PPD File:Where is a support center?

I have a question about a PPD file.
Where is a support center?
thx.

A PPD file is a “PostScript Printer Description” file, an ASCII text file that contains information used by applications and/or PostScript printer drivers to customize the PostScript being generated for a specific PostScript printer model.
There is no “support center” for these files. Typically, they are generated by the manufacturer of PostScript printers and provided with the host software for same. They are also often bundled with operating system (i.e., MacOS and Windows) releases for popular devices.
Generally speaking, hacking around with PPD files is not recommended since much of the interaction between PPD files, drivers, and applications is poorly or not documented.
I have attached the official documentation of the PPD file format for your perusal.
You might want to ask us a specific question that we may be able to assist you with.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

I run a linux system and I recently had to reinstall my OS. I'm having problems getting my printer/scanner back up. I got a c7250 and I need a ppd file for it. Where can I get it?

    Hi @bmike1 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP Photosmart C7280 and needing a document for Linux. Here is a document on Driver support for Linux OS.
Linux provides the drivers and program software for the OS.
I suggest posting your inquiry on the Ubuntu Forums.

  • I want to import my bookmarks from my old hard drive to my new computer. Old hard drive is in new computer as secondary drive, can't run firefox from it. Would like to find the file where my bookmarks are stored

have looked in the old hard drive for the file where my favorites would be stored. the only file that I can find is not the latest. I did not back up my favorites on the old computer.

Bookmarks are no longer stored in an html file. Instead, they are stored in a file called '''places.sqlite''' in your '''Profile''' folder.
    # Locate the '''places.sqlite''' file in your old hard drive.
    # Copy it into the '''Profile''' folder of your new hard drive.
    # Note that since you would be overwriting the places.sqlite in your new drive, your current bookmarks/history etc would be overwritten by the ones in the old drive.

  • Can not create printer with my own ppd file

I have a printer model that is not covered in Solaris Print Manager.
I downloaded a foomatic-PPD file. Followed the steps (from Solaris 10 administration guide) to add printer. (lpfilter -f $ name -F $ filter didn't succeed, so I manually did lpfilter -f foomatic -F foomatic.fd)
After printer is added, and it's idle, I tried to print a job, but it says:
UX:lp: ERROR: The LP print service could not read your request file
To fix: see if the spooling file system is full.
I have also tried to add a new entry in /usr/lib/lp/model/ppd/ppdcache and the new entry points to my ppd file.
Add printer through Soloaris print manager, I got the exact same message.
    Any tips?

printer paper is idle. enabled since Feb 28 11:21 2004...

I haven't played with this myself, but from looking at the documentation and what you have done:
    1. is this a locally attached printer (serial port , usb, etc.) or a network printer? You are using standard_foomatic that is for locally attached printers, but your description seems to indicate that the printer is on the network. If it's a network printer, then the netstandard_foomatic script should be used.
    2. Is the content type of postscript appropriate for this printer? The docs use that but that may not be correct. Is the Optra E312 a postscript printer?
    3. althought the built-in ppd files are in the .gz format (and unzipped as needed), the docs indicate that the "home brewed" ppds should be just plain .ppd.
Not sure if any of this is relevant, but that's my 2 cents.

  • HP Deskjet F4440 not printing from cups, do I need ppd? Where can I find it?

    Hello!,
I am trying to get my HP Deskjet F4440 connected to my linux server through the use of "cups". I am using Tiny Core Linux.
    Linux box 3.16.6-tinycore #777 SMP i686 GNU/Linux
I have installed and configured cups.tcz. When I visit the cups admin page at 'localhost:631' and go to 'add a new printer', the HP Deskjet shows up and it guides me through the rest of the process. At one point it asks what make and model the printer is for what I assume is for drivers, or it asks for a ppd file.
I have tried searching for a PPD file for my printer but was unable to find it so I used what was avaialble... I selected 'HP' as the make and 'HP Deskjet series (en)' as the model. They did not have my model but I assumed it fell under this.
The printer gets added and shows up under the 'Printer' tab of cups. I set the printer to server default and clicked 'Print test page'.
Do I need a PPD file? How can I get this printer working?
It shows the print started with either 21% or 25% sometimes and then disapears. No error messages. No printed pages or activity from the printer.

    Hi @Flawd009,
I can honestly say, I do not know the answer to your question, but perhaps I can help you find it.
I wonder if the following information would be helpful; OpenPrinting CUPS Quick Start.
If not, please remember I am out of my support boundaries and thought it was better to try and fail than not try at all

  • How do you locate the file where iPhoto library is kept? I moved iPhoto library from hard drive to external dedicated photo drive.

I am trying to restore some elements of my iPhoto library using time machine.
Apple instructions call for locating the file where iPhoto library is kept, and tells you where it is on your hard drive. But I've recently moved my iPhoto library to a dedicated external hard drive, and copied my i photo library there. when i click on it, all the photos are there, but it's an iPhoto library, not a file.
When I go into time machine and click on the date i would like to enter, most of my apps have a circle with a line through it, unaccessible. So: a related question, how would i retrieve a photo file from time machine's previous backup? thank you.

    Thank you!
I am trying to retrieve photo uploads from my Android phone. When I last updated my OS, most of these vaporized, leaving only thumbnails. I have had two lengthy sessions with Apple phone support, but still haven't solved the problem.
Apparently I can't go back to July '14 iPhoto in time machine and browse files; i have to copy the entire library.
Which I just did, taking 2 hours.
In order to open the iPhoto library from July '14, I had to first update iPhoto.
When I went into the files, the same problem existed -- photo files gone, only thumbnails there. So now I'm thinking that it's the update that was the problem. This scares me to death, because when we're asked to update, we don't get a menu of preferences to make sure something has been unchecked, like the copy option i had enabled when opening photo files from my phone, which i store in a dropbox folder.
No one at Apple could tell me why this happened, so I have no idea how to prevent it from happening in the future.
That's why I'm trying to create better backups...but i can't figure out deja vu, because it won't open and sync the iPhoto library folder -- it wants me to find the file, and i don't know where it is on the external dedicated photo drive.
I realize this is about six issues, not one. But I'm really appreciative of any help i can get!

I do not have the Driver folder in this folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support like it says I should and my Apple Iphone appears in Portable Devices only, not in Universal devices. I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. My Iphone is still not recognized by Itunes when I plug it in. I can see my photos in the internal storage folder on my Windows 7 system though. So I know my PC sees the device. The Iphoneis an Iphone 4 with IOS 6 installed. It was working fine until I had to reinstall my Windows system. Now Itunes does not see it. I've uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled it (64bit) to no avail. Where is the Driver folder article TS1538 talks about?

  • Mavericks Server; smbd: File system does not support 0x0, time/size attrs

So I recently installed a Mac Mini with Mavericks and Server 3.2.2 in the main office of my company and everything has been going well, minus a few expected bugs, until recently. Starting last week we've been experiencing random intervals where File Sharing stopped working altogether, and I'd been able to reboot and get it running again. Unfortunately, as I'm the Systems and Server Admin, I've been too busy to look at the logs until now (following the degradation of one of the drives in our DAT-Optic RAID system, I figured it was time to make it a priority), and I'm seeing dozens of entries in the system logs regarding the process smbd with file system does not support errors.

As far as I can tell, nothing else has changed in our system except for the fact that one of the drives died and was rebuilt as of yesterday (these smbd problems extend to last week shortly after I updated to 3.2.2 I believe). Any help would be much appreciated. I would normally first attempt a repair permissions to see if the issue is related to a bad plist somewhere but the last time we did that, our ACLs were duplicated across our file share and often incorrectly. I'm not sure if it's just me but the last Mac Server software I used was Snow Leopard Server (when it was still a full OS version) and it was infinitely more stable than what I've experienced thus far with Server 3. Anyway, I appreciate any help/advice that can be given and I apologize for the rant.

Been getting the same errors for a while.

  • Help printing seperations / PPD files

    Hello,
I have created a design in illustrator - which I want to print as colour seperations to use as a screen printing design.
However, when I go to the output section of the print dialogue, the Mode section is greyed out - and I believe this is where I need to select the seperations I am after.
There are also no drop downs for PPD - so I don't know whether I need to load one (I have a Canon ip4300, have looked for a PPD file but not found one) or alter a setting in Illustrator?
Any help is welcomed -  really would like to be able to use Illustrator for printing my designs off!!!
    Thank you.

    Hi Monika,
Yes, after much searching around I did find the PPD file in the "Library - Printer - Content - Resources" section - but even though it is there - if I have my printer chosen as I normally would to print a full colour image, I do not have the PPD drop down highlighted , nor in the output - can I change that.
Does this file need to be located somewhere special for CS5 to recognise it?
    Thanks for the help.
