PPPoE not connected?

i can connect to the internet directly with a ethernet cable but every time i try to connect, it shows full signal but is still not connecting. It then gives me a message saying "could not find a PPPoE server"...

Shangila, may I take the liberty of restating your question by adding the bold text below?
i can connect to the internet directly with a ethernet cable but every time i try to connect *using the Express*, it shows full signal but is still not connecting. It then gives me a message saying "could not find a PPPoE server"...
That makes more sense.
You should configure the Express to use the same network settings that you have been using on your Macbook Pro. In other words, if you connect to your ISP using PPPoE, use Airport Utility to configure the Express's to connect via PPPoE and give it your login name and password. Then, configure your Macbook Pro's Network preferences to connect via Airport... not PPPoE.
Excerpt from Apple's Troubleshooting a PPPoE Internet Connection:
AirPort users should be sure that the setting to connect automatically via PPPoE is not selected for the Built-in Ethernet port on client computers, as described in technical document 107530, "AirPort: Can Connect to Base Station But Not to Internet When Using PPPoE."

  • Airport Extreme 1st generation not connecting to internet via PPPoE.

The Extreme is replacing an existing Airport Express which successfully connects to the internet. I reset the Airport Extreme to the factory settings and started from there. The internet provider requires it be setup using PPPoE. I've tried several times to set up a new wireless network but the Airport Extreme isn't connecting to the internet, can't find DNS servers. I contacted the internet provider and confirmed that all settings/usernames/passwords are correct. I cycled the power on the DSL modem, unplugging it for several minutes a few times. Finally I took the whole setup to the local Genius Bar. Since they couldn't setup a PPPoE network there, the Apple Tech set up the Extreme using DHCP so we know it works. He suggested that I try replacing the wireless network instead of setting up a new network. I came home and tried that to the same results: no DNS servers and PPPoe not connecting to the internet. Everything in the Extreme is exactly the same as the Express except the Express works and the Extreme doesn't. What am I missing?
    Some background:
I purchased and used the Extreme in the US. Now trying to connect it to my MacBook in Canada. I did change the setting in the Extreme to "Canada"
I just the computer to 10.6.8. I ran the Disk Utility to repair the disk permissions several times.

If you temporarily connect the modem directly to your MacBook and set up a PPPoE connection on your Mac as a test......can it connect to the Internet that way?

  • "not connected via PPPoE"? why, it was fine before!

Got up this moning and couldn't connect to the net.
My airport icon showed a scrolling message "cannot connect over PPPoE". Last night everything was fine, I think I even left everything connected over night.
I've been in touch with my ISP but they say the problem isn't with them. After much messing around, I've lost my old network name, a new one has been created, the icon shows good reception, the scrolling message has disappeared and I appear to be connected but...when I go to Internet Connect it gives me the message of "not connected"
Ironically, I'm currently connected to the Net via someone else in the building - their Newtprk shows up and works on my mac, but mine doesn't!
    What's my next step?

The first step is usually to pull the Airport Express and modem from power, waiting a few minutes, then plugging the modem back into power, waiting a minute, then plugging the Airport Express back into power.
If the Airport Admin Utility tells you the firmware version on your Airport Express is 6.2, I also suggest you install the more stable version 6.1.1 from:

  • RV180 router will not connect to ISP using PPPoE

I had the same problem.  The RV180W would not connect to an AT&T DSL connection using PPPoE (modem in bridge mode), or behind the DSL Modem/router with the DSL modem/router providing a dynamic IP to the RV180W or a cable modem (TimeWarner Roadrunner dynamic IP).  I upgraded the firmware yesterday and now the RV180W will connect to a dynamic WAN IP, but it still will not connect using PPPoE.
I have also noticed the admin interface is only accessible about 75% of the time.  When going to 192.168.1.1 the login prompts either don't come up or if they do, after logging in, the screen never fully loads after that.  I have to reboot the router to get it to work.
Also, the router has not yet pulled DNS from either the DSL or the cable modem.  I had to manually enter those addresses.
Any suggestions on the PPPoE issue?  Any thoughts as to why the admin interface is not always accessible or the DNS?
    Thank you,

Hi Ron, thanks for using our forum, my name is Johnnatan and I am part of the Small business Support community. About your login issue I recommend you to use different browsers such as Mozilla, i.e 9.0 or superior, Safari, Opera etc. About the PPPoE question, basically you just need the username and the password provided by your ISP. Can you please reach out to our Small Business Support Center and open a Service Request to address this issue? One of our Engineers may be able to work with you and diagnose the root cause. when i click on safari to use the internet it says "safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet", but i am connected to a wifi network so how do i get safari to work?

you may be connected to the wireless network but the question is the internet working properly on the wireless network...
what i mean is that i can make a wireless network without the internet so i can save and share files and have other devices connected to the same network access them... but you have to make sure that your internet it running properly... may have to reconfigure the router is your using PPPOE or if it was working prior to your post then try to restart your modem... that usually resolves most issues.

This looks like FTPS which is not supported on the ASA. You can workaround it by trying to connect using Active mode from the outside instead of PSV.

  • AOL Broadband, will connect to laptop, but not connect to internet explorer. WRT54GS v.6

I can connect to my wireless network via my laptop, but not to internet explorer. We have changed every setting imaginable and re-set the modem, router many times. We Ip configed, did ping tests, installed and re-installed the card in the laptop. Done all this 4 times with the tech support from Linksys. Finally, I realized it must the wireless router and/or modem configuration. (The laptop works on every other network in town except ours, and has not security settings enabled).
I have been on customer service calls for 2 weeks, with AOL and linksys and nothing seems to be helping me. I have 2 wireless routers (thought the first was bad, so bought another brand new), and just had a brand new modem installed. Basically, I have brand new equipment.
The laptop has no security settings and connect to any wireless network in town. It finds the connection to my WRT54GS v.6, but will not connect via internet explorer.
I want to uninstall and re-install the router. How do I uninstall the router? (I have instruction for re-installation). Also AOL rep told me, to make sure I configure the router to a certain port range. Any ideas as to how to do this?
Anyone have problems with AOL high speed and linksys router? Has the high speed cable cord coming out of the wall, not ethernet or DSL.
We have changed the settings in http://192.168.1.1 till I am blue in the face. None of the channels worked, security didn't work, adding the ip address manually to the laptop didn't work. I am getting no error messages. Am trying to get this wireless modem working because I need it. Should have come to this forum first!

hi..if you want to uninstall the router...the only thing you need to do is hold the reset button down for 30 seconds...
i m a bit confused here as to why the ISP techs asked you to forward ports on the router...port forwarding is needed for a specific application or a device that is behind the router....
the mentioned ports are for AOL messenger ( AIM )....and has nothing to do with the modem...anyways , let us work out together on this issue...carry out the steps i mention and you can revert back with the results and your success rate...
    1) connect the computer to the modem and check what ip address you have on the computer ??
    2) go to start -> control panel -> network connections ->
let me know what other icons you have besides Local Area Connection and Wireless Network Connection..
3)connect the computer to the router and the router to the modem...
access the router using http://192.168.1.1 .. let the internet connection type be on DHCP....check the ip address on the status page of the router ui...
    4) if it is 0.0.0.0 , go to setup tab and go to mac address clone subtab , enable it and hit clone..save the settings and do a power cycle...
    5) check whether you have the ip address...if you have the same ip as coming off of the modem..u should be online and if still 0.0.0.0 , then select PPPoE for the internet connection type and enter the username and password...check whether the ip address comes up....if still negative, ensure that the modem is in bridge mode...
6)if the ip address comes up as 192.168.1.x , change the local ip add of the router to 192.168.2.1 and do a power cycle..
let me know for any help !!!

  • Ethernet will not connect after installing latest Security Update.

I installed the latest security update, restarted my computer, and found that it now will not connect to the internet. I get the message "Could not find a PPPoE server". I have checked all of my settings, restarted the computer again, turned the modem off and on again, etc., but nothing helps. I know that there is nothing wrong with the modem and server because I am connected through the same DSL modem to this computer (a mac mini). It would seem that the security update has done something unhelpful! Any ideas?
BTW, the ibook does not have a wireless card and I had not installed 2 earlier wireless updates. I only installed this one because it said "recommended for all users".
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello
It seems that the update set your preferences to "use PPPOe" while you where using "TCP/IP".
Go to "System Preferences" and enter the pane whose icon is named "Réseau" in french (maybe "Network" in english.
    Reset your settings to "TCP/IP".

  • FrontRow complains I am not connected to the Internet

When I try to watch cinematic trailers, frontrow reports I am not connected to the Internet. I am connected...
    Any ideas?

I'm just curious about the types of internet connections each one of you have? Are you connecting to a Router? PPPoE? Wireless WEP/WPA etc?
I have this problem as well but I connect through a PPPoE. My idea is that if you check Internet settings it lists PPPoE seperate from Ethernet and others so perhaps the is where Front Row is going wrong.
    Cheers,

  • Connected to network but Safari says not connected

Just had to reinstall OS X and upgraded to 10.4.11
I connect to my FIOS network using Airport, and am having no problems. However, when I attempt to open Safari it says I am not connected to the Internet.
I run diagnostics and the following happens:
it lets me get all the way to selecting an airport network, then does a scan--says it's looking for PPPoE host, unable to find. Tells me to check network settings.
I have tried restarting the Actiontec router with no results. what gives?

I think my son's apt bldg uses FIOS and as I recall he is also PPoE, so PPoE may not be as uncommon as we think, for FIOS.
You should have gotten a letter from your ISP that said what your username and password for your account with the ISP is, to setup for PPoE, whether you are static or DHCP external WAN IP address assignment, etc. Do you still have that letter?
You're not connecting to your computer via ethernet cable directly to your ActionTec right now, correct? You're going wirelessly? If that's the case, can you reconfigure your hardware to connect to your ActionTec via ethernet cable? (Don't forget to change your computer's system prefs network stuff from airport to ethernet DHCP.) And if so, I know you've done so gazillions of times already but if you haven't done so (lately?) while tethered via ethernet cable, try rebooting your router and your computer one more time. I'm trying to figure out whether its a wireless thing, e.g., maybe the wireless isn't turned on in the ActionTec or has MAC authentication enabled and your computer's Airport card's MAC address isn't on the list, or the wireless channel encryption password or algortithm is mismatched, or... So, if we can get in via ethernet cable, we can start rummaging around in your computer's network settings and in your ActionTec's configuration pages.
By the way, how are you posting on this forum? Different computer same network? Or different computer different network?

  • Front Row says im not connected to the internet, But I am!

I go on Front row to watch some movie trailers and it says im not connected to the internet, but im posting this.
I have repaired permissions and reinstalled it and leopard.
    What can I do?

It looks indeed like there is a bug in the Leopard version of Front Row. I have the exact same problem, after having just installed Leopard in a new clean install. The trailer browsing feature worked just fine with Tiger, in this very same Intel mini, but now with Leopard and with the exact same network settings, it keeps nagging about a missing internet connection. I am using a pppoe / DSL line, and needless to say, my internet connection is working just fine.
But now, thanks to the hint above, I was able to get the movie trailers to work now. The trick, or should I say the workaround was to stop using the automatic setting configured by Leopard during installation, and setting up a new location, with the very same details. You don't have to delete anything, just add a new location and name it to your liking, then add your connection details, and you're all set.
So in short, apparently one should use a manually set location rather than the automatic mode. An annoying little bug really, but fortunately easy to fix.
Hopefully the boffins @Apple are reading these forums, and this little bug is to be fixed in 10.5.2 as well. That is, along with the Mail SMTP bug, which was also annoying but easy to fix, eventually.

  • Quest DSL Modem will not connect

I am trying to connect to DSL via Qwest and 2wire modem. I have gone through all the shut-down, and restart sequences on other posts and still, the green lights on the modem come on for ethernet, power and DSL but the Internet light on the modem remains red. It will not allow me to connect to 172.16.0.1 as suggested by another post.
Qwest tells me I should contact apple as it is not a modem problem.
Since I am currently, connected to the net via a satellite modem, I figured that some software downloaded for that might be causing a problem so I connected the modem to my ibook (G3) and am getting the same problem. The iBook is running OS 10.4. which does not allow me to configure the IPv4 automatically so I tried setting it manually with no success.
Also, I was wondering why Qwest tells me to select connection PPPoA, not PPPoE. When I tried to set up the PPPoE, with their settings, that did not work either. My neighbor has a Mac and Qwest so I am not sure what the problem is.
    Can anyone help???

I was finally able to connect with my laptop to the new DSL modem. This modem has 4 ethernet ports and they said that I should be able to attach my desktop computer using another internet cable. When I did that, all of my browsers give me a "cannot connect to the www. server" message. Is there a setting that needs to be changed on that computer somewhere?
I CAN connect to the modem 192.168.0.1 but it will not go "outside" of that address.
    Any suggestions???

  • When will iPhone support PPPoE internet connections?

When will iPhone support PPPoE internet connections? Numerous Internet providers still use PPPoE internet over DHCP data. However, iphone does not support PPPoE.

PPPoE is irrelevant to the iPhone; it is a protocol between the ISP and the first point of presence on premises, which today is almost always a wired or wireless router. PPPoE would only be meaningful if there was a way to connect the phone directly to the incoming Internet connection. As there is no way to do this physically it would be pointless.

  • Dual Ethernet will not connect if set to share Single IP address

The subject says it all. My trusty old Dual Ethernet will not connect if set to share Single IP address.
I cannot get anything but a self assigned IP address with it set to share a single IP address.
Before about Tuesday of last week I had connected to it a Mac mini, iMac, Dell Desktop, Dell Laptop, and PS3 all working fine. I think Comcast or Apple updated their system or Airport software and now the old dual Ethernet will not share a single IP address.

So far as I know, there has been no recent change in Apple's software affecting the Snow (a/k/a Dual Ethernet) base station. About 2-1/2 weeks ago, Apple distributed an update to AirPort software for Intel Macs running Tiger, but it would not have affected the base station.
Your topic implies that when the Snow is not set to share a single IP address (i.e., presumably, when "Distribute IP addresses" is unchecked in the Network pane of AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow), one of the computers is connecting to the Internet through the base station. I also imagine that the self assigned IP address you mention is the IP address of that computer, rather than of the base station, and that that computer obtains an IP address from Comcast when the Snow is not distributing IP addresses.
Assuming that that computer is connecting wirelessly, then whatever settings that computer is using for TCP/IP and PPPoE in the AirPort part of System Preferences, while the computer connects to the Internet, should be the ones used for the base station, in the Internet pane of AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow. (Most likely, it is simply "Using DHCP.") The IP address obtained from Comcast should be received by the base station, when it is set to distribute IP addresses in the Network pane, and the IP address should show up in the Internet pane. (When the Snow is distributing IP addresses, it has two IP addresses itself, a WAN IP address obtained from Comcast and a LAN IP address, 10.0.1.1, visible only to devices in your network.)
Even when the settings are correct, the Snow might not be able to obtain an IP address if your cable modem remembers the computer, which had been receiving the IP address previously. You'll probably need to shut down the computers and unplug power to the base station and cable modem. After waiting 5 minutes, restore power to the modem, then after another 5 minutes, restore power to the base station, then after another 5 minutes, start up a computer.
