PPC- Intel via Migration Assistant.

I've recently upgraded myself and a couple users to intel machines and it seems if I use the migration assistant to transfer everything over I end up having issues. I usually end up reloading their machine with a fresh install and reinstalling all the apps manually. Is this a known issue? You'd think with Intel being the only option, 99% of people upgrading at this point would be going from PPC to Intel and that Apple would have thought about this?
Any thoughts, suggestions???

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries

In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
/Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data

Install Logic 9 via Migration Assistant

Hi,
I was just replacing my old Macbook with an Macbook Pro. I also purchased Logic 9 update (I use to use Logic 8). Everything works fine. My old Macbook is now a quite solid back up computer, "just in case". Unfortunately, the DVD drive is not working a 100% anymore. I would like to make the Logic 9 update on the Macbook as well, but I cannot use the internal DVD. I was thinking about replacing-it or buy an external device. However, this it will cost money and, as I said before, I am not really using the computer...
Is it possible to successful install Logic 9 from the new Macbook Pro (FireWire) or an external HD clone (alt. Time Machine Back up) to the old Macbook via Migration Assistant?

Put your old MacBook in Target Disk Mode,
and it shows up on the desktop as another drive.
You should be able to use the new MacBook's DVD drive
to install Logic 9 on the old MB drive,
by choosing that disk as the destination disk during install.
To use Target Disk Mode, turn off the old MB,
connect the two with a Firewire cable,
Turn on the old MB while holding down the "T" key.
The old MB screen will show the Firewire symbol.
It should then show up on the new MB desktop as a disk.

Inability to properly move over iPhoto library via Migration Assistant

My hard drive on my iMac recently crashed, and I got a new one via my warranty. I'd been running Time Machine regularly, and thankfully nearly everything was saved, but my iPhoto library doesn't seem to be working out properly. I can't get it to load into the system.
I had Leopard before the crash, and I upgraded to Snow Leopard install when I got the new hard drive. I ran Migration Assistant, and I can see that all of my photos are on the hard drive, but when I load up the iPhoto Library, it gives me an empty folder with no photos in it whatsoever. I tried important the entire photo directory into iPhoto, and that gave me a mishmash, with every original and every copy and edited photo in there, in no particular order, without my keywords, starred photos, or anything like that. This is unacceptable, so in a fit of irritation, I deleted all the photos I had in iPhoto, and decided to reimport via Migration Assistant my entire iPhoto library again.
I think I screwed something up, because this wound up creating a new profile that had the photos in it, that was only accessible after I changed the sharing & permissions settings. It still gives me errors, saying that I don't always have permission to access the files via iPhoto. I've tried taking the entire photo and dropping it into my main folder and resetting the iPhoto Library to look at that, but it hasn't yet been successful. I can also only periodically see my photos as individual files (does iPhoto lock away your files somehow when they're imported via the iPhone), so I think that I could just reimport everything into a fresh iPhoto library, but I don't want to do so except as a last ditch effort, because I'm not sure it'll catch everything that I had, and also I spent literally hours starring and organizing my photos. I don't want to have to go through that again, especially if it isn't successful.
Also, as a sidenote, how should I have done this? At this point, would it just be best to do a clean reinstall of the entire system, deleting the accidentally created additional new users profiles which I don't want and can't seem to get rid of. I just want my new hard drive to be as close a mirror of the old one, saved via Time Machine.

I remigrated my originally saved drive, and encountered the same problem. It seems to be an issue with iPhoto not recognizing my iPhoto library from before. Could this be because I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard? Everytime I try to rebuild that library, it comes up as empty.
If this is the case, how do I get in and get the photos out of iPhoto Library so I can reimport them, even without the tags that I had. Of course, I want my tags and stars, but I really don't want to just lose my photos. I've managed to grab a couple of them, but they seem to just be thumbnails, rather than full sized photos. They're at 320x240, which is way too small for all my photos to be.

I transferred data from my external hard drive to my restored Mac Book Pro via migration assistant and now my external hard drive in time capsule has red minus signs. How do I get rid of that without getting rid of any of my data?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.

Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

Login problem with account imported via Migration Assistant

I have a new Mac Mini running Lion Server.
I set up the first user account on it out of the box with username Administrator. It received UID 501.
Then I used the Migration Assistant to pull across my user account "charlie" from my Time Capsule backup of $LAPTOP. As "charlie" has UID 502 on the laptop it received UID 502 on the server box. No obvious conflict there.
I fired up Server, configured it as a standalone server on the LAN, and switched on the web and wiki servers. Checking the Users pane, "charlie" shows up as a valid user.
Now for the baffling bit:
If I point a web browser at http://mini-me.local/ I get the server's home page.
If I try to log in as Administrator (with the correct password) it works fine.
If I try to log in as charlie (with the correct password) I get "Incorrect user name or password" every time. (Yes, I've tried resetting the password.)
If I create a test user account on the server and try to log in it works fine.
Note that I have not created an LDAP server -- I'm running Lion Server in about the simplest configuration possible while I kick the tyres.
Is there any reason why an account hauled across via Migration ***. might not work with Lion Server, while accounts created on the new machine are okay?

There are instructions to reset the mac password without a CD. You set up a new admin account then you can reset the password to your original account.
It solved the problem.

All menus greyed out after transfer to new computer via Migration Assistant

Hi!
My collegue just moved all his stuff to a new computer using the Migration Assistant.
All seem to work fine except Apple Remote Desktop 3 which start up, but the main window isn't shown and the menus are all grey.
We have tried to re-install and also tried to toss everything that's related to ARD (Like the ”Remote Desktop” folder in /Library/Application Support/Apple and the ARD prefs. file in ~/Library/Preferences) and re-installed again, but still the same.
Any ideas?
A permission problem somewhere perhaps?

This let us type in the serial number again when starting up the ”Remote Desktop.app” and all seems fine.

What is the password for the new user account that is set up via Migration Assistant?

I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro, and used Migration Assistant to download My Documents from a previous PC desktop. The migration was successful, but afterwards the new user account that was set up to house all the new documents became inaccessible to me.
My administrator's password works for my computer and I am able to log in and out, change settings, etc.
However, if I try to log in to the new user account, no password works. Through the administrator's account I have also attempted to change the password, and I am allowed to do so, but when I use the new password I set up, it still denies me access.
Additionally, if I log out the administrator's account and click the new account to log in, it prompts me to make a new password for the account, and whatever I enter is also rejected as "incorrect." (The screen shakes)
I am very frustrated my inability to access this information I must use to work, and I have no idea what the password might be, or how to change it properly.
PLEASE HELP COMMUNITY! I have only had my mac for about a week and I have had it up to hear with this "user friendly" system.

You can change the password from Visual administrator. login to visual administrator, and select services,, under that you will find the system details. change the password.
even if the visual administrator password is expired then u can go thorugh configtoo.bat and there u can change the password.
if that even not possible then u need to login to sql and can execute the commands for changing password.

Add a user to an existing installation via migration assistant?

I am about to merge two Macs (one will be sold) into one and want to transfer the user account from one computer to the other, where the existing user account is supposed to remain untouched. In the end, I want to have the existing account plus the transferred account from the other Mac. When I opened the migration assistant, I was unsure if I can do that or if it will replace anything existing on the Mac where I want to transfer the files/account to?

Just migrate the user account from the old machine. That won't affect the one you've already set up.

Disc partition when supporting both PPC & Intel via Airport & TM?

I need to support both a PPC G4 Powerbook G4 17" and a Intel based Mac Mini using an Airport Extreme and Time Machine to a RAID configured 2TB drive on the USB port on the Airport Extreme. The Intel based Mac Mini has always backed up just fine but I have never had much success getting the PPC G4 laptop to do backups after the initial backup was performed. Does it make any difference weather or not I use the Apple Partition Map or the GUID Partition Map when I set up the volume since I am not using it to start up either machine? Can this be the source of my problem?

Will my new MBP have the same IP address if I use Migration Assistant?

In a couple of weeks I'll have my new MacBook Pro-13". I want to transfer all files from my current Intel MacBook via Migration Assistant. I'll have both Macs running 10.6.3 Snow Leopard or latest OS when I do this.
OK but now I still want to use the old MacBook -but won't the IP Address (looks like this: 192.168.0.###) be the same on both Macs after using Migration Assistant? If so, then how do I avoid that? Do I set-up my NEW MacBook Pro first and then use Migration Assistant? Or ???
Thanks for any advise as I will only have a couple of days to set-up my new MBP as I am giving the old MB to my daughter and then she's leaving to fly home! If no volcano of course!

Yes. Most 'ad-hoc' home networks will have 'something' handing out IP addresses. Typically this will be a Router or possibly Router/Modem combination depending which kind of DSL Service you have. In an environment like this the Router/Gateway will be the DHCP Server. If you're not manually assigning IP address this would be the case. No DHCP Server AFAIK hands out the same IP addresses to two or more separate devices connecting to the same network. If you are manually assigning IP Addresses you still would not do this. Even if you did a warning message would appear telling you the IP address was in use. This is typical of the sort of basic networking most home environments have.

As already mentioned whenever I've tried this they never transfer anyway. In which case don't bother selecting the option. If you're using firewire cables you don't have to have them connected to any network at all.
It's always a good idea to turn on anything new and test it. It's not impossible for there to be a hardware problem. It's rare but it does happen.

How to keep a clean install with migration assistant

I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro (5,5 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.26 GHz) with 8 GB RAM. I am currently running on OS 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to Yosemite.
I also plan to replace my original drive with an SSD.
I have had a series of Macs going back many years, usually getting a new one every few years and migrating everything from the old to the new. My Macs always start out fast but start slowing down within a short while. I was told this could be due to the fact that I am importing a bunch of old stuff onto my machines and that it would be better to keep the old stuff on a separate drive.
So I want to do a clean install of Yosemite and the small handful of other apps I need.
I will pull the original drive and put it in an enclosure and can either use it or my backup via Time Machine to migrate my files to the SSD via Migration Assistant.
What I am unclear on is what all I will want or need to migrate over, and what I want to avoid. I will bring my documents folder of course but I want to be careful not to bring over any unneeded apps, preferences, libraries, etc. Are there any resources for guiding me through the process? Is Migration Assistant the best tool for this?

Set up new email address before or after using migration assistant

I just purchased a new MacBook Air for my wife and I'll be using Migration assistant to transfer data from her old imac. She also wants me to set up a new email address on our mutual .me account. My question is:
should I set up the new email address before I transfer everything via migration assistant or can I do it afterwards? Will she be able to sync all her current contacts, calendar and email account when syncing/setting up a new email address?

Possible permissions issue - i used migration assistant from a backup and now i have multiple issues

So 20" dual core died on Friday. poss psu issue which i will fix in due course. In a fit of extravagance I decided this message from beyond the grave from MR JObs was telling me to buy a new quad core on Saturday morning.
Because old imac was dead i used time machine back up via "migration assistant"
intially it could see the back ups but then seemed to spring to life after 20 mins
Got message saying not all content had transferred but reckon most did except for some safari stuff ( paswords etc).
Then i started to get issues with permissions i think.... asked me for passwords every time i tried to move files between folders or to trash or do pretty much anything.
read something about permissions conflicts when migrating from another admin/home account from and old imac
That when i started to activate my over "confident with technolgy" gene - i set HD permission to owned by "me" instead of system and then applied to all enclosed items
oops
now getting lots of dodgy messages eg every driver on the make brings up eeor message sayuing it was incorrectly installed
ran permissions repair - 25 mins later loads of unexpected acls have been corrected though not all -
still getting error messages about a few which i tracked down manually one by one and, sure enough, are still showing as owned by "me" and not system. Corrected them
Noticed at this point all other .kext files in same loaction have two permissions rows for "system in "get info" window = is this the root of my problem since using migration assitant?

software updates won't install via the "software update" function but was able to install a couple of them myself direct from apple website.
back ups won;t back up to drive assigned - just keeps saying T|ime machine could not complete the back up even though there is space on freshly formatted external drive

should i reassign "system" as owner for everything and then change foders such as documents and music etc to be owned by "me" or is that tooo simplistic?

You may not have created a mess, it's possible you simply don't know where your data is after migrating. Had you followed the Setup Assistant's on-screen prompts when you initially turned on your new system you would be running just fine by now. My guess is you haven't been exposed to Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips.
Migration Assistant (MA) and Setup Assistant (SA) are cousins, similar but different. The primary difference is MA creates a new user account which can be confusing to some users. If you successfuly migrated then log out of your existing using account and you should see the new user account. Log into that account then you should see the migrated data. If you do then use Pondini's Transferring files from one User Account to another.
However if you have totally made of mess out of things then I'd start over, this time using the Setup Assistant Tips beginning where he discusses Second Chance.

Migration Assistant problem? : New iMac's iTunes doesn't see the catalog or playlist of my old Mac's songs on an external drive

So I just migrated from a 10.7.5 iMac 27" from 2009 to 10.9.4 on a 2013 27" iMac with Fusion Drive.
I don't use Time Machine. There are no backups involved here.
Used Ethernet. Only took 20 hours... (BTW, it stayed on "less than 1 minute left" for like 12 hours but luckily I was away and just left it going in hopes it would work... and it did!)
Anyway, back on my OLD iMac, I kept all of my songs on an external drive because my internal drive was too small. So iTunes looked at that drive for the music it was playing. I turned that drive off, even disconnected it, during the migration process because I thought it was confusing it during the first attempt which took 10 hours and nothing happened.
So now it worked, finally. On my new iMac, running Mavericks, I now have two user accounts... the one that was set up when I started the computer the first time, and the new one that transferred over via Migration Assistant. No problem. I can live with that. The only thing is, I would still think the old XML files and library stuff would migrate over... but iTunes doesn't see it. When I open up iTunes, in *either* account, iTunes behaves as if it's brand new. Repeat: the old and new account on the new iMac, both, do not see an old iTunes library which IS on the old iMac. Only the music is on the external drive from what I understand.
I've done this before so I know it's possible. I remember upgrading a long time ago and got iTunes to see my old library... even though some of the music was no longer there. It just puts "!" marks wherever there is no link. I was hoping that that's what I would find when I launched iTunes, but no luck. Even connecting the old hard drive to the new Mac (via USB) doesn't make iTunes all of a sudden "see" the old library. That data doesn't seem to be there. It didn't transfer over. Did it not transfer over because the songs weren't on the internal volume? Should I have left my external hard drive on?
So.... now that I've spent almost 3 days total trying to get this to work, and everything is running... I don't want to have to start over in order to get iTunes to work. Is there a way I can just drag over some XML files or something from the old computer? I don't want to lose all of the ratings and personal notes and everything.
I should add also that I have like only four songs I've ever actually bought through iTunes. I'm still a bit old fashioned and buy CDs and rip them to Apple Lossless. So I hope it's not an authorization / reauthorization issue because I have like 1400 albums ripped.

iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

Migration Assistant from old iMac to new iMac

I have just purchased a new iMac and on startup the setup assistant allows me to move all my data and setup from my old iMac to my new iMac. However when I start although both iMacs seem to acknowledge each other the transfer does not occur.
I new iMac asks me to install sharing software which I have done successfully.
The new iMac gives me a number to enter onto the old iMac via Migration Assistant. The old iMac finds the new iMac and asks for the number. Upon entry the new iMac moves from 'Searching for computers' to 'Preparing information' but then after about 10 minutes says 'Error connecting to network'.
The new iMac is connected to my router via an ethernet cable, my old iMac is connected to the network via wireless. I don't have a firewire cable to use.
Any help appreciated.

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.
