PPC Server 10.4.7 -- Intel Server 10.4.7

Hello Mac community,
I just got my new iMac Core 2 Duo 17" which is intended to be my new server.
Right now we are using an iMac G4. Both systems are running with Mac OS X 10.4.7 Server, the G4 with the PPC Version, the Intel obviously with the most recent Universal version.
I really don't want to set up my new Intel server from the bottom. Is there any easy possibility to transfer all my G4 data (including users and services-preferences) to the new server?
If the new server was a PPC then I'd clone it. Maybe I can somehow upgrade my PPC system to be universal and then copy it to the Intel Mac?
Thanks in advance for your ideas.
Philipp

Although the Vtrak is attached to a UPS, I'd rather not disable flushing as the data is mission critical, Maya and After Effects projects...
These services (NFS and AFP) talk perfectly well on our Tiger servers with Tiger clients. I think it really has to do with the mix of Leopard and Tiger clients, but there must be a fix because we are locked into a mixed environment. Our Avid systems require Tiger and our graphic systems require Leopard and they both must talk nicely to the same Leopard server...
Of note: A Tiger client's performance greatly increases over AFP with the Security Update 2009-02... just no change in NFS...

  • Best practice migration 10.4.11 G4 PPC to Intel server

We are ready to upgrade our aging server to a new Intel system. I am wondering the easiest approach. The current server is not running the Universal 10.4. I don't believe there is any viable option that doesn't require lots of hands on rebuilding to move from 10.4 PPC to 10.4 Universal. If that is true, I figure the best route might be to upgrade to 10.5.1. Can I take a backup drive and do this on the Intel machine? I am thinking it will not go for this and I likely have to upgrade on a PPC system and then clone that over to the Intel. Will the format of the drive effect this? I am thinking it will in which case I am thinking my only solution is the topicdesk tool for migrating email as the rest will not be a big hassle. Thanks for any thoughts!

    Paul,
I tested this on a borrowed Intel workstation, so I was only able to run it for about a day or so. In that short time I did not encounter any problems.
The GUID Partition table is available in Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities). Select the hard disk, then the Partition tab should appear. Select the number of partitions then click options. You will see the GUID as one of the options.
You can use CCC to clone from a boot drive to another disk. Before I started cloning, I turned off all services and disconnected the network cable.
It seems like Leopard loads all the files it needs to run on an Intel box.
As long as the target disk has enough space, it does not have to match the size of the source drive. It's generally best, to erase the target disk before cloning.
One last thing, if you are trying to upgrade a production server, I would use CCC to clone the current 10.4.x set up to a disk image. That way you have something to fall back to if anything goes wrong.
Let me know how it goes.

  • G5 Server Failed howto bring users over to new intel server?

    Hi,
I have(had) a G5 acting as Open directory master managing ~200 users with networked home directory. The G5 died today, seems to be a power supply issue, and I want to get our new intel server to get these users up and running. The hard drive is fine from th G5, so I can pull that data no problem, I was just wondering what the easiest way to pull out the user data from that machine and get it into the Intel server. Do I need to get those drives in another PPC machine and export it out that way? Any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I also have this problem and I haven't had the time to find out what's wrong (not using homefolders yet).
I don't even see the LDAP server in Directory Access.
The server is setup from scratch (no user accounts imported).
    What about passwords?
They probably isn't preserved when exporting importing accounts.
I have followed an AFP548 article about how to achieve that.
It has "saved me" several times when having LDAP problems:

  • Trouble keeping Server 10.4.8 Intel working with 2003 AD.

I have been trying for a week to get a 10.4.8 MacPro server to stay bound to my 2003 AD network. Using Bombich's doc, items checked off as I go, I can get it to work briefly. Then within an hour suddenly the time zone is wrong and no clients can attach to SMB shares I have created. Quite a few error messages related to Winbindd not being able to fetch the SID for for our domain and log.smbd errors like writesocketdata: write failure. Error = Broken Pipe.
Tried rebinding to no avail. I would love to hear from someone else who can say "oh yeah it works fine for me at work". Is it a hardware (Intel) issue or Xeon, I mean I can read a whitepaper and it works for a while, then nothing. If you know of an updated how-to for an apparent idiot I'd be interested.
(NOTE: Even when the shares don't work I can still see and add AD users and groups in WGM, so I seem to be partially bound, maybe for everything except the SMB shares I need.)
    TIA for any help
    13" Macbook (Black) 2.0 GHz Intel w/ 1.25GB Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have rebuilt the machine multiple times. In several of those times I used the AD server that is the DNS server as well as the Time server, in most recent I pointed both of them to time.apple.com. But there is an odd issue with the Time zone becoming altered by some action that once you see that you know your goobered again. I can no longer get the regular OD functionality to work, the LDAP service cannot even authenticate with itself and is spewing errors. If I weren't between builds and hadn't been up all night I would have posted the console log that contained the errors. I plan on attempting to bind to the root forest domain this time instead of the child domain I have been working with. I will post back with results later. The time server is a critical piece of this working as is DNS.

  • Solaris on Intel Server

    Dear all,
Will Open solaris 10 on Intel server given below.Customer wants to host SAP Enterprise portal on this server. Can you guide me to build a better solution???
Please follow the link below to know more about the server.
    http://www.intel.com/design/servers/platforms/S7000FC4UR/index.htm

Well, to tell you the truth, I'm not sure. I can bet nobody will be, because it's rather company or software specific - you know, like I wrote before - in one company/software it'll do, in another won't be enough. I mean I can't give you precise answer: "yes, it's good" or "no, buy better".
What should you consider before buying a server?
    1. Memory in connection with application to use. Will it be Oracle server or Web server? Probably the second one. But at the address you gave there's no amount of memory selected. Basing on your explanation, maybe 30 GB of RAM for the beginning will be ok.
    2. Storage in connection with application to use. 100K users will surely require storage access, so you should think about some good and fast array for them. Regardless if it'll be Oracle or web server, the storage access for 100K of users will be a huge goal to achieve.
    3. Processors - regardless for what, the more and faster is better.
Concluding and answering your question about drivers, if I am to choose, I'd prefer dedicated Sun Server for it. Whatever you'll choose (x86 or SPARC server), consider very quick storage array for such amount of users.

  • AL11 view of Intel Server Share via QNTC ?

    Hello,
I am going to try read directory on Intel server from iSeries via QNTC.
I created on Intel server the same user and Password like iSerie.
Unfurtunatly, the procces work when I use "wrklnk" on 5250 screen, but it doesn't work wtih transaction AL11 from SAP.
Do you have some way to help us.
    Thank you.

    Hello Bruno,
which user did you create on windows and check the password ?
Was it sidofr, sidadm or sidnn ?
SAP typically uses sidnn only ...
In general, your approach works and is used by several customers.

  • Intel Server NIC I350 LACP IEEE802.3ad teaming issue

    Hello Community
I face an issue which i cannot resolve.
    I have:
Intel Server System R1208GL4DS with buildin I350 4 ports inet adapter
    OS: Windows Server 2008 R2
NIC drivers ver 18.4 (PRO set with ANS)
Data Center provides ieee802.3ad dynamic aggregation teaming connection, It uses 2 ports on my server (0 and 3)
    DC uses Cisco Nexus switches
SpanningTreeProtocol is ON and cannot be switched off by DC.
    Problem:
One of the adapters suddenly goes on standby state and doesnot pass traffic.
As the result the whole connectivity to server and to services I use stuck at that moment.
There is only one way to resolve is to restart server or restart whole team by changing the team properties.
    Nic properties:
    flow control off
    ofloads off
    rss off
    Team:
I have tried to change everything playing with any property within nic or team. No luck.
Some information from DC support of the swith config:
    # sh interface po1113 switchport
    Name: port-channel11

      Switchport: Enabled
      Switchport Monitor: Not enabled

      Operational private-vlan: none
      Unknown unicast blocked: disabled
      Unknown multicast blocked: disabled
Please advise as I'm almost stuck.
    Thank you.

May be problem on Cisco side, Cisco is very clever, could assessed network traffic as a problem and close the port. When OS is running, then NIC Teaming working fine, but when you boot up server, "BIOS not running with NIC Teaming", in this moment
may occur problem on Cisco side.
I recommend, if you use Cisco, configure NIC Teaming in LACP mode and configure your two ports on Cisco to LACP, it's better way.

  • Java Web Server 6.1 & Pooled SQL Server 2000 JDBC Connections

If anyone can shed some light on this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
I am unsuccessfully trying to use a database connnection retrieved from a pool configured using Java System Web Server 6.1 with the SQL Server 2000 JDBC Driver.
    The background:
    1. I have downloaded the SQL Server 2000 JDBC Driver and installed it on the web server.
    2. I used the Administration GUI to add the .jars(namely msbase.jar, msutil.jar, and mssqlserver.jar), to the classpath.
    3. Upon creating a simply JSP to access connection metadata using the direct connect method, ie.,
    Class.forName( com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver);
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver:// ....
I am shown a successful output of...
    JDBC Test
    Registering JDBC Driver
    driverClass: com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver loaded and registered.
    Driver Information
    Driver Name: SQLServer
    Driver Version: 2.2.0037
    Database Information
    Database Name: Microsoft SQL Server
    Database Version: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86) Dec 17 2002 14:22:05 Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: )
    Avalilable Catalogs
    catalog: master
    catalog: msdb
    catalog: Northwind
    catalog: pubs
    catalog: tempdb
    4. This tells me that the web server has access to the files necessary and the classpath is configured correctly.
    Now the fun begins...
In order to set up the JDBC Connection Pool I have done the following...
    1. I have created a web.xml file for the web-app which contains the JSP and includes the following entry
    <resource-ref>
    <res-ref-name>jdbc/devjwscp</res-ref-name>
    <res-type>javax.sql.DataSource</res-type>
    <res-auth>Container</res-auth>
    </resource-ref>
    2. I have used the "JDBC Connection Pools" link under the "Java" tab in the Administration GUI to create a connection pool.
    "Pool Name:" is "devjwscp"
"DataSource Classname" is set to "com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSource". All other properties have been left alone.
    3. I have used the "JDBC Resources" link under the "Java" tab in the Administration GUI to create a JNDI resource.
"JNDI Name" is set to "jdbc/devjwscp"
    "Status" is "true"
    "Pool Name" is "devjwscp"
The web-app JSP comes back with the following exception.
    JDBC Test
    Exception Thrown

    4. FYI my server.xml <RESOURCE> entry looks as is shown below
    <RESOURCES>
    <JDBCCONNECTIONPOOL name="devjwscp" datasourceclassname="com.microsoft.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSource" steadypoolsize="8" maxpoolsize="32" poolresizequantity="2" idletimeout="300" maxwaittime="60000" connectionvalidationrequired="off" connectionvalidationmethod="auto-commit" validationtablename="" failallconnections="off" transactionisolationlevel="read-uncommitted" isolationlevelguaranteed="off">

    </JDBCCONNECTIONPOOL>
    <JDBCRESOURCE jndiname="jdbc/devjwscp" poolname="devjwscp" enabled="on"/>
    </RESOURCES>
What gives? Do I need to add anything else to the server.xml? I know the server.xml for JWS differs from Apache. I have done an exhaustive search of the web. Many other individuals have had the same thing happen, buy none of them offered any explaination or remedy.
    Thanks in advance.

error while executing script for sharepoint online (office 365) - the remote server returned an error: (503) server unavailable.
I am creating many site collections reading records from sharepoint list using powershell in sharepoint online tenant (office 365).
Few site collections are created and then getting above error so this error record will be skipped then few succeeding record processed then again getting error.
    pattern is like:
    success
    success
    success
    success
    Error
    success
    success
    success
    success
    success
    success
    error
    success

    Hi,
As it is an online environment, to troubleshoot this issue in an easier way, I suggest you contact Office 365 Support to see if there is any useful information in
the log files in the server side:

  • Unable to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 SP1

I'm encountering error after error, after successfully installing the upgrade advisor (which took some doing) and running it with essentially no warnings/errors (the one warning was on the connection strings, as I recall -- and all of the warnings had a
    "fix after" status.
First failure involved SSRS and the inability to create the "managed account". Backed out the upgrade using http://sqldbanotes.blogspot.com/2013/10/how-to-fix-failed-in-place.html
Now the failure involves SSAS and unable to connect to analysis services with name MSSQLServerOLAPService.  That is the logical name for the service, although it shows up as just MSSQLServer when looking at it in the services list.  I tried
setting the service account to a local account as  well as to Local System -- did not make a difference, the upgrade couldn't apparently find it regardless.
Has anybody successfully done an in place upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012?

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your post and I am glad to hear that the issue is resolved. Thanks for you posting a reply to share your solution and I had marked it as answer. That way, other community members could benefit from your sharing.

    Hi Siriosus,
Indeed you do need Sharepoint Server 2013
    Enterprise for Project Server 2013.
See article below where it is mentionned:
Project Server 2013 requires the Enterprise edition of SharePoint Server 2013. Prior versions of SharePoint Server and SharePoint Foundation 2013 are not supported.

  • Disappearing disk space Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise

I've got an interesting problem with a virtual machine in our VMWare environment.  It is Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise installed.  I started out with a 60GB disk and it started running out of space, so I increased
it in VMWare and extended the partition to 100GB.  Well, that lasted for a bit and so I extended it again.  I've done this 3 or 4 times and now I've got a 160GB disk with about 2-3GB of space remaining (and it started with 10GB remaining).
WinDirStat shows 105GB of <Unknown> space being used, which is probably my issue.  However, I can't determine what this is and it keeps growing like a tapeworm.  The context menu on the <Unknown> files has all the options disabled,
so WinDirStat doesn't appear to have access to whatever the file(s) is/are.  I've performed several chkdsk /f on the C: drive and nothing bad is reported.  I don't have any restore points and am not running VSS (that I'm aware of).  The pagefile
reports as being about 4.9GB, so that's not the issue.  No large files are shown anywhere and my explorer settings are set to show me all files, including system files.
When I try to run WinDirStat with elevated permissions, it hangs and becomes unresponsive.
I've even resorted to running CCleaner to see if it found anything, but it simply found the standard temp files and such...about 1GB.
I'm pulling my hair out...and I don't have much to start with.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Russ

It appears that somehow, Microsoft Fusion Assembly binding logging was turned on and many of the temp folders located at c:\users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\InetCache\IE were filling up with hundreds of thousands of Fusion HTM log files.
This is controlled by an entry in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\ForceLog which was set to 1.  Hopefully, setting it back to zero will fix the issue.  As a result of figuring this out, I have recovered almost 80GB of disk
space occupied by the log files.
I thought WinDirStat would show me what I needed to know, but it turns out TreeSize (which I've used in the past) works much better.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 with Exchange Server 2013 SP1 Completely fresh install giving errors signing into EAC

    Hi,
I am struggling with a completely clean installation of Server 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 SP1.  I followed these steps:
    Installed Server OS
    Windows Updates
Added Active Directory Role (This is a single standalone server that would have been SBS until it was dropped)
    Added DHCP & DNS
    Added Certificate Services
Added Windows Server Update Services (WID Database & WSUS Services)
    Windows Updates
    Added Media Foundation
Added File Server Resource Manager and Work Folders
    Added Windows Server Backup
    Windows Updates
Checked all running without errors in Server Manager and performed a full bare bones backup.
    Ran Setup.exe from Exchange 2013 SP1 disc.
    Installed Pre-requisites and then rebooted
    Windows Updates
    Ran Setup.exe from Exchange 2013 SP1 disc.
    Installation completed without errors
    Rebooted
Checked all running without errors in Server Manager.
I Launch Exchange Administrative Center and get "problem with website's server certificate error" (normal on machine with self-assigned certificates).  Click Continue to Website and get:
    Windows Security dialog box:
iexplore - "The server localhost is asking for your username and password.  The server reports that it is from Digest"
however no username and password combination will work:  have tried [Administrator]; [Domain\Administrator] even created a user to no avail.
I believe the issue is somewhere in the IIS configuration because I also get the same error when trying to log into the server website from either the server or another machine on the network.
I have tried the complete installation three times now:  (full disclosure not all of the same features/roles each time).  On the first attempt I got this error immediately and on try number 2 was able to get into the EAC and created the mailboxes
but then it started giving the same error.  The above steps are try number 3.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Andy Halford
P.S. A Follow up which might be significant:  The Default Web Site is not running and will not start (it was previously running before the Exchange installation) and when I try I get the message that Another Website may be using the same port however none
of the others (Exchange Back End or WSUS Administration) are using ports 80 or 443 and I still get the error when they are both stopped.

Could you post the list of sites:
    appcmd list site
The ones listening on port 80:
    appcmd list site /bindings:http/*:80:
    And on port 443:
    appcmd list site /bindings:https/*:443:
