PPPD in Solaris 8

Hi,
Anyone knows what I have to do in Solaris 8 for using pppd 4.0?
I have added the packege, but when I tried to run pppd, I got "kernel lacks ppp support"...........
Thanks,
BR.

    hello
i'm fond that inside the folder /etc you have another one called /ppp and inside the folder /ppp you have some files that you have to edit in orther to configure your user name and password, but everything is explained on that files, and is bether that you reed then
then in the console you have to type pppd ttya (if your modem is conected to the Com1) call myisp
were myisp is one of the files that you have to configure, but how i'm told you everyting is splained on that files
If you dont have it please install the 2 Cd

  • MIB in Solaris 8

    Hello,
Our servers are currently monitored by a variety of services (HPOV, WUG, Netcool). There is no environmental monitoring currently performed. Environmental would include failed power supplies, hot of non-functioning fans, excessive chassis temp. There's something similar for Cisco like:
    traps for environmental problems are:
         (config)#snmp-server enable traps envmon ?
fan Enable SNMP envmon fan traps
shutdown Enable SNMP environmental monitor shutdown traps
status Enable SNMP environmental status change traps
supply Enable SNMP environmental monitor supply traps
temperature Enable SNMP environmental monitor temperature traps
The question here's. I know is something in Solaris 8 (MIB) that can trigger or tell us something of that kind of environmental issues, how could we setup or compile a MIB or MIBS so everytime those issues come out, we get a notification email for instance?
Thanks for any time and/or consideration you may have afforded my message

  • Solaris 8 config for DSL

I want to reconfigure my standalone SunBlade100 for DSL service. The OS is Solaris 8 10/01, and is currently configured for dial-up access to an ISP.
I've edited the etc/hosts, etc/resolve.conf, and etc/nsswitch.conf files, and I created an etc/defaultrouter file containing the gateway IP address.
Sun PPPD 4.0 is installed, and includes PPPoE.
My question is what else do I need to do in order to complete the configuration?
Are there any good references for Solaris DSL configuration?
    Thanks in advance?

    Hello,
I supose that its an errata but its /etc/resolv.conf and not /etc/resolve.conf.
Your access internet via a router. I dont know about DSL but if its a standar router you shoudnt have to configure pppd, just a normal network access with the routing and the naming service properly configured.
If you edit /etc/defaultrouter, the changes will take effect on the next reboot, so maybe youll have to add a route manually if you cannot shutdown the machine:
    route add default your_router_ip
This way you should ping your router, if the routing is properly configured your dns server too (specifying its IP) and finally if the naming service is well configured, any Full Qualyfied Domainame on internet.
Try this and post the results. Bye,

  • How to set Internet connection in solaris for DataOne Service in India?

I am using a P4 system with Inter Board D945GTP and i have a internet connection from BSNL. I wold like to connect internet to Solaris express Developer Edition 2/07
    Help me!
    bye
    P.Sathish Kumar

In India one need to configure pppoe for connecting BSNL DataONE broadband. So here is a reference quick guide to setup pppoe for BSNL DataONE
SUNW ppp packages should be already available for you. If you didn't install, you need the following packages. Install them from Solaris CD.
    Packages
SUNWpppd  - Solaris PPP Device Drivers.
SUNWpppdr - Solaris PPP configuration files.
    SUNWpppdt - Solaris PPP Tunneling.
SUNWpppdu - Solaris PPP daemon and utilities. There will be a file myisp.tmpl in /etc/ppp/peers directory. Copy the file to a filename /etc/ppp/peers/bsnl
    ~# cp /etc/ppp/peers/myisp.tmpl /etc/ppp/peers/bsnl
    Note the conventions used here
USERNAME       - is your BSNL id eg (userid)
PASSWORD       - provided by bsnl (*****)
INTERFACENAME  - is your ethernet card name eg (bge0, hme0....) Edit /etc/ppp/peers/bsnl file using an editor. The uncommented section should look like the following:
Where INTERFACE should be your ethernet interface name and USERNAME is your broadband user name.
    connect "/usr/bin/chat -f /etc/ppp/myisp-chat"  # dial into ISP.<br>
    sppptun
    plugin pppoe.so
    connect "/usr/lib/inet/pppoec INTERFACE"
user USERNAME           # my account name at my ISP
remotename bsnl # name of the ISP; for pap-secrets
noauth                  # do not authenticate the ISP's identity (client)
noipdefault             # assume no IP address; get it from ISP
defaultroute            # install default route; ISP is Internet gateway
updetach                # log errors and CONNECT string to invoker
noccp                   # ISP doesn't support free compressionNow there are two configuration files that needs to be updated.
    /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
/etc/ppp/chap-secretsIn these two files add the entry as follows
USERNAME        bsnl    PASSWORDWhere USERNAME is your broadband username and PASSWORD is you broadband password. Your configuration is almost completed. Now for connecting:
    #/usr/sbin/sppptun plumb pppoe INTERFACENAME
    #/usr/sbin/sppptun plumb pppoed INTERFACENAME
#/usr/bin/pppd debug call bsnlYou need to specify dns server to resolve dns names. Create a file in /etc with name /etc/resolv.conf and copy the nameserver info. For example:
echo nameserver  61.1.96.71 > /etc/resolv.confNote: The IP specified here is BSNL nameserver. Please ask your BSNL operator for exact dns address. Or else you can use the opendns.com server IP.
cp /etc/nsswitch.dns /etc/nsswitch.conf Make a backup copy so that you can copy back when needed.
cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.bsnlIn case you are still not able to resolv dns name, check if dns/client service is running or not.
    svcs -a | grep dns/clientIf not enable
svcadm enable dns/clientIf not online, try starting
    svcadm restart dns/client
    or
svcadm refresh dns/clientHere is a simple script that can help you for connecting after configuring PPPoE.
    #!/usr/bin/bash
    ifconfig bge0 plumb
    pkill -9 pppd
    /usr/sbin/sppptun plumb pppoe bge0
    /usr/sbin/sppptun plumb pppoed bge0
    sleep 5
    /usr/bin/pppd debug call bsnl
    echo nameserver 208.67.222.222 > /etc/resolv.conf
    echo nameserver 208.67.220.220 >> /etc/resolv.conf
    echo nameserver  61.1.96.71 >> /etc/resolv.conf
    cp /etc/nsswitch.dns /etc/nsswitch.conf
    svcadm restart dns/clientRegards

  • Solaris 10 ppp problems

    Hi!
I've big problems connecting to my isp using pppd included in Solaris 10 x86. I have Ericsson HiS modem, IDSL technology, connected to /dev/cua0 max speed set to 115200 kbps, it doesn't require chat script. I'd like to notice that there are no problems connecting my ISP on Linux with the same options used. I think the problem is a buggy PAP authentication negotiation with peer (diffs between linux and solaris in pppd debug log). Is there problem with configuration or (buggy?) old 2.4.0b1 version of ppp?? Any suggestions appreciated.

I need help especially from polish users, who experienced problems, or not, with HiS Ericsson iDSL modem (115,2 kbps) and Sun's ppp. Why can't I connect the same way as in for ex. FreeBSD or linux systems? Do I need a special configuration of serial port or modem? This is a fragment from typical pppd debug log:

  • Running pppd inside a zone/container

    People,
I'd like to know if it is possible to call out using pppd from insidea zone?
I have added the device cua0 to the zone and verified the modem working with
tip. Both in the global zone and my zone.
Running "pppd cua0 call myisp" works fine from the global zone, using the
standard pppd. But from inside a zone, it fails with an error message that the kernel lacks pppd support.
The goal is of course to have multiple ppp connections running simultaneously, separated from each other.
I've been hacking around, adding the device /dev/sppp to my zone as well, and it causes pppd to fail with permission problems.
Realizing that I am just using the trial-and-error method at this point, I hope that you can help me answering the following:
    1) Is it possible at all, in the way described above?
    2) If possible, can you please guide me how to set it up?
    Thank you,
    Magnus

This is most likely related to limitations about how virtualisation is implemented, but then again other virtualisation technologies also don't allow these kind of constructions luckily. And with Solaris 10 you also have a shared kernel and IP-stack (Sun is working on that) and trying to create interface from within a zone scares the daylight out of me. Also think how the routing needs to be controlled.
Safe way is to let the global zone handle it. Another way is to have a dedicated device for the network connections and this one is prefered in most cases.

  • Pppd: ppp0 or sppp0

    Hi,
I'm setting up my DSL in Solaris but the system fails to find a ppp0 interface on the system. Someone on a PPPoE forum I asked suggested I change the script to look for sppp0. That had no effect on getting my connection up. I've tried both the Sun version of pppd and 2.4.1 pppd I've downloaded but both gave the same results. From the script it seams that 'pppd' is responsible for creating the ppp0/sppp0 interface. What would cause pppd to fail create a ppp0/sppp0 interface? I would greately appreciate to hear from someone who knows more on this topic.
    System:
    Solaris 8 10/01
Installation CD's + Documentation and Companion CD installed.
Install drive is c0d1 (Two drive system both at 4GB)
    Network card is D-Link DFE-538TX/R
I use the RealTek driver rtl8139A
Ethernet sets up as rtls0 (ifconfig -a)

  • Logical interface in solaris 10

    Hi there,
I need to configure logical interface in a solaris 10 3/05 server. After reading the Solaris 10 IP services manual, I am not quite sure what to do. All the examples and explanation are about using the new subcommand addif of ifconfig. It was not clear in the documentation if the setting logical interfaces via addif will persist across boot.
Can one still configure logical interface in Solaris 10 in a more traditional way like in Solaris 8? In an Solaris 8 server I will do the following.
Let's assume I want to configure in a solaris 8 server a logical interface named hme0:1 with IP address 192.168.20.28 with netmask 255.255.255.0 for hostname host001
    # cat /etc/hostname.hme0:1
    host001
    ^D
    # echo "192.168.20.28 host001" >> /etc/inet/hosts
    # echo "192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0" >> /etc/inet/netmasks
    # reboot -- -r
Can one still do that in solaris 10 3/05 server?

You don't need to reboot (you can run ifconfig for this boot and let the files do the work next time) and the -r doesn't do anything with interfaces (expecially virtual interfaces) anyway.

  • Installation problem on Solaris

I am trying to install sun one 7.0 on Solaris 8. The install is failing with this error:
ERROR - library load failed with following error: Can't load library: /opt/SUNWappserver7/lib/libinstallCore.so
INFO - End core server uninstallation
    anyone know what causes this??
    cheers

Looks like Solaris package installation failed and installer reverted to uninstallation sequence. For low level pkgadd log please check /var/sadm/install/logs/Sun_ONE_Application_Server_install.B<timestamp> file (timestamp is date and time of your installation attempt in mmddHHMM format).
Look for any errors in this file. Most likely thing that could have happened is that the installation of Java Help (SUNWjhrt) package failed because you didn't have existing package based J2SE installation on the system. If that's the case, workaround is to either preinstall package based J2SE installation or to selected option to install bundled J2SE that comes with application server.

  • Installation problem on Solaris 10

    Dear All,
We are trying to install j2sdk 1.4.2_13 on solaris server zone. I have downloaded j2sdk-1_4_2_13-nb-5_0-solsparc-ml.bin
But when I try to execute this:
    #./j2sdk-1_4_2_13-nb-5_0-solsparc-ml.bin
It gives me error: The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the installer with the -console or -silent flag
    Tried with -console:
The wizard cannot continue because of the following error: Invalid command line option: console is not supported (10

    Then tried with -silent:
This time command just completed w/o any output at all.
Please suggest what can I do?
    regards, Sean.

    Dear Siddhesh,
    Thanks for your reply.
I tried using X Manager GUI for my Solaris. But when I double click the j2sdk-1_4_2_13-nb-5_0-solsparc-ml.bin file to run it, it simply denies saying:
The filename "j2sdk-1_4_2_13-nb-5_0-solsparc-ml.bin" indicates that this file is of type "Unknown type". The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "Shell script". If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system.
Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for "Shell script", then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file.
    Also /tmp has full authorizations:
    drwxrwxrwt   7 root     sys          557 Jun 24 08:34 tmp
I dont have Hummingbird for X11 forwarding with this client. Do I have any other option??
    regards, Sean.

  • New to Solaris, Some Samba and NTFS issues.

Hi Im new to solaris and trying out ZFS which has been great.
Im haivng some trouble that I cant find up to date info on so here goes:
First how do you mount an NTFS volume in Solaris 11 Express?
I need to access the data on an NTFS drive to populate my new ZFS tank.
Secondly, I have read only access on my samba shares from windows machines but my smb.conf looks right. a copy of my smb.conf will follow
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First how do you mount an NTFS volume in Solaris 11 Express?
I need to access the data on an NTFS drive to populate my new ZFS tank.I never had a need for it but I think you'll have to compile fuse ntfs-3g manually.

Secondly, I have read only access on my samba shares from windows machines but my smb.conf looks right. a copy of my smb.conf will follow
Any suggestions would be appreciated. You don't need to use Samba in Solaris 11 Express.

  • Error ora-15081 (and several others) while creating a new db in Solaris

    Hi all,
    OS: Solaris 11
    DB: 11.2.0.3.5 (2 node rac)
While creating a new db on a Solaris 11 env, via dbca, the following stack error appeared to me:
    ORA-19624: operation failed, retry possible
ORA-19870: error while restoring backup piece path[...]
ORA-19504: failed to create file "+MYDG"
ORA-00372: file cannot be modified at this time
    ORA-15196: invalid ASM block header [kfc.c:19572] [1] [257] [0 != 821602346]
ORA-15081: failed to submit an I/O operation to a disk
ORA-15066: offlining disk "dsk_0001" in group "MYDG" may result in data loss
ORA-06512: at SYS.X$DBMS_BACKUP_RESTORE, line5827The dbca (ran as oracle user) aborts at 15%.
There are a lot of errors in this stack, and i'm not pretty sure which error is the main cause of this issue, but I think it's the "ORA-15081: failed to submit an I/O operation to a disk" that is the bad guy here. I did some researches and found that some possible sollutions:
    1) One said that this error might be caused by bad permissions on the raw devices used in the "MYDG" diskgroup (i'm using 6 devices with external redundancy), but my devices are all with the grid:asmadmin and 660 permissions
    2) Another said that this might be a problem with the owner:group of the oracle binaries. In ny installation the oracle binaries ($ORACLE_HOME/bin) are with the oracle:oinstall. I thougth of addind the asmadmin group to the oracle user, but i'm not sure what are the implications of this change. What do you thing?
What am I doing wrong and how can i solve it?
Thanks in advance for your pacience and attention.

  • How to create HP LaserJet 2420 printer queue on Solaris 10

    Hi Solaris Gurus,
I am having difficulty creating a printer queue for HP LaserJet 2420 on Solaris 10 (11/9) Sparc (Sun Fire T5220) server. A popular method used is with hppi (HP Jet Direct) tool but it does not have the exact printer driver and alternative printer drivers (e.g. HP LaserJet 4 / 4M, HP LaserJet 2000 series) resulted in only part of the text occupying the wrong side of an A5 page.
An alternative approach that has worked in the past for simple default paper tray 2 (single paper tray), with tray 1 reserved for manual feed. This method involves creating a working printer queue on a Windows workstation (XP) / server (2000) with the correct driver and having configured to support Unix printing to receive LPR request from Unix systems in general. A remote printer queue would then be defined on Solaris 10 system which points to the Windows system. However, the printing jobs kept going to tray 1 (top manual feed) even though the Windows printer queue was configured to go to tray 3 (bottom tray).
The earlier method would be simplest but needs the right driver (PDD) but I don’t know where to find it. The latter approach is also not working despite having got the right driver on Windows. A test page on the target Windows printer queue would print to tray 3 (bottom tray) of the printer correctly.
Printmgr does not work well with HP printers from experience. It is good for serial and local printers.
Your advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Crystal

Hi Giogio, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I am sorry to be the bearer of this news, but do the age of the printer, it is not supported by Mac OS X 10.9. I am including a list below of the supported printers from Apple:
OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download.
For more information, I would recommend contacting the Apple Support Communities.
