PPPoE on Arch FTP Install

Hi everybody!
I'm a new and excited would-be Archlinux user. I've just finished my exams and I'm prepared for a new challenge, installing Arch.
I have a fast adsl internet connexion and I want to use the FTP ISO and not trouble myself later with post-installation updates. My question is: How do you connect to the internet using pppoe from the FTP ISO?
Thx.:)

I tried to connect again but the same thing happens. In vc7 Arch outputs an error saying
transient reseolver failure bla bla...
ifconfig outputs almost the same as pppoe-status does, and from what I could understand from that, no errors were spotted.
less /etc/resolv.conf shows only this:
nameserver 192.168.0.1
Anyway I came to the conclusion that installing Arch requires more in-depth documentation and I will resume the install at a later date when I shall have discovered the source of my hardware connection problem. When I will have it fixed in Windows I shall resume my attempts.
Worth noting I think is the fact that a few days ago, in my search for a proper Linux distro to fit my needs, I've installed Mepis 8. Mepis comes with the old Network Manager, prior to 0.7, and I could not connect with it to the internet. Only after switching to the terminal and typing 'ppppoeconf' I could connect. But with pppoeconf it didn't required a second reconnect and even now when booting Mepis (I still have it on my drive) the connection works flawless.
Doesn't Arch have this tool on the FTP/HTTP ISO?
Anyway thanks to all of you. The Arch community is really great and I think I've just found the perfect Linux distro that I've been looking for far too long.

  • Arch 0.7.1 FTP install only CD ISO

    Hi there
i was sick of downloading the whole base cd when i was going to use FTP install anyway.
So i decided to modify the cd and made a FTP install only cd.
i dont know if someone did it before .. whatever
its nothing big just a really tiny modification in the installer.
    but maybe someone is interested
    here is it:
    5c131d6553d703ba1c85157cca54bb6e  arch-0.7.1-netinstall.iso
    http://freesw.de/arch-0.7.1-netinstall.iso 11.839.488 Bytes
hope it might be useful to someone.
    greets

yes its only about 12 megs
    and yes its enough
thats just the standard arch cd without the packages on it and a small modification to the installer script
maybe ill make an image for USB pen drives as well

  • [FTP Install] cannot install as /mnt/etc is not created

Hi, happy new year to everyone
i've been unable to install Arch for a long time on my desktop system with raid/lvm2 partition. It runs fine on my old laptop.
Tonight I gave it another try with froscon install CD (August 2008), choosing FTP Install as usual, and end up stuck @ the same point.
Following http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … AID_or_LVM , everything goes well up to "Configure Arch", where /mnt/etc is *not* created, making this step a dead end one.
There are 2 Sata HDDs with identical partition :
    /dev/sda1 * 1 15 120456 83 Linux
    /dev/sda2 16 10011 80292870 5 Extended
    /dev/sda5 16 2564 20474811 fd Linux raid autodetect
    /dev/sda6 2565 5113 20474811 fd Linux raid autodetect
    /dev/sda7 5114 9880 38290896 fd Linux raid autodetect
    /dev/sda8 9881 10011 1052226 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda1 is standard /boot
/dev/sd[ab]5 is a raid0 array with 3 partitions, the 3rd beeing free / for Arch setup.
/dev/sd[ab]6 is a raid1 array with 3 partitions for personnal data
/dev/sd[ab]7, raid0 array with 2 partitions that i can share for extra data (like /tmp)
    /dev/sd[ab]8 are swap
I can activate existing RAID and LVM volumes, make a filesystem on /dev/systems/system3 array, mount it on /mnt then /sda1 on /mnt/boot. I also mounted other systems lvm partitions which went fine.
Configuring the network, downloading and installing base packages go fine.
Configure Arch gives me *empty* configuration files. i.e. Vi says "New DIRECTORY" for every configuration file.
It's been about a year I'm stuck there
    Any advice's welcome.

Woow. Was able to finish the installation as soon as i choose "CD install" rather than "FTP install"
I know this is probably the first time in years i install a distro from the CD, so it might why i couldn't install Arch so many times.
Note that the issue with configure Arch had occured with every ISO i booted with since over a year

  • FTP install, Don`t pacnic, unable to downlaod packages.txt

    Hello everyone.
I am trying to install Archlinux using FTP install from the last 'don`t panic' CD, but the installer is unable to download the file 'packages.txt' from any of the servers. I tryed to update pacman and to install again, but I got the same error again. What can I do to solve the problem. I just formated the hard drive and now I am using links from install CD to post the topic.
    Regards.

    Thank you, byte.
I have no more CDs now I will have to wait till tomorrow. So it will and it is not possible to install arch using older CD`s, is that true. Or the problem is in me. I wanted to tune the base packages, not much, but I wanted to fill the power . As far as I know, that is not possible in the newest release of the install CD, and the setup is installing all the base packages, is that true again.
    Regards.

  • Need help with arch linux install!

Hello, let me start off by telling you about the predicament I'm in at the moment. I've been trying to install arch linux on with a cd-drive that has been failing for a little over a year now, so you can already see where my problem starts!  The cd-drive, however will work with such cd's as Windows, Ubuntu, and Slackware, which I'm happy with. Yet, archlinux doesn't work so much.
And now maybe my solution. I've got a usb cd drive, that I've had laying around that works well, just not well enough for my bios to be able to boot from; which is horrible I know. I've searched the bios for loading a usb cd drive and everything else, including google so I don't think I'm going to get anywhere with that one. Anyways what I'm thinking of doing is that when archlinux is in the terminal right before you type the "/arch/setup" command, I would like to know if there is any command that allows you to change the cd it boots the cd from to go right into the installation. I'm still working on easying my out of the newbie stage of linux at the moment, but I've never run into a command like that, that would help me out. Hopefully there is one though, because I would very much like to archlinux to work, so please respond! Right now I'm running elinks through the terminal right before you type "/arch/setup". Thanks!

    loosec wrote:
So you get through the boot process just fine then on your old CD drive. The only thing you should have to do after that is to throw your CD into the USB CD drive and proceed with the installation. The installer should then ask you what CD drive you would like to use when you choose install from CD.
Another way to do it would be to switch cd like above and then manually mount your /dev/[your_usb_cd_here] on /src. The installer then has to be pointed to this place as the source of your installation. To find out what your usb cd drive is called you should unplug it, then replug it and run: dmesg
The mount command might also need to be shown that this is a cd so:
    mount -t iso9660 /dev/[usb_cd_device_name] /src
    should do the trick.
If you really want to learn more of what the installer does (and fail installing a few times) you should also check out the command
    /arch/quickinstall
If your Internet connection is up for it, it seems like you could just choose an FTP install instead.
    Goodluck!
Once the CD is removed from the drive that it was booted from. the installation will not continue, as the arch install always goes back to the boot drive to continue read the neccessary information for the install. I do not think there is a way to fool the computer into booting from one cd drive and then continueing on with another. To do this you would have to tell the computer that you are switching drives.
If you can boot up the CD kernel and get to where you type in /arch/setup then the next thing I would od is FTP install. That would limit your CD rom drie usage.
There is also a way to install arch from within another distro, EVEN ANOTHER LIVECD! <-- this may be your best bet. Check the wiki, there is tons of information there.

  • Can no longer do FTP install successfully

I needed three more arch boxen, so I fired up my usual 0.7-base CD and installed arch from FTP.
While doing the FTP install, the arch setup program couldn't find chroot, and I couldn't boot after I finished the install. It gave me an initial console couldn't be found error, even though I set myself up for udev. After I manually made /dev/null (which ended up being nonwritable) and /dev/console, I booted with a bunch of "respawn too fast" errors on /dev/c[1-7].
All of this smelled really bad.
So instead, I did a base install off the CD with old packages. All went well. After that booted successfully, I updated using pacman -Syu, updated lilo.conf for udev, ran lilo, and rebooted. Everything worked fine.
For some reason, it seems impossible to install from the 0.7-base CD using current packages. My final product shouldn't have been any different with the two methods, but it seems that using new packages straight out the chute doesn't work.
Any thoughts on this? Any word on a new install ISO?
*NOTE* I usually do FTP install...

For ftp-install, don't add devfs=nomount in menu.lst. After rebooting, add it in menu.lst, then issue the following command:
    migrate-udev
    Good luck.

  • Scsi controller not recognized during ftp install

    Hi all,
As you can tell, this is my first post and my first attemp to install arch.  I downloaded the latest ftp install floppies "Arch Linux 0.5 (Nova)" and  I am trying to install arch on a PII system with and Adaptec 2940UW controller and no cdrom.  I can boot from Tom's recue disk:
    http://www.toms.net/rb/
and the controller is recognized and I can use fdisk to partition the drive.
However, when I boot from the arch install floppies, the controller is not recognized.  When I manually load the module for the controller, ie. aic7xxx, lsmod shows it as unused.
After looking at the boot log using dmesg, I noticed the following, which I don't understand:
    kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno=2
Is this a kernel issue and does anyone have any pointers for me?
    Thanks
    Kevin
PS: I tried my best to search for a related topic.

Thanks for the reply.  It still doesn't work for me.
I noticed that the floppy images have been updated -- the md5sum's have changed.  I will give them a try.
As an aside, the listed md5sum's for the new images don't match the downloads.  I downloaded from several mirrors and I get the same sums, which don't match the sums listed.

  • If I do an FTP install will I get latest Kernel - fuse etc etc etc ??

Hi... I love ARCHBOOT and my local repository on a usb stick though I'm about to do a reinstall to get all the new 2.6.30 stuff. ARCHBOOT isn't going to work for now I think...
SO, may I ask that IF I boot from the CD and do an FTP install will I get the latest base stuff AND all everything else the latest versions?   I thnk yes, though thought to ask the gurus here....
    thank you!

Yes.... good to have comfirmation.... thanks.
I remind myself how much I enjoy since last week using ARCHBOOT and a ocal repository / repo-add all on one usb stick for total offince SUPER fast install. I am going to attempt to update te core database for ARCHBOOT as doing an ftp install is not so interesting/logical for me now,  as I get better with ARCH.
    many thanks!

  • Dual booting win 7 and arch: cannot install grub to partition

I have read the arch wiki page on dual booting and several other sources on line, but I am still struggling to get this to work.
I am trying to dual boot arch and windows 7 on my lenovo ideapad s205. the machine comes with windows 7 pre-installed.
I shrank the win 7 partition and added an extended partition with 3 logical partions for /boot, swap, and /.
I am able to install and run arch by installing grub to the mbr. when I do this, though, I cannot boot windows. (the windows section of grub menu.lst is uncommented and points toward hda0,0. I have tried hda 0,1 as well).
I have also tried to use the windows boot loader to load arch, as described in the arch wiki page on dual booting. The problem here is that, taking this approach, I should install grub to my /boot partition, but when I try to do this, the installer only allows me to install grub to sda or sdb (the usb stick).
I have read that grub should be able to boot linux from a logical partition. Is this so?
Is there something wrong with the arch installer that it is not giving me the option of installing to a partition rather than the mbr, or is this  a problem with my partition scheme, or something else?
I am tempted to remove lenovo's recovery system, but on the other hand, I have already needed to use it several times while monkeying around with installing arch.
    Thanks for any help.
    UPDATE:
I now have the laptop dual-booting win 7 and arch. My solution ( adapted from here: http://helms-deep.cable.nu/~rwh/blog/?p=177) was to:
    1. installed arch on the partitions I had created for it, but skipped the "install bootloader" stage.
    2. in win 7, I downloaded and installed EasyBCD and made an entry for arch in it. I checked the option to "Use EasyBCD's copy of GRUB"
    3. When I restarted, I got a grub error because the entry in grub's menu.lst was pointing at the wrong partitions for the kernel and root.
    4. So I went back into the arch live disk, mounted the boot partition and edited menu.lst.
Now when I start the laptop, the windows boot loader starts and I can choose between win  7 and arch. when I select arch, grub4dos starts and gives me the option to start arch. this is not particularly elegant (nor is it fast), so I think this solution is less than ideal, but it does work.
I'd be interestd in any thoughts about what went wrong and what a better solution would be.
    thanks.

Is this a typo in your post or how it was in menu.lst? Surely it should be hd0,0 and not hda0,0? The entry I have in my menu.lst is as follows:
    # (2) Windows
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
    What was yours?

  • [SOLVED] FTP install (in MS Virtual PC 2007)

    Hi all,
I'm new to Archlinux, coming from Debian and Ubuntu distros.
I'm attempting to install Archlinux in an MS Virtual PC 2007 VM at my work. Everything seems to have gone fine so far until I get to select my packages. It says on any server I choose, "Error fetching package list from server". The first step "Configure Network" seemed to go fine, using DHCP. I moved to another console (Alt-F4) and checked my rc.conf settings. Under "Networking" I have:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo !eth0)
When I try the command ifconfig it shows all my networking info, which looks fine to me. When I ping google.com it returns, "ping: unknown host google.com" which would mean my network isn't working. I tried restarting the networking daemon with "/etc/rc.d/network restart" and it didn't help.
I wonder if it's because it's in a VM? Or should I not do the FTP install? Or is there something missing in my rc.conf?
    Thanks.

Hmm, I'm not sure about DNS.
I can ping the rounter fine.
I setup a "static ip" entry in rc.conf. So my config looks like:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.1.116 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
I made sure 192.168.1.116 wasn't already being used by pinging it on my host computer.
Restarting the network daemon and pinging google.com still results with packet loss. I wonder if it's something to do with my works network configuration. I'll try this again when I get home.

The process is very much the same as your desktop install. Just follow the Beginner's Guide and you should be fine. There are, however, a few things you may want to consider (and this applies to laptops in general, not to any specific model): https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Laptop
If it comes with an SSD, you should also read the wiki article on SSD's: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SSD

  • Official Arch Linux Install Guide needs edit

    Aloha,
This line in the Official Arch Linux Install Guide
    Official Arch Linux Install Guide
    dd if=archlinux-XXX.img of=/dev/sdX
    Needs to be changed too
    dd if=archlinux-2010.05-{core|netinstall}-{i686|x86_64|dual}.iso of=/dev/sdx
    Mahalo

Hum, well I don't know how to write a git patch. I guess it would be a good thing to learn though, but I have to go to bed now.
Hum..., after further looking at the this forums section I guess I posted in a totally wrong place Live and learn.

  • FTP Install Questions

After I did a simple ftp install, using the base-devel packages, how would I install fvwm-crystal with X and NVidia Drivers?

    pacman -S nvidia fvwm-crystal
is suggest you to read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide

  • Computer freezes before BIOS after arch linux install

This is my first time installing arch linux, I followed the beginners install guide word for word. However, after the install, my computer gets stuck before the BIOS. It identifies the RAM, GPU, and harddrive (all Diagnostic lights are ok on my MOBO). Before the install it booted fine, but now when I boot it up it wont go to the BIOS screen no matter how many times I press delete. However, when I remove the harddrive it boots to the arch linux install screen on my USB drive perfectly.
I know it is not my hardware because I did many different tests (mem-test, swapped out harddrives, tried 1 stick of RAM in different slots, etc). More importantly, my harddrive is brand new so I know it isn't dead because I could partition it when I was installing arch linux.
    Computer specs:
    AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3700+
    DFI LANPARTY nf4-d
    ATI Radeon x800
    2 GB DDR RAM
    160 GB SSD
I have no idea what the problem is, I must have screwed something up with the bootloader or something. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try clearing the CMOS settings either by removing the motherboard battery for some minutes or by using the relevant jumper on the motherboard. Check the manual of your motherboard for details.
