with the URLs for your media files. The one for the top episode is
    http://www.metalspeak.com/episodes/MetalsPeak 10 - GenresPeak.mp3
This URL contains spaces, which are not allowed in a URL. Browsers - and from what you say iTunes in Windows - handles this by substituting the code %20 for each space when requesting the file; iTunes for Mac does not.
You need either to change the filename for each media file, removing the spaces or substituting something such as an underscore, and then amending the feed accordingly: or at the least to amend the feed by replacing each space with %20.
It's the same problem in the other feed.

  • Help required with optical drive issues on a 2008 Mac Book Pro

I've got a problem with my Optical Drive not accepting CD, DVD etc. All the disks I put in just whirr around for a few seconds and then spit out the discs. First I've read on loads of discussion forums that the symptoms said the optical drive was capput, so I bought a new one and installed it using those very good guides by ifixit. Booted up the Mac Book Pro, all working as previously, put in a CD into the NEW optical drive....same result. So methinks this is some sort of software/config issue. Read a few more blogs/discussion and manged to get the optical drive to read my CD's when I put them in during boot up - works as it should, copies them to iTunes etc.....Ejected the CD put in another one.....back to the original problem.....disc whirrs around and get spat out after a few seconds.
Anyone experienced this problem as well and found a resolution....

    Hi Mate,
    I didn't do an OS install, I took it to an apple store and made a Genius Bar appointemnt. Explained the proble and after 15min conversation, they diagnosed it as teh following;
The felt/rubber where you put the CD/DVD had gone hard and the friction is causing the CD/DVD to get stuck and be loaded. They tried to tell me that I need to replace the top case  (£140+VAT) as its in-built into it or I can use a £3 spudger to push the CD's in......needles to say the Spudger works fine.....Shame I wasted £100 on the new optical drive ;o( Maybe sell teh spare on eBay....Happy days!

  • What do i do when external optical drive doesn't show up in finder?  how can i import software, music, etc. when the drive isn't recognized/mounted/whatever?

the internal optical drive on my early 2006 20"imac has mechanical problems ejecting discs.  i've gone thru all the recommended steps to eject discs, and have luckily been able to eject the last 3 discs but only after spending 30-60 minutes going thru all of the steps over and over, and today just trying "eject disc" in itunes since i had itunes open.  i don't want to put another disc in - the drive clearly has problems with the mechanical eject mechanism, and from what i've read that's not unique to my computer.
i bought an external optical drive: lite on, clamshell design to avoid problems with the eject mechanism; i contacted the mfr who said it's mac compatible.
the drive plays dvds, which is all i've tried so far, but doesn't show up in finder.  so i don't know how to use it to load software, or music, or anything besides watch dvds.
is there something i can do to get the drive recognized/mounted/whatever?  i would prefer to not spend the $220 which was quoted to me by an authorized mac repair company, even tho i think that's probably a reasonable cost given the delicacy of the operation as shown on ifixit.com.
    thanks!

I have an external LaCie burner and it will not show up on my Mac unless I insert a CD or DVD - in that case, the media will show up (I have these settings in the Pref Pane):
If you want to burn files or music to blank media, you can use Finder or Disk Utility for files, but should use an iTunes playlist/iTunes for music and a movie burn app for videos/movies (such as iDVD, Roxio Toast, Burn, etc).
If you simply want to drag files over as a backup, an external hard drive is a much better solution than a burner.

  • How do I install software from DVD on mini with no Optical Drive

I purchased Aperture on DVD at an Apple store in 2007 when the App store did not exist. The new Mac mini does not have an optical drive. I did not migrate applications from my previous Mac mini because it doesn't seem to let you choose which applications.  (I had several legacy migrations involved and didn't want that junk on my new mini.)  The App store, of course, does not know I've already paid for Aperture and wants to charge me to download it.  I discovered you cannot install from another computer's DVD just by mounting that DVD on the target computer.  It will tell you it can't install over the network.   It also won't let you drag the contents of the DVD onto the target computer (which worked with Office 2011).  It will tell you that method of installation is not supported. All Apple could suggest was to buy an optical drive which would have been almost anoher $100. Apple support doesn't seem to understand why Aperture is not in my iTunes purchase history (because iTunes didn't exist for Aperture then!)
I just had a wonderful discovery.  I found this support article that details how you have to turn DVD sharing on under Sharing Preferences on the computer that does have the optical drive, then you can use the Remote Disc under Devices on the target computer to request use of that drive. Finally, the installer will run.
I'm putting this info here because I searched but was unable to find this subject in the Support Community.  I'm sure someone has asked this question, but I couldn't form a query that would find it.
Article from Apple with instructions for Remote Disc
Now if someone could just tell me how to get the App store turned on for my copy of Aperture so I don't have this issue in the future when no Apple computer will have an optical drive!

Actually, when I followed that link, one of the related links in More Like This was a real find!  An actual download of Aperture, albeit a trial, but that would have solved my problem too.  I tested it and although it's embeded in a support article, the link to the trial version of Aperture still works.
Thanks!  Great info here if you can find it.
