PPC pre-install question

Dear Archlinux-community!
I'm very excited by the prospect of Archlinux continuing support for the PPC architecture, offcourse it can only work if we as users install and test thoroughly, and report our findings back.
I plan to put Archlinux on a PowerMac G4(Sawtooth), and have been reading about the procedure. One thing puzzles me though.
On the page http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _Linux_PPC
The direct link given to the isos works, and doesnt ask for a password.
However, a little further down, it says:
"When you get to the step where it asks you for the mirror address, enter:"
"ftp://www.archlinuxppc.org/"
This link, asks for a password, possibly because its the ftp used to upload data for the webserver(www. in front).
Should i indeed enter this or should i enter "ftp://archlinuxppc.org"? Will the installer also ask me for a directory, and if so, what should i enter?
As soon as i feel confident i have all the correct information, i will proceed to begin the install, but not before! Learned this lesson a long time ago
Thanks!
Krille

It will be installed depending on what engineer you get and what company he works for.
The data extension connects via IDC terminals at the NTE end, not via a RJ45 or 11 connector.
Depending on who the engineer is depends on what kind of socket/connector he puts on the end of it.
The NTE with an SSFP adds just under an extra inch to its entire width. If it's a flush mounted one it looks ok, wall mounted it stands out like a sore thumb.

  • Upgrading to  Mountain Lion Pre Install Questions

    HI:
      I will be installing Mountain Lion Next week.
    I have read through many of the turotrials and quired most of the following  I still have a few questions.
      I have some concerns in particular regarding the contents of my mail boxes and mail.
    I have backed up unto an external harddrive using time machine. When I click on the mail app I can't access it and see if the contents are there. I just get a window showing the specs.
      From what I have read all my documents applications and system info are backed up.
    1} Will the contents of Mail Inbox and personal Mail Boxes be either on the external drive or in Mail itself after I upgrade?
    2} Will I need to up grade iWork  and other Mac programs after the upgrade?
    3} Does time machines automatic backup, back up everything or do I need to do a manual back up for some thing?
    4} Will I need to load new drivers for external devices such as my printer and mouse?
    5} Will I need to reload third party soft ware such as Adobe Elements 9?
    6} Will my bookmarks and homepage be saved in Safari?
    Lot's of Questions, I have limited broad band width and will need to do most of this from a friends and internet cafes so I need to be prepared time wise and finanancialy as some things will have to be done at home and are going to push me into the next teir of my flex plan, possibly past the final teir.
    Any and all advice will be appreciated.

    1. You have a backup of your mailboxes in Time Machine that you can restore, but Mail won't modify your mailboxes during the upgrade. The first time you open Mail after the upgrade, it will upgrade your mailboxes to be able to work with that new version.
    2. If you upgrade from Snow Leopard, you should know that there's a newer iWork '09 version for Lion and Mountain Lion that make it compatible with iCloud, so you will have to install updates for iWork at least. Respecting to other apps, you have to consult it with the developer.
    3. Time Machine makes a backup of everything in your OS X partition, and it makes automatic, hourly backups. If you want, you can also make a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner or Disk Utility's Restore feature in another external disk. The advantage is that you can start the Mac from it.
    4. Theoretically, Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion use the same printer drivers. Respecting to the mouse, if you are using a third-party mouse, you have to consult with the developer if your mouse is compatible with OS X Mountain Lion.
    5. Third-party apps won't be deleted unless they aren't compatible. See > http://www.roaringapps.com
    After downloading OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend you to make a bootable copy with Lion Diskmaker, so you won't have to download OS X Mountain Lion each time you have to reinstall OS X Mountain Lion

  • Pre-install questions

    Hi,
    Will bootcamp work on any Intel Mac, or does it have to be Core 2 Duo? (Is Core Duo OK, rather than Core 2 Duo)? Does anyone know if it will work on a white Intel iMac? I read something about a firmware update. Does anyone know if a white iMac needs a firmware update, or is it just certain computers?
    Can Windows be installed on an external HD using Bootcamp? Does it need to be Firewire or USB?
    Can you install Windows and use the entire HD?
    If you install Windows using the entire HD, can you install/use OS X on an external HD? Does it need to be Firewire or is USB ok?
    How do you install Windows drivers exactly? Are they on the Leopard disc? Do you use device manager in Windows? Are there alot of know problems with the drivers?

    - boot camp should work just fine with your mac.
    - Boot camp can be installed on your External Hd disk usb or any kind. But it requires a few alterations. Go to "applications then go to utilities" Then double click on disk utility. Insert your external hard drive usb or any other. Then the icon to your external hard drive shoud apear. Click on it and click on erase. But be sure to not have any important information on you external HD or else everything will be deleted. Once you click on the erase tab and below that you should see volume. Click on it and select "Mac osx extended (journelled)" Once you have done so give it a name and click on erase. Then follow the instruction on how to set up bootcamp.
    -To install drivers just insert your Mac OS X Leopard Installation disc. If the installer doesn't pop up then go to windows explorer browse the disc and double click the setup.exe file in the boot Camp directory.
    And there you go.

  • Leopard Single User Pre-Install Question

    I have an iBook that is capable of installing Leopard, however I'm about to ditch that laptop in the recycling bin. I'm also about to get an even newer iBook running Tiger. If I put Leopard on my current iBook for now, will I not be able to put it on my new one? Is there any activation service or anything that will stop me from installing it when I get my new one? Thanks!

    A single user license means you can only use it on one Mac.
    Before disposing of your present one (there are also some folks who might like it) you should clean it. Then, you are free to install OS 10.5 on your new one.
    The proper way to "clean" a computer before selling it is to zero the hard drive. This will make all your data irretrievable.
    Steps for zeroing the drive Disk Utility:
    1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear.
    2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3. Choose the entire disk (top icon).
    4. Choose erase tab.
    5. Click on Options
    6. Choose "write zeros".
    7. Erase
    This will take a bit of time because the computer is physically writing zeros to each block.
    You should then re-install the original OS from the system disks and deliver the Mac to the new owner with the system disks that shipped with it. (If you actually dispose of it, this is of course unnecessary)

  • Database connector pre-install question

    Context, pg 23 of e10425 Oracle Identity Manager Connector Guide for DB User Mgt.pdf
    Any ideas how I can find out the service name used to create users in my Oracle DB, either that or specify one that I can use to have OIM connect to the DB for user creation/maintenance through the DB connector?
    I have my DB up and running in a VM, and v9.1.0 of OIM running on my server. I want to use OIM to provision the DB with users.
    I'm new to OIM and Oracle DBs, so any advice on this would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance,
    2Hugh

    The service name is the SID of the database.
    Assuming you can connect to the db here are some suggestions of how to find the SID How to get SID (instance name) without SYS DBA?
    Hope this helps

    Your welcome, gald to be of help
    Welcome to Apple Support Communites and to the Mac, after a little time you will be flying!
    Make sure if you have not done so yet to run software update to make sure you MBP is up to date, you can do this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left on your menu bar, and clicking on Software update.
    One other thing that will help you when posting here is to make syre your profile is up to date/correct. You have in your profile as of now your MBP model and year which is freat, but you have for your operating system, iOS(mobile devces) 7.02, which would be for and iPhone, iPad, iPod. Your MacBook Pro operates on OSX (which in your case should be 10.8.5, you can find this info under the Apple logo, About this Mac) having this info available to anyone reading a question post is very helpful for them offer advice/sugesstions that may apply to your particular OSX, as well as eliminating confusion.
    Thank you for the green check, by marking your respones it helps other users to find solutions if they are having a similar issue, if you are looking for something, after typing yor question, check the right hand side bar under "More Like This" and sometimes you may find an answer there.
    Synergy is a great thing.
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities  and enjoy your new Mac.
    One more suggestion is to purchase AppleCare it will extend your warranty to 3 years and you will also have free phone
    in-store/online for the entire period. I have done this with my families machines and found it to well woth the relativly small investment.

    Hello,
    Yes, normally holding alt key or option key will show your boot choices, but some Linux distros need a boot manager installed.

  • Question about activation key for pre-installed software after hard drive failure.

    I had a hard drive failure on my MacBook Pro last week and had it replaced by Apple.  When I restored my computer with a Time Machine backup, Office 2011 wants an activation key to start up again.  Problem is, I had Office pre-installed when I bought my MacBook by Apple.  Where do I get the activation key to get it working again?
    Thanks
    Q

    Do you still have the signons.sqlite and key3.db files from the IT setup?
    You can find the sync account password and the sync (recovery) key in the password manager on computers where a sync account with a specific e-mail address has been set up.
    Look for:
    * chrome://weave (Mozilla Services Password)
    * chrome://weave (Mozilla Services Encryption Passphrase)

  • Modprobe question (pre-install drm modules via modprobe on start-up)

    I'm trying to follow the dri building guide but archlinux doesn't have /etc/modules.conf so what do I do?
    2.6.x kernels:
    pre-install <drm module> /sbin/modprobe "-k" "agpgart"
    pre-install agpgart /sbin/modprobe "-k" "<agp chipset driver>"
    Thats what I'm trying to do. For more info go here:
    http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Buildin … 16c0c945a7
    I don't know if I should make a /etc/modules.conf or add what to what. Specific instructions would be great. Btw i have a via chipset (vt8237) and an ati radeon (9800 pro) graphics card. Thanks in advance.
    btw correct me if I'm wrong:
    /etc/rc.conf:
    LOCALE="en_US.utf8"
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    USEDIRECTISA="no"
    TIMEZONE="America/Chicago"
    KEYMAP="us"
    CONSOLEFONT=
    CONSOLEMAP=
    USECOLOR="yes"
    #not sure if a line in MODULES=(...) should be made or not
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    MODULES=(pre-install radeon /sbin/modprobe "-k" "agpgart"
    pre-install agpgart /sbin/modprobe "-k" "via_agp")
    USELVM="no"
    HOSTNAME="archie"
    eth0="eth0  192.168.0.10 netmask  255.255.255.0 broadcast  192.168.0.255"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    DAEMONS=(!syslog-ng !netfs !crond network hal fam alsa gdm)
    Now what do I put in /etc/modprobe.conf (if anything) because I'm really confused

    By default, the only modprobe.conf file that exists in a new install will be blank.  The file is mostly used to either pass specific arguments to a kernel on boot-up so these args will be then inserted into userspace and used by whatever app needs them.  EG: There are examples of this regarding Alsa and blacklisting or adding special arguments in modprobe.conf for the hda-intel on-board soundcards.
    As to what to put into that file, I can't tell you (didn't read the link yet).  I can tell you that you likely should just create it first then re-read what you're trying to do.  These lines won't go into rc.conf, that much I know:
    pre-install <drm module> /sbin/modprobe "-k" "agpgart"
    pre-install agpgart /sbin/modprobe "-k" "<agp chipset driver>"
    In all likelihood you must either insert these into the modprobe.conf file itself OR run them as root commands.  As I said, haven't read the link so I don't know for sure.  Sorry, and I don't have time to read up much more.

  • Pre-installed win 8.1 and new hard disk

    Goodevening, I have a G50-30 with win8.1 pre-installed. I didnt recived any disk, no driver disk, no software disk, no windows disk, even no windows product key.
    Anyway, I'd like to change my hdd to ssd. So i've started with trying to create a windows-boot-copy using some free software to get  the windows product key, in order to use a microsoft tool to create a boot-disk, but the product key i get results invalid, it doesnt' work. Microsoft support suggested me to ask lenovo, about my problem, so does anyone have a suggestion for me?
    Matteo

    hi Matteo,
    Welcome to the Forums.
    Can you try the following:
    1. Check this guide on how to obtain a Windows 8.1 ISO (see Option One)
    2. Follow this guide to make a bootable UEFI Win8.1 installer via DVD/USB flashdrive and use it to install Windows (the installation should be able to detect the Windows 8.1 product key in the UEFI firmware that should automatically activate Windows).
    Let me know your findings.

  • Drivers from various HP pre-installed software

    Hello,
    I Have an HP ENVY 6 1040EW Ultrabook.
    Because I had issues with my windows system I had to reïnstall windows with disks because a manual factory reset was not possible because of dammaged drivers.
    There where no disks for this particular laptop so i had to use normal windows 7 recovery disks.
    My problem:
    I recovered Windows 7 with my recovery disks and ofcourse my old pre-installed software was not on my PC.
    But I really liked HP coolsense, Beats Audio, HP connection manager and the HP service software to store safely my usernames and passwords. But I can't find the software on the HP website.
    Tnx for reading and answering my question.
    Greetings,
    Bart

    Hi, Bart:
    See if this IDT audio driver from your PC's support page installs the Beats software too.

  • My Mac wont let me update pre installed Apps.

    It tells me I have updates available for this computer but as soon as I click on update in the App store, it says You Have Updates Available for Other Accounts (please sign in to your other account to update these apps). I only have 1 Apple ID and it was used at time of purchase. The main apps in question are; Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band. I had them Pre installed during purchase. Can i fix this on my own, or am i making a trip to Apple?

    What exacly happens? With iOS 6 you do not have to enter the password to for free app updates?
    It appears you have apps purchased ffrom different accounts that need updating
    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

  • How to make a image file from Pre installed Mac osx ? "PLEASE HELP :("?

    hey guys ..Thanks u for the time.
    So i have this eMac which has crashed and i have got may hands on another eMac.. and it works
    ... the only problem is.. I can take my eMac to the working eMac to do Target Mode or any thing...
    So Help me..
    My question is .. Is there a way to make a .DMG image file from pre installed mac osx OR
    Is there a way to may a recovery disc??

    You can use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy everything from the working eMac onto the non-working eMac while the working eMac is running. If your eMac will still do target mode into the working one, you can download the above software, select the booted drive as the source drive, and your eMac's drive as the target, however it is possible this will not work.
    When you say your eMac crashed, what exactly happened?  It is possible that the hard drive in your eMac failed or is failing, so in order to get it running again you would need to replace the hard drive.  On the eMac, this repair is somewhat involved, and you have to be very careful because it exposes the CRT, which has several areas which can be extremely dangerous to touch if not properly handled.  CRTs retain a great deal of voltage, even when unplugged, sometimes for weeks, and they can give you a nasty shock if you touch them in the wrong place.
    Also keep in mind that cloning from the working computer to the non-working computer will ERASE any data that you have stored on that eMac, so if you don't have it backed up anywhere, you may want to attempt that with target mode before proceeding.
    Good luck!

  • I bought a mac mini with Lion pre-installed.  If I upgrade my mac mini to Mountain Lion, am I free to install Lion on my older macbook using the mini license?

    I currently have two macs.  A 2008 macbook which is running Snow Leopard, can run Lion, and cannot run Mountain Lion.  I also have a mac mini which came with Lion pre-installed.  I plan on upgrading my mini to Mountain Lion when it's available.  After I upgrade, it seems like I should be able to install Lion on my macbook using the license that came with my mini.
    I have found many articles about making a DVD or bootable USB drive to recover, or install Lion onto other macs.  So, I am not tied to the mac app store.  And I am not worried about how to install Lion onto the macbook.
    I have also read a few discussions about upgrading using pre-installed Lion license.  From what I've read, if someone buys Lion through the app store, they can install it on all of their macs.  But, if they have a machine the came with Lion pre-installed they can only use Lion on one machine.  However it is unclear if that license can be transferred to another machine.
    Another common answer that I have seen is, "Don't be cheap!  Just buy Lion throught the app store."  This is not about money, I'm interested in the technical challange, and the leagal question.
    Does anyone have experience with this, or opinions?

    If your machine came with Lion preinstalled, you cannot use it on another machine. It is tied to the machine it came with. You are allowed to make a one time transfer of the OS when you sell the machine as long as it remains with that machine.
    If you purchase Lion from the app store, you are free to install it on as many Macs as you own - however, if/when you sell one of those Macs, you are required to uninstall Lion as the license is not transferable and you need to reinstall the original OS.
    You can read the SLA for yourself - the link to the downloads to all licenses is here:
