PPoe to IP address

My ISP installed a modem at my home. It's set up to connect via PtP (user name and password). With my laptop plugged directly into the ISP modem I don't have a problem, but when I try hooking up a WRT54GS wireless router I can't connect with my other computers or with my laptop. I want to take the ISP signal and plug it into the Internet port on the Linksys router. Then I need to connect all my other computers via the 1-4 ports with the IP address of my existing network. I also need to connect wirelessly. I tryed to change all the settings that I think should work with no luck. Can you point me in the right direction? Thank you much.

double check that you have the set-up in the router with the correct address for your modem.

  • I have time capsule and I am unable to connect to the internet using static public IP

I have been using my Time Capsule on my company network for some time.
Recently I removed the time capsule and connected the TC  Wan port directly to the firewall.  We have got block of static IPs provided to us from our ISP.
Im confused in filling up the internet tap on the Airport Utility (Lion Version)
If Im using a static public IP to connect to the internet should I use
    Static, DHCP or PPoe?
IP Address: is this the IP address of the public IP address given to Us from ISP?
    Subnetmask. ..no problem
Router Address: what should I type here: IP address of my firewall or my ISP's GateWay IP?
    DNS servrs are clear...
    Please guide me.

Normally you would just set this up with dhcp to the firewall.. if the firewall is setup correctly it will simply pass you one of the block of static IP addresses.. if it doesn't or get a NAT address you should be able to allocate a static IP to the TC in the firewall to its MAC address.
I am not sure that the static IP will work if you just type it in.
If you want to have a go..
If Im using a static public IP to connect to the internet should I use
    Static, DHCP or PPoe?
Try static only if dhcp doesn't work because the firewall is not setup.
IP Address: is this the IP address of the public IP address given to Us from ISP?
Yes, a free IP from the block.
Router Address: what should I type here: IP address of my firewall or my ISP's GateWay IP?
Either should work if the firewall is setup correctly.. otherwise just try ISP gateway.

  • Self Assigned IP Addresses amber lights and no internet HELP!

Ok bear with me as I try to explain my prediciment!
I have an imac G5 with a Airport Extreme card properly connected and currently at full signal! The problem I'm having is that when i click safari (or IE) it doesn't load up any pages and a littke box pops up saying that it cannot find the server! so I go to network settings in system preferences and check the network status. I have an amber light and it says "airport connected to (my server) IP address self assigned your mac may not be able to connect to the internet" the problem is it is not self assigned it is done through DHCP.
I have had internet working perfectly at another house and it has worke don the odd occasion for a couple of days here so I don't think its a fault card (as i say it picks up a signal fine). I have tried putting in all info in manually but this has not helped (although on 1 occasion it did). I have baffeled the university technician with this problem. Im currently using ethernet to connect but this is no good as I need the computer in my bedroom and not the dining room (student accomodation) if you have any suggestions or have experienced this problem yourselves i would be delighted to hear of any answers and suggestions!

    Hi,
Duane is right in that if ACL's (access control lists) are set on the wireless access point, (as they are in my school) you will need your mac address of your airport card to add to the router.
Here's what I would do.... Open up Network Prefs in the System Prefs app. Create a "New" location and name it whatever you want ("Wireless at Home"). In the "Show" drop down menu, select airport. You should see 5 tabs in the airport window. Airport, TCP/IP, PPoE, Appletalk and Proxies. Click the airport tab and select automatically where it asks you what default network you want to join. You'll also find your mac address for your airport card in that pane. Next, click on TCP/IP and select DHCP from the IPv4: drop down menu, make sure no information is showing in this window. In other words, no numbers in DHCP or DNS servers, etc. If it's blank and ready to go, hit apply. The router should then hand off an IP address. Close system prefs and look in the menu on the upper right hand corner of your screen (by the date and time). See the airport fan? Does it have black bars through it? Or are they grey? Or, does it just look like a blank semicircle (airport is not turned on). If you don't see this menu, go back to network prefs and open the new location you've just made and go back to the airport tab. There is a check box in there that says, show airport status in menu bar. Turn that on. Now, go back to the menu and if the bars are grey, click on the fan and see if your network is listed there. Click on that to join. You have made a new location with fresh DHCP settings and told your airport card to connect automatically to whatever network is available.

  • Cannot find PPoE host, can connect to router but not internet

I've been having trouble since I tried using the router. At first, I had no security, then I set up the security and couldn't connect to the router. That finally solved, sometimes when trying to connect to the router, I get the message cannot find PPoE host. But, my connection continues to show that it is strong in the bar at the top.
So, I try to get on the internet -- Safari, Firefox -- no go.
I run network diagnostics and the first three settings are lit, but the ISP, Internet and Server all show as failed.
I'm connecting via airport and a linksys router.
    Thanks for any help

You'll have to go into your router's settings and make sure they're correct. When you connect to the internet through a router, the router has to be set up with the appropriate IP information (like setting it for PPPoE). If you have set your router up properly, then all you have to do is connect your Mac to it, either wirelessly or over ethernet, and it should auto-configure if you have your Network settings on "DHCP" (not the manual DHCP, though). You will get an IP address assigned by your router if it worked.
Hope that helps. Networking is always confusing.

  • AE ppoe mode in AE only allows macbook pro and iMac to connect to internet but not ipad

I just upgraded to  20MB DSL line and got a new Qwest Q1000 modem connected to an A Extreme.
Since Qwest now has PPPoE, I set the Q1000 modem to bridge mode and turned off Wifi.
Then I Set the AEx router to ppoe mode, entered my username and password from Qwest and all is well with all lights green.
But... only my imac and macbook pro connect to the internet.  My ipad, my wife's macbook and an ipod touch cannot connect.
According the Airport Utility, all these devices are detected by the wifi network and they have their own  unique IPs provided by the AEx router (in pppoe mode)   10.0.1.7,   10.0.1.9 and so forth, no ip conflicts detected, all the lights green with full access to the internet. Again, only  my iMac and my macbook pro actually connect to the internet at full speed.
Does any one know why some devices connect to the internet while others are not able to...
Again, no errors detected anywhere, all modem and router lights green.
    Any help is welcomed.

Thanks for the reply.  Your suggestion did not work.  Apparently there is an issue with DNS addresses.
The Airport Extreme in pppoe mode  sets the router and DNS addresses to be the same 10.0.1.1.  Some devices (like my macbook pro and iMac) ignore this DNS value or use a different  (unknown) and then they connect to the internet perfectly.  But the devices (ipads and ipods) aquire and set both values (Router and DNS) to be the same, (10.0.1.1 and 10,0.1.1) wont connect to the internet until I manually  changed the DNS address in the DNS field.
Question: are these two values supposed to be the same/different/ in both fields in the AExt in pppoe mode?
    Thanks

  • DHCP or PPOE?

Am trying to reconnect my laptop to my wireless network via WRT54G.  My desktops are working the router set on PPOE but my laptop has a 165 IP address.  When I try ipconfig/renew it says media is disconnected, unable to contact your DHCP server.  If I go back into the router configuration and change it to DHCP is that all I have to do or will that change my 2 desktops ability to connect to the internet?  I'm pretty wireless illiterate so am apprehensive to make too many changes.  Any help?

  • Cisco Router 886 PPoE Passthrough

    Hello,
i have a Cisco Router 886 which is working fine with ppoe.
I want to establish a second ppoe connection via the 886 ethernet port.
The ppoe connections should be established via one dsl line.
This ethernet port is connected to another Router with his own ppoe credentials.
    Is our construct supported?
Please help me to find the proper configuration if it is supported.
According to my understanding the ethernet port must be configured to ppoe passthrough.
    Thanks in advance

  • WRT610N PPoE issues ?!

Hi Forum, Last week I purchased Linksys WRT610N router and Draytek Vigor 110 ADSL modem combo. My intention was to use the Vigor110 as PPoE to PPoA bridge for Linksys. Now, only problem is that for the life of me I can't make it work. Linksys PPoE client Internet configuration is rather straightforward (and I have a good technical background btw) ... but it simply won't pick up the ADSL connection and IP address from Vigor110. After trying to connect, it simply throws up the error "unable to obtain the IP address from PPoE server" ... something like that. Are there any know problems when pairing Linksys WRT610N and Vigor110 modem ? or even worst option when using PPoE with WRt610N in general. Also, when Vigor110 modem is connected directly to the PC ... everything is working just fine via Windows native PPoE client (so modem is OK). Thx! I'm from UK btw and my provider is UKONLINE.

Well ... it's good to know that I'm not the only one!
Anyway, I had a chat with my friend yesterday and we came to conclusion that fact that router is not supporting PPoA is rather "normal" as it's not ATM device (it's not modem enabled) and the comments from the "SPAWN 06" above are definitely misleading. Router should be able to bridge the modem PPoA connection over PPoE ... otherwise Linksys PPoE implementation doesn't make sense at all.
I really hope that Linksys would fix PPoE ... as I just want hand over of the unmolested ADSL traffic to the router (from the ADSL ethernet modem). Nothing more, nothing less. Additionally, I'm getting much better connection rate with Draytek Vigor110 then with the AM200 itself and I don't need any traffic shaping from the AM200 in the connection chain. Draytek is just pure Ethernet ADSL modem ... so I'm really keen to use it.
Otherwise WRT610N is a good router. On the wireless end, I'm getting over 10MB/s of traffic burst (5GHz band) and that's in best case FastEthernet cable speed. Quite pleased.

  • Help with VPN (DSL/PPoE)

    Here is my network:
Speedstream 4200 Modem (DSL over PPoE) -> Cisco RV220w
I have created a QuickVPN client on the RV220w but when I use the public facing IP address and try to connect using these credentials, I just get a 'remote host cannot be reached' type of error. Is anyone familiar with the Speedstream 4200 modem? Do I need to change it to BRIDGE mode or change something so that it'll work with the RV220?

The modem is now in BRIDGE mode so the RV220w now has the public IP. I've followed the router admin guide to add a QuickVPN client and used the QuickVPN client software on an XP machine outside of the network to try and connect. I get the usual "failed to establish a connection" error message. And yes, I've disabled the Windows firewall on this machine.
I really need someone to hand hold me to get this set up, or at least point me to some pretty detailed walkthroughs online.
    Can anyone help?

  • Need a second Ethernet port from PPoE  Modem

I am on AT&T's sbcglobal.net PPoE network with my G5. I want to connect my ibook by ethernet to this modem that has one ethernet output. I bought an ethernet switch, connected the output from the modem to one of the switch ports, and each computer to other ports.
i can get online with either computer but only one at a time. Do I have to call AT&T and get anothe rIP address assigned?

I originally had a Linksys that quit and had another old one I couldn't get to work on my DSL.
The guy at the computer store told me the switch was the easy way to get a second connection if I didn't want to network, so that was were I was coming from.
I was curious why this was not working and if the reason was because I would have to have 2 IPs from the modem or if I didn't understand the switch.
I will probably go get a new router, but I see where a lot of server providers are providing modems with a built-in router, so I looking at this possibility.
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • MAC Address =ipv6?

Hello. My system administrator needs the Media Access Control address for my PowerBook G4 so I can join their wireless network.
When I checked the Apple documentation for how to find my Media Access Control (MAC) address (System Preferences>Network>Airport>TCP/IP), it seems to the long alpha-numeric series that that appears next to IPv6 Address. Is IPv6 the term Apple uses for MAC? Thanks.

    Hi--
The MAC address is not the same as the IPv6 Address. The MAC address for Airport is actually what they call the "Airport ID". When you're looking at the Airport settings, you'll see 5 tabs: "AirPort", "TCP/IP", "PPoE", "AppleTalk", "Proxies". It's under the "AirPort" tab, the one to the left of "TCP/IP".

  • WRT310n keeps disconnecting using PPoE

About 3 months ago I purchased a brand new Linksys wrt310n, set it all up and working find on DSL using PPoE. I upgraded the firmware to latest version more than a month ago, the router is being working fine all along. All of the sudden, one Sunday afternoon the router keeps on connecting to my ISP with the same PPoE settings I had there originally, then I get 2 type of issues, sometimes the router will come back and say it cannot get an IP Address, but most times it will try to authenticate using its PPoE settings, then it gets connected, stays connected for about 5 minutes and during those 5 minutes when I browse the web, the responses are very very very slow and pages don't display, eventually the connection disconnects and keeps retying, the PPoE settings keeps disconnecting. I called my ISP and their end works fine, when I connect a computer directly to the DSL modem and setup the same PPoE settings, the computer works fine and I can browse. Can someone please tell me what's going on with my router? Also if someone out there knows, what's the warranty on these devices? Remember this device is only 3 months old, I understand chances of breaking and all of that as technology is like that, but really how robust are these devices? Anyway back to my issue, can you help?

Make sure that the "Keep Alive" option is checked on the setup page of the router....Also,as you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 30-35 seconds, power cycle it and re-configure the router from scratch.

  • Can no longer enter data in the address bar {url Bar}, it correctly follows data from google search bar. It was a 1 month old installation so not a lot of complications

I was not adding anything to Firefox. I Refused tool bars embedded in several application installs on this new computer. Was working fine. Then had a problem with Google search, restored default values and re-tooled Firefox. At this point all worked fine. Then my url, address bar changed color to the same color as the program shell, a grey brown as opposed to the white it was before. With the change in color it no longer allows me to change the data showing in the bar. I can not delete or add data. I used to add a url and navigate to the domain. Now I can not

    Greetings,
TY for the reply, the information was enlightening to be sure. I never knew safe mode was an option with Firefox. I have so many tasks running that I didn't want to shut things down. What I did is turn off some of the last plug-ins I installed. That did not fix the problem at least in the first look. What happened next was very interesting none the less. I had a moment of mouse spastic wrist syndrome and accidentally moved a tab in such a way that it opened in a new window. The URL bar was white and editable. So I moved all my tabs to the new window and everything works as it should. I have restarted Firefox this morning and it came back with the bar editable and I am speechless to understand what I may have done to correct the problem if anything ??

  • Email address change--how does this affect laptop and nook?

I use my Adobe ID only to authorize my laptop and Nook.  I need to change my email address which seems easy on the FAQs, but how do I then reauthorize my laptop and Nook?  And, if I do this, are all my existing library books unreadable since they were downloaded by what the Nook thinks is a different user?  I'm almost sure I won't be able to return any books in ADE on my laptop, but I can live with that if I can still read the books on the Nook.
