PPI setting in LR3 external editing option

what is the use and significance of the ppi setting (default 240) in the external editing section in LR3? what is the recommended value / how can it be derived?
Thanks,

Actually, I would disagree...
A raw file will have "native" pixel dimension (x number of pixels by x number of pixels) but not have a pixel resolution and dimension until you specify it. Since you are opening an image from Lightroom, where really only the pixel density matters, into Photoshop where resolution and dimension do matter, I would suggest setting a resolution that gives you the most useful PPI resolution for your needs. 240 PPI will give you a larger set of dimensions while being under the suggested resolution needed for halftone reproduction (which is 300 PPI). Printing to a pro quality inkjet printer is often done at 360 PPI (or above). A higher PPI will result in the image dimensions being smaller...
So, you need to decide what purposes you open images into Photoshop and settle on a resolution settings that is useful for your purpose.

  • HELP - Issues with external edit in lightroom cc

Hi!  I'm relatively new to lightroom and this was working but now isn't & on both of my mac computers so I'm stumped.
I have preferences set to open external edits as tiff in photoshop cc.
When I right click a jpg & choose "edit" - it doesn't matter which of the 3 options I choose lightroom creates a second jpg and opens it in photoshop... when I make changes & go to exit - it brings up a save as box.... I can either hunt for the jpg & lose my photoshop data (end photo is right obviously) or save as psd/tiff but then I have to import it back into lightroom....
I just processed a whole bunch of mixed raw/jpg photos & I swear this worked for all of them.  This is a jpg not a raw but that's the only difference & I am pretty sure I had jpg's in the last bunch I edited.
    So frustrated!
Attaching my external edit preference box & also a view of the file lightroom creates when I try to edit in photoshop.

I suggest trying the simplest fix first, which is to close all applications, shut down your system OS. Restart the system, reopen LR and PS, and try it again.
If the problem persists reset LR's Preferences file. Rename it 'com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist.OLD' instead of deleting the file.
How do I reset Lightroom's Preferences? - The Lightroom Queen
If still no change try resetting PS's Preferences file by renaming the same as suggested above 'Adobe Photoshop CC Prefs.psp.OLD.'
    Photoshop preference
    Filename
    Path
    General settings
    Adobe Photoshop CC Prefs.psp
    Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CC Settings
You can easily restore both original Preferences file if the issue isn't fixed by deleting the new file and removing .OLD from the original file.

  • Which option do you use? PSD or TIFF for external edits?

I'd like to hear why you use PSD or TIFF for external edits. Why do you choose one over the other? Do you wish you had a choice, as in an option, when you click on Edit in External Editor?

I did a little reading on this and this is what I have found so far:
Deke McClelland in Adobe Photoshop CS2 one-on-one states:
"TIFF is a wonderful format to use when handing off CMYK files because it enjoys wide support and prints without incident."
He also states "Photoshop also lets you save layers to the TIFF and PDF formats, but where multilayer compositions are concerned, the native PSD Format enjoys wider support among other imaging applications (including, older versions of Photoshop itself)."
    Classroom In A Book states:
"TIFF is used to exchange files between applications and computer platforms. TIFF is a flexible format supported by virtually all pain, image-editing, and page-layout applications. Also, virtually all destop scanners can produce TIFF images.
"PSE is the default file format. Because of the tight integration between Adobe products, other Adobe applications such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe GoLive can directly import PSD files and preserve many Photoshop features.
Apple Aperture 1.5 by Mike Cuenca:
"PSD: The Photoshop proprietary format is widely used by digital imaging professionals because it supports the storage of alpha channels and layers. Aperture will preserve this extra data byt will not display the layers or channels. PSD files are not compressed, and although they are intended for use within Photoshop, they are becoming more widely accepted outside Photoshop."
"TIFF: The TIFF format is the recommended format for high quality storage of master images. It has a loss-less compression method that can be applied, but more often the images are stored uncompressed. The TIFF format is also the most widely used format for images destined to be printed on a printing press."
Maybe some of this will help

  • LR3: Adjustment brush 'edit' option unavailable

I just downloaded a trial of Lightroom 3. Im trying to edit photos in RAW and for some reason under the adjustment brush and graduated filter the 'edit' option is unavailable. Do i need to transfer files to JPEG? Help?!?!!

Before an adjustment is made with the graduated filter or adjustment brush in only option is "new", edit is greyed out.  After you have made an adjustment you then have the choice when it is reopened to make a new adjustment( A second one) or edit any previous ones, the edit button will now be active since an adjustment exists already. If you want to edit the previous adjustment choose edit and click the gray pin for that adjustment on your image.  To make sure pins are visible make sure the toolbar below the image is showing (Keyboard shortcut T) and that "Show edit pins" in the lower right of the toolbar is set to any choice but "never" or pins from previous adjustments won't be visible. I leave it set to always, then as long as the adjustment tool is open the pins will show .

  • Why can't I access external edit from LR4 (still OK in LR3)

I just upgraded from LR3 to LR4 and find that external editing does not work (Develop Module - Photo - Edit In). Nothing happens, no virtual copy is created and the externa; application does not launch. I have checked the external edit setup in LR Preferences and these are correct.
LR3 however continues to work correctly - saving a tiff and opening the external editor.
Is this a bug in LR4?

  • Custom Camera Profile Disables External Editing?

I'm using Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS5.  The problem is that if I apply a custom camera color profile created by X-Rite Passport Color Checker, I can no longer use an external editor, such as Photoshop, to edit my photos.  Before I apply the custom profile, the external editor function works just fine.  If I apply a custom profile in the Camera Calibration panel, then the ability to use external editors no longer works.  There is no error message, but nothing happens when I try to edit in an external editor.  If I go back and turn off the custom profile and go back to Adobe Standard, then the external editor function works again.  What is going on?  Is there a way to make it possible to apply a custom profile in Camera Calibration and still be able to use the external editors?

A suggestion: it sometimes happens that the main "edit in PS" function gets.. a bit confused. I agree with the other posters that it's critical which program is to render your image to an editable state (ACR, or LR)... which also means, whether PS is going to simply open up an already-saved file from disk, or be passed instructions to have ACR make it an unsaved image in memory.
Perhaps there is some issue with ACR seeing the folder where Passport is saving its special camera colour profiles via LR - the more standard ones are located in a structure shared by both programs, the same as with lens profiles. This will only be a difficulty, if it is ACR which is trying to do the job of rendering the image.
Just to clarify: normally when we say LR version such-and-such is compatible with ACR version such-and-such, we are assuming that the latest available Process Version is being used within Lightroom. For any individual image which happens to be set to an earlier Process Version, the compatibility with ACR operates, as if an earlier version of LR was being used. So (for example) one image using PV 2012 would get necessarily rendered by LR when you selected "Edit in PS" with PS CS5, because that is known not to support PV2012. But another image using PV2010 might get sent directly to CS5's ACR within the same setup (provided not earlier than 6.7), without giving the option, since that version of ACR IS known to support that generation of image adjustments.
To troubleshoot whether external editing is or is not possible, it can be helpful to set up Photoshop manually as a LR external editing preset (I find this useful anyway). This is done within the lower, "additional" part of the External editing tab in LR Preferences. By browsing direct to the Photoshop executable, you can specify whether 32-bit or 64-bit, also set up the bitdepth and colourspace, and explicity name that. When this name is then selected against an image from the "Edit in..." context menu, it is definitely Lightroom that renders the image - you can be sure that ACR is not involved.
If Lightroom cannot render an image under such an external editing preset, save it to disk / add a new imported image version, and have PS open that, when a {Passport profile is selected - but those things can happen when (say) Adobe Standard is selected, then AFAICT that narrows down on LR's ability to use the profile which Passport has made. I'd still have expected some kind of a warning message.
Even if PS was for some reason unable to open the image, but LR had definitely been the one told to render it - I would not expect to have "nothing" happen. I would expect to see a new image version in LR stacked with the original - named (by default) either [Imagename]-edit.tiff or [imagename]-edit.psd - which looked exactly the same as the current LR edits, only hard-rendered into a flat pixel file.

  • Problem returning image to LR3 after edit in PS CS5.  Help!

After adjustment in LR3, I edit in PS (CS5). I finish with "save" but image does not return to LR3. I do find it in my hard drive  Photo folder. Then it's a PIA to re import to LR3 for printing.
Very frustrating, Can someone help this old guy?

The copy in CS5 does not include "Edit".
Well, that might be the problem.
First, why isn't there a "EDIT" suffix? Did you change that option on purpose?
Lightroom might be importing your Tiff as a sidecar to the original. To confirm this, you can check the Metadata panel, to see what the Sidecar field contains. If it has a tiff in there - that's the problem.
Dorin, I do not seem to be able to find a "Sidecar" field within my Metadata panel.  Is this something I have to set up somehow.  All of the examples that I have seen of using CS5 from LR make no mention of this feature, consequently, I was unaware of it. I assume this displays somehow within the Library module?  Is there something that should be turned on, or off, for this to happen.  I would appreciate your expanding on your explanation.  Thanks.

a friend of mine has the same problem - also updated from LR3 to LR4, external editor: elements 10
Which process version is the image you're trying to edit externally?
You right-click (I'm assuming PC, can't help Macs), there should be a context menu option "Edit in".  You choose that, and there's an option for Elements 10 or not?
If so, what happens when you select it?  Do you get any further message?
If not, you may have to go to Edit menu, preferences, External Editing tab and create a preset for Elements.  In the "Additional External Editor" area, click "Choose" and navigate to wherever Elements is on your machine and you can create a new external editor.

  • External editing resolution

What external editing resolution should I be using when editing a photo in CS5?
I am assuming the larger the resolution the bigger the potential print size without losing image data.  Does somebody have a link or explanation for a resolution to print size ratio?
    Thanks for the help.

    Because it has to.
This number affects how the picture is printed on paper. Say, you files is 1000 px wide.
(A). If you set the resolution to 100 ppi, it will be printed 10 inch wide on paper (1000 / 100 = 10).
(B). If you set the resolution to 240 ppi, it will be printed 4.16 inch wide on paper (1000 / 240 = 4.16).
Note that the amount of details in the files itself stays the same - it will be 1000 px wide in both cases. But in case (A) it larger and blurrier (240ppi), while in case (B) it's smaller but sharper (100ppi).

  • Setting up an external drive before installing Leopard

I have just purchased a new MacBook and a stand alone version of Leopard to put on my iBook. I have an OWC external drive as well. I want to set up the external so that I can have a bootable copy of Tiger and OS9 (my kids need OS9 to run some of their games) The external is configured as MacOS extended right now with no partitions. I am guessing that I should partition this drive with four partitions? One for Tiger, one for OS9, one for Time Machine, and one for other data, music, movies, documents, etc. My question is what would be good sizes for these partitions? Also if I use Carbon Copy to clone my existing OS, is the clone bootable or do I have to do something else to make it bootable? Will it save all my current files too?
I have been reading the discussions group for several hours trying to figure out what steps to take to install Leopard on my iBook so it has the least amount of problems and this is what I have come up with.
    1. repair permissions, run Apple Hardware Test, back up my current OS and any other documents, files, etc. using Carbon Copy
    2. Install Leopard using Archive and Install option, with save network preferences box checked.
    3. repair permissions again after install
    4. enjoy Leopard, (hopefully)
    Have I left anything out?
thanks in advance for everyone's help.
    Jennifer

I believe you can have OS 9 on the same partition as Tiger, and use "classic" to run the kid's games under Tiger. That will prevent you from wasting disk space with to many partitions. I would definitely recommend putting Time Machine on its own dedicated partition as you indicated.
OS 9 can be installed on a single gigabyte. I'd not install OS X on less than 10GB (this would be for Tiger...and I'm assuming it wont be heavily used beyond running the OS 9 games in classic mode). I'd then put as much as you think you can into the Time Machine volume....as a rule of thumb, having the TM volume be double your Leopard installation is plenty, but it really depends on your uses (file size, frequency of creation/editing, etc).
The clone will be bootable if you restore it to a working partition. As a clone, it will "clone" everything on your drive...files and system...everything.
Those install steps seem right to me. The only thing I'd suggest is to give Leopard a "break-in" period where you set up all the system preferences the way you want and let it run (boot it up and shut it down a few times). Run all the applicaitons that came with it (textedit, photobooth, etc) and see if then open and behave corretly. Then move on to third-party applications you've installed and be sure they work as well. When all that's done and things seem to be ok, migrate your files back to the drive if it's needed, though in the archive and install there's teh option to preserve user data, and this will do the copying for you.
One potential problem is if programs behave funky and settings dont get saved, etc., you might have corrupt preference files, in which case try removing the preference files from your ~/Library/Preferences/ folder for the affected applications.
    Hope it goes well!

  • Lightroom 5.4. Edit options are greyed out. I tried reset warnings already.

    Hi,
I just added a bigger harddrive and reinstalled Lightroom 5.4.
Now,  2 of 3 edit options are greyed out.
No access to plug-ins or external editors for original files.(NEF's)
    I tried reset warnings already.

Yes, Nikon transfer was used. From a D800, But that was a year ago.
    It has been working fine.
Before I upgraded to 5.4 I had this problem.
When I upgraded to a larger harddrive and re-installed 5.4 the access was limited to only "Copy with Lightroom adjustments."
Last night it started working, I had full access!
But, today it won't work on the same image/plug-ins.
    the NIK Collection for example.
    This effecting ALL RAW files! D100, D90, D3100, D7000, D800.
My Laptop is doing it now, too!!!
I installed DNG Converter 8.4 with No Difference. NO RAW EDITS.
I can't send a NEF to DXO Optics Pro 9, or anything else!

iCloud has my old Apple ID and is prompting for a password, but I want to put in the new id, I can't because it is grey and there is no edit option.  I'm prompted for a password to an account that doesn't exist.  Anyone know what I can do to fix this or why this is happening.?  I had no issue putting in my new Apple ID everywhere else, I could sign out of the old and inactive account and then sign back in using my new and proper one.  However, after the update to 7.3 it did a whole welcome to yr iPad and a set up thing and it went to set up iCloud and had my old Apple ID in grey where I can't change or edit it, it wants the password, when I put in the old password, it say yr Apple ID is incorrect but yet it won't let me change it??????? Anyone???

Sign out and back into your apple id from Settings>iTunes and App stores>(Your apple ID)>Sign Out and then sign in again with the new address. Close app store from running in the background (or restart the phone if your unsure how to do this). If when trying to update any apps they are still asking for the old apple ID, delete and re-install those apps.

I have my iPhoto set to an external drive, when it was in use the usb disconected as i was moving my mac air, when i re-conected a message said (your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable).
I have tried shutting it down and then re opening iPhoto but get the same message.
The reason for the external drive was there was not enough room on my hard drive, I have around 7000 photos on it.
    is there a simple fix?
    Regards

    These are your options:
    1. Restore the iPhoto library from the most recent backup that predates the issue.
Advantages: Always works, if library damage is causing the problem and the backup is intact.
Disadvantages: Impossible if you don't have a backup. All changes made since the backup are lost.
    2. Repair or rebuild the library. Be sure to back it up first.
Advantages: May solve the problem with no loss of data.
Disadvantages: May fail. May take a long time if the library is large.
    3. Scavenge the library with a third-party application called "iPhoto Library Manager," which you can find in a web search. From the application's menu bar (not the iPhoto menu bar), select Library ▹ Rebuild.
Advantages: All images and albums should be preserved.
Disadvantages: All books, calendars, and slideshows will be lost.
